I love that they made Ellie hit the flashlight in the same way they made the player hit the controller to toggle the flashlight. It’s the small things that makes me appreciate this show even more!
I never hit the controller, I just shook it. Interesting!
Also when Riley shines the flashlight in her eyes, she says "Ow" like how the characters squint in TLOU and Uncharted if you shine the light in their face.

In the game she probably did it, but they never say. In the series, however, she kinda confirmed it when she said "He wasn't my first" after killing Bryan 😥

They adapted Left Behind perfectly. Storm and Bella were incredible and this episode was another 10/10 for me. Best video game adaptation ever in my opinion. Extremely sad we only have 2 episodes left.
They skipped the entirety of Ellie getting supplies from a crashed helicopter. She just found thred upstairs.

@@Babylauncher3000 That part of the game was never as important so that’s likely why they skipped it and decided to focus more on Ellie and Riley/Ellie’s backstory which is what Left Behind was more about than anything. They were also still able to show how much Ellie cares about Joel in the few scenes they had this episode but made it much more condensed and palatable for a TV show. Those few scenes carried the same emotional weight as the game as well so I don’t see how you could complain about that.
They didn’t show the infected chasing them the show been ok so far they’ve been cutting out a lot of scenes and toned down the violence hopefully when joe is looking for ellie he goes into beast mode
@@Cloudcity20 I'm just sayin you shouldn't call an adaptation of DLC "perfect" if it cuts 40% of the DLC. What they did adapt they did adapt perfectly but the DLC itself was definitely streamlined.
Huge shoutout to Storm Reid’s portrayal (Euphoria, The Invisible Man, Suicide Squad) as Riley because her performance is what stole the episode for me!
For those that played the DLC, she at least got the chance to ride the carousel. 😢

It’s safe to assume they probably had a book that had the fatalities. In 2003 those guides where gold to a fighting gamer. She knew the Baraka fatality combination. Only possible with a book they found.

i actually listened to the podcast for this episode and they said the memory of what riley said stayed with ellie. whether you have 2 minutes or 2 days you don't give up because you love each other and joel is the person she loves the most right now so she will fight to the bitter end for him

I actually buy that Riley knew how to do the fatality for a simple detail: they were in an Arcade. The one I used to play had a whole sheet of codes for each game with combos and fatalities. So much memories.
I was going to say I’ve played on some arcade tables hat had all the Fatalities listed where all the buttons are. But they weren’t looking down so yeah I’ve with Roshi, my suspension of disbelief couldn’t accept that 😂

One thing they changed from the game was that Ellie already knew about Marlene prior to Riley mentioning she was the one who recruited her. In left behind the game Marlenes name was already known to Fedra and the soldiers
What they didn't know was that Ellies mom was a Firefly so when she died she put Ellie in the Boston QZ as an orphan so they wouldn't kill her
LOVE THIS COMMENT! I’m sure many people didn’t catch that which sucks but I definitely noticed those changes as well.
This episode was heartbreaking but necessary to understand more of Ellie's perspective and behavior. Bella killed it as always and Storm did a fantastic job too, she has been amazing on Euphoria and did not disappoint here
Considering she found a pun book, she may have also found a cheat book / guide for Mortal Kombat, I used to collect them from gaming magazines in the early 2000s.
This, plus the fact that immediately after doing it she admitted that she had been there a few times and played it before to practice before she brought Ellie there.

@@YaBoyRoshi Cheat books/guides from gaming magazines in 2001 contained all kinds of games and consoles, from NES to N64, Sega to PS1. They would just contain lists of thousands of cheat codes/ secrets and little tips from all kinds of games. We would trade them around in school all the time before the internet was common.

In the podcast Craig and Neil explained that since they loved MK so much and the was no internet in ‘03 they collected these gaming magazines with move sets for MK and “how to beat” certain levels from other games that the girls most likely memorized even though they probably would never play!

Between the heartwarming cute moments showcasing Ellie and Riley finally being able to act like kids again for once, if only for a little while...... only to rip it all away again for the seventh time in a row (damn you, show), this never ending River of tragedy that follows Ellie is emblematic of not just the shows central theme but why Ellie continues to fight, to carry on.
It showcases her and Riley on opposite sides of an ideological, real and tribalistic conflict before they lay down their arms and come together to just be close for a little while because they're each others purpose in this moment; a fascinating parallel to the Bill and Frank love story and why it matters greatly when Ellie continues to lose and lose. And now that she does have someone who looks after her, who she can depend on, who matters to them, she’ll be damned if she loses that connection again.
For Riley’s sake and everyone else who died, Ellie will finish this journey……even if it kills her.

