Group History (From Wikipedia)
The Poppy Family was a late 1960s and early 1970s Canadian pop music group, based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Seventeen year old Susan Pesklevits (b. 19 August 1948, d. 25 April 2022) met Terry Jacks (b. 29 March 1944) in the middle 1960s while she was a regular performer on a national teen TV show called Music Hop as well as many other national TV shows. She later called Jacks to accompany her on rhythm guitar for one of her live performances and eventually, with the addition of Craig McCaw on lead guitar, Susan decided to dedicate all her time to the trio. Craig McCaw introduced Satwant Singh on tablas and they became the Poppy Family. The name was chosen when Susan, Terry and Craig were searching for a new name and came across it in the dictionary. Susan and Terry were married in 1967 and Susan Pesklevits became Susan Jacks.
With Susan Jacks on vocals and Terry Jacks on rhythm guitar, along with musicians Craig McCaw (guitar/sitar) and Satwant Singh (tablas/drums), the group recorded their first album, from which came their best known song "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" (No. 1 in Canada and No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts) which was a worldwide hit. Their second and last album Poppy Seeds was recorded with studio musicians after Terry Jacks released Craig and Satwant from the group. Later hits included "That's Where I Went Wrong" (#9, also #27 US), 'Where Evil Grows' (#6, also #45 US), and `Good Friends?'(#10, also "Bubbling Under" the US chart). In the United States "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" and "That's Where I Went Wrong" were both Top 10 Adult Contemporary chart hits as well; "Where Evil Grows" and "Good Friends?" both also hit the US AC chart. The Poppy Family's first two Canadian releases were "Beyond the Clouds" (#75 in 1968), "What Can The Matter Be?" (#53 in 1969). Other releases included "I Was Wondering" (#10 in 1971, also US #100) and "No Good To Cry" (#8 in 1972), "I'll See You There" and "Tryin'".
At their career peak, Susan performed "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" on Bobby Darin's 1970 television variety special, The Darin Invasion. They also appeared on other variety shows including Rollin' On The River with Kenny Rogers and The George Kirby Special. Although Susan enjoyed performing live, Terry was not interested and their career ultimately suffered.
The "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" single earned the group two 1970 Gold Leaf (Juno) Awards as well as two Moffatt Awards in 1970. The Juno Award is Canada's equivalent of the Grammy Award. The single version of "Which Way You Goin' Billy" went on to sell a total of more than 3½ million worldwide, and was awarded a gold disc.[1]
Terry Jacks decided to drop the Poppy Family name in early 1973 and Susan and Terry recorded two solo albums, Terry Jacks' Seasons in the Sun and Susan Jacks' I Thought of You Again. Susan left the marriage later that same year.
Lyrics:
Which Way You Goin', Billy (T. Jacks / London Records, Inc)
Which way you goin', Billy?
Can I go too?
Which way you goin', Billy?
Can I go with you?
I really love you, Billy,
And all this time,
I thought you loved me, Billy,
And you were mine.
I'm gonna miss you, Billy,
And though I'm trying,
I'm hurtin' so bad, Billy,
I can't help crying.
You are my whole, babe,
My heart and my soul, babe.
I'd have nothing to show, babe,
If you should go away.
You are my whole, babe,
My heart and my soul, babe.
I'd have nothing to show, babe,
If you should go.
Which way you goin', Billy?
Or need I ask?
'Cause you don't want me, Billy.
You're free at last.
I won't forget you, Billy,
For all my life.
I'll always love you, Billy.
I'll stay your wife.
You are my whole, babe,
My heart and my soul, babe.
I'd have nothing to show, babe,
If you should go away.
You are my whole, babe,
My heart and my soul, babe.
I'd have nothing to show, babe,
If you should go.
You are my whole, babe,
My heart and my soul, babe.
I'd have nothing to show, babe,
If you should go.
This has blown me away. So today is the 16th anniversary of losing my darling son Billy James Blevins. He was only 2 but had a heart problem. As I’m getting ready to go to the cemetery, this comes on the radio. Never in my life have I heard this song, but will for we hold it dear. If ever there was such a significant sign that he’s with me than this is it x
Bless you sweetheart...I will be thinking about you
wonderful analogy
May God bless you for what was the dearest to you
Stacey, he was only 2 but he was your whole. I will pray for you and your Billy.
So very sorry for your loss 💕
Sad to hear of Susan's passing. I fell in love with her the moment I heard her voice ring out across the universe through the airwaves. I never tire of listening to this hauntingly beautiful song. Once heard, it never leaves you.
I was lucky enough to listen to Susan and Terry Jacks sing by a campfire with nothing more than a guitar…That day was unforgettable! Ah the old days life was much simpler
And much better without Iphones and the Internet.
I was reminded about this song after I'd heard of Susan's passing. It's the most beautiful song and she had such a beautiful voice. To anyone who didn't know, "Billy" is her brother who is referenced in this song. RIP Susan Jacks.🌹❤🍁🌺🎵
@@isabellind1292 So why does she say, " I'll stay your wife" in the final verse?
@@peejm1424 I stand corrected when I say it was in "reference" to Susan's brother as he didn't have anything to do w/the meaning of the song. Only that his name was chosen.
According the Wikipedia, the song (written by her husband Terry Jacks) used the name "Buddy" in the title (and from a male's perspective) but was re-written at Susan's suggestion that it be sung by a female. Susan claimed she chose her brother Billy's name to replace "Buddy".
However Terry Jacks said she was incorrect, that he'd already chosen the name "Billy" but whatever the case, the name was used only because it was similar to "Buddy" and for no other personal reasons.

