in case anyone is wondering about the discontinued barbies: - Midge, because it felt really inappropriate to be introducing the concept of making children to children, also many parents thought this was pro-teen preganacy - Allen, because it felt redundant to have another Ken. - Grow-up Skipper was suppose to introduce the concept of puberty but that just came off as gross - Video Barbie wasnt bad because of the tiny screen, its because it also had a camera and it lead to concerns of someone using it to create CP. - Sugar Daddy Ken was meant to be for adult Barbie collectors. they tried to circumvent it with the pun of Sugar being the name of the dog but parents were still mad - Magic earring ken was suppose to be a homosexual ken, but this was the 90s where people were still very homophobic. also everyone kept thinking his ring was a cock ring for some reason. also yes there was the actual Barbie dog that eats its own poop and that baby sitter barbie that took babies surfing, i have vivid memories as a child of that commercial.
The funny thing about magic earring ken was he was totally an accident. Like they just wanted to introduce a night club wardrobe for ken, so they added the ring necklace cause they saw that it was in style with clubbing guys back then, not realizing that it was actually a c*ck ring 😭😭😭
Yo this movie was unironically my favorite movie in years. The themes around the toxicity inherent in the expectations placed on both men and women, the pitfalls and evils of patriarchy and capitalism, and the themes of parenting. And yeah, it’s funny as shit too. Lot of awards coming down the pipeline for this one.
Not one single actual feminist on earth has a problem with motherhood, that’s almost exclusively a reactionary right-wing trope. This movie took me off guard when I first watched it because I expected just a fun time, but left that theatre in tears lmaooo. The ending really pulled at my heartstring and I made sure to call my mom afterwards
Alan was actually created to be Ken’s best friend. However, people assumed that they were _more_ than just friends because of sharing clothes thing. Alan is actually married to Midge. Which I’m pretty sure the reason pregnant Midge was recalled was because she didn’t have a wedding ring. So parents assumed that she had a child out of wedlock.
I was not at all expecting yall to watch these but I'm SO excited that you did. And yall on theme! 💗 And in terms of how insanely sucessful this movie was...it was truly insane. My best friend and I are botb movie people, so we go every week for $5 Tuesdays. I cant remember the last time I've been to a movie with 15 people in it, let alone PACKED. And EVERYBODY was dressed in pink, even the guys. It felt like 2004. And it stayed like that...for weeks. Anyway, yall videos always make my day. Love yall!
The Barbie lore is so serious and it adds so much to experiencing this film, especially it being written by Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach. If you haven't seen a film by them (Lady Bird, Frances Ha, Little Women, Marriage Story, etc.) They both made a hilarious satire for gender roles using Barbie and also Ken for men and women. Greta and Noah never make surface level films, they'll alway make something with some depth to it. I'm so glad you all enjoyed it.
For myself, one of the greatest moments was towards the end, when everyone was sadly waving goodbye to Barbie. Compared that to the first time she left: It was a new Barbie adventure! Everyone was there and cheering and there were posters and joy and smiles! They knew she was going to have a great time and come back and share it with all of them. But not at the end of the movie. They knew she wasn't coming back. This wasn't a trip or a new adventure. This was the final farewell, full of bittersweet emotion and the sense of inevitability that comes with permanent loss.
I remember playing with the dolls and watching the various movies and shows with my little sis. It was fun, but I had to do that stuff in secret cause my dad would beat my ass for doing anything remotely 'girly'💀
"They tryna raise the sales on Ken dolls" Mattel didn't even give a flying shite whatever Greta wanted to do with the movie, it was genuinely that scene where Mattel said they don't care about him 😭😭 glad Greta did something
No cap, giving young girls women dolls with things that they can do- cuz that's what they're gonna grow up to be, was always a more intellectually sound idea than teaching girl babies that babies are toys with baby dolls.
fun fact about the i'm just ken song, the composer wrote the song as a joke then send it to greta, she liked it so much that she thought of putting it in the movie so she talked about with ryan gosling who practiced the song and he did it way better than the composer expected.
