An absolute masterpiece of movie making. I remember going to see this here in the UK in 1972/3 with my then girlfriend who shortly became my wife. 52 years later here I am watching and enjoying it again. Sadly, my wife passed away 3 years ago or we would have been watching it together.
It's heartbreaking to loose a loved one who was part of ur life for decades...life sometimes gifts us, sometimes takes away cruelly... nothing we can do..Get along with life brother..
There's something so comforting about this movie for me. It takes me back to my early teens, going to bed and watching whatever movie was on late TV at the time. Never quite seeing the whole thing because I'd either catch it 20 mins in or fall asleep before the end. I'll be adding it to my bed time watch list. Thank you!
The best "on the road" thriller movie ever. In the early ‘70s making the film cost around 100k USD, mainly using a shoulder camera and quite limited Human Resources. In front of a low budget, it cashed billions at the box offices all over the planet, and likely beyond it. Have seen it countless times, since I was a teenager, and will pursue it in the years (a few, sadly) ahead
Dennis Weaver deserved an oscar for his performance. Though he had relatively few lines, he had to convey his emotions purely through his physical acting ability. Weaver and Spielberg created a very special work.
Absolutely Oscar winning. This was released in November 1971 so the 1972 Oscars had Gene Hackman win in the French Connection who he could easily have beaten. Weaver is so much more realistic in my view.
He wouldn't have qualified for Oscars due to this being, a made for television film. Though it was later given a cinema release. Spielberg's first cinema film was Sugarland express.
This movie is even more incredible when you realize Spielberg was only around 24 yrs old when he directed this. Sometimes when I drive the highway at night, I pretend the semi truck behind me is the Duel truck and I need to get away. Makes long trips more interesting.😄

I'm watching this again because I remember it being such a great film so many years ago. This has to be the mark of any great filmmaker... to be able to make a great movie out of very limited material: basically one car, one truck, one driver, and very little dialogue. Class.
They really didn't make 'em like that then! DUEL was unique. Spielberg himself was amazed they managed to shoot it so fast and it's the only film he's made that he still watches every year, from what he says.
Script written by Richard Matheson, based on a short story by Richard Matheson, inspired by something that happened to Richard Matheson. But Spielberg gets the credit for directing it, LOL. For saying 'action' and 'cut'. What a joke! Newsflash, Spielberg watches this 'Spielberg movie' every year because he is a RICHARD MATHESON fan, and this is a RICHARD MATHESON movie.
@@system-error I'm well aware of Matheson's ownership of the story and beyond your list, the fact that he's the one who shopped it around to the studios, got rejected for its format being "too different" and got it published as a short story in Playboy instead where the young Spielberg's secretary saw it and fatefully recommended it to her creative boss. What Spielberg marvels at specifically is the speed with which he filmed it rather than the story's power for which he's never denied the original author credit.
Those are all things anyone can learn in five minutes of Googling, I'm not impressed by your trivia. Do you seriously think he watches it every year just to marvel at the speed with which he shot it? LMAO give me a break. He watches it because it's an amazing Richard Matheson movie. I bet he doesn't watch 1944 every year! Or even every decade!

It was released in European and UK cinemas due to its success on American Television, any version you see with the Universal Pictures logo and those characteristic opening credits with stylised font, is the cinematic version, which included new scenes to pad it out to 90mins filmed a year after US broadcast on tv.
@TheMasterNo6 - the school bus and railway crossing scenes were added. They had to get another truck for the additional theatrical release footage as the original truck was destroyed in the TV movie.
In Steven's interview on this film Duel, he said he said the studio executives wanted 10 days only to shoot the film, he only exceeded by 2. So altogether he completed the film between 12/13 days.

We never actually see this sinister truck driver.

Is "Duel" the world's first eco thriller ? The Dennis Weaver character stuck behind the disgusting smoke belching monster, at the start and he says something about "pollution" under his breath. When he attempts to overtake the artic, the faceless driver turns out to be a homicidal maniac. Is Duel an allegory about the homicidal behaviour of the oil corporations ? They won't be happy until they've fried the planet, even if it means their own demise.
yep, simple is better. No CGI or AI, and very low budget. Yet it makes sense and people can relate. The film is a work of art, not a toy made on a production line.
A movie before my time but nevertheless a brilliant movie. I’m now 47 year and have watched this with both my 16 and 14 year olds who both understand the brilliance behind this movie
I love a movie that has you gripped from the very beginning -- and this movie is every bit as riveting today as it was the day it was released. It's a classic.

@@ScratchyBaws 1) You can see the truck driver is in the cab. 2) Look at the damage caused when the truck went over the edge, if you think anyone could survive that (apart from Clark Kent), you're seriously deluded.
@@ScratchyBaws The door being open as the truck goes over the edge spoils it a bit as that would've been because of the stunt driver jumping out just before it goes over. They may well have had a dummy sitting in the drivers seat for effect.
I see where the director of Jeepers Creepers 1 received inspiration for that suspenseful opening scene from...the rusty truck and horn, even the cinematography 🤔
There is something really cold and distant about this film -- it has a Kubrickian feel to it. One of Spielberg's very best films. I saw it on the telly when I was six, and I was blown away by it. I'm watching it in my 50s now, and if anything it's even more gripping.
Cold and distance isn't it that how life movies evolved in last 60 years. Genuinely good acting. Dennis Weaver quintessential movie. On par with Clint Eastwood

