- Click "Show More" for lyrics. This video is from the Kenny Rogers show " Rollin' ", (originally titled "Rollin' on the River") which was aired on Saturday 16 October 1971 (Yes, that's Kenny introducing the Poppy Family). From the largely ignored "Poppy Seeds" album, this song was the follow up to the smash hit "Which Way You Goin', Billy". In the USA this song only charted at #45, in Canada, the group's home territory, it made it all the way up to #6.
Lyrics:
Where Evil Grows (T. Jacks / London Records / Carlin America, Inc)
I like the way you smile at me.
I felt the heat that enveloped me.
And what saw I liked to see.
I never knew...where evil grew.
I should have steered away from you.
My friend told me to keep clear of you.
But something drew me near to you.
I never knew...where evil grew.
Evil grows in the dark
Where the sun, it never shines.
Evil grows in cracks and holes
And lives in people's minds.
Evil grew, it's part of you.
And now it seems to be,
That everytime I look at you
Evil grows...in me.
If I could build a wall around you
I could control the things that you do.
But I couldn't kill the will within you
And it never shows
The place where evil grows.
Evil grows in the dark
Where the sun, it never shines.
Evil grows in cracks and holes
And lives in people's minds.
Evil grew, it's part of you.
And now it seems to be,
That everytime I look at you
Evil grows... in me.
Don't you just love it when Hollywood throws out a song that most people have never heard of into their movies instead of selecting some cliché modern song that everyone's tired of already?
Yes, I'm here because of the Sonic movie and I really like this song. Never would have known it existed if it wasn't for the good doctor.

Vale si vi esta cancion antes en un video 2 semanas antes de ver la peli de Sonic? Xd
I personally thought the song was accurate because Eggman was evil and this song is about evil
I heard it was Jim Carey who suggested the song.
Im here a couple of weeks before a lot of people come here after watching the Sonic Movie. Jim Carrey performed it awesome
Duh, I wanted to do the same :')
Is it a good movie?
Marco Fernandoy people that watched the movie in early screenings commented on Twitter that it was an amazing movie, really funny, full of action, wholesome scenes and references to the games, so yeah, it seems the movie is great
@@marcofernandoy9148 Definitely. I watch it on February 13 and it was awesome
@@marcofernandoy9148 I saw it tonight, absolutely, utterly and totally fantastic! Funny, Sonic WAS Sonic, and Jim as Robotnik was fricking fantastic! The scene this song is in is hilarious!
This song is gonna blow up because of the Sonic movie.

It’s ICONIC

Sadly Susan Jacks passed away from kidney failure today at the age of 73 she was one beautiful woman inside and out. RIP!
Yes she was - so sad RIP Susan
RIP Susan Jacks. She passed from kidney failure today (26/04/22), at age 73.
Be prepared, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" fandom will be flooding here soon after the film's release!!
We did it lads.
you already have dickhead
Here were are lmao
@Robert Kidd why wouldn't I be spamming this into every recording of the song?
I'm not sure if there's an *inherent flaw in being a Sonic fan. Yeah a ton of em suck but I'm ashamed of them and a lot are kids. I'm 16 and I know where the series fucked up and I'm just looking twords the future with an open mind. Sonic is taking the world by storm again. He's a superstar again. #1 selling vidoegame movie with Jim Carrey as Robotnik ( I was kinda unsure about Ben Schwartz but he's awesome) it was perfect.
I'm not here to comment because of the Sonic Movie
I just thought you might like a latte with steamed Austrian goat milk.
Who do i look like, an imbecile? Of course i want a latte. I LOVE THE WAY YOU MAKE 'EM

