Toyota Corolla sedan 2020 review

  • The Toyota Corolla hybrid sedan is a more practical choice over the fun-to-drive Corolla hatch, which suffered from a tiny boot and small back seat. Does the sedan correct those problems? Yes! And, as Tom finds out in today's video, the 2020 Corolla sedan is still a remarkably fun car to drive. But is it better than a Hyundai Elantra or a Honda Civic? Let's find out.
    What do you think of the new Corolla four-door? Do you think the Skoda Octavia outclasses it? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments.

    In today's episode, Tom checks out the new hybrid-powered Corolla sedan. Unlike the hatch, it has a usable boot.

      It’s so unfortunate, the hatch looks well proportioned to me, especially with the LED taillights. But the sedan just looks frumpy (sedans usually look better when elongated - think the Mazda3 Astina test car you drove) and those 90s looking halogen tail lights just look plain awful IMO. Totally agree that you need the sedan just to have a usable boot.

    Toyota builds durable, good quality cars with reasonable prices for purchasing and maintenance. This is exactly what we expect from a day-to-day car to make life easier, but not more expensive. Especially this Corolla, which is such a good all-rounder: practical, not too big or small, enough space, nice interior and exterior.

    Test drove a Accent Sport hybrid hatch yesterday....bought it 1/2 hour later. Quiet, comfortable and I don't know if people expect acceleration and speed of a Holden (Chev) SS but the responsiveness was more than enough for our nanny state in Victoria. The missing features from the mid and top spec weren't missed during my test drive which shows they would be nice but not really necessary. Steering is direct and to me well weighted for what this car is aimed at - urban daily drives. Suspension and ride quality is excellent - soaks up the uneven roads and provides an even and positive ride. The seats were extremely comfortable and would be no problem for longer trips. Forward vision is excellent, especially around the A pillar. I currently have a Holden SS ute and the A pillar vision is pathetic - the size of the blind spots is nerve racking. Rear vision is ok, but i could have done with a lower body line at the rear window (about 3 inches would be the sweet spot).
    I agree about the rear seat space and luggage area - but I really don't car because I won't be in the back and don't intend lugging everyone's belongings to any destination.
    If you are considering a commute car, you could do worse than test driving the Corolla - especially the hybrid.

    Why does the sedan lack LED taillights, dual zone AC and rear air vents unlike the ZR hatch. For a car that’s suited to rear passengers, air vents are a must, especially in our climate.

    Hey Tom, how would you compare the comfort aspect of the ride (road noise included between the Toyota Sedan 2.0L and the Mazda 3 sedan? ( on the standard rims). O

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 роки тому +2

      The Corolla's definitely softer, but it is still controlled. It has been damped very well, I reckon. It helps that the Corolla sedan mainly rolls on 15-16 inch wheels. Only the top, petrol-only ZR has lower-profile 18s. The Mazda 3 sedan is slightly softer at the front end than the hatch in that car, but it is still fairly firm on the 18-inch wheels that are standard on 5 of the 6 grades in Australia.

    What's fuel capacity for the 1.8L hybrid?
    Thinking of buying this as I have to do 1000kays per week on M31 Hume highway. Will one fuel refill enough for the whole week? Does it take E10?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 роки тому +1

      1. 43L
      2. Keep in mind hybrids use more fuel on the highway than they do in town, usually, but I still reckon you’d either make it on one tank or be fairly close
      3. Yes it does take E10

    • @rsg5850
      @rsg5850 4 роки тому

      @@chasingcars Thanks for the info. Too bad they reduced fuel tank from usual 50L otherwise would have been ideal.
      Is there a way to just turn battery mode on till it depletes? & how many kays that would be?
      So reckon it will be better to get plugin hybrid like Hyundai Ioniq or just a Hyundai Crdi diesel for better fuel efficiency?

    Can't decide between this or a 2018 Camry Hybrid as the cost for a brand new Corolla Hybrid sedan (base) is similar to a used Camry. Since you've driven both could you please give your opinion on which one would you go for if you had to choose? Thanks

    I can’t believe that Toyota gave the Corolla more practical space for seating and to be fair with the seats up....equal cargo capacity than their own 5 door! 🤔🤯.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  4 роки тому

      Do you mean the 5-door wagon? The hatch's boot is tiny.

    • @FlyingGentile
      @FlyingGentile 4 роки тому

      Chasing Cars yeah the hatch. But i find both boots tiny thats why i said they were about equal. No doubt that you can hold more bags or 🧳’s in sedan due to the squared profile though. But the boot of the 5 door should not have a marginal difference in space there should be no comparison. Here in America, as you probably already know, we use cubic feet. The sedan has 13.1 compared to 17.8 for the 5 door. But due to the shape on a “trunk” to the hatchback sloping hatch door, it “seems” like the sedan has more space. Even though the volume should be bigger in the hatch the stupid door basically makes it so the hatch looses alot of potential volume. Don’t get me wrong i watched your 5 door review of the car and you made your point(love your reviews) but both are similar. Just that one is more square and another has “style” 🥴 for practically from Toyota 🤦🏾‍♂️

      Good idea, Art. Their driving dynamics are quite similar, both sharing the TNGA platform, but off the top of my head I think the Corolla sedan bests the Prius for steering feel and chassis balance. But only just! They're both much better to drive than they probably need to be.
