early 90 cars did not have the arm rest, mid year they brought it back. I have a 90GT bought in 92 did not have one. and got my arm rest from a local yard. 90 fenders are smaller than 91,92,93 wheels. this was done in part from 15 to 16" wheels as you mentioned. I think 91 went to the smaller 2 wire starter also.
Nice vid, I love my 88 gt, bought it brand new and still have it. Its was a really fun car to drive, looking forward to getting it back on the road! Keep up the good work man.
There are 3747 1988 mustangs with the ttop option. Ford discontinued the option in 1987 so all 1988 models are built in late 1987 and since they ran out of certain parts for these cars you'll notice the doors are from convertible cars (the mirrors are different) are used on the 1988's.

the oil pressure sensor changed between 89 and 90. And I think the dash gauge is different. 89's have a large diameter pressure sensor that will not work correctly in a 90. Also the 89 sensor, being as large as it is, was mounted out on an extension to move it further away from the oil filter. The 90's have a small diameter sensor and no extension.
Nice video. There is actually a black fuse cover on the 90-93 cars. It was not left without a cover from the factory. Many of them were lost or the tabs easily broke off so that could be why you don’t see them much. Also, not sure if it was mentioned, but the check engine and warning lights are in the instrument cluster on 90-93 vs 87-89 are on the right lower side which can be seen through the instrument cluster bezel. Another cool super rare option not seen much is the motorized seat adjuster on 90-93 driver seat only. 87-89 had a fuel door lock in the glove box and 90-93 didn’t have it.
I'm glad you touched on the map light. I have one in my '88 GT and had never seen another. I thought I had a freak option. One thing you might have mentioned - although it's not really a "feature" - are the GT fog lights. Ford wired these incorrectly or didn't consider the load on the electrical system when installing. After 45 minutes or so, when running the fogs with the headlights, the entire lighting system shuts down. It happened to me one night on a desolate country road and freaked me out. I saw a fix for it in a Mustang magazine years ago, but it involved a lot of IP surgery, so I passed on it. With the advent of LED bulbs, the fix is now just a matter of upgrading the bulb I guess.
I think you had a bad switch. My cousin had them on his, and never had any trouble. I had a bad switch in my old 86 grand marquis, that if you ran the high beams too long, the switch overheated and tripped the thermal reset in the switch itself. I had to replace the switch 3 times because the one from Advance Auto was garbage. The replacement from Autozone was in the car till the day I got rid of it.
Nice trim piece! I swapped in the 90-93 controls into my 87, and was thinking about figuring out a way to mount a newer radio one day. Mine also has a 90 black interior so I added the rear seat shoulder belts too. Lots of little differences over the years! Great info!
87-92 mustang gt and lx with or without mass air had the same 225 horsepower. The horsepower did not drop until 1993 fox body mustang gt or lx. Know the 93 cobra was rated at 245 with the gt40 heads and intake. Just had to make it clear on the HP ratings. Yes all 87-92 mustang gt or lx had forged Pistons where 93 was not forged.
Great video! You gained a new subscriber. My 89 LX was an anniversary edition made in August of 1989, and has a tiny dash emblem to prove it. 😆 I was told on a forum that mine is a "sport" edition. She has the big headrest seats with power lumbar on the driver's seat. Also came with 3.08 rear end gears, 140 mph speedo, and tilt steering. Also came with 10 hole wheels and a full size spare, which was stolen by a sleazy shop in Florida. Didn't realize it was gone until I had moved back to Texas. Enjoyed the video, will continue checking out the rest. God bless!
I have a 1988 Saleen Mustang with Mass air and I’m a bit of a geek in the engine bay changes that year. The 88 MAF cars intake tube and MAF Sensor and connector are unique to those cars as well as the emission decal on the coil cover. The wiring harness to the 02 sensors was unique as well. Mid year 1988 (April/May?), all 5.0 HO engines got a new camshaft to smooth the idle and also lost a few horsepower. They also got a new oil cap and lost the black intake plug that had been there since EFI got added in 1986. There were at least 3 different oil caps used during 1987-1993.
