  • In my previous videos, I received lots of questions and comments about the tool setter and how it differs from the touch probe. I made this video in an effort to explain and demonstrate the differences. Hopefully you will gain a better understanding and be able to make better decisions about your needs for your CNC.
    The DashMade Woodworking tool setter is my favorite CNC accessory and I'll never own one without it. If you're interested in buying a tool setter I highly recommend the one featured in this video. You can buy the "Z Zer.o" tool setter from Dash Made Woodworking on Etsy at:

    Great Video, but I am still just a bit confused. Here is what I've done:
    Situation #1 - Surfaced back side of project
    1) New Job - loaded a file.
    2) Inserted a 1/4" EM and did the X-Y-Z probe.
    3) Pressed rewind and Cycle Start.
    4) Masso asks me to change the tool
    5) I changed tool to a surfacing bit, pressed Cycle Start again and the machine moved to Zero the bit on the Tool Setter, then proceeded to begin to carve. HOWEVER, the Z was now too high and it air carved.
    6) I stopped the carve, then I used the X-Y-Z Touch Probe and did a probe for Z only. Hit rewind then Cycle Start and it worked fine. After running the surfacing file, I was done with this side of the project.
    Situation #2 - remounted project on opposite side to begin carving using multiple individually saved files.
    1) Loaded the first file.
    2) Inserted a 1/4" EM and did the X-Y-Z probe - this is the bit I am using for the 1st file as well.
    3) Pressed rewind and Cycle Start.
    4) Masso asks me to change the tool
    5)Since I already had the tool installed, I just pressed Cycle Start again and the machine moved to Zero the bit on the Tool Setter, then proceeded to begin to carve. HOWEVER, again the Z was again too high and it air carved.
    6) I stopped the carve, then, like before, I used the X-Y-Z Touch Probe and did a probe for Z. Hit Rewind the Cycle Start it worked fine.
    7) Upon finish of this file, I loaded the next file, changed the bit, then hit Cycle Start. Masso asked me to change the Tool. Since I had already changed the tool, I pressed Cycle Start again, and the machine went to the Tool Setter, then proceeded to carve correctly.
    Obviously, I am missing something on the initial file for the first bit.

      If I’m understanding correctly, you saved the tool paths for side 1, separately. Then did the same thing for side 2.
      If that’s the case, try saving the multiple tool paths for side 1 into ONE FILE. Then do the same for side 2.
      By saving your tool paths separately you’re missing out on one of the best benefits of having a tool setter, which is the ability to save all of your tool paths into one file. Try this and I think you’ll find that your problem is solved.
      By saving the tool paths into one file, you only have to probe your Z with the probe block one time. The tool setter takes over from there. Let me know if this helps you.

    Good explanation on the deference. Before I had a tool setter I forgot to probe Z once or twice after a bit change and the bit did not survive the mistake.

    What are your thoughts on sticking with the paper method to set your Z alongside having the tool setter??

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! And thanks for watching!
      The paper method works fine, I sometimes even use it when I feel the need to double check the touch probe results. Basically, I think I trust the paper more than the probe in some situations, but that’s likely because I started out using paper with my first CNC several years ago.

    I can see where a tool setter is convenient. Do I need a tool setter, or can I just enter the tool length offset by hand?

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  6 місяців тому

      You can operate without a tool setter and manually reset your Z after each tool change. You can also live without a smart phone, or internet. But why would you??

  • @bgood188
    @bgood188 10 місяців тому +1

    As always great video. One thing can you clarify on is tool numbering. To use the tool setter all your bits need to be in the masso correct? And then in vcarve you need to match the numbers. Example. 1/4 EM is tool number 4 in vcarve tool database and tool number 4 in the masso.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  10 місяців тому

      Thanks! Actually, I covered tool numbering recently in the “tool error” video linked below. But yes, the tool numbers in VCarve Pro and Masso must match exactly.

    Can you make a video on batching out items using Masso / Tool Setter / Touch probe? I layout the pieces but wanting to avoid homing after every item is machined.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  5 місяців тому

      If you have watched all of my videos and have your machine set up like mine, after securing your new workpiece just tap “go to work origin” > rewind > cycle start. No need to rehome or reset the Z (as long as your workpieces are exactly the same thickness). But if yours is not set up like mine (edited post processor) it would be impossible for me to explain how you could do it with your particular setup.
      However, I am currently making a video that has a small about of repeatable cuts, but it’s basically just as I described above.

  • @robstewart3627

    If you don't have a z setter, when prompted to change out the tool to continue the program, can you do that with the regular tool probe in z? will it know it has to set z or is that all manual...I tried it a few times and it just goes haywire into the wood. I just ended up using height collars and setting them to the same height. it sucks.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  2 місяці тому

      @@robstewart3627 if you’re NOT using a tool setter you can only save, load and run one tool path at a time. You will have to use your touch probe to set the tool Z height each time you change tools.
      The #1 advantage of using a tool setter is that you save ALL your tool paths to one file and run them together. The tool setter automatically measures the offset of each tool used in the project. All you have to do is change the tool when prompted, then hit “cycle start”.

  • @NeilBlanchard

    Question about how the spindle moves over to above the tool setter to change the bit? When I run the G-code I made in VCarve Pro, when it comes to changing the bit, it just stops above the end of the tool path it just finished.

    • @MitchellsWoodwork
      @MitchellsWoodwork  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi Neil, great question. Here's the answer:
      In Masso > F1 > Auto Tool Zero > checkmark "auto tool zero" > enter the X & Y position of your toolsetter > checkmark "enable" on both X & Y positions.
      I have my Z safe distance to tool setter set at -0.50"
      My Tool zero feedrate is: 31.77165 ipm. I can't remember where that particular number came from, seems to me that just an even 31" or 32" would've been a lot easier. If you need any additional help just contact me through my contact info in my bio here on UA-cam. Hope this helps!

      @@therealrez nope. You can even set it below the surface of the spoilboard like I did in this video so it won’t be in the way during resurfacing.
