- “He's completely flailing around. He doesn't know which strategy to take.”
Peter Mandelson, Polly Mackenzie and Daniel Finkelstein join Matt Chorley to discuss whether the prime minister’s game is up or if he can find a winning strategy as the general election draws nearer.

2 simple rules for life;
No.1 - Never trust a tory
No.2 - Never forget rule number 1
of any colour
And the rest ffs 😂
Rule 3-If in doubt, refer to Rule 1😊
You should do a special ‘How to Lose an Election’ devoted entirely to little Rishi Rich 😂
14 years of decay, eroding living standards, eroded rights, eroded services.... and yet the people who caused all that want us to believe THEY are the only people who can stop it? Abusive relationships springs to mind. Get these scumbags out
The likes of Rishi Sunak are nothing but abusive partners, the kind that beat you black and blue, steal your money and cheat and lie, but beg you for another chance as ‘they’ll change’. Until the next time, and the next….
It's not an abusive relationship since the electorate can simply walk away and vote for another party.
Just imagine what happened of 100% of the electorate voted Greens, LibDems or independent candidates in the next election.
Sunak is flailing about wildly like a non swimmer in deep water. He's utterly hopeless and desperate.
He has been like this since day 1 of his premiership.
How very Peter Mandelson-like of Peter to deny saying something he was recorded saying... I'll always remember him speaking at a conference I attendend when doing my A-Levels in 1994. I've never seen a speaker so completely misjudge an audience as he did that day - he had the whole room against him within two paragraphs, and it was an audience that was overwhelmingly pro-Labour; he just radiated a contempt and arrogance perfectly designed to inspire hostility.
As it happens, I did eventually overcome that animosity towards him, but it took me years...
All the Labour Party need to do to in order to sway those undecided voters (if there are any) is to run an ad campaign showing a black and white picture of Liz Truss, looking at her most maniacal, with the slogan “I feel I have unfinished business”. Surefire winner.
or maybe a picture of dead kids in Iraq saying "remember the good times under labour"?
At least the Torys are moving in the right direction, towards the centre with the rest of us. Starmer is out running with the skinheads because that's his idea of ordinary people
@@Glasgow_kiss conservatives were absolutely on board with EVERYTHING George W. Bush did
Or the Conservative party could show Starmer weakly "kneeling" for a career criminal in the USA. It goes both ways.
@@seanoconnor8843 Example?
He's hanging on for dear life to fleece and squander every last penny the UK has
Just like Labour did last time in power. Reform required.
@@maccagrabmeName anything they did that was “squandered”. Try not to get your info from wiki or the Daily Mail.
If only we were as “ skint “ as 2010 …. Now debt trebled and debt to gdp doubled
@@Gary-le7dz that was a made up attack line by the tories. It was meant to be a joke line, that all previous incumbents used - as in left same type of letter. Yet the tories ran with it and the gullible idiotic public believed it and thus this myth was born.
Now look at the state of things.
@@Gary-le7dzand apart from the Tories’ personal wealth, can someone actually name ONE thing better today in this crumbling mess of a country that is better than in 2010? Just one thing?
Charitable of you to keep Daniel on to deliver his usual bucket of dull uninspired cope.
Imagine watching a load of gamblers in Vegas one week and then just grabbing the man who made alot of cash and appointing him PM
I give you Rishi Sunak PM of the UK and someone completely unsuited for Prime Minister.
He is out of his depth. Not a clue.
No real need for a Pod on this topic. 5 words says it all "DO NOT BE A TORY"
He should do what's best for the country and call an immediate election, instead he does what's best for Sunak and his cronies.
Not sure he even cares, lets face it the longer he stays the more money him, his wife, family and donors get, its not really that difficult a concept.
General Election is needed now.
What good would that do?
The pendulum has swung in favour of the workers at last. It's time to tell the employers how it's going to be. They have absolutely no choice. The world economy is about to explode with activity as the main populations achieve a civilised existence. A rising tide lifts all boats. The economy is no longer a problem for anybody
Come in Rishi Sunak - your time is up.
Putting yourself up as the change candidate followed by better the devil you know is about right for Sunak's level of competence.
If a dog were struggling as much as Roshi is then the vet would say something to the effect of “… the kindest thing to do would be… “ - call the effing election already
Daniel being on the show as former Executive Editor of The Times and former Executive of Policy Exchange is a massive conflict of interest. Plus his constant nonsensical contradictions of Mandelson and his incessant compium inhalation is distracting, could we please mute his mic?
deeply unserious "winning rather than principles" mentality
Forget an election just pack up and get out.
35:00 Polly is absolutely correct about the recklessness within government, especially with regard to higher education sector. I was told last week that I was losing my job at uni. at the end of August. But I will keep my rainbow lanyard- it represents something far more profound than this government will ever achieved or represent.
Mandelson remains as clueless and out of touch as this government.
The tory lib dem labour talking about greens was just so painful. As if their parties have a clear view of what they stand for and idea of how they will get there.
Can't believe they thought "Better the Devil you Know" was Sonya - it was by Kylie!
20:52 I checked Spotify - "Better The Devil You Know" was a song by Sonia, from her album of the same name. But Kylie's song is much better.
GET RID OF THE TORIES
I'm a middle England, middle class man, who is an independent voter. My vote is up for grabs. I have voted Labour before and i wont be voting for them this time. Why? Precisely because of people like Mandelson's characterisation of those who are deeply troubled by our support for Israel's horrific actions in Palestine as "Corbynista left wing extremists".
To quote Andrew Neil "if you knew how ridiculous that statement was you wouldn't have said it."
To much devils in both party's
What is Daniel Finkelsteins point, he goes round and round
Mandy liked Russian super yachts and cheap aluminium + Mates with Prince Andrew & Epstine. Why is he getting rolled out?