Very well done, as well as some of the follow up comments. FYI, the 5.0 valve covers on the 87-89 and some 90's are unfinished raw aluminum and the 90 - 93 are finished. Then there are the convertible tops, 87-89 no headliners until 90 then finished off with a headliner.
I have a 93 LX. Still currently has the 2.3l. Grey and black interior. Putting a 5.0 in it and going carbed. My fiance has an 83 GT T-Top. Love the Turbines and the Pony wheels. Hers has the Cobra wheels.
Great content and information sir! Not to me one of those guys but.... the comment about the 91 LX’s in Light Crystal Blue. It was actually 90. Trying it find out the break down with options as to the numbers produced in certain configurations. I had a 90 Light Crystal Blue, navy top, blue/black interior with white leather automatic. Trying to locate it now to try to buy I back. Sold it 18 years ago.
I read the title, I thought there were no changes to the engine / transmission. I used to go get the flier for the new mustang every year. Nearly bought one, but I bought a probe instead.
Another interesting running change: the '93 airbag is different than the '90-'92. The harness connectors are different. Assume this was an "across the board" change Ford made as that airbag was used across multiple vehicle lines (Panthers, F-150's)...
Lots of great info! How about the SSP cars of the same era? How about a review of the factory added items that were different from year to year- possibly another rabbit hole?
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see the placement of the 1979 interior door handles mentioned or in the comments. They were at the bottom of the door as opposed to the top. Very odd, never saw any other vehicle the door handles located so low on the door panel.
No Tilt wheel in 1990-93 was simply because ford did NOT have a column that tilted AT the steering wheel, like 1989 and earlier did. The airbag and forces deploying it would not allow a Tilt column, if you look at the trucks, they tilt WAY WAY back by the dash board. There was no room in a Mustang for that.
@@417fox Nope, wouldn't pass crash test. You should call me sometime, I can tell you differences that NOBODY knows, not even FORD any more. Great video. Wow, I can't believe how much your high school car looked like mine. In 1993 I had a 1988 GT in Scarlet Red, 5 speed with grey interior, power locks/windows and sunroof but no a/c and also had the smoked headlight and foglight covers. I wanted so bad to have pony's on mine but sadly had the turbines. Even with the 2.73 M code axle, it was the fastest car in high school :O) Irocs were really popular and I wanted something different so I bought my 5.0 and loved it. Smoked them F-bodies all the time. Drove that car through college too and it never left me stranded and the clutch was still strong when I sold it. I even drove it 2000 miles across Western Canada on a failing fuel pump.
One other thing. Shock tower clearance on 92 and 93 is greater than previous years. It was to clear the larger booster on the 93 cobra. I don’t know why 92s got it though.
93 Teal Green 5.0 5spd hatchback with Black Interior. (w all the options I believe. AC, Rear Win Defrost, Premium sound, Cruise, Power win/locks) Original Owner with 100K on it. :) Still running, looking great and everything working. ;) Oops, except the power driver seat. The raise/lower gear stripped. :(
Stuff you missed: Reduction in horsepower from ‘88 to ‘89 was due to a milder / smoother cam, not from MAF. 90-93 had smaller headrests, knee impact pads under the steering wheel, darker black pigmented dash plastics, low fuel light relocated from the dash bezel to the instrument panel, no tweed seat fabric option, and dark blue exterior Ford oval emblems vs light blue. Essentially all the interior changes in 90-93 were to offset the cost of the new airbag….including cheaper climate control dials and bezel. I’m surprised Ford didn’t go from 4 lug wheels to 3..
