Nice demo of 65 mm vs. 80 mm spindles on the Onefinity. The installation is also a big plus for folks considering this. Thanks JR - well done.
Some good install walk through were already available but no other discussion about this interference on the 65mm. I felt like it would be good to know. I ran into a z limit issue in some thicker stock with the 65mm and it wasn’t something I anticipated. Hope you’re well alan!

I've only had my Journeyman X-50 for a couple weeks, but am already considering an upgrade from router to spindle. What I came here to learn you finally presented at 11:10. The bulk of the preceeding content belongs in a follow-up video titled "You Won't BELIEVE What It Takes To Swap Spindle Mounts On Your Onefinity CNC!" (ideally with a pic of you, mouth open in shock and your hands slapped to the sides of your face, superimposed over a photo of the two spindles).

Thanks, J.R. I've had my Onefinity Journeyman for just under a month and will be sticking with the Makita router until I get much more comfortable with the Journeyman. I do mostly small items such as signs and boxes, but I'm also doing a lot of flattening for the rough sawn boards I prefer to work with. I'm using a 1.5" flattening bit with carbide inserts on a 0.25" shaft, which is working fine, but I know that shaft is a serious weak point. I'd like to move up to a 0.5" collet, so that will likely be my excuse to get to the 80mm spindle. Anyway, all that to say thanks for showing how it's done.
I started with the makita like most people, and honestly it worked really well. This would be that next 10-20% capability. Definitely not required but I thought it might help to illustrate an important difference between 65 and 80mm. Appreciate you, hope you’re well!

Hey Keith! I’ve found that being in front of a camera makes me tighten up some, time to let it flow a little…. = ). The makita is where I started, and is a great starting point to walk through your progression in CNC, or at least it was for me. I’ve definitely concluded though that the machines structure is much more capable than the trim router.

Yeah I had to lightly tap that bottom piece off also when I swapped to the 80mm.

Great video. One observation, your Z travel is ultimately limited by the lower ball screw bracket height. What I did is set my spindle nose at 1/16 lower than the bracket. This way I avoid interference between the bracket and workpiece.

J.R. - Great Job, and timely, as I am about to order a spindle / vfd. I have an 80mm water cooled spindle on another cnc, but would be very interested in how your air cooled is performing. Also wondering if your unit is louder (spinning but not cutting) that the water cooled version. I'm impressed (and subscribed).
Hi Frank, thanks very much! From my research and what lead me to go air cooled, is firstly that I don't intend on machining metal, and wont need slow RPM operations which is where water cooled really has an advantage. Below something like 7200 RPM, an air cooled spindle cant cool itself properly. I've never had a water cooled to compare the noise levels to, but I guess water cooled would be quieter. That said, when my machine is running, the cutting tool is always louder than the motor, and I really don't run the spindle much in a non cutting situation. Really just start a job, and might wait a minute to warm it up before starting, and when it's done I shut it right off, so non cutting sounds arent really a concern in my case.
I think water cooled spindles are great, but my personal choice was to not involve coolant in my CNC. Really just didnt want to deal with more components etc.

Great video thanks. Quick question, how much does the 80mm change the cutting area of the Onefinity?
Total area available to cut is the same, it does push the y axis forward by the difference between the 65 and 80mm center point, but you just adjust your spool board if you need to by that same amount. Good explanation. Any thoughts on how the additional weight will impact the stepper motors. Like all good things, mods beget more mods in my experience. After you've run it for a while, I'd be interested in some insight into performance gains and or differences. Its obviously more robust but unsure of the use case to value. I'd imagine it differs for everyone.
I’m not anticipating any immediate issues, but can dial up the power if needed. It is a good bit heavier than the makita, and somewhat heavier than the 65mm. Time will tell. Thanks for checking it out!
I have a 80 mm spindle on a Onefinity and the weight has not been a problem. As I remember, your question has been discussed at length on Onefinity's forum. The ball screw Z drive and stepper seems to be up to the task with no issues.
I saw someone makes adapter so that you can mount 65mm spindle or router onto 80mm mount bracket. Will that solve the 65mm spindle hitting the z axis top? I am thinking of buying a 65mm 1.5 air cooled 110v spindle for an Elite Journeyman. I would love to hear your thoughts. I have only 110v in my garage.
Yeah, that’s probably a solution, I wonder though if it hangs off the gantry too far would it create issues with flew or something?
Why not put a spacer plate behind the current spindle holder to move it away from the stepper housing?
I guess I'd be afraid of introducing flex. I've since upgraded to an 85 mm spindle and carrier. Works great! Thanks for checking it out and taking the time to comment!

I just received my Onefinity and 80mm spindle. How do you determine how high to mount the Z slider, how high to mount the spindle in it?
Hi John, I used the middle holes on the slider and placed the spindle in the slider at a height that would adequately reach the work. That’s a beefy spindle clamp, you’ll be fine moving the spindle up or down in the coupler to fit your need.
Couple things - you didn't mention where you have your z-gantry mounted on the z-axis (there are 3 different set of positioning holes). Did you change the vertical position when you switched spindles? And I didn't hear any mention of re-tramming - I'm assuming that's something you did later, correct?
Hi Peter, I did move the Z up (so lowest of the three screw holes) and I got surprisingly lucky and just needed a slight tram adjustment which was quick. I left that out because there are already a bunch of videos about tramming and thought it'd make this too long.
@@TradeSkillersAnonymous Thanks - I just mounted my PC 890 on the 1F and had to move it up as well (along w/ensuring the proper z step-motor clearance. The nod tram was quite a bit a different than the small Makita but the weight contributed to that.

I have the 80mm and am going to get an extra mount and stack them, the spindle needs the rigidity.

these kind of spindles have considerable weight. what would you say about the spindle weight and machine ?
The spindle weight vs the onefinity is no issue at all. No changes were needed in mine to compensate. Has been flawless.
Do you have a link I could purchase the 80mm water cooled spindle?
Hi there, I don’t, but I’d recommend the Hyuang maker, they seem the most consistent. Available on Amazon. Or if you want a turn key solution, meaning all set and wired, look up pwncnc.com , Daniel, the owner is a great guy

How much is the Z travel limited with the smaller spindle?
I don’t have the specifics in front of me, but you can compensate somewhat by adjusting the z slider mounting.
aside from the more powerful spindle, couldnt you have added riser blocks on the 4 corners of the machine to get more height?

Seems like a design flaw in the 65mm mount, which should really be resolved.