47:12 I actually know exactly what lupa mentioned. I watched it awhile before the movie came out so when I saw the movie in theaters, I actually got excited when the discontinued dolls came up
Love that y’all enjoyed it! I think this is a hilarious and powerful movie, and while not everyone has to love it, I’ve been disappointed in how deeply some reactors have misunderstood it (like not enjoying it because it’s too adult for a kids movie…when it’s not a kids movie). It’s at the very least a fun time and very thoughtfully made film
People who say this movie is about hating men or anti-motherhood either didn't get it or have not seen it. It's a commentary about how women are viewed as less than in the real world. But the message is not that women are superior to men, it's that we're equal and each have a purpose. Barbie doesn't just exist to look good and Ken doesn't just exist to be by Barbie's side. They are both worthy of happiness and love as individuals. And America Ferrera's character specifically says that it's okay to "just" be a mum. You don't have to have a career or choose between a career and being a mum. Plus the pregnant Barbie was a real Barbie that was discontinued because people thought the idea of it was funny seeing as she didn't have a vagina. Speaking of, the ending with her going to the gynecologist, now that she has a vagina, is actually genius. Margot Robbie is fabulous as always but Ryan Gosling just took it to another level!
Hearing Lupa talk about the Toys That Made Us from Netflix brings me joy. I don’t hear anyone talk about it. Much like him I’m a male with random knowledge of Barbie just because I do.

I’ve watched the movie a few times and listened to podcast reviews, and none of them caught that Barbie was wearing blue the morning after the party! I didn’t even notice it! Great catch!
The montage of all the woman, (that Barbie sees at the end) is from the crew of the BARBIE film. It's the women in their lives: mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, children. It was a gift to the crew from director Greta Gerwig. Very sweet.
Even with all the overwhelming praise it got opening weekend I had no idea what to expect going in to see Barbie. And yet I haven’t laughed at a comedy this hard that wasn’t a Jackass movie in almost a decade!! There were moments I couldn’t breathe because I was laughing so hard. If this movie is not nominated for a ton of Oscars at the upcoming Academy Awards it proves they truly don’t like comedies. Also I NEED to see a duet of I’m Just Ken and Peaches from The Super Mario Bros movie at the Oscars!
What I love about this movie is that the old woman was played by the actual barbie so the woman who made barbie that's her daughter and she played her own mom
Found myself two of the hard-to-find dolls and pricey three-piece fashion set from this film throughout the weekend. Mattel NEEDS to give us more of the characters from this film as dolls. I want my Michael Cera (Allan) & Alexandra Shipp, Nicolas Coughlan, and Ncuti Gatwa dolls of their characters from this film!!
On the real this movie really impressed with how layered the story is. The 4th wall breaking, the dialog and subtle shots at cancel culture and outdated mindsets regarding gender. Genius film. Hilarious, emotional, thought provoking, and entertaining.
I love that Lupa watches Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. Just caught a quick scene while the kiddos were watching and instantly got hooked. It's very funny for something I'm sure that was supposed to be a fluff cartoon.
When she’s sitting at the bus station looking around and then starts crying, when she says the old woman is so beautiful it’s literally so wholesome and makes me emotional every time. Like i tear up and want to cry, it’s just a beautiful scene. 😅 It’s just a scene that recognizes the hardships of life and the hard feelings that come with it, but it’s all just a part of life and in a way it’s beautiful, and seeing the old lady at the end just to realize she’s lived a long life probably will of hardships with it’s fair share of happy times. It just shows the beauty in life despite the worst times. I will say that that scene encompasses the entire movie’s theme in a couple seconds beautifully.

- Midge, because it felt really inappropriate to be introducing the concept of making children to children, also many parents thought this was pro-teen preganacy
- Allen, because it felt redundant to have another Ken.
- Grow-up Skipper was suppose to introduce the concept of puberty but that just came off as gross
- Video Barbie wasnt bad because of the tiny screen, its because it also had a camera and it lead to concerns of someone using it to create CP.
