    There is not thing better than a calm, hype-free, fact-focused discussion, during which interviewer does not create a narrative, but, instead poses interesting & highly-relevant questions, then provides a true 'expert' on the main topic sufficient time to intelligently & thoroughly answer those questions & any follow-up queries!       By refusing to present insight regarding the Ukrainian defensive layout, while at the same time making unsubstantiated claims about Russia's losses or perspectives, this gentleman disproves the mission of ISW itself: that it is a non-partisan research-based institution that aims to study and illustrate to the grand public the latest developments in global military operations. This think-tank should more accurately be named "the institute for the propaganda of war".

    The fact Ukraine has not taken delivery of much aid these past three months yet Russia's full 24/7 war economy is still only able to move slowly is astounding. The resistance of Ukraine is beyond belief. It cannot however last forever without scaling of European assistance and hopefully more American aid packages. This is borrowed time, but what it should demonstrate is that if the West shifts its weight enough to lean on the scales harder than it has before Russia can definitely lose this war. For now it is still up to the West, although the clock is ticking.

    It's just that naturally advances are repulsed at a high cost. The Russian army is not really going anywhere except into the dirt of Ukraine. Meanwhile improvements in ammunition and supplies and time to further delays in Russian advances allows for improved defenses which favors Ukraine.
    The war could easily last another 5 years before Russia is forced to retreat from Ukrainian lands. Which spells the end for Russia's continued advance into Eastern Europe which is just a Putin fever dream.

    To the statements about Russian red lines and nuclear use, I would add that it is not surprising that Russian nuclear threats have always turned out to be empty, and will probably continue to be, because there is no credible scenario in which Russian nuclear use actually improves their situation in any way. Breaking the nuclear taboo is something that countries that Russia relies heavily on (China, India) very much do not want - China believes it it already conventionally ascendant, and does not wish everything to be destroyed in nuclear war. And as for NATO, Russian nuclear use would result in either massive NATO conventional response (which is the exact opposite of what Russia wants), or nuclear war that results in the annihilation of Russia (not a good outcome for them either).

    It is so typical of Western Europe to say "oh we didn't see that coming" and "we must never let it happen like this again". We should listen to our Baltic friends, they, if any, know what Ukraine and the rest of Europe need to do to secure our future. Right now, Ukraine is paying the highest price for its survival and for our safety, now we must all give everything we can to help them. It is our damned duty. Do your duty and earn your rights.
    We simply have to stop seeing the world as we wish it to be and start seeing it for what it is.

    Is Ukraine striking Russian railroad tracks? I read that the bulk of Russian war materiel is shipped by rail, and rail lines are fixed locations, so should be easy targets. That would stall whole Russian army, right?

      @@Lowezarstrikes to rail infrastructure requires precision and large payloads. Structures tend to be very robust, during WW2 the critical Bielefeld viaduct proved beyond the capabilities of the US airforce and RAF to hit with conventional bombs and the RAF had to use gigantic earthquake bombs that had sufficient power so that a near miss would be sufficient to destroy the structure and make repair difficult.

