Putin has ‘failed’ by not taking Kharkiv since his invasion of Ukraine began | John Herbst

  • “If Ukraine had F-16s and permission from the United States to attack Russian military in Russia, the siege of Kharkiv would not be such a problem.”
The fact that Putin has never taken Kharkiv since this invasion began is “a failure”, despite Zelensky asking the US for stronger aid defences, says former US ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst.

Europe should step up and show strong leadership and take responsibility of the defense architecture of Europe, instead of relying and blaming US.

The EU is a Confederacy, not a Republic like the US, so its hard to imagine how that is at all possible, especially when it comes to national defense. The US Federal Govt has control over the Texas National Guard, but there's no mechanism you can imagine where (for example) Poland would give control of its armed forces over to Berlin or Paris. However NATO is and has always been the best solution to this problem - the problem is that Europe hasn't been taking it seriously enough. The EU's defense industry is token boutique weapons here and there with no strategic depth or capacity. Europe needs to become a better partner to the US, who listens to and consults more closely with allies who have significant capacity for defense.

US is the one who signed the Budapest memorandum and so has a moral if not legal responsibility for supporting Ukraine. The EU didn't, yet has supported Ukraine to the best of their ability, unlike the recalcitrant US.

But you mean the recent delay in the House, well how about all the EU states such as Budapest who try to derail the aid on that side?
