Love this classic musical. You are right it is more of a comedy than a serious drama and should be seen as such. The time period setting should also be taken into account because it wasn’t uncommon for marriages of convenience or mail order brides to happen like in Love Comes Softly and more recently The Proposal, The Magic of Ordinary Days, What Happens in Vegas, A Marriage of Convenience, etc. It’s always interesting to see how the story plays out.
The music and dancing are my favorite parts. It was nominated for 5 Oscars (including Best Picture) and won for best music/score. Gideon is my favorite brother and the barn raising sequence is so wonderful and fun. He wasn’t a professional dancer but they incorporated his background in gymnastics and acrobatics in the film. Fun fact about the actor who played Ben. He was a former baseball player and couldn’t dance so he’s always at the back. He did do his own singing though (Caleb’s voice was dubbed by Bill Lee). They had to use painted backgrounds because they took some of its budget and gave it to the supposed bigger hit Brigadoon (which ironically flopped). Some of the brides dresses had to made from quilts gotten at Thrift stores, which I think gave it a more rustic farm like feel. Miley’s character is fantastic in how she doesn’t let them push her around and brings out the best in the guys, even Adam eventually. It does have its problems but is a great pick for Family Movie Night.

Love this film. My daughter has a crush on Howard Keele.

It's impossible for me to take this film seriously, and I imagine others may feel the same way. My parents have owned this on vhs for as long time, and I don't even know how long it's been. Despite that, I don't recall seeing it in my childhood, but at least some of us did watch it together as a family eventually, and I certainly found it to be odd. Even sometime later watching it with a group including others around my age, it's as if we were watching it ironically, given how absurd the story structure seems to be. A good example is the Lonesome Polecat number, as all the brothers are clearly feeling down, but the whole scene is so oddly put together that is comes off as comical rather than emotional. Of course, I do find it absurd how easily certain characters fall in love, even if it's not always instant. I will admit that the big dance number does show the real talent that was on display. This is a film I don't imagine ever choosing to watch on my own, but it's been an interesting experience watching it with a group where were all kind of pointing out the absurdity together in some way, whether verbally or other ways. It still is interesting how no one faces consequences for questionable actions, but this is clearly a story that isn't focused on a realistic portrayal of relationships.

The first time I saw this in my teens, I thought it was hilarious. I saw it again a few years ago and thought it was... fine. As you seem to agree, the music and dancing really elevate it. It's not all that funny, it doesn't have that many jokes considering what a flagrantly ridiculous setup the film has, giving it the perfect excuse to have as much humor as it wants. What jokes it has are fine, but there's not a lot of them, considering it's a comedy. It mostly relies on the absurdity of the premise to keep people entertained. Good movie, well acted and well sung, but certainly not a great one. I'm glad you didn't find it problematic, I could understand if someone did but as you say it is so obviously ridiculous it just didn't quite set off a lot of alarm bells for me.

I don't think it has that many jokes but I do think it is very silly
