Hello I am a painting contractor and we use caulk all the time and this exact kind you don’t really need to cover the caulk once it’s open it will dry a little mostly just what is in the top of the tube where it comes out but the rest of the caulk in the bottom will be fine 😊 I would recommend a caulk gun tho because once your caulk get lower in there you will have a hard time getting it out plus a caulk gun has a small sharp bayonet to poke through the top when the caulk dries at the top so it kinda dries at the top and seals it self off so the rest of the caulk at the bottom is good 👍 just wanted to let you know

That's so cool, using the Caulking stuff instead of the expensive Liquitex Modelling Paste. You could also use liquid polymer clay like Translucent Liquid Fimo clay or Translucent Liquid Sculpey. They're very good for squeezing into silicone moulds, and then you just bake them in the oven at 130 degrees Celsius for 25 - 30 minutes. You can glue the mouldings made of liquid polymer clay onto anything you like as long as you use good glue, and then you can paint over them.

Thank you so much for your video!!! I've had my moulds for so long and have never been able to get to grips with them. But with your tips it will work!! I'm so happy!!! People often think so complicated, but you just need a little more patience and good, but also practical ideas. I've been looking for good tips for ages and now I've finally found them!!!! Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!!! Greetings from Vienna, Austria (Europe)!!

Very LIGHTLY dust the silicone molds with a very thin layer of CORNSTARCH before you use the air dry clay. Use a cheap fluffy make-up eye shadow blending brush to apply the cornstarch. Then once it is dusted, remove any excess cornstarch by tipping over the mold and lightly tapping or even just blowing on the mold so that there is no extra within the cavity. You can then insert little balls of the air dray clay in the mold and press it firmly down into all the nooks and crannies. Just keep adding clay until it is full and tightly packed. A "sculpting ball tool" will help you really get all the details of the mold. To De-Mold the air dry clay, lightly press in on the sides of the mold, go 360 degrees around the edge.....you will see a tiny bit of separation of the clay from around the edges. Once it is separated from the edges, then you can tip in over and gently ease out your air dry clay. Hope this helps! ~ Christy ~ Here's a link to the tool I mentioned above:

With the thicker moulds, do you think it’s possible to use a hairdryer over the moulds to speed up drying time? Like leave the moulds for 24 hours then use a blow dryer to help get the thicker areas to dry? Just wondering. The great thing about using air dry/ paper clay is that the object can be removed right away and can be glued onto a tin, a jar, wood, etc when wet. The down side is that they dry hard so have to be used right away if you’re adding to a round object.

    • @ziggy13mity1

It sounds like you need to put more material and really push it in, push then scrap, then add more and repeat. You would be surprised how much can fit into the deeper moulds. Also make sure you give it several days to dry cause if not it can distort slightly too when pulling out.

I have used ink, and pre coloring will work too just use reinkers or very little paint because you can change the product and then it won’t cure right. If you want to paint, You would also need to lightly scuff the surface and prep with gesso then you can paint with any acrylics. Hope all this helps.

I just went nuts buying a large glue gun and extra glue sticks thinking that would make the perfect bendable/paintable mold. Here I am learning again. One drawback I see with caulk would be the wait time for the thicker molds, with hot glue they are solid in a few minutes - BUT the hot glue doesn't grab the details of the mold like the caulk does. All in all clay is best of course, but I do need them to be bendable sometimes and this seems to be the best option yet. I wonder if you can pop the mold in the oven at a low temp or would it make the caulk shrink more? (will google that) What I didn't see here was actually painting the molds like I would need to, maybe you have a video for that? The hot glue is terrible for painting although I was about to try a thin coat of mod podge or clear coat on it beforehand so it would grab the paint better. Always learning so thank you for your video!! 😍

So it doesn’t stick into the molds and most molds will be way thicker than than if you are using caulk to seal something. That drying time is for a very thin smeared layer sticking to a seam rather than something you are trying to keep intact and remove. I hope this helps. TFW - Misty

The molds are cute! I just wanted to share with all the artsy fartsy people that you can also make your own molds out of of the 100% silicone caulking combined with Naptha or mineral spirits. I learned this years ago from another YT’er. His channel is still up. Rather than try to explain the process; you can look up GeoSubstainable on mold making. I had a very cute rubber door mat that had some wicked looking scrolls with a Harley Emblem. Once I made the mold I filled it with QuickCretee. I know have cool stepping pads that lead out to our workshop.
I did have to build a cardboard box to fit around the rubber door mat as I wanted my stepping stones to be 6” thick.
I thought I’d share as sometimes we have an item we really like and would like to replicate it in whatever material.
I’ve actually used Dawn soap as a release agent and have used bondo to fill molds. It has a 10 minute working time so I mix small batches.

Oh wow, great idea. Thanks for sharing, will check out his channel. You do some serious molding, but I bet they are pretty. TFW Misty

Just found your channel & subscribed. Loved your instructions, very clear but hate the background music, would be better without it. Don't know why everyone thinks they need it. Thanks.

I was having a hard time using air dry clay in some intricate molds so I will definitely be trying this method. Have u tried using cornstarch before adding the caulking ? I’m wondering if it’d make a difference..

You need tell viewers. The fast and dry silicone smells horrible and do this outside if u have asthma or breathing issues.

I never even noticed it, her video is that good. Normally, the music drives me nuts.

This is a nice video but I find working with this medium is extremely difficult. I work with polymer clay and had a couple of very shallow molds I thought would be perfect for this medium. Boy was I wrong. Not only is it difficult to work with it is also very messy. I wouldn't have wasted money on it if I knew just how messy and difficult it was to work with. I'll pay the price for polymer clay any day over this garbage.

Be kind. No need to call this material garbage. It obviously works for her.
