This looks like a delight! We've watched Annie a few times, and I try to convince them to watch an older version. But every time, they want to see the 2014 version because "it's so cute!" *sobs* 😆Not all of it is cute, some if it is awful! 🙃

This is the best filmed version of Annie in my opinion. I also think the 2021 live version on NBC was pretty good. I saw it on the stage before seeing any filmed version, so I found the 1982 version a disappointment (especially that unnecessary train bridge climax). I think the 2014 version was made by people who don't love musicals, and it shows. The 2014 version is easily the weakest version.
To me the most important element is to get Ms. Hanigan correct. Kathy Bates plays her with pure rage, and I think that is a good call. In the 2021 version, Taraji P. Henson went full-on camp, and that also worked. I don't think Carol Burnett's 1982 drunk worked, and I have no idea what Cameron Diaz was doing in the 2014 version.
Trivia note: Andrea McArdle was also supposed to cameo in the 2021 version as Eleanor Roosevelt, but her dad got sick so she had to bow out.