    (This comment was written around July 24, 2023.) On or near July 13, when I was in Kramatorsk, Ukraine, and on a day before the media reported the counter offense was on a "pause" I set forth the reasons why the counter offense won't be as successful as anticipated: (1) Russian military much stronger than what the media, the news commentators, the U.S. military and others make it sound; (2) the delay in providing Ukraine with military assistance it needed sooner and more of it; (3) failing to provide cluster bombs in a timely manner, and as such. only after the counter offense had started; (4) not enough Ukrainian brigades and the ones they have are inexperienced; (5) delays caused massive Russian defenses to be built with layers of defenses, including tank traps, barbed wire, mine fields; more barbed wire, dragon teeth, fortress like bunkers with machine guns and artillery behind that, (6) absence of enough long range missiles to hit Russian targets far behind the lines (obviously the Kerch Bridge cannot be taken out by Ukraine); (7) the delivery of mine field clearing equipment (8) no air cover with F-16 fighters. Is there or isn't there mine field clearing equipment? If there is such equipment it is impossible to accept anything less than the sabotaging of the counter offense by the West by not providing it to Ukraine before the counter offense started. (Little did I know that some Republicans, the Speaker of the House, Michael Johnson, and Donald Trump would sabotage the $62 Billion Ukrainian Aid Package that the Secs of Defense and State asked for and which the Senate would pass.) How could the chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, former news media military commentators, the secretary of defense, who was a top military general before he was sworn in as defense secretary, and the president of the United States have failed by not making sure Ukraine had the mine clearing equipment if it needed it? This is a scandal to me. As far as I know, we've had one scandal, i.e. the soldier who posted secret information on social media. There will be more scandals if some of this is not addressed: long range missiles delays, ramping up of ammunition factories, providing enough tanks, Bradley's and other vehicle, (mine sweeping clearing equipment); greater training bases for Ukrainians. The longer this war goes on, the more difficult it will be for civilians, not to mention for the soldiers. One common statement I heard from mid-level Ukrainian officials and other Ukrainians, is "[t]he West thought the war would be over in three days once the Russians tried to occupy Kyiv." The Ukrainians have fought successfully since March 24, 2022. I think today, it will have been 17 months (currently nearly 25 months) since the illegal war started. The Ukrainians have proven to the West that they deserve far more support than we are currently giving them. Why is it that the Americans and other countries are not putting their backbone into it when from what I see, the average Ukrainian soldier is putting in 150% into it? I see soldiers wheeled around from their waist up, and others walking on prosthesis legs. I don't hear complaints. I see a proud mother with her son cut in half parading her son near Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) In Kyiv. When I was 10 miles from Bakhmut or 8 mlies from Klishchiivka for a few hours during the rotation of brigades I felt adrenaline like I never felt before. I saluted and waved my hat to tank crews roaring by. (In the future is there going to be a shortage of gasoline and tires. I see heavy use of vehicles and tire tread wear near one of the major fronts.) Give them the weapons so they can have a fighting chance. The civilians are still in it. They carry on in these near to the front towns. We must push the Russians back and we must not let them have one more inch. The babies, the young 7, 8, and 9 year olds, the teenagers who wait on tables, and the mothers who carry on with their babies and children in Kramatorsk, while soldiers come and go, must be reminded and must be assured that the Russians will be pushed back so that their way of life can return to a more normal one. Having wrote all of this in July of 2023, I would never that believe that the United States would prevent badly needed military and other aid to Ukraine.

    I thought ISW presented the capture of Robotyne as a significant gain by the Ukr side during last year's Spring counteroffensive (that actually happened in the Summer). They seem to contradict themselves now, saying Robotyne is not actually relevant. I wonder why.

    Orlovka has fallen to the Russians. This same group of people never predicted that Advidka the most fortified town in Donestky would be taken by the Russian shovels...the West and its war commentators have failed to understand the basics of an attritional war. Its mot about speed and manouvre amd raising of flags ..its a marathon and that's why the Russians have the initiative. Its not about now and tomorrow...its about the goals and objectives.

Russia gave up economic ties , diplomatic relations and future perspective to take some land for more gas and oil. Propagandists and Putin himself have to keep talking about nazis, satanists and biolabs so Russians don't find out it's all about money and not protecting ethnic Russians in Donbas.The day Ukraine started fighting back , Russia already lost , they just can't stop and admit it so they double down no matter the cost.

    Reported yesterday 15 Ukrainian brigades about 65,000 troops flooded into the outer part of Avdeyevka conducting a massive counter attack, unsuccessfully to date.
    Ukraine can't hold indefinitely in open lands without much in the way of prepared defensives.
    Once these brigades are badly depleted I don't think there's much left! The end is closer than Baros suggests.

      They have plenty of ammo its the NATO way of saturated fire that goes through three times the normal use! Ukraine has used saturation fire to overcome disparity in manpower.
      There going through hundreds of billions in ammo because their not paying for it.

      It wasn't that Ukrainian Forces were trying to please the US Republicans. It was time for Ukrainians to get out of Avdivka because they were out of ordinance, had no air cover and had lost too many troops. Ukraine held Avdivka to destroy as much of the Russian military equipment and personnel as they could. Leaving Avdivka was always going to happen. Without supplies of ammo and ordinance, it happened sooner and more Ukrainians paid with their lives. 🥺💔

      @SueUTube Have you actually been following developments in the war? How did Ukraine persuade the Russians to drop hundreds of glide bombs, 500 kg, 1000kg, 1500 kg onto the town so nothing remained but rubble?
      Congress had majorities of support for Ukraine, House of Representatives needed no persuading about that, but as was revealed publicly Trump told the Speaker of the House not to put the bill forward for voting. Nothing to do with Ukraine "transparently" conceding ground, everything to do with Russian interference.
      The Speaker's election campaign was partly paid for by Russians, when it was pointed out the Speaker returned the money.