@@Fishnasty650 1987 - 1988 were identical motors and fueling, with 1987 offering T-tops. Speed density to mass air metering happened in 1989 along with a less aggressive cam profile which reduced power by 2hp. But 1987-1988 responded poorly to mods vs 1989-1992. In 1993 Ford went from forged to sintered / powdered metal pistons so those motors were garbage. All 1987-1993 cars produced 190hp to the rear wheels. 1989 was the best year as it had better seats with extendable leg rests and better heater controls than 1990-1993. 1990 had console delete to offset the additional mfg cost of the airbag. 1992-1993 deleted the seat leg rests.
When you showed a pic of your personal red Stang from back in the day it looks sweet but how did you see anything at night with them black headlight covers on there
Great stuff! I realize that stereo changes amongst the years were plentiful. Someone else mentioned the amp under the passenger's seat on the 1993, but a couple other options stand out to me. One was the CD Player which was introduced in 1993. Also, the factory equalizer is a pretty nice option to have. I know it was available on at least the 1991 and 1992 cars. I think it also was available on an earlier year. The convertible top headliner became standard on the 1993 cars but also was on the 1992 feature cars.
Very informative and enjoyable video 417 Fox. Thank you for taking the time to create and upload this great content ! Now for my 2 cents; the small headrests in the fox are basically non functional. I ended up putting (color matching) 95 Mustang articulating headrests in my Fox for long drives. Big improvement.
I had a '93 gt in performance red. Then in 2001 Ford picked the paint back up. So I bought the 01' gt in performance red. But for some reason they were calling it competition red.
I had a black on grey 89 LX Sport. With 5.0 5spd sport seats no 25th emblem and it had the 140mph speedo I bought it in 95 with 3100 miles for $6200.00 cash.
I'm glad you did this. I have a 90 lx 5.0 and the people that acquired it from the original owner took interior out of a 4 cylinder of a pre 90 car. So mine is all ass backwards on the interior stuff. I drive a truck so I'm not home right now but now I need to look see if the shoulder belts or the lap belt is in back. Ive never paid attention bc I never knew there was a change and with mine being all outa year wak with the interior im curious if they changed the belts also. I know the bezel is wrong year.
How are you, I will like to know if there's a different on the side group effects in Sizes i was trying to fit on a customer's car and it was about 1&½ inch to short , if I get it to fit on the top groove and against the doors it was to short to reach th wheel arch on the quarters
The 1988 LX 5.0 convertibles built before October 1987 had the side mirrors mounted on the window, the ones built in October 1987 and after had them mounted on the door. My 1988 LX 5.0 convertible built in September 1987 also has the factory low coolant sensor on the overflow tank that was only available on 1988 GTs andwasn't available on 1988 LXs. So I'm thinking that was also because it was built before October 1987.
@@nathanlopez5667 right! Plus it was just over $10k new. Most dealers around me loaded them up or only had GTs in stock. But when I found a very nice 90 black interior in 01 for $100, of course it was power, so I had to add those options. Still love my "stripper" hatch though!
Very nice attention to detail video. Most people overlook all these minor or major changes, what is wild to think is that 79-04 unibody and suspension are all similar and interchangeable! I have a question sir, where can i score one of those super cool "Fox It" hats?
I know i'm late to the party, however, i must make sure if i understand correctly: Performance Red and Vibrant Red are the same color scheme/mixture of red and, the only difference is 1. it's, name 2. single stage (EY ) 3. clear coat (ES). note* is there a difference in the appearance of both?
Also, its not necessarily 87-89 specific, but if you are wanting to do an aftermarket momo wheel with a nrg quick release setup like I did on my 89, its MUCH easier to do and make it work on a 87-89 than a 90-93. It doesn't look right on 90+ cars and iirc horn wiring is a bit confusing. Plus its technically illegal to remove the airbag. 89 is the best year imo! 87-92 had forged pistons, 93 had hyper pistons
So how do you find out or determine what right size splat you have if it's not on the car like I have a passenger side and I need a driver side I don't know what year it came off of I'm turning my 82 GT into an 87 to 93 GT with the ground effects

Oh sure they made a few 1989 T top Gt's, I owned one. The 140 MPH Speedometer, and dash emblem were half year intro BECAUSE the original 1965 Mustang was first sold in APRIL 1964, so the upgrades to the GT's were in rough accordance to the release of the original Mustang.

