Happy Together by The Turtles is one of the most covered songs in all of r&r history. And it started out as a a song nobody wanted to record until the turtles did, and I think it was done in one take because they knew exactly how they wanted it to sound.

Agree: the Beatles and Stones achieved a level few bands before or since have ever quite matched. But to write off The Hollies and The Zombies, let alone most of the other bands mentioned here, is ridiculous. I have a lot of the Greatest Hots albums of the 60s, and The Zombies is among them.

Having been born in the early 1950's, the 1960's was a prelude to the 1970' s when music really became of age and grew into adulthood. It was the age of true rock when bands played and wrote their own music and had genuine talent not just because of the desire for money or fame, but because they wanted to play. I believe music had its heyday in the late 1960's, 1970's and 1980's and everything else has followed on from that. The majority of bands today (but not all) seem to appear ( many of whom don't write their own music, can't really play an instrument and have little if any musical talent) and disappear very quickly and are carried forward by technology and studio processing. Take away the sound and rhythm processed by the studio team and what else is there?
I consider myself so lucky to have lived through the greatest music era form the 1960's up to today..

Wasn't until I started buying albums in the 70's that I became more familiar with the actual bands. Album covers told us much, their names, how they looked. Who played which instrument or wrote lyrics. The 1960's bands didn't vanish per se, but unless they did a tv spot, I only heard their music from a radio. Either way, the music has never gone away. Not sure about the mindset of the 2.5 positive reviews but NONE of these bands vanished without a trace (which cannot be said for the 'pop' hitmakers of today) - the songs that these bands wrote/performed CONTINUE to not only being PLAYED but also COVERED by a lot of today's musicians (who really don't know how to write a memorable song/melody). not wanting to sound like some 'old dude' (that the parade has passed by) but i'm 38 and these guys were actually my GRANDPARENTS music and it's way better than the crap on the radio now......

      Ah, the Small Faces.
Steve Marriot quit to form the heavier sounding Humble Pie, who also included Peter Frampton. Died in 1991 in a house fire.
The remaining three recruited Wood and Stewart and became just the Faces.
Ronnie Lane quit the Faces in 1973 because "he didn't want to be in Rod Stewart's backing group". Formed folk group Slim Chance, toured and lost everything. Died in 1997 from MS.
Ian McLagan toured with the Rolling Stones after the Faces split up (plays keyboards on _Miss You),_ did a lot of session work, moved to Austin TX, married Keith Moon's ex-wife Kim Kerrigan (who died in a car crash in 2006) died in Dec 2014 from a stroke.
Kenney Jones is the only surviving member of the Small Faces. He later joined The Who (I went and saw them on his debut gig in London in 1979), appeared on TOTP for Status Quo once filling in for Jeff Rich. Runs his own polo club and founded The Small Faces charitable trust.