Watching this today made my eyes leak. RIP Susan Jacks.

JUST FOUND OUT SHE PASSED AWAY. MY SHE REST IN PEACE. THANK YOU FOR GREAT MEMORIES AND BEAUTIFUL MUSIC.
Sad to hear today that on April 28 2022 that Susan Jacks (Born Susan Pesklvits) has passed away Surrey, British Columbia, Canada in a hospital there. She was awaiting at a second kidney transplant at the time. 19 August - 25 April 2022. Born in Saskatoon, Canada. Rest in Peace and sing your heart out for the angels. : ~ )

Wow did not know that she is a Vancouver girl. Sad loss of a beautiful voice
She IS an angel!
this song is the reason i feel sad for all the kids growing up now days. they have no idea what those days were like. what a song. they do not make them like that anymore. if they did this world would be a better place to live in
Well said 👍 I tell my teenage grandkids that I'd love to take them back in time for a week, back to the 60s. Omg, "there was no internet or cell phones!". Geesh
@@pam1574 Absolutely right.
If the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s was another country, I would apply for residency.
This is my favorite Poppy Family song. Susan Jacks had a beautiful voice.
Rest In Peace Susan. You have the voice of an Angel and now you’re singing with the Angels in Heaven. You will be missed. ❤️🙏🙏🙏❤️
Why do you think she's singing with the angels in Heaven? According to the Bible she very likely will not be in Heaven. Jesus said in John 3:3, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” John 14:6 and several other passages are important to consider as well.
@@Kojow7 Ya this crap is why people don wanna hang with you mate. Piss off.
@@Kojow7 first of all, it’s a saying or an expression, second how do you know she’s not born again? I wouldn’t presume to know her personal beliefs or what her journey concerning faith might be. You shouldn’t judge.
Kojow7....you have as much class as a Klik sandwich. Unbelievable.
@@Kojow7 the bible also says; Judge not, lest ye be judged.
Why didn't Susan get more recognition over the years? One of the greatest female voices of all time.
Always had my recognition. Gorgeous with an amazing voice.
Guess you just had to be in the era. Whomever told you to put down the bong...delete them.
Let's recognize her now and enjoy her pat
Reminds of the sound the ABBA women perfected later mid 70s
More recognition? Maybe because she's Canadian and not American, but then only guessing.
Agreed. Terry screwed her royally. And royalty!

As an old Baby Boomer, I remember this beautiful song, 'Wich Way You Goin' Billy' quite well. But for many of us who were sent to Vietnam, this song had quite a different meaning than was originally intended. RIP my Vietnam War Brothers and Sisters.
I broke up with my sweetheart to do a 2nd tour in Vietnam. Later, before I left, I got injured (twice) and ended up not able to go. We never saw each other again.