Fuel door and trunk open
I got a 91 5.0 the speedometer goes from 55 or 60 to past 140 in a heart beat. And goes back to o when you stop. Every time. How do I fix it. ?????
90-91 convertibles had rear power window switch in the speaker grill.
@14:05 The 93 pistons were actually hypereutectic, not cast.
Great info!
FORGIVE ME MAN MY MEMORY SUCKS IS YOUR CAR A REAL 93 COBRA.
MAN THAT'S SO SWEET THAT YOU OFFERED THE TRIM PIECES.
I have a 91 LX 5.0 convertible. cool to learn new things about foxbodies
I have a 93 LX. Still currently has the 2.3l. Grey and black interior. Putting a 5.0 in it and going carbed. My fiance has an 83 GT T-Top. Love the Turbines and the Pony wheels. Hers has the Cobra wheels.
Makes me appreciate my 1990 Dark Titanium LX 5.0 5-sp all the more. Mine's a hatch, though, not a notch. Lotta fun. Thanks for the vid.
Great list, I was glued to it, yes do some list.
Great video with lots of info. I currently have an 2001 svt cobra convertible but always loved the fox body cars.
Airbag might of come from Taurus parts bin with no tilt?
I read the title, I thought there were no changes to the engine / transmission. I used to go get the flier for the new mustang every year. Nearly bought one, but I bought a probe instead.
My 90 is a Medium Cabernet with an all black interior. Not sure how rare that is, but 32 years ago I saw it and said: "I want that one".
Part 2🤔👍🏻
My 90 SSP has a 160mph calibrated speedometer which is common amongst SSP cars but varies in some years from what I have read
I am fairly certain if ford wanted to they could have. But just my opinion
@@417fox Nope, wouldn't pass crash test. You should call me sometime, I can tell you differences that NOBODY knows, not even FORD any more. I was the founder of "THE 5.0 SHOP" in New york, started 1987. I had the very first 5.0 EFI engine running OUT of the Mustang and in a Hot rod, IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY!!!
@@nevetslegasi5686 shoot me an email with your number and let’s talk. I am putting together part 2 and it sounds like you are the man! 417fox@gmail.com
Great Content and would be amazing for one of those Ultra Blue 1992 coupes to turn up.
Man I know I have never seen one in person. True unicorn like your SSP
I have an 89 LX 5.0 vert black with beige interior tan top with sport seats, 25 years emblem on dash & 140 MPH speedo.
Very 👍🏻
One other thing. Shock tower clearance on 92 and 93 is greater than previous years. It was to clear the larger booster on the 93 cobra. I don’t know why 92s got it though.
Beautiful fox! I have a man. 93' Reef Blue notch. In resto mode now. Great vid here!
I read somewhere the 87s were the fastest.
88 coupes were the fastest besides 93 Cobra. I have one, check it out
@@Fishnasty650 1987 - 1988 were identical motors and fueling, with 1987 offering T-tops.
89 and 90 are the only ones to have the words 25 Anniversary written at the bottom of the running hourse dash emblem.
I have a '90 couoe. Was built in Detroit for Houston PD --- it has a factory 160 mph speedo
My 89 instrument cluster is half 89 and half 91 I spent so much time building it 90 is the first airbag year .
Mine is too. I got a 90-93 speedo for cheap so I adjusted it to fit my 87 cluster. It is a slightly different color, but it doesn't bother me!
Loving that intro music. Reminds me of Overkill. Beautiful stang!
When you showed a pic of your personal red Stang from back in the day it looks sweet but how did you see anything at night with them black headlight covers on there
We either pulled off the road and took them off or just hoped for the best.