70s Canadian Rock Bands couldn't break into the American Markets. So for us Canadians we were so double blessed to have been enjoying the BEST of both R0CK WORLDS.
The greatest voice in Canadian music history. I had the pleasure of meeting her at an autographic signing back in '75. She was wearing a lavish fur coat (when fur was still in style) and dripping in diamonds. Along with that beautiful blonde hair she looked absolutely gorgeous! Along with Terry she was a talented class act.
R.I.P.
Canada's Dolly Parton. RIP.
one of those older women I never met yet had a crush on beautiful and she could sing
RIP Susan 💔 You had one of the most beautiful voices in pop music.
I've surmised why the producers made her sit down when they performed Which Way You Goin' Billy? on television: Susan's also stunningly beautiful, and staying seated kept the focus on her singing.
Awww nooo. I didn't even know she died until I seen your post. Yes. RIP Susan.
What is her last name? Beautiful indeed ❤️
Born 1948 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as Susan Pesklevits. Moved to Vancouver with her family as a child . Performed on TV at age 15. Married Terry Jacks in 1967 . They separated in 1973 and both performed solo .
I have to say: Robotnik has fine taste in music.
Miss you, Susan (RIP August 19, 1948 - April 25, 2022). Sorry to learn of your passing to kidney disease.
Never did this type of comment but... Jim Carrey brought me here
always loved Terry Jacks and Susan.... loved the harmony. Brings back awesome memories
Hello Sherry, How are you doing?
Their voices go together so well
Jesus, this is both a pop song and legit poetry. I didn't think that was possible. I have many joys to thank Jim Carrey for, most are performances, but him asking to put this song in is a true gem. So thank you Jim.
So, Jim Carry dancing while analyzing a Blue Hedgehogs quill brought me here.
Damn I wish it were the 70’s again…
Always loved this song
Back in the late 70s-early 80s we used to go see this Western NY bar band called The Beez who did a hard rock version of this song.
I lived across the border in Detroit Michigan, we got the Canadian radio station CKLW, and of course we had our Motown, so the 45 rating on Billboard must have all been from us border towns because this song was HUGE in Detroit. A very cool hippy song! Love the Poppy's!
Likewise here, Dyan. I was 4 Y.O. when this song hit the airwaves (especially on "The Big 8"; a.k.a.: CKLW which, in 2000, converted 2 a News/Talk 4mat). Nowadays, CKWW (AM 580) replic8s the ol' CKLW as they play The Poppy Family quite often.
Same here
@@Sargeslide Cool!
I grew up on the north shore of Lake Huron and I would tune into CKLW and WILS from Chicago to get my rock n roll fix at night.
@@LordKenebutch That is so cool, those really were the days. How about channel 9 from Canada! Being up north like you are, ever heard of Miller lake in Canada?
The Fabulous Mrs Maisel brought me here!!
Susan has a voice like an angel and Terry is one of the 70's greatest song writers
This aired the day after I was born. What a great year 1971 was!
Played all the time on AM radio in Canada in early 70s
I met them just before they married at the Bistro on 4th avenue Vancouver B.C. 1966. What a flashback . I remember their guitarist a an instrument , he called a Gniht . . . pronounced Genit . Or Thing spelt backward. One can not forget such a thing !
What a song...way ahead of its time
I searched for this song for many years ... prior Google/UA-cam. It made a huge impression on me as a tween. When I found it again as a 20-something, the power was not diminished. The line of "Evil grows in cracks and holes" is one of the best line is pop music.
These two made some incredible music!
The strumming/solo by Terry at 1:38 is sublime. I know it inspired Kurt Cobain and the influence can be heard in some of Black Francis' work as well.
Damn i was thinking the same thing, intro to Smells Like Teen Spirit
Back then this song was a good one to smoke up to and we did
Saw them in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan back in the 70's. Worth every dime. Was extra sweet because Susan Jacks originated from Saskatoon.
Back when they played 2 shows in 1 night at the Centennial Auditorium.
Back in 69-70 we loved the Poppy Family here in their hometown Vancouver BC.
Great song. Great duet. Great when they went solo. And Canadian, eh! Always enjoyed their music when I was kid back in the late 60s, early 70s when I started listening to the radio (CHUM in Toronto).
MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
Brought me here.🤘
I stumbled across this and got goosebumps as soon as I heard it. I was only 10 when this song was a hit and just loved it!
Dave Brittain totally agree with you!!!! Their music is perfectly tight, yet so natural....and dark in a very cool way
I had such a crush on her when I was a kid. Probably from the Where you going Billy song. Sounded so sad.
Me to! Same age to!
Yes songs now are so auto tuned and tend to lack personality. There are only a few musicians out there now that I really like Adele and Coldplay are the first two good ones that come to mind.
Me too!! I was 12
I’m here before the sonic movie makes this song big again.
The song was never really big to begin with.
It was a top 10 hit in Canada, and my favourite Poppy Family song.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear it again yesterday.
I was here 40-some years ago. This song got big airplay on radio stations in Canada that were popular across the border, like CHUM and CKLW, and on U.S. stations along the Great Lakes.
Always loved this,.''I'm gonna love you too'' was my fave..When we had decent tap water that wasn't toyed with,.and most foods were normal,.you can eat..
These 2 individuals deserve a PRRRRROOMOTION!!!!!!
Listening online to Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada W1440 oldies radio station which brought me here! So cool to here such again! So cool!!! Peace all!
Growing up Canadian and listening to Anne Murray and Gordon Lightfoot, I wasn't just introduced to good music, I was introduced to harmonies. I feel in love with the Mamas and Papas and the Poppy Family. I consider their music to be the background to my life....heartbreak, perseverence and independence. As far as Susan Jacks and her voice goes, I consider her to be the foremost feamle singer of her time and she has successfully left an imprint on my heart. This music is timeless.......
Such a dope song. Love that Jim is back in a big, perfectly crazy way 😎
Music IS a time machine
Wow great Song
No one:
Literally no one:
Robotnik dancing to this: :))
Jim's brain: 🕺🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿
Group was way ahead of their time. Legit greatness.
I sure do! They're not around anymore but as a Canadian, I remember their music fondly! Which Way You Goin', Billy!!!!!
Old Vancouver lives!
Thanks for remembering.
50 years and still awesome!
Terry had the best porkchop sideburns of the early 70's and what can you say about Susan? absolutely gorgeous!!
oh, this song was a hit...i remember it!
One of my favorite songs on the Canadian Mint album.
Wow...and I'm going to feature that album on my Facebook Page Post " I K-Tel You (It's Original) and just posted this song for my post "Made In Canada" ...you got good taste....and everyone gets a like....haha.....
and that took a while for all the likes....haha...have a great weekend and week....Joe
I loved this song when it came out...still sounds great and even more truth to it...
“Our job is to secure it. Neutralize it. See what make it tick.”
i play this 45 all the time--it is great songwriting-sept-1971-love ya
RIP. Susan ,a beautiful voice and for people who knew her, a lovely human being.
Is it just me or is this is so underrated
Perhaps by today's standards, but back then not so much haha. Nothing special really, just a charming pop song
Coworker played this at work. I've never been more in love with a song.
RIP Susan Jacks 😢
That is a truely timeless classic!