- Sugar Daddy Ken was meant to be for adult Barbie collectors. they tried to circumvent it with the pun of Sugar being the name of the dog but parents were still mad
- Magic earring ken was suppose to be a homosexual ken, but this was the 90s where people were still very homophobic. also everyone kept thinking his ring was a cock ring for some reason.
also yes there was the actual Barbie dog that eats its own poop and that baby sitter barbie that took babies surfing, i have vivid memories as a child of that commercial.
The funny thing about magic earring ken was he was totally an accident. Like they just wanted to introduce a night club wardrobe for ken, so they added the ring necklace cause they saw that it was in style with clubbing guys back then, not realizing that it was actually a c*ck ring 😭😭😭
Loved the smile on Sheera's face throughout this. Reminded me of my first time watching I just had a smile on my face the whole time
Finding out Lupa watches the Barbie show and knows all these Barbie facts was so wholesome lol great reaction guys
Supposedly, I saw a decent amount of women on r/feminism that didn't like the movie because it glorified motherhood.
@@thegreatfitzgerald2660what💀💀
@@thegreatfitzgerald2660nah those’re plants. Gotta be
Not one single actual feminist on earth has a problem with motherhood, that’s almost exclusively a reactionary right-wing trope. Kind of like how “dem dur immigrants is comin ter take are jerbs” and “dem dur gayz wanna make ur kidz gay” is mostly extreme right wing reactionaries tilting at windmills. They ain’t got enough real, actual problems to deal with, so they gotta create some. Don Quixote could never
They are persons, and as a person, they have their opinions but is not the true overall. I don't think it glorified motherhood, it shows how rude is. @@thegreatfitzgerald2660
Im pretty sure in this movie alan isnt "midges alan" as alan here seems disinterested with midge and with the barbies in general
And by disinterested i mean romantically not like. Friendly lol
As someone whose always been more of a monster high girlie but pink is like my life I left the theater feeling like I had a spiritual experience 😂🎉
I was not at all expecting yall to watch these but I'm SO excited that you did. And yall on theme! 💗
And in terms of how insanely sucessful this movie was...it was truly insane.
If you haven't seen a film by them (Lady Bird, Frances Ha, Little Women, Marriage Story, etc.)
They both made a hilarious satire for gender roles using Barbie and also Ken for men and women.
Lupa being in to Barbie is the most random and funniest thing. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just random 😂
40:44 her saying with such confidence, "Yeah, that is a beach off" as if she has seen it before 🤣🤣
LUPA KEEP THE BARBIE FACTS GOING👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
i saw a quote from Ryan Gosling saying that the Kens huddle together like penguins on the beach to stay warm haha
I never thought I’d be given a lot to think about after watching Barbie but here we are.
It was a really great experience seeing it with my Mom.
I remember playing with the dolls and watching the various movies and shows with my little sis. It was fun, but I had to do that stuff in secret cause my dad would beat my ass for doing anything remotely 'girly'💀
Talk about traumatic.
That 2001: A Space Odyssey reference at the beginning of the movie is actually genius 😂😂😂
The fact that Lupa knows so much about Barbie definitely elevated this video so much more lol
I loved that y’all enjoyed this as much as I did. Also, Lupa I salute your Barbie knowledge. 😂👏🏾
“Y’all support the WNBA and I’ll go buy a Ken doll” is wild 😂😂😂😂😂
Lupa with all his hidden barbie knowledge and roshi judging hella hard was hilarious
Lupa?
@@lucienolongerhuman8298 you right
fun fact about the i'm just ken song, the composer wrote the song as a joke then send it to greta, she liked it so much that she thought of putting it in the movie so she talked about with ryan gosling who practiced the song and he did it way better than the composer expected.
Mark Ronson! He is a legend
47:12 I actually know exactly what lupa mentioned. I watched it awhile before the movie came out so when I saw the movie in theaters, I actually got excited when the discontinued dolls came up
Lupa and his doll knowledge. 😂
The fact that every doll and outfit in this movie was real is so cool.
“Sugar’s Daddy Ken” was an adult collector doll I believe but it was cancelled after backlash, so it actually never came out.
I was holding back my thug tears during that montage scene when i watched it at the Cinema 😂
Lupa having barbie knowledge and just Roshi looking at him is so funny to me
Love that y’all enjoyed it!
