For all the people commenting Max Velocity instead of Max Altitude: Max Altitude is another blue card in the deck to trigger Drowned Secrets for more milling. I'd much rather take the chance and mill a couple more phoenixes or mill burn and have a more explosive play than have 2 damage with narcomoeba. This just might be a change in the deck's shell based on who thinks what is better. Edit: Since their are only two Max altitudes, I could definitely see a shell with Max Velocity, but it depends on either if you want more damage or more milling.
Yeah, more milling is the main reason for Velocity (that and our Phoenix already has haste, so Narcomoebia is the only creature we have that actually cares about getting haste).
I love how Seth almost won that first game against that 3rd deck and was so excited that he almost beat what seemed like a brutal matchup, and completely forgot that he milled virtually 0 payoffs and instead drew just about all of them into his hand... and STILL almost won! This deck seems strong...
I built this the moment i saw the original deck tech on twitter. This is the most fun ive had playing standard since SOI. I love the updates made to the mana base and will immediately do the same. Excellent video
I have been running this deck for a week and a half now and it is a ton of fun! I have gone for a little bit of a different build, and tried out cards like Stitcher's Supplier, and a side that consists of sleep and murmuring mystics. I do see a strong point in running with sulfur falls to cast the phoenix. Blink of an Eye, and Chart a course has been really good for me. Blink can deal with seal away and hieromancers, and other troublesome permanenets.
2x psychic corrosion in the side board may actually help with the back up to the back up plan. It will allow for you to mill them faster.. as fast as this deck churns cards. Might be a feasable answer without to many draw backs. Just my opinion.. and very open to feed back
That could be sweet. The question is what we'd cut. The control matchup is harder in game one (since we don't have any counters for Settle the Wreckage), but then does improve after sideboarding with Admiral's Orders and Negate.
Seth now that your’re splashing red ever consider Beacon Bolt instead of Cast Down? Also any thoughts on a side boarding plan that inserts Enigma Drakes and Cackling Drake to take advantage of all your self milled instants and sorcery’s in game two?
Or Seadch for Azcanra instead of vertebrae as it's a blue spell...triggers drowned and also eventually let's yiu dig for spells and gives you an idea of where your phoenixes and chills are so you know how hard to mill
Being 1U instead of one might be too slow. Also, emergency put x number of narcomebas/creeping chills back in the deck to be milled might be used in long matches. Edit: also, wand of vertibrae isn't a legend so you can have more out and discard more per turn.
The other big upside of Wand is it does occasionally save us from decking ourselves. Not sure if it came up in the video matches, but I'd had games with the deck where it does matter.
@@MTGGoldfish I did consider that after. I'm gonna test with 2 vertabrae and 2 search and again try 1 squee for grinder matches. I almost want to run Thought Erasurr and sabotage in the side but idk this is a bizarre but fun build.
The Boros Angels matchup is still rough but it's even better than it looks. The other half was never used in these games, but Dispersal is a maindeck answer that will almost always hit an angel and let you come through with your Arclights for one more turn. Seems sweet in a pinch
My favorite win with this deck was vs UW Control where he exiled my Phoenixes but I just rebuilt my library with Enhanced Surveillance (I was playing 1 copy) and milled him out :D
The list I was playing cut 2 Wands for 1 Azcanta, 1 Surveillance. Also notice Seth cut a land from the original deck to put in Chart a Course. I'm thinking about also cutting a land but putting 1 Wand back in.
Milling the island at 1:11:03 made you lose the 5-0, cause you would have been able to cast the second maximize altitude and given you lethal. Other than that you played that match really well
So for standard at least, on the deck tech screen where you have the bar of Lands/instants/etc. Cant you add the Rarity counter on that bar so people can see the "cost" in arena?
I think Seth didn't noticed, but in this deck, many times, the better is to try mill yourself in the upkeep. Also, I think a couple of Search For Azcanta would be nice in the build!
Try a Beacon Bolt for removal and up the red? It is 3 mana which is asking a lot but it will kill anything and lets you discard and you do not mind it being milled. the cast down needs a mission support
Really solid deck. SB needs to be tweaked to deal with that last match (as it looked pretty rough for you). On paper Archlight Phoenix seems good but in reality it is such a powerful card.
There’s a blue enchantment that let’s you look at the top card of your library and cast it if its an instant or sorcery. That would help with the bad draws and bad mills
I think the odds are the same either way (although casting Missing Briefing during our turn is important for casting three spells to get back Phoenix).