People just want to be able to afford a home and a decent quality of life
That means massively raising wages, or massively reducing the costs of housing and household bills
Alternatively, see what "solution" the far right offer. It will be a total con, but people who are desperate may well take that chance
Is anyone in the big parties really looking at the cost of housing and household bills?
An unelected NIGHTMARE.
Wow, so it's not good if Unions have input to a political party.
However, it is to OK for companies to literally purchase MPs as lobbyists to enable those companies to gain influence over legislation.
I must be blind, I can't see any difference in out comes between the two.

A lot of us know starmer will be just the same as sunak. We need an alternative
it was Kylie not Sonya - BETTER the devil you know.
There are two entirely different songs with that title. Kylie's is the earlier one from 1990. Sonia came 2nd in the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest with hers.
I would rather have Corbynistas in my party than a Far Right Tory like Natalie Elphicke.
I refuse to vote for a party that are willing to jam up their benches with the very people we want out of office.
Elphicke is standing down at the next election
In France I used to vote for the Socialists or the Greens, sometimes both (Green at the first round of the presidential election, Socialist at the second round). Then the French Greens merged with another pro environment party, that was also pro Europe and in a way more centrist, and I liked them even more. Then they turned watermelon (green on the outside, red on the inside), obsessed with culture wars, trans issues, being anti business, etc., they hardly ever mention the environment. They have become unelectable as a result.
Excellent discussion
Listen, the Prime Minature is way, way out of his depth, the sooner the sTories go th3 better !
" prime miniature " very good! he certainly is.
The Green Party refused to let Ken Livingstone join.
*Mandelson probably said "suppository". He has a one-track mind.*
Homophobic much?
@@yuna-1971 It may seem so, but not really, I simply don't like Peter Mandelson... Sorry! 👍 ❤
@@davidjames2083 that’s fair enough. I think he speaks a lot of good points tbh
The fact that Sunak ever occupied No 10 still boggles the mind brought up on an educational system based on the one left behind by the British Raj.
Nevertheless, it was a real life the empire strikes back situation between England and India.
However, the weakness was in the spearhead who think and behave more British than the average modern British politician. So, it won't surprise too many observers if Sunak does not survive the first real challenge that blows his way though that could very well betray a very limited understanding of modern English politics.
is Mandelson being disingenuous (with his "advice" to the Greens / Tories / LDs) just to be provocative ... or because he's so tribal he can't do anything else?
They clearly are scared of the Greens.
First they laugh at us, then they fight us, then we win

Mandy is riding the shirt tails of Starmer. Matt is such a lightweight, and the only serious person is Danny F, I'm a Labour supporter and party member
Re. Elphicke - whilst I wouldn't argue she behaved well in relation to her husband's case, I'm slightly surprised that it's apparently impossible for anyone to even attempt a degree of understanding. We all support the importance of making sure that victims feel they'll be believed if they come forward, but surely we get that the offender's wife might at least initially not react that way. She probably wouldn't have been with him if she'd thought him capable of that behaviour? In cases like this, the spouses and family of offenders are in a sense secondary victims, and I think we should have a tiny bit of empathy for the idea that it might take them a while to come round to accepting the truth of the allegations.
