My mother is 104 and we show her pictures of her at 20 during the war at formal parties, sipping cocktails in a gorgeous dress, surrounded by handsome men in full uniform, or when she was a stewardess with BOAC welcoming Charlie Chaplin on board. This video too is so bittersweet. Sweet because it reminds us of the glory and beauty and grace of youth, and bitter, because unstoppable time robs us all of those things we failed to treasure then, and at the end, tomorrow disappears. I am old too and to be old, only then can you really appreciate these closing lines from a great novel that celebrated youth. "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter-to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning-- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

People often seem to forget that the old man or woman in a nursing home was once a young vibrant person. Some of them even extremely fit attractive people who had a great party life
Matt Hill I work in a nursing home I do maintenance. Ur exactly right feels like most people should respect them more. We will all be lucky if we can live as long as some people do.
I’ve been around since the beginning of UA-cam and to this day this is still one of the all time most memorable, impactful videos I’ve ever watched on here. The reflections on life, time, age, youth, passion, joy, memory, purpose, meaning… so many thoughts inspired in my mind just by observing this beautiful woman reliving moments from the glory of her past.
I think, as she was watching with a serious face, that she was remembering the choreography and all the things you have to pay attention to when you perform: where your space is, what the musical cue is, the blister in her shoe, how the dancer next to her was moving into her space, like that. Dancers like this make it look like you just get up and shake it and have a great time, but she was remembering all the elements that you attend to as a professional. Wonderful video, thank you.

She has a sharp memory for being 102. Love her. Such a beautiful dancer. It was so great this guy did research and found videos of her dancing. That is so sweet.
Agreed, although a statement by the channel of the video was made recently implying she has died as of now, I think this is collective knowledge brought up from someone who experienced this being young
So sad to think everyone in the dancing videos are dead….yet we are seeing them on this video in their youth, so young vibrant full of life. Life is crazy.
@@mvvpvals - It is a little hard to tell with the quality of the old footage, but she looked like she was well below 30. She looked maybe around early to mid 20's at the latest at the time.
My husband saw this and said he believes he had Alice as a patient when he was an EMT in NYC when she was 90. He remembers how pretty she was then and, even though injured and alone for 2 days, she made no fuss, casually sharing how she pulled herself along the carpet and up on her couch and didn't call anyone because she, "didn't want to be a bother. " She lit up as she told him of her career as a dancer and who she performed with, She had the same beautiful smile and shining eyes. She was so independent !
I don't think it's sad at all. There's no reason to believe they didn't die of old age surrounded by their loved ones with reunification with their husbands on their mind. Death is natural. What greater fate can someone ask than to die peacefully at a ripe old age with those you care about at your side?
What a great & sweet thing this man did. What a sweet lady she seemed to be. I'm glad she had the opportunity to see herself and relive those memories before she passed. Like she said, she got paid to do something she loved doing. I bet she had a blast doing it all too. Life is fun when you enjoy your work. Not many of us can say that.
I'm currently taking care of my 85-year-old grandmother with dementia and talking to her like to a child is the only thing that makes her cooperate and respond. It's not like I'm choosing to do that but it does wonders and makes her more active.

I love this video so much. I’ve seen it a few times over the last few years. My grandmother has recently enter hospice at the nursing home so it especially hits home as of late. What a moment. I’m so glad it was captured
It's crazy how much she still looks like her younger self, even what is probably like 80 years later. I'm sorry for her passing, but grateful I got to see this video... even if it was 5 years after the fact.
She is shaking so much, and every time she raises her arms, and then they shake....it hurts to see her body suffering, but Im so happy to see her spirit still staying strong.
i’m 18 and currently pursuing dance as a career because i can’t picture my life without it. this made me cry knowing that my days will be filled with memories like these to look back on. it warms my heart that her and i share the same love and passion for this art.
I wish we could all realise that the person inside the old, worn out body IS THE SAME PERSON who was inside the young beautiful one. We make such assumptions about people based on appearance and our own prejudices. I love how she lights up when she's watching her young self.
Until my parents have grown older and I grew more mature, I got comfortable over time as they and all elders aged. I’m not sure if it’s prejudicious but rather, not being around our elders and feeling uncomfortable around them because we feel we can’t relate. We, too, will age and hopefully we can have the younger people so kind like this. Our dad passed away last year at the age of 84 from Alzheimer’s. However, he was verbal and could remember things from when he was a boy. I was honored to have been with him at the end to hear stories I never knew. RIP

She is still beautiful and looks like she lived a good life. Esp if you do what you love doing.. And because of that look she lived this long. Id like to think when we pass on we go to heaven when we were atbour prime. She will def dance again. Bless her...
Great lessons from this kind soul. Enjoy your youth and mobility, keep it as long as you can. She lived a longer life than many of us ever can dream and she did it her way. God bless and her memory lives on through videos just like this one.
6:03 "I used to often say to myself, I am being paid to do something that I enjoy and I would do it for free. Because it just felt so good doing it." Best career advice right there.
No, it's not good advice. If you love something and you get paid for it, then make a living off of it! It was just her expressing how much she loved what she did, not advice.
Thanks to these young people we have a wonderful record of not only dance but also of a wonderful woman who loved to dance. It is strange that although age alters us a little, we don't change. This was special. It's good for the WORLD to see an unique experience where an 102-year old woman can see herself on film, where her 20-30 something year old self is dancing and talking...just amazing. The years between the events are staggering. Possibly 70 years. What a beautiful woman, even in her death. She lived LIFE well.
Its really humbling to think she was young in her 20s like me at one point. She probably doubted that she would grow to be old in the blink of an eye, and so do I. RIP Alice Barker 1912-2016
U mean 1910-2014 bc she is already dead by now and she cannot be 108ys old because that is too much Years for her to live and plus this was 6 years ago
I am so glad she was able to see these. As bittersweet as it likely was for her to replay such amazing memories, to reminisce on how big of a deal she was at one time- as she approaches the last season of her well lived life. So blessed to have kept her memories & mental health. I could listen to her stories all day! RIP Ms. Barker ❤

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter-to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning--
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
