    My stepmom was a control freak and a monster. She wouldn’t let us watch TV and the only thing she would let us watch on the VCR were musicals. She had only one VHS - Seven Bride for Seven Brothers. We watched it and liked it. So my brother and I decided to weaponize it and we would watch it on loop CONSTANTLY. We watched it so much that we could recite it almost verbatim. So in the car, we’d recite the whole thing and watch my stepmom slip ever more into madness. We did this for over a year. Eventually she broke down and said we could watch whatever we wanted as long as it wasn’t Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. We kept watching the movie out of spite and it remains my favorite musical. Bless this movie’s beautiful hide.

    Jacques D'Amboise who plays brother Efraim, was a neighbor of mine in NYC. I grew up with his kids. Lovely family.

    The actress in this film, *Julie Newmar* who played the character "Dorcas Gaylen," (one of the Brides), is the eponymous actress who actually makes a cameo appearance at the end of the film, "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! *Julie Newmar* " starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo (the three of them play Drag Queens), and she (Julie Newmar) is the one who crowns "Chi-Chi Rodriguez" at the beauty pageant at the very end of that movie.
    This mentioned film has also been reacted to on this channel, and is one of my favourite film reactions by Kemi.

    25:47 In the stage version, he pronounces them "man and wife'' six times. I played Gideon when I was around 18 (I'm 55 now and still performing). Russ Tamblyn, who plays Gideon here, is the last surviving brother. He's probably best known for playing Riff in "West Side Story'' (1961). It's a shame you had to cut all the music, considering it's a reaction to a musical, but good on you for watching these classics. Keep it up!

    With regards to how long they were snowed in, I have always believed the kidnapping took place in October for this reason. After the June Bride song, the girls continue on singing, counting down the months from November to May. That is seven months. In October there would be plenty of snow in the mountains to cause the avalanche and fill the pass even without a lot of snow down below. They did have some snow and it was cold but Benjamin said he was leaving before they got snowed in, so they hadn't had anything heavy yet. Following that timeline Millie would have been a month or two pregnant before Adam left. With no home pregnancy tests around and no doctor available she probably didn't know for sure until she had missed a couple of periods and her dresses started getting a little tighter, not to mention maybe feeling queasy. According to the song spring would have finally come in May below the mountains but it would have taken several weeks yet for the pass to open up. I always figured that with that schedule Millie gave birth to Hannah in about the second half of May and the girls all ended up being June brides after all.

    The stealing of women is an ancient practice. Not a reasonable one. This is a classic musical with some good points about how to socialize mountain men.

    This was beautiful; you noted and caught EVERY little nuance of this unexpectedly wise and moving film. No surprise that the screenplay was written by Hackett and Goodrich, the duo who also wrote "It's a Wonderful Life", another masterpiece of emotional, multi-leveled story telling. So many meaningful, telling moments here: go back and watch Adam as he & Millie take a break from their wagon ride; he's JUST ABOUT to tell Millie about the situation at home..but can't do it, since she breaks into song ("Wonderful Day"). Her dreams of their wedded life, the way in which Millie initially wants to clean up the brothers and get them the hell OUT of the house...but gradually grows to love and cherish them, the way Adam's life-long attitude towards women ("what do I need manners for? I've already got me a wife") are challenged by the petite Millie's courage, love and sense of honor..and his conversion. And the scene when Benjamin (Jeff Richards) tells Millie he's leaving the farm, and Millie tells Adam of her hopes and dreams: families, babies, get-togethers, holidays, etc..... I get misty-eyed every time, because that's what America USED to feel like when this film was made (I was there). And to think she was originally repulsed by these guys and wanted to marry them off ASAP; now THAT's growth...emotional, even spiritual.
    And yet so many short-sighted people turn "7 Brides" off in disgust, due to their phony claims of "misogynism". And even though you saw the same thing, your wise, warm-hearted perception immediately grasped the depth and humanity .. and the emotional GROWTH of the film, from one beautifully-written scene to the next. Watching your reaction was a very rewarding experience for me; makes me realize just how excellent a film "7 Brides" is.
    PS-- I believe Russ Tamblyn (Gideon) is still alive as of this writing. Tommy Rall (Frankincense--Red shirt), Jaques D'Amboise (Ephraim, green shirt), Matt Mattox (Caleb, yellow checked shirt, who was living and teaching in France), and Marc Platt (Daniel, purple shirt..who was a member of the Ballet Russe of Monte Carlo and lived past 100), all passed away relatively recently. But they live on....

    This is one of my favorite movies from Old Hollywood; I think the talent was just something else back then with actors not only acting, but singing and dancing as well. This was outrageous even in it's time, but so much fun after all. The studio cut their budget when they asked for more, it was not supposed to be a success. One of my uncles used to say, Is that So? Just how these guys did. My sister watched this on tv, at high school the next day, all the girls were chatting about those georgeous guys. Yes they did dye their hair. The schoolboys got so jealous, where can we see our rivals. They weren't told, they'd all be granpas by then. My ister still chuckles at that one from 20 years ago.
    The movie was even more of a success on video than it had been before. The guy who played Ben married Dorcas in real life. Most of the other guys were ballet dancers, Gideon was a street dancer, tumbler, he helped the choreographer.

    Adam never cared about his looks. It was more about him being confident. If you listen to what he says in the beginning he always gets what he wants. He wanted to get married, so that is what he went and did. He was confident enough in himself to know he will get what he wants. When he saw MIlly he knew what he wanted and was determined to have her. He was just lucky that she fell in love with him when she saw him. I grew up on this movie I watched all my life because it is a family favorite along with many others.

      @cpete2976 2 роки тому +6

      Really? Misogynistic? Come on. You're taking it way too seriously. The movie was made in 1954 (pre-womens lib) about fictional events in 1850 (pre-pre-womens lib). I grew up in the 60s/70s and I am a feminist but I see nothing misogynistic about this movie. It's a lighthearted and well-done joy of a musical with humor, love, and incredible singing and dancing. Plus Millie is in charge: she doesn't let Adam sleep with her on their wedding night, she lays down the rules of the house to her brothers-in-law, and after the kidnapping she forbids the men from entering the house and tells off Adam in no uncertain terms. She is gently but firmly in control the entire time. What a strong female charscter. You go Millie!

    • @ruthfoley2580

      @@cpete2976 yes really. It doesn't matter that it was made "pre women's lib." This attitude is why we needed the movement in the first place.