@@gerry6737 Ahhh, those first loves kinda do stick with a person!
Yes they do. There was a lot more to it. She got married 15 months later; I almost reached out to her 3x later in life, and learned in 2018 that she'd passed away four years earlier. 😢 Did some research and am now a close friend with her daughter (separated by 4,000 miles). Fate takes some funny twists, but life is good

Her voice is absolutely Angelic and what a beauty.
Good strong newcastle voice👍
I would give anything to go back to the 60 and 70s every day I wish that I miss my days and friends I would still have my mom dad sister brother here yet
Those were probably Divine times. 😢 I am very young and I'm grateful to still have all my grandparents, my great grandpa and met my great great grandpa in 2016. All thanks to the Lord. 💙🤗
I'm with you too. Live to go back to those days ☺
Me too, I feel for you! Simple times family love ❤️
Can i come too
I’ll go too!!!
There's something about the sound of this, especially the chorus that so relaxing! The sound of AM radio in 1970.
Back in time when the world was a better place to live.Where hearts were still pure of love.
Captures perfectly the female persona of heartfelt and unfading love.
Agree
And new music that came out was actually worth listening to, this one for sure.
Not sure the world was a better place. Remember Vietnam?

Which way you going Susan? Can I go too? I'm gonna miss you Susan. . .
Had the 45 back in 1970, Wheaton, Illinois. Great memories 🕊️
You all are not alone because if I experienced this song back in 1972 at 4 years old and was abused I think that there is some kind of spiritual connection? I hear the birds singing to me, it is beautiful.
My best friend in school was ‘Billy’. When this song came out the girls in class would gather around his desk and sing this to him. All in a nice fun way. Simpler times when simple things meant so much.
In1978 i was only 16 when I ran away with someone and got married. A month later his father came to my house and took him away. I really loved him and still do after 42 years. This song always reminds me of him.I love you always.

My husband was Billy. I heard this song two weeks before he ended our marriage. I grieved actually the rest of my life. He was THE ONE. Now, I look forward to meeting him in Heaven where there will be no tears. Yes, Billy, I still miss you.
Why do you still love a man who left you?
@@bornsand8366 I just never got over being LEFT. Marriage just wasnt something that seemed for me - I think I just convinced myself of that.
Such a beautiful song, and Susan was such a phenomenal vocalist. Yes, as other posters have commented, she had such an angelic voice.
Go sweetly in peace, Susan.
Her vocal harmony is amazing. It's seems like ABBA copied her style.
Someone is complaining they haven`t done a remake of this song in almost 50 years now, well the point is that this version is so complete and beautifull that nobody with a hint of sensibility will attempt to ruin it. This is the first and definitive version.
Nailed it! Covering this song would be like covering "Gloria."
Agree
Totally agree. The sound of this song is classic of it's era. Would not sound right with modern techniques, instruments, production etc.
Susan and Karen Carpenter. Two sweetest voices in american music
@@timcolder2789 or any other female Voice!!!
The greatest voice in Canadian music history. I had the pleasure of meeting her at an autographic signing back in '75. She was wearing a lavish fur coat (when fur was still in style) and dripping in diamonds. Along with that beautiful blonde hair she looked absolutely gorgeous! Along with Terry she was a talented class act.
God this is so beautiful…….and look at {music} now.
Sad to hear she passed today. Prayers for comfort for her family.
Only just found out that this beautiful lady has passed away. This song is just so incredible and tender.

Always loved this song. I can still remember going with my big sister to the neighborhood record store to buy this record on 45. It was 1969, I was 6 years old and she was 10. The store used to stack 45's of the current popular songs heard on the radio in little slots on the wall. You would ask for one and then take it to the counter to pay. Fond memories of growing up in Brooklyn in the 1960's.
Many stores sold records back then not just record stores. I got Susan Jacks autograph when she was doing a promotion at the local Woolco department store.
1 for the mercury station wagon👍😄

It was a great time to be young, and the music was so much better quality. I was born in 1969 and recall many of these tunes through the school mornings with the radio on. I also had uncles that played music all the time. I grew up with parents who loved old country music, and my Dad played guitar like my brother and I do now. Dad passed at 49 to Multiple Sclerosis and I would give anything to sit and listen to him play guitar and sing again. So I grew up with radio and old country music, so in turn love pretty much any type of music.:) Great memories.