@@MTGGoldfish I might not have made myself very clear. If for example the card on top of your library is a phoenix, narc or a chill (unwanted) and the card below is a card you want to draw, you can upkeep the Briefing, mill the unwanted card and draw the wanted. Pretty sure there is logic to what I am saying X)
So personal thoughts after much time spent with the deck. A one of nexus of fate is so good. Also had to dump the tempest djinn island sideboard plan for a more stable mana base but I didnt run any izzet shocks due to No need for early red and life can be a high comaditiy vs some decks. Also in case you havent run across this yet the dispersal side of the split is the best counter to the rainbow lich decks.
Sure, a single Azcanta can outmill a single wand but you can have multiple wands in play, and shuffle your Narcs and Creeping chills back in with Wand too. It also costs 1 less so you can play more spells for a chance at greater mill. I could see it as a one or two of for its power but I think the costs of Azcanta make it less useful as a 4 of.
Azcanta can help you draw into a card you want, it can ramp you by flipping if necessary and it is also a blue spell for Drowned Secrets. Of course, I am still playing a couple Wands for the ability to shuffle stuff back into my library, just not the full 4.
@@andrewshewan4551 Yeah, I guess they were afraid of giving it any combo potential. It's a shame, I would have loved to make Standard G/B dredge with Creeping Chills and Gaea's Blessing had it not exiled.
Yessssss, there's never enough dredge in life. I hope to tune this deck, add some better cards and make it a tournament worthy deck. Also, no Stitcher's Suplier?
Hey Seth, what would you suggest in terms of decks to build on Arena? I know it's off topic but I'm a modern player so I'm not too familiar with standard. And decks like Merfolk, Life Gain, and some others I can easily beat with the pre cons so it's discouraging to want to spend my wildcards on something that will be on the same level as the starters. What would you suggest?
Back in the old days of spider spawnings, lab maniacs, and séance, people would call decks like these self-mill decks. Now everyone says dredge whether or not dredge is involved. Those decks had too many win conditions anyways (lab maniac and séance with an empty library were overkill with so many spiders that could either beat down or play defense). I think your side boarding was pretty spot on for what this deck needed.
I feel okay calling this one Dredge since it plays some many Modern Dredge cards (like Narcomoebia and Creeping Chill). I'm pretty happy with how the sideboard turned out in general.
Wow. Match 1 Game 2 Seth went through 26 cards and only 1 of them was something he wanted. This happening while running 12 mill targets is about the worst luck ever Edit: and then there was Game 3...
Change the lands that splash red to ones that splash green, making it sultai with phoenixes. Then use stichers assistant and the 3/1 golgari creature for your early curve, so you can botch less with milling lands. And maybe use the enchantment that doubles the surveil triggers, instead of the one that randomly mills you, as well.
I feel like the plan against lifegain angels should be to convert completely to mill/sweepers. That's only a difference of 8 cards or so to make it a viable option I feel.
I think that Creeping Chill is already turning out to be pretty busted. You essentially start your game with a life total of 32 against your opponent's 8. In the context of shocks and fetches, your opponent can be at an effective 5 or lower. The issue isn't that you have Helix's in the deck, its that you don't have to pay to cast them, and they inevitably get cast when you mill your deck. I'm not experienced enough to determine if this is going to be a problem or not, but I suspect it will be, likely in Standard not Modern. I could see this being an RnD oops that Wizards backsteps on.
It's an enchantment - Drowned Secrets is only there because it synergizes with all the spells we cast. There's already Secrets and Wand of Vertebrae (which can have multiples on the board, unlike Azcanta), having more non-instants would gum up the deck too much and make it inconsistent.
Why not use the jump-start card that gives haste and +1/+1 instead of the one that gives flying? That way you can give a narcomoeba haste so it can join in the fight, or give a phoenix extra power on a hasty attack?
While the haste card is probably slightly better in a vacuum, the fact that the flying one mill with Drowned Secrets makes it a tiny bit better in our deck imo.
The issue is that red mana is way less reliable than blue mana - we will always have blue for Altitude, and having 2 more damage on a turn isn't as important as guaranteeing that third spell for a 3/2. Also we want blue spells for Drowned Secrets.
first time you get phoenix back, you could have gottem both back by not chosing altittude with briefing and instead discarding phoenix in hand to jump start it.
One time that you could have done better though it wouldnt have really mattered, is in the secound game against the izzet countrol you could just mission briefing the creeping chill for lethal...
Maybe rely on our red splash like a main deck color, throw off our mill plan and make our curve less efficient to do a single point of extra damage with our 1/1s. How could this possibly fail? Sorry for the toxicity but I feel as if its necessary to show the costs inherent in changing just 2 spells in a deck.

Yeah, more milling is the main reason for Velocity (that and our Phoenix already has haste, so Narcomoebia is the only creature we have that actually cares about getting haste).
I think a 2-2 split between both sounds ok, mainly because of the jump-start, to help fixing weird hands
But both Pheonix and Narco already have flying too so that point is kind moot
