In these toyotas the equipment is always a bit behind the competition, as they want to make sure it will be as reliable as possible. So they wait for the tech to mature a bit before they put it in their cars so it can be built more robust.
CockatooDude nah that’s def not the reason why lol, and if it is thats a major major lapse in judgment on Toyota’s behalf. To not be at the cutting edge of technology in your latest model would make no sense especially in something as simple as the screen 🤷🏽♂️
@@BMF604 Cost might also be an issue. Getting the infotainment system on the budget they had to, etc. I am not sure what design constraints they were given, but I assume they would have put a better system in there if they could have if the cost and reliability were the same.
With so many flavours of hybrid cars, two details I would love to hear in reviews: 1. The range in EV mode, if any With charging points at home and/or at work, a car with a useable EV only range; the IC engine can be standby for use only on long journeys out of town. 2. The EV only speeds.
Toyota's hybrid battery lasts about 2 km-s in the city before IC engine kicks in. It doesn't look like much but charging time is also quite quick (thanks to the size of battery) and soon enough EV mode kicks in again. This review is about hybrid which you can't charge yourself. Not at home, not at work. Only IC engine charges cars battery. This is most common hybrid system used by Toyota. And it works, I have Rav4, and average consumption is 6.8 l/100 km, 100% city driving. Before with CRV average was 11+ l/100 km. For me it's huge difference.
Range is like he said 2 km or so. EV only speed is around 40 km/h if put on EV mode. If its on automatic, you can cruise control with 90 km/h on battery only. Fuel economy is around 4.5L/100km (1.8 hybrid)
I’m a Ford man so naturally I’d take the new Focus however, that Corolla is very tempting. I’d definitely take it over the VW Golf without a second thought. I hope Toyota makes an high performance GR or TRD model to rival the Focus ST and Golf GTi, if the Yaris GRMN is anything to go by then imagine a supercharged manual Toyota hot hatch in this new Corolla body, I’d buy it in a heartbeat! Come on Toyota, make it happen!! Btw, fantastic review Matt!
Thr focus was always The go to option, but now I think fords interiors are way behind. Only on the fiesta st I can look past it. Once your getting into the quicker focus veriants, they are now to expensive for the quality. They have spent loog long resting on their lorals, same with Vx. All the other oems have had to evolve to to compete with fords sales figures.
Was following one today on the motorway and that back end looks gorgeous. Put all current hatchbacks to shame. Will probably opt for that 2 litre petrol for more oomph.
Why is he silly? That's his opinion. You can't generalize a cars worth. One might see a golf as something extremely good-looking with a great brand image, another might find them boring and hate VW. It's up to you to decide how you view them, just like it's the case with everyone else.
@Moonspell the hatchback is good enough I own the 1.2 turbo haven't had any problems with the boot but still if you want allot go boot space go buy the touring sports corolla wich looks marvelous as well for a station wagon really nice

@@XDflamingdragonDX yeah I know but, like we said in Spain: "Larger towers have fallen". I don't know how to translate that in english xD But yeah, sure Toyota is always realiable ;)
I don't know what's going on Toyota now but during early 2000s they made much less reliable cars. Because they made too much tough and reliable cars until then, that lets consumers hesitate to buy new one.
The cvt in this car is hot garbage. Already seen one replaced with 2700 miles on it. What do you expect with a Mazda trans anyway. Get the manual instead.
Not Poisoned Aleks I mean factory defects happen in all cars especially new ones. Plus there is no Mazda parts in this car. Mazda doesn’t even make CVT transmissions. You obviously mixed up information and are misinformed. Next time you comment do some research first.