Best theory I've read is that Beach Ken was obsessed with horses because the kid that plays with him in the Real World is a horse girl 😂😂
I can't believe Lupa absorbed all that Barbie lore just by osmosis.
"Looks like the shoe is on the other table which is turned" - Roshi😂😂😂😂😂
3:18 "the hair one" finally unlocked a barbie memory for me!! i had the color changing hair barbie, that was why it took me so long to cut the hair off lolll
Lupa's knowledge of Barbie lore is hilarious. 😂
Man, I have had a ROUGH day. Last thing I was expecting to see was a new roshi movie reaction. Seriously, thank you guys for the content you put out. Always manages to put a smile on my face.
*Insert appropriate comforting message*
Ruth aka Rhea Pearlman!! So good to see her in this! She’s a throwback
I'm so glad that y'all enjoyed that Two Wise Trees Podcast joke. I died the first time I heard it 😂😂
Lupa being a Life in the Dreamhouse stan, WE LOVE TO SEE THAT👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I’ve watched the movie a few times and listened to podcast reviews, and none of them caught that Barbie was wearing blue the morning after the party! I didn’t even notice it! Great catch!
Yes! Here come the Barbie reactions, love it. I enjoyed this movie more than i thought i would, good to see others feel the same 👍
The montage of all the woman, (that Barbie sees at the end) is from the crew of the BARBIE film. It's the women in their lives: mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, children. It was a gift to the crew from director Greta Gerwig. Very sweet.
My 10-year-old son binged Barbie: Life in the Dream House to prepare for seeing this with me and agrees that it is hilarious 😂
"Maybe it's Barbie and it's Ken."
The first time I heard that line, I knew it was the film's thesis line.
Lupa being an enlightened 21st century man, and everyone dunking on him for it 😅
this is the first reaction channel i saw where the dudes wear pink too which is very nice and in spirit.
What I love about this movie is that the old woman was played by the actual barbie so the woman who made barbie that's her daughter and she played her own mom
This was AMAZING. 😂
As always, Lupa’s laugh is SO contagious. Best thing ever! 😅
Great reaction, guys!
"Support your brethren" LOL 🤣🤣
Love the energy of this reaction!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Honestly he's right, the Barbie Dreamhouse show on Netflix is hilarious 👍
14:35 You can tell Margot was trying not to laugh that entire scene lmao
That's why NSync had the album "No Strings Attached" in honor of their Allan roots.
It’s just a scene that recognizes the hardships of life and the hard feelings that come with it, but it’s all just a part of life and in a way it’s beautiful, and seeing the old lady at the end just to realize she’s lived a long life probably will of hardships with it’s fair share of happy times. It just shows the beauty in life despite the worst times. I will say that that scene encompasses the entire movie’s theme in a couple seconds beautifully.
the best thing about this reaction is knowing lupa vibes with barbie is the best thing about this video.
Lupa is on point with the toys that made us. It's a really fun docuseries.
I've had 2 exes who played guitar and sing at me 😩😭 It's a canon event
Absolutely loved this movie and the fact that a good portion of men that watched this loved it means nature is healing
Ya'll had the best reaction lol it actually makes sense what they said in barbieland about the kens. The kens will have as much power as the women have in the real world. An eye for an eye, am I right ? lmao
Ha! For real
There’s a behind-the-scenes video where the director Greta Gerwig is cracking up and crying while laughing at Alan screaming on the beach. It’s hilarious!😂
Ryan Gosling was by far the best part of this movie.
He was great, but Margot was the real star. Nobody else could’ve played Barbie. I could think of multiple actors that could’ve played Ken
First time I watched your channel and really enjoyed this movie reaction. The Barbie movie is a bit of a litmus test for reaction channels at the moment. Some people really do not pass the vibe check. So I went in with low expectations and am so happy I clicked the video. Cause y'alls conversations throughout the movie were funny and insightful. Really enjoyed myself! Definitely gonna check out more of your stuff.
Lupa clearly studied Barbie-ology before this video 😂
Great reaction, I love noticing these types of vids cause ya’ll notice things I didn’t notice and this movie definitely was a good time. Def adding to my favorites 💯