I've been looking for this movie . I remember watching it as a kid and when I tried looking it up all I found was Jeepers Creepers.
Thanks uploaded!!!
I've probably watched this 50 times growing up. Classic ❤
Spielbergs best movies are all about the man being chased. Duel, Jaws, Jurassic Park.
Superb!
trying to get away from all this psychological movie rubbish, and i found this, what a masterpiece
I know what you mean, but this is very much a psychological movie thriller...
This film is very psychological.
@@lh7325 sorry, wrong word,i meant to say about the modern supernatural movies
I love 70's and 80's movies 😀
Thank you so much for the upload 👏
The breakthrough of Steven Spielberg, an absolute masterpiece an after 53 years still pure suspense in its best form
spielberg was practically a gen z of his time when he made this masterpiece??!! holy cow 🤯
One of my all time favourites. Seen it at least 15 times.
You must live an exciting life 😅….
@@ThatsTheSpiritGodCast As exciting as it gets when you're living it from a wheelchair. Hope yours is as good as mine my friend. x
I've been looking for this movie for almost 20 years. I'm so happy i got this on my recommended!!! I always thought it was a red convertible mustang
I watched this many years ago, in 1984 was nine then and that truck was a nightmare xx big love from me in Essex England xx
Watched this a couple of times in the early 1980's as a kid and loved it, have since racked my brain for the title to enjoy it again as an older man. Thanks!
Exactly the same!
@@leebearfield1405 Duel?
大好きな映画なので観られてよかったです!ありがとうございました。
You're very welcome
これぞ本当の恐怖映画ですね。久しぶりに鑑賞できました。
This film is just one scream of rage, in your face, from beginning to end. I first saw it at 9 y/o and it still terrifies the crap out of me.
esta película cuando era niño, me daba miedo, me encanta y por fin la econtré michas gracias!!
This is the epitome of classic movie! Who remembers Dennis Weaver as McCloud? I started chewing matches because of him! I was 10!
Remembered as Inspector MacLeod
I remember when they filmed an episode in Sydney in 1979 of McCloud. I watched it and loved the series too. I was in my final year in high school in the city. Don't forget he was also in Gentle Ben.
Saw it in the 70s and loved it. Stuck in my head until today. A simple premise but brilliantly filmed and executed. A masterpiece of movie making. Thankyou for sharing 👌👍
When it comes to white knuckle action and tension , this great film remains a master piece . Steven Spielberg he's the man !
Films envoûtant, quand j'étais adolescent ce films m'a effrayé ! Aujourd'hui je reconnais que c'est un chef-d'oeuvre !
Excellent film. Cela faisait des années que je ne l'avais pas vu. Merci
it was on a black and white tv when i first watched this movie at the age of 10. i saw it a couple of times since then, and when i came across it here on retro on tape, i felt thrilled and watched it again, feeling just as excited as the first time. what a blast from the past. this gem is easily one of the best suspence thrillers, a classic in it genre.
About time they had Dennis Weavers car and the truck as a Scalextric set.
Excellent movie, thanks for recording it and uploading it to UA-cam, you are great. 😊
Havent seen this since being a kid, didnt realise how much it reminds me of Jaws. Spielberg has made some great films.
La première vue j'avais 15 ou 16 ans captivé jusqu'à la dernière seconde. Aujourd'hui 56ans je le revois avec la même passion. Tres beau film.
I still consider it Spielberg's best movie to date. Thanks fro sharing!
No Jaws
At the end he is alone in no where, lost his car,and his business. But his victory ✌️ makes him feel so happy.❤Thenks Mr Spielberg
Yes, the psychopath is dancing with happiness after finally killing a tricky victim.
Alone?.
The truck/lorry drivers door is open 1.25.17 before it drives fully over the edge so you never know do you who survived.
When I first saw this Dennis Weaver looked middle aged, but now he looks quite young.
I see where the director of Jeepers Creepers 1 received inspiration for that suspenseful opening scene from...the rusty truck and horn, even the cinematography 🤔
What a amazing movie 😍 now only seen this movie 👌🏻 brilliant 😮💥
Phenomenal movie
Direction at. It's best
Hardly any words
Yet the suspense
Dennis Weaver is legendary
There is something really cold and distant about this film -- it has a Kubrickian feel to it. One of Spielberg's very best films.
I saw it on the telly when I was six, and I was blown away by it. I'm watching it in my 50s now, and if anything it's even more gripping.
I totally get what you mean about it being cold and distant. The scene at Chuck's café best encapsulates this I think. Defintely some Kubrick vibes
Cold and distance isn't it that how life movies evolved in last 60 years. Genuinely good acting. Dennis Weaver quintessential movie. On par with Clint Eastwood
Defo in my top 10. Spielberg and Weaver just perfection. Watched as a kid , ohh how time passes you by. . . I'm just a big old kid now 😊
Thanks brother it's a timeless classic 🤙
That diner scene is so well written, you can feel all the tension and the score fits it perfectly too.
The camerawork in this movie is through the roof!
Watched this classic again for the first time in many years. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for this It brings back great memories watching this with my Dad in the 70's
Love this film. Lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched it. But, once Mr Mann had realised he was never going to get to his meeting on time, I don’t know why he didn’t just turn around and go home! 😊
Perhaps the truck would've chased him home. Then you would have a whole extra movie.
Because - after a certain point- Mann accepts the Duel.
really enjoyed watching that again...classic movie...thanks very much for that
What a movie, classic brings back so many childhood memories
good movie... I like these old American movies, greetings from Chile
Come on..how many Times i watch This Movie ? .....Genius
Retro on Tape,
Thanks for providing this horror-type movie set on the open road! Early Spielberg classic with good performance from Dennis 'McCloud' Weaver who finds himself in a fight to the death with a tanker truck with seemingly supernatural powers!
You're very welcome 👍
