Ben Hodges - The Siege of Crimea has Begun as Ukraine Takes Control over the Black Sea and Coastline

  • Strikes on Russian oil refineries have a significant impact on Russia’s ability to conduct warfare. Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, Commander of U.S. Forces Europe in 2014-17, stated this during the 16th annual Kyiv Security Forum. “Of course, attacks on oil refineries have a significant impact. Russia is less able to pay for this war, and it also deprives it of the necessary fuel to continue hostilities. I would recommend ignoring the calls for an end to such attacks.”
The Lieutenant General emphasized that sanctions against Russia need to be strengthened. He also added that 2024 will be the year of industrial competition. “Ukraine and the West should win this competition. I am talking about of course building up ammunition supplies, but also moving forward maintenance capabilities so that the Ukrainian soldiers can fix forward equipment that is broken or damaged on site, as well as increasing their ammunition stocks.”
According to Hodges, Ukraine should put pressure on Russian logistics, particularly in Crimea, to make the peninsula unusable for Russian troops. “I would not expect a dramatic drop in Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. The job of (new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine) Syrskyi will be to stabilize the situation on the front line, but industrial competition will play a role here, while the Ukrainian army needs new units to ensure rotation”.
    ----------
Ben Hodges is a retired United States Army officer, who became commander of United States Army Europe in November 2014, and held that position for three years until retiring from the United States Army in January 2018. He was most recently a Senior Advisor to Human Rights First, until summer 2023, and serves as NATO Senior Mentor for Logistics. Until recently was the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies, at the Centre for European Policy Analysis, specialising in NATO, the Transatlantic relationship and international security.

I’m a little person. I’m moderately educated. I’m old. I have lived all over the world. I have seen the Cuban missile crisis, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the folding of the Soviet Union and my brain is screaming “Stop taking this conflict lightly!”
All elements are in place for the perfect storm.
Do people remember what democracy is and how much it cost?

They probably invested money in Russian oil production and now they trying to protect it. The same was going on during WW2. American investors were protesting bombing of certain German factories for the same reasons.

The only rationale for western sources discouraging attacks on Russian oil refineries is a potential increase in gas prices in the U.S. during an election year. Losing the white house is worse than a several months ban on those attacks.

Concur. I'll reluctantly vote for Trump, but I hope he'll be smarter than his supporters are and make opening the American energy sector a primary objective. If Pedophi|e Joey had done so early on, Putin would have been beggared & destabilized last year.
Furthermore, Pedophi|e Joey could actually, I dunno, *LEAD* by rallying conservatives to support Ukraine & facing down the handful of Froot Loops like MTG who are believing Kremlin claims. It's pretty hard to pretend Russia should be anything but an international pariah once one becomes even moderately familiar with the vast assortment of crimes against humanity being conducted in the ethnic cleansing of Ukraine.
EDIT - I'm generally shadow banned by YewTub

General Hodges' willingness to participate in key organizations, as well as accept interviews readily accessible to the public is much appreciated. Regarding the Suwalki gap, why there is so much fretting over a ~60 mile section of border between Poland and Lithuania? That it is the shortest path between Belarus and Kaliningrad could pose as much a liability for Russia as an asset. NATO has 'boatloads' of defensive assets nearby, likely making it the WORST place for Russia to attack. If they did, NATO would declare 'open season' to invade Kaliningrad, sink all ships, and block use of the Baltic sea. Russia then must deal with a long, very narrow 'finger' of forces surrounded on 3 sides by NATO. That sounds like a nightmare for Russia.

Now think for a moment, if as you suggest 140m population is not enough to defend its territory, then how many would it take and to hold that territory?
As I already said though, Russia historically has been the graveyard for invading great powers.

@@americanpatriot4227 According to an old treaty from 1857 Denmark is obliged to give free passage to all ships sailing to and from the Baltic Sea without demanding polit or any other restrictions. Only if ships are sailing to or from a Danish port we can demand pilot. Prior to 1857 the Danish kings would make a fortune by blocking the Danish passage to the Baltic Sea and demanding ships to pay a toll to pass through. England and other countries forced Denmark to abolish the toll and the treaty from 1857 were signed.

There is a key phrase the general used; "political courage". This is key. Most politicians are cowards by nature (politically, I can't speak to their physical courage). Courage comes in the form of doing the right thing, even if it might mean the end of your political career. There are very very few people in government with "political courage."

We have a German counterpart to Ben Hodges - Ex general Erhard Bühler. He appears regularly in a Podcast and I feel the same intelligent, well reflected spirit when he is analysing things.
It worries me, to see the world getting crazy while this generation of experienced & clear minded individuals has been tetired. I fear that in many positions you will find now career-oriented guys who would not stand up to vocalize their thoughts and take responsibility if needed. Same with Politicians. No real Leadership - but fearing rising Oil prices prior to upcoming elections...

I found Hodges explanation of how helping push Russia out of Ukraine also helps solve the issues with both the Houthies and Hezbola (because they're funded and supported by Russia) to be very prescient. Especially when considering how closely China is watching to see whether they could pull off an invasion of Taiwan.

As always, on point and extremely informative, pulling from experience and time spent in the area. Studying the lay of the land and the resources available along with the people involved within the conflict on both sides. Bluntly reasonable ideas to resolve the conflict in a post cold War arena.
For those civilians who don't understand the rules of modern warfare, this is a good crib sheet to study. Lt General Ben Hodges has many videos in several venues to watch. Always on point.

How big a deficit do you want the US to have. It is now 35 trillion dollars and an accumulated debt of almost 100 trillion dollars. All the Wonder Weapons the West has sent to Ukraine have proven to be just as good or bad as any other weapon. Ben Hodges is just as bad an analyst as Petraeus.