Looks a winner for Toyota. Great review Mat. At some point can you do an estate comparison between the Corolla, a VW group car (say Golf or Leon) and a Hyundai ?
We drove this type of car last weekend and have instandly ordered one. It was so good and quiet to drive. And a lot of Fun. Thé new Corolla is like toyota discribes it. It's fantastic. 😎👍
Been looking for something to replace an aging BMW for a while and drove a 2.0 Hybrid last week (borrowed it from a colleague). I couldn't believe how quiet and smooth the ride was. The interior is fab with super comfy seats and the boot was big too (tourer). Other than it being a Toyota, I didn't even know what it was until I looked at the badge on the back. Very very impressive car all round. So good in fact I made my mind up immediately and will be ordering one in September.
I just bought one. I never thought I would own a Corolla. Especially after owning a Ford F-150, Mazda MX5 Miata GT, Audi A6, 4th gen 4runner, Ford Mustang, Camry, 5the gen 4runner limited. 3rd gen Tacoma TRD Sport, two Lexus ES, and a Wrangler JL. I am blown away by the little Corolla. It’s almost as fun to drive as the Miata, but almost as comfortable as the Lexuses I’ve owned. It has Apple CarPlay on 8” screen, made in Japan, near hybrid MPG, standard Toyota radar cruise control and parking sensors, and big digital dash, heated seats, garage door opener, smart key push start, etc and many more. And it’s one of the cheapest cars that I’ve owned. It’s one of the best deals of the decade for cars!
Love the new Corolla, and i think 16 minutes is the sweet spot for the new review format, the Lexus one before have some very rough editing to reach 15 minutes. Keep up the good work Matt and Carwow team!
Bought mine in Dec ‘18. The front seats are supporting of my really bad back problems. I have driven 6hrs at a time with no pain. On flat terrain I get somewhere over 60mpg at 40-45mph. That’s just the REGULAR engine... not a hybrid! Runs beautifully on highway on higher speeds at about 42mpg. There is a very slight hesitation when you nail the gas pedal down, but it is seriously able to pass other cars. It takes off. Toyota claims the 2020 model will have even more power. The back seat IS rather small, but it’s okay. It’s a Corolla...giant people aren’t likely to want one. Not great on cup holders. This car has so many little extras however, that make it very luxurious. Interior noise is okay as far as a small car goes. It can be loud on an aggregate surface. Not exhausting at all on long trips. Has LOTS of aerodynamic tricks to make it quiet. The cruise control radar will control braking also if someone pulls in front. It drives itself but the radar tends to let it travel across the lane a bit. Has a stiffer sports car-like suspension but it isn’t the least bit uncomfortable. When fully loaded with people it doesn’t sink down. There are no wiggles and marshmallowy turns. Comes with Toyota Entune which can be complicated. Don’t spend the extra $ on the hybrid. Don’t need it. DO get an extended warranty to cover any computer issues. That’s the bad thing about ALL cars today. Repairs are a financial nightmare due to all of the electronics. You don’t work on these in your driveway! People are always standing around looking at it when I have it parked at a store. It’s seriously cute. Definitely would suggest you buy one. Got 20 yrs out of my Tundra. No one beats Toyota. Nobody.
Honestly a very good review. I went to see one just for fun and I didn’t pick-up on all the flaws he is pointing out. Now I have to go back and take another look.
Great review and on the strength of this I bought an Icon Tech Corolla two weeks ago (with the Carwow discount, thank you very much). Generally a very good car. However, there is a fault with the Nearside Front Sensor (it keeps activating even when there is nothing in front of the vehicle). This is irritating at best and dangerously distracting when driving at worst. The battle I'm in now is to get Toyota GB and the Dealership to stop blaming each other for the appalling level of customer service I am now subject to in trying to get this problem resolved on a brand new car. It's enough to make me want to give the car back and revert back to VW. Apparently I cannot do that now though (even though I've had the car for less than 14 days) as I have highlighted the issue and they are "doing their best" to resolve it.
@@Jabber-ig3iw I personally dont like front wheel drive cars and i know toyota wont make a rear wheel drive version. It would compete with other hatchbacks in this segment that are awd.
Damn that backseat is cramped with three people there ! Just goes to show you how big they made the 10th gen Civic. That comfortably fits three in the back. Pretty much Accord territory now.
Thats the biggest problem with the corolla. There is just not enough space in the backseat. For someone who's 1,88 it's basically impossible to sit in the back. Thats crazy
It's looks very good indeed. I am glad Toyota stop making Auris wich looked boring and dull and came back with Corolla , that beats the competition in this segment on how it looks. Bravo!! 😀😀
I have the 2.0 litre hybrid and i can say that that version of the car has a whole different level of power than the 1.8 litre, that thing will keep on pulling even on faster speeds. I have driven many cars but the corolla is just so well built and it feels like a quality car, would buy another one 10/10
Bought Corolla Lounge 1 year ago. Have done 12 thousand km's on it. 2 main problems in my opinion are: - small fuel tank - very noisy interior I would prefer Toyota to put a bit more effort to make the car less noisy inside.

Great video, as always. Thank you. I really like the new Corolla styling (look). I've first seen one on the motorway while passing it and I've literally slowed down for it to catch up with me and have a 2'nd look. I was genuinely surprised when I've seen the Corolla badge. My 1'st ever brand new car was a 2007 Corolla (US) that I really enjoyed for a while. The 2L version sounds tempting and the 50+ mpg economy... wow, really reminds me of a Prius I drove for a bit. As much as I like my 2L automatic diesel BMW for what it is as a package, the 35(ish) mpg isn't at all very pleasing in comparison. Kind regards.
After driving BMW's, Audi's and VW's for years, I test drove one on Monday whilst my wife's car was in for a service (Toyota Aygo). The service I have received from Toyota compared to other manufactures has been vastly better and so on Friday, I ordered a new Excel Sport Touring 2.0l to replace my 3 series BMW. Massively impressed with economy and best of all value for money compared to the German cars. Just a shame I didn't do it sooner.
I own the 2019 Corolla Hatchback XSE with brown leather interior, top of the line trim here in Canada.. I even added the extra spoiler (looks much better). We have Apple Car Play and Android Auto is coming as an update sometime soon.
Right Lane Hog I inquired about it and it is 100% real leather. Has a mix of fabric in the centre as well where you’d sit on it and rest your back. Very nicely done. I get compliments all the time on the vehicle interior.

CockatooDude maybe is so but screen resolution and GPU power don’t require more extensive testing.
With so many flavours of hybrid cars, two details I would love to hear in reviews:
1. The range in EV mode, if any
With charging points at home and/or at work, a car with a useable EV only range; the IC engine can be standby for use only on long journeys out of town.

@@XDflamingdragonDX yeah I know but, like we said in Spain: "Larger towers have fallen". I don't know how to translate that in english xD But yeah, sure Toyota is always realiable ;)
Toyotas only string keeping them strong in the market is their reliability, other than that they will be long gone.
I don't know what's going on Toyota now but during early 2000s they made much less reliable cars. Because they made too much tough and reliable cars until then, that lets consumers hesitate to buy new one.

The new era of the Corolla has just began

If you want to hurry it says: “No! I’ll take my own time, thank your very much.”
The 2L engine is quick, smooth and fun. Great car.
What an impressive review, Matt! This has heavily helped me in making a buying decision without multiple thoughts.

My 1'st ever brand new car was a 2007 Corolla (US) that I really enjoyed for a while. The 2L version sounds tempting and the 50+ mpg economy... wow, really reminds me of a Prius I drove for a bit.