Great content and info! Merry Christmas!!
Cool information always learning something about my car. I like the music that was played who was it?
I had a '93 gt in performance red. Then in 2001 Ford picked the paint back up. So I bought the 01' gt in performance red. But for some reason they were calling it competition red.
Great info, thanks for passing it along.
I had a black on grey 89 LX Sport. With 5.0 5spd sport seats no 25th emblem and it had the 140mph speedo I bought it in 95 with 3100 miles for $6200.00 cash.
Rocker panel/door still treatment is different on my ‘87 vs. my ‘91 (Ford logo badge vs hard plastic edge molding).
My 89 has the 140 speedo. But does not have the 25th dash emblem and ok with that. Looks better without the emblem
my 89 gt is the same
Merry Christmas to You and Your Family!!
I have a 93 lx in calypso with 46k miles you definitely know your stuff
How are you, I will like to know if there's a different on the side group effects in Sizes i was trying to fit on a customer's car and it was about 1&½ inch to short , if I get it to fit on the top groove and against the doors it was to short to reach th wheel arch on the quarters
The front spats between bumper and front wheel opening are different 87-89 vs 90-93
Awesome video. New subscriber here and looking forward to catching up on all your videos. Im in the rare foxbody club with my 89 saleen red with gold.
I got a Oxford White with black LX vert
My 1988 LX hatch has roll-up windows and no tilt steering wheel also no AC
That’s a rare one!
@@417fox sure is and it's only got 73000 miles
Sounds like mine, a "no" option LX, but it does have AC as that's not an option in Texas!
@@trbstang yeah I actually like the fact that I have no options you don't have to worry about things breaking are going out
@@nathanlopez5667 right!
I know i'm late to the party, however, i must make sure if i understand correctly: Performance Red and Vibrant Red are the same color scheme/mixture of red and, the only difference is
1. it's, name
2. single stage (EY )
3. clear coat (ES).
note* is there a difference in the appearance of both?
The 25 Year Annv Mustangs were built from April 1989 thru April 1990....which somewhat replicates the original run of the first Mustang, the 1964 1/2.
MY '87 5.0 LX HAD NO PONY, 85 MPH BUT NOT NOW. VERY INTERESTING VIDEO
The hatch had rubber inserts fitted in 90 i believe so the hatch doesn't hit the quarter panel
Hey Fox, don`t forget to give a nod to us 7up owners

My fox is an 87, LX 5.0. vert, 5 speed with grey leather. Fairly rare combo.
So how do you find out or determine what right size splat you have if it's not on the car like I have a passenger side and I need a driver side I don't know what year it came off of I'm turning my 82 GT into an 87 to 93 GT with the ground effects
I have a 91 LX 5.0 convertible in medium red.
Subbed/liked for recognising our Lord and saviour first. My car was originally medium scarlet inside and out, then resprayed a couple times to now a combo of black/bright red. Getting it ready for paint real soon, and I'm going gloss white.
I own an 89 GT in deep shadow blue and titanium grey . I've owned the car since new in 89, I've always wondered how many came with the light blue stripe on the moldings . Mine doesn't have it , never did . I've seen most with it very few without . Anyone know ?
88 mass air plug was square on the sensor for California, 89 mass air cars had oval plugs.
Ford has always done the least possible for mustang's unless u get a sport edition for 3x what it's worth, they wont even put a moonroof like Camaro & dodge
The change of interior rear quarter panels on the convertible
My Brothers buddy has had 1993 I believe it’s the 1 of 9

Oh sure they made a few 1989 T top Gt's, I owned one. The 140 MPH Speedometer, and dash emblem were half year intro BECAUSE the original 1965 Mustang was first sold in APRIL 1964, so the upgrades to the GT's were in rough accordance to the release of the original Mustang.
I had the 7up color drop top Of 5.0