Hello Mary, How are you doing?
End credits of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel brought me here! And I love the rest of their songs!

I want to thank Jim Carrey for introducing this song into the Sonic movie. This song fits Dr. Robotnik as he is growing evil.

Don't know why this song never made it higher than it did (#43 on BB Hot 100). Late Summer of '71...I was 14 going into the 9th grade that fall. To you, Dena...whereever you are.

Love this song my mom sang it to me when I was a kid how’s time fly’s
Almost everyone: “I am here after the Sonic movie”
Me: *Trying to copy Jim’s dance while hearing this song*
I never knew Terry Jacks was the Poppy Family. Learn something new everyday whether I want to or not. I have this 45 and always loved this song as to why I came here to listen to it. I despised Seasons in the Sun.
+Thebe Bashaleebee Sorry you did not like Seasons in the Sun; It was one of the only songs that made Billboard top hits////
cpugnome My mother (god rest her soul) loved Seasons in the Sun. My 2yr old niece died that year and that song would remind my mother of her. Little did she know what the lyrics were actually about.
For me ... ugh. I put in my personal top ten of suck sounds of the seventies.
+Thebe Bashaleebee SS, I will take back my comment....
I am honestly so shocked to discover that this song was such an old song, i had thought it was created solely for the sonic the hedgehog movie as it fits Jim Careys Robotnik so perfectly, and the beginning baseline even reminds me of robotniks boss music in sonic 2, just a perfectly selected song and credit where it is due to the original artist and to the studio for seeing the potential :D
I am honestly so shocked by your ignorance. The Hollywood exploits music and artists' work all the time.
Jim Carey recommended this song himself - in an interview he talked about growing up in Canada in the early 70's when this song was very popular and he thought it would be perfect for that scene... complete with ad-libbed dance moves as only he can do...
Great Vancouver talent never forgotten!
"The Sonic Movie brought me here"
"The Sonic Movie brought us all here, Karen!"
Nope. I came here as I remembered hearing it in English class in 2008
I knew about it a long, long time ago because I'm Canadian.
No i heard in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel :)
Oh yeah baby! Canadian 70s music in all its lip-sync glory from the days few Canadians had cable TV. In those times the majority of this music could be had on K-Tel vinyl...and it was glorious.
Oh how I remember this song. I loved when I first heard it all those years ago and it loses nothing with age.
I like the guitar solo in the middle: nice lick!!
I love how everyone came because of sonic movie and are saying “here before sonic movie fans come to this video”
"Ironic"
Some people here are from the early test screenings no doubt haha great song definitely
I remember when it came out. ! Eff the sonic movie.
No blue hedgehog brought me here, but the Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
Now this song is starting to be my favorite

Somehow, someway, this song found me. I've never been able to forget it, singing the chorus under the shower, hearing the guitar's parts in so many other songs, it followed me. Now I see this 70's people with strange hairdo's, awkward faces and luminiscent clothing and laugh at them, but man, this song, this song...
Found it! The oldest comment on this video. If you haven't watched "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie, this song is used in a scene with Jim Carrey dancing.
Wow, found an og that heard this song a decade before sonic came out
So this is where the riff to Smells Like Teen Spirit came from in the instrumental break.
YESSSSS I Agree with the Nirvana comment
blablah blah. Omg, i was thinking the same thing.
Vancouver band that must have got a lot of airplay in Seattle
I didn't hear it until until I read your comment so true. Love this band
Odd. I was thinking Rape me.
I came because I know good music
Neverr heard this before. Never forget it now.
Wow this sounds amazing for a live performance !
Judging from the fact that you’re hearing bass, drums, a second guitar and so on and not seeing any of these, that there is no amplifier in sight for Terry’s electric guitar, and that this version of the song sounds precisely like the original recording, I would venture to guess that they are lip-synching.
@@fourteengreen1213 I'd say it was at least the instruments. The vocals do sound live though.
100% mimed. Great song though
