Also, fun fact: Alan was marketed as "Ken's buddy" and "all of Ken's clothes fit Alan". He was discontinued because a lot of parents thought Alan and Ken were gay together. And Magic Earring Ken was discontinued because that's not an earring hanging around his neck, the people designing him in the early 90's referenced how people dressed in night clubs, thinking what's cool and hip, not knowing a lot of gay people attended night clubs. That's a cock-ring. Gay men loved Magic Earring Ken. Angry parents and Mattel took notice.

I hope if Mattel push for more movies of their toys next I wanna see is He-man. Make it like this, stupid as hell, make jokes to trigger the hardcore old he-man fans and get John Cena to play as he-man.
Context on triggering old fans: old he-man fans love the classic 80s look to death. They despise the newer stuff and more these are dudes in their avg 50s+. Same thing they collect the living hell out of the exact same looking he-man with little to almost no changes.
I want a movie where he-man ends up in the real world and try to find fellow “warriors” like him. Then have bunch of angry dudes getting pissed on Adam/he-man recruit various type of guys or even women instead of the typical 80s action star looking Arnold, van damme, Sylvester looking ppl.
What’s the message in the end of film? Except change and let ppl be who they are or anyone can be a hero. Going back to the old fans angry on new he-man designs they hate it BUT if they have kids and see he kids loving the new he-man figures, how they look and various characters then why continue to get mad? He-man lives on through the generation wifh new ppl collecting him, calling out his signature moves and yell the iconic “I have the power!” And make up new stories for the masters of he universe toy line.

I thought the Ken story was so good - he was created to be an accessory to Barbie. Growing up, all the Kens were ignored unless us girls needed him briefly for a storyline. He wasn’t allowed to drive the cars, the boats, or live in the house. Translating that into the movie made me laugh at the accuracy while feeling bad for the boys. @pillowvibes Рік тому

@@HydroniteTBbut, isn’t that the reality? pretty girls thinking they’re ugly? it’s not just conventionally unattractive people who get insecure. the whole idea was that no matter how “perfect” you look, namely as a woman, there’s always a lingering feeling of inadequacy.
the line at the end of America’s speech sums it up entirely “if just a doll portraying a woman is feeling like this [not good enough], then I don’t even know”. dolls don’t have natural features or conventional flaws, so the message wouldn’t really be as strong if they went with someone less conventionally attractive. it doesn’t make sense for her to be insecure in her looks, and that’s the point.

in case anyone is wondering about the discontinued barbies:
    - Midge, because it felt really inappropriate to be introducing the concept of making children to children, also many parents thought this was pro-teen preganacy
    - Allen, because it felt redundant to have another Ken.
    - Grow-up Skipper was suppose to introduce the concept of puberty but that just came off as gross
    - Video Barbie wasnt bad because of the tiny screen, its because it also had a camera and it lead to concerns of someone using it to create CP.
    - Sugar Daddy Ken was meant to be for adult Barbie collectors. they tried to circumvent it with the pun of Sugar being the name of the dog but parents were still mad
    - Magic earring ken was suppose to be a homosexual ken, but this was the 90s where people were still very homophobic. also everyone kept thinking his ring was a cock ring for some reason.
also yes there was the actual Barbie dog that eats its own poop and that baby sitter barbie that took babies surfing, i have vivid memories as a child of that commercial.

For myself, one of the greatest moments was towards the end, when everyone was sadly waving goodbye to Barbie. Compared that to the first time she left: It was a new Barbie adventure! Everyone was there and cheering and there were posters and joy and smiles! They knew she was going to have a great time and come back and share it with all of them.
But not at the end of the movie. They knew she wasn't coming back. This wasn't a trip or a new adventure. This was the final farewell, full of bittersweet emotion and the sense of inevitability that comes with permanent loss.

The Barbie lore is so serious and it adds so much to experiencing this film, especially it being written by Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach.
If you haven't seen a film by them (Lady Bird, Frances Ha, Little Women, Marriage Story, etc.)
They both made a hilarious satire for gender roles using Barbie and also Ken for men and women.
Greta and Noah never make surface level films, they'll alway make something with some depth to it.
I'm so glad you all enjoyed it.

People who say this movie is about hating men or anti-motherhood either didn't get it or have not seen it. It's a commentary about how women are viewed as less than in the real world. But the message is not that women are superior to men, it's that we're equal and each have a purpose. Barbie doesn't just exist to look good and Ken doesn't just exist to be by Barbie's side. They are both worthy of happiness and love as individuals.
And America Ferrera's character specifically says that it's okay to "just" be a mum. You don't have to have a career or choose between a career and being a mum. Plus the pregnant Barbie was a real Barbie that was discontinued because people thought the idea of it was funny seeing as she didn't have a vagina.
Speaking of, the ending with her going to the gynecologist, now that she has a vagina, is actually genius.
Margot Robbie is fabulous as always but Ryan Gosling just took it to another level!
