- Data journalist Matilda Davies opened her first Facebook account aged 11. Years later, she requested all of the information the social media behemoth had been collecting on her. What she uncovered shocked her. So how exactly does the data gathering work? And what can we all do to claw back some privacy?
Guest: Matilda Davies, data journalist, The Times and The Sunday Times.
Host: Manveen Rana

“If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product.”
Haven't used Facebook for years. I got kicked off for a week for telling a guy who used sexist misogynistic comments to remember his brain was several inches above his belt buckle. I guess he didn't like my response and complained. So I canceled my Facebook account and haven't been back.
You are not alone. :)
High quality discussion. I thought the days of newspapers covering this kind of thing had long gone
Meta can go & * * * * itself.
They have recorded that message and it will be used to lower your social credit score.
@@pauls3075 I couldnt care a less.
There is nothing mysterious about Meta and other social platforms knowing a lot about its users. It's like what the whole concept is built on. 😉
I was on Facebook once. I used a false name, was eventually discovered. They demanded my real name and a copy of my photo ID to get back on. I told them what orifice to put it in. Never heard from them again.
I'm a proponent of 'Open' & believe 'Closed', privacy, should be kept to a minimum, akin to the police keeping force to a minimum.
Informative episode, thank you.
Moving forward, I will mention, the more we share with the group, the more informed the group can become.
What is it about Zuckerberg I don’t like the look of?
So these giant platforms(Google too)are nothing good but are huge data miners.
Sneaky!
What information is The Times harvesting from its readers and subscribers and what is it sharing with Meta and anyone else for cash? 🤔
Its easy to mess with Meta. Just keep changing your name. Their algo is too dumb to keep track of you, and never check the box that allows web searches to find your account. The ads will stop and so will unsolicited articles in your feed.
Nothing new under the sun.
Just don't do anything on the internet what you not want to share.
It's as simple as that.
They only know what you let them know
Great subject but do we have to look at Mark Zuckerberg the whole time. It's frightening.
Always hit reject all...
Thanks for this! I'm surprised people agree to cookies. Occasionally I can't see a picture or video, so what?. (I use Mozilla Firefox on 2 computers, including a splendid old desk computer with most of its innards replaced over 3 decades.) My mobile phone is the type used by criminals, a "burner phone". But I'm still going to download my meta data.
Shocking …..NOT
Why did they change the name of the series from "Stories of our Times" to "The Story"? The old name was much better.
Why does Zuckerberg look and animate like an animatronic robot? It's Uncanny Valley.
I don't care. He didn't ask my permission.
U.re talking about democracy while u can.t say what u think anymore without being acussed of anti-something;)
Sorry, Zuck, I never used any of your nonsense You got nothing on me.
He owns UA-cam, doesn't he?