Lmao the MK fatality stuff was funny. In the podcast the showrunners talked about how at the time the outbreak happened video game magazines were widely popular so they imagined they would have found and collected those magazines which is how you got guides and other info.
Not sure if they'd have arcade cabinet codes but those Cheat Code books that came out yearly were huge back then too, could also explain it.
@@TherapyGel yeah I'm just going off of the official podcast because they were asked how the fuck they'd know the finishers and they said clearly Ellie/they have an interest in video games so they would have collected as much about them as possible to read and know more. So in their minds they just had a book that had finishers in them and memorized the characters the liked.

You were all talking to each other but Riley mentioned that she’s played the game multiple times since she’s been staying there which explains how she knew how to do a fatality and the reason why the “clicker” took so long was because it’s not a clicker, it’s a stalker and they don’t just attack you they sneak around you, hide and plan their attack

There was a GameStop in the mall if you look carefully. Maybe she found a game magazine/guide that shows her how to do the fatality. So don't fret too much on that detail. Improbable but not impossible.
Edit: Just listened to the official podcast and the creator said they thought a lot about it too. They said Ellie and Riley were obsessed with the game and would collect anything related to it, including magazine/guide about the game. They would have already memorized the fatality moves but they just could never play the game until this day.

About Riley knowing the fatality for Mortal Kombat. It's very much possible.
It looks like they were fans of the game even before. They had a poster. So it's very much possible they or more importantly, Riley could have found a game magazine where the character's fatalities are listed. She stayed in the mall for some time, so she has time to practice as well.
The infection started in 2003 in the show. So those 90s games magazines, like the comics, probably survived as well.

As a child of the 90s I had tons of gaming magazines and strategy guides that showed the moves. I like to imagine Reilly had one of those guides growing up. Ellie did mention having a friend that knew everything about the game.
The first fatality I learned when I was 3 years old was mileenas fatal they showed here. It’s just “hold high kick for 2 seconds” my cousin showed it to me haha so I could believe it if they weren’t in an apocalypse

This episode, just like the Left Behind DLC, is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. When Ellie and Riley are having the time of their lives playing around the mall and especially the arcade I felt absolutely elated. I especially loved how this was also a first date between them, even though they didn’t really know it was a date. And then when they finally kissed I couldn’t help but hold my heart because I thought it would burst from pure joy.
And after they both get bit I felt my heart break even harder than in the game. On the “Inside The Episode” after the show they talked about how even though Ellie felt absolutely defeated she still wants to savor every second of time that she has with the ones she loves. And it shows when she is stitching Joel up and the Left Behind theme is playing.
in the 3rd ep, ellie talks about riley knowing everything there was to know about the game, the poster in the room is rileys, no internet, but game guides would have been plentiful
In the post-show podcast, they explain that Riley and Ellie learned the fatalities by finding old gaming magazines. Basically, they learned about MK2, thought it was dope, and would pick up anything they found that was related to it. I think even the creators knew that's kind of a hand-wavy explanation to justify having the cool fatality in the show but it does the job.

What I liked about episode seven is that they adapted this from the first game’s downloadable content Left Behind because this explored Ellie’s backstory and we get to see her time meeting and spending time with her friend Riley moments before Riley had succumbed to the infection. Fun fact, Storm Reid, who played Riley in episode seven, also stars in the teen drama TV series Euphoria with Zendaya.

She could easily know the MK moves list. She got Ellie the pun book right? Well, she was in a book store, and what else was popular at the time? Strategy Guides. She could have found an MK 2 Guide at Barnes and Nobel. There's also a chance she got it where she got the poster. That MK poster is from an EGM magazine. That magazine would have had the moves list and all known Fatalities at the time. Hell if it's the issue I'm thinking of, EGM even came out with a pamplet that had all of that in it, as well as how to do Juggle combos, and I think a guide on who was weak/strongest against everyone else. So there's logical ways to have found out the Fatalities.
This could very well explain it. I remember doing that around 2003 instead of just flat out buying the strategy guide. Go to the bookstore, read it, and retain information until you got back.

They had instructions for MK2 back then cause I had the strategy guide and still have it where it tells you all the moves. They had strategy guides going back to FF7 in 1997 and before as the one I had is dated for 1993...

Cheat codes and secret moves used to be in physical magazines you know, and those are still laying around. And they collect those things.

I think Riley knowing the combos and fatalities was an early hint of just how long she’d actually been in that mall. She told Ellie she’d just found it, but had been there long enough to figure out how to play. That doesn’t answer the question of why she didn’t do a full sweep of the mall in all that time, but it’s the best I got lol

Before having the means to get consoles or playing PC games, I got into gaming and anime magazines, those gaming ones had the fatality list, Riley and Ellie, if she had the poster, that means she had access to old magazines covering the game or maybe the fatality list is on the side of the arcade, there are tons of ways people knew about this, it is a 1993 game.

In the bts clip, Druckman mentioned they had the MKII guide. Would have been better if they showed it because even with a guide the MK games had ridiculous inputs.
