My 2005's modules were failing one after another. So I bought an entire battery from a 2014 Prius for $850 from a junkyard. Runs like a champ now.
@@outdoordinsmore Really depends on year models. 2005-06 is different than 08-10, gen 2 is different than gen 3 or 4. Battery usually lasts 10-15 years, so a 5 year old high mileage prius is more reliable than a 15 year old low mileage regarding to the battery.

Yes braking. In our Prius C it seems effective in stop and go driving as the additional braking effect seems to be activating a stronger regeneration charge to the traction battery increasing the charge level. I remember when I read about the "B" position in the manual it didn't really give a clear picture of operation and benefit. Is anyone more familiar with the "B" position?
@@discerningmind Is does increase regenerative braking, also, vat least in some models, run the engine without gas as an air compressor to slow over long downhill stretches.
YES!!! I cannot stand when people put the gear lever in b on any Toyota hybrid because they think it stands for battery. You are running the engine as an air pump with it in b! You will probally get 10mpg worse at least.
These are phenomenal vehicles I agree, I have an old 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid Amazing gas mileage even still after 9 years of owning it! Never once broke down, I can recall once the car got 99 MPG, It was impressive!
I just saw a 2011 Prius on fb marketplace with a dead battery after 111K miles on sale for $7K Totaled smh. Dude said he had a refurbished battery warrantied for 3 months lol.
Got mine at the end of 2019. What I noticed about the gas mileage is that it's usually about 55mpg in the cold months, then gets as high as 65mpg during the summer heat. Then back down to upper 50's as it got colder again. Interesting.
The Corolla dominates the driving school market where I live but the Hybrid version is the next step. For the record, my driving school car was a 1980 Dodge Aspen coupe.
Id use the kWh rating instead of the Ah when comparing the battery sizes. The Ah rating doesn't necessarily mean the same between two different batteries if they are different voltages. Whereas the kWh rating accounts for the difference in battery voltages and thus is able to directly compare the energy capacity of various batteries. Helpful tip, i really enjoy your videos
Toyota should be paying you. After watching so many of your videos mentioning Toyota reliability, we bought a Toyota. Love it so far. Nice complement to our 8 year old Honda CR-V, which I expect will go forever.
The corolla with TSS 2.0 is a great car to "self-drive" with the Tesla-like comma2. It is considered the best self-driving car OTB with an openpilot setup.
It's really only comfy in highway driving. I've owned one for a year and a bit now. National roads? Best you only keep lane assist on ( and even then, be prepared to override ). Nice to have when you're on a backed-up road with no way to overtake though.
Before I forget. Even on a highway, overtaking is a PITA. There is no decent range/ distance setting. The radar pilot generally breaks too soon and revs too late when switching lanes. Kinda gets in the way of other, more constant, drivers. Still, pretty comfy to have over long drives compared to nothing at all. Piece of advice: get the 2 litre version. The 1.8 is slooow, especially in highway situations or high-speed overtaking ( 110kmph+).
I am a very satisfied Prius driver, the car is comfortable, reliable and inexpensive in maintenance. The car is full options and after more than 9 years and 100.000 miles everything functions without fault. In Europe, where I am from, there are Toyota Priuses which have run more than 600.000 miles effortlessly! So, Scotty is right! Toyota's are great cars. In Europe there is also a 2 liter hybrid Corolla available. It has 184 hp, acceleration 0-60 in less than 8 seconds and a limited top speed of 112 m per hour.
Scotty, the "B" shift mode is not "battery mode" -- that's actually what the EV button does. The B shift mode is for driving down big hills simulating engine breaking.
Wrong, it's full regeneration mode, which slows the whole car down due to the resistance of the generator and acts like low gear. It doesn't "simulate" engine breaking, it is engine breaking/regen.
@@MrNopehaha Wrong. It is NOT full regeneration mode. It is the opposite. Indeed it does not simulate engine breaking, it IS engine breaking. And engine breaking is NOT regeneration. Engine braking is done with the ICE engine and just wastes energy into heat. Regeneration is done with the electric motors. But when your battery is 100% full, you cannot do regeneration anymore, so you want the engine braking option. You only need to use B mode when you cannot do regeneration anymore otherwise you are just wasting energy. Even in the mountains in Switzerland and Italy I've never had to use B mode. I've only used it once in Germany.
This car is incredible...I bought mine new about 18 months ago.....25K miles later, I have few complaints....passenger seat is terrible....other than that....the car is amazing...i get anywhere from 52mpg(without trying at all) to 63mpg (hypermiling and trying hard) The car has plenty of power...don't let anyone tell you it doesn't....
The B stands for an engine breaking mode. Not battery. I have a 2009 Camry hybrid and it has the same thing. Since the Prius came out it’s always been a breaking mode when your going down a big hill
I just bought a Toyota Corolla hybrid before I saw this video..was sold on the gas mileage . Asked me in a few months or a year how I like it?? Thanks Scotty for your videos!!
Yeah - run the stop sign while turning the wheel one-handed and holding a phone up to record video with the other... He may know how to fix things, but a safe driver he aint!
I have this exact car, going to upgrade interior with leather covers and rubber floor to make it much nicer and more rugged, The infotainment can be upgraded for $220-$250 and modernized touchscreen, I hate the infotainment as it is.
I have this car, and I’m usually around 63 mpg; though I drive 99% of the time in eco mode. During the winter here in the northeast, it dropped to an average of around t0 mpg, since the gas engine was running so often, just to provide heat. It really is a great car.
When descending a long grade, you use "B" mode which tells the Prius to attempt to emulate "engine braking" in a conventional vehicle. Depending on the vehicle's speed and the battery SOC (state of charge), the Prius will do this using regenerative braking and/or high-RPM zero-fuel-flow engine braking. Prevents overheating the brakes.
Scotty, I have a 2010 Prius purchased new in May 2009, , now with nearly 180,000 miles, original traction large battery, and believe it or not the original 12 volt battery. Very low cost to maintain as well. There is no fan belt or serpentine belt that needs to be replaced. The engine is driven by a metal chain belt, no need to replace. Spark plugs are good for well over 100,000 miles. 10,000 mile oil changes, I use 0w20 Mobil one and a factory oil filter, no oil used during that time, amazing. The 2020 Corolla is basically the same drive train as well, very dependable, excellent mpg, very low cost to maintain, just change oil, and air filter when needed.
I distinctly recall you saying one shouldn't buy a bew car because one doesn't know what the gliches are. Yet, here you are ....and a hybrid no less. SCOTTY!!!!!!!
Very nice and actually pretty impressive for a hybrid. Just an FYI; the "B" gear is actually for Engine Brake which is ideal for downhill or steep drive to help preserve your brakes.
@@DJ-xi4yt In Hybrids it uses the electric motors to "engine" brake. The "B" shifter setting will start to discharge the battery during regular driving so as to create capacity for braking using the motor, as the current created has to have somewhere to go.
Hey Scotty, the B under D(rive) doesn't stand for "Battery setting" but for B(rake) as in "Engine Braking" and is the equivalent of downshifting into a lower gear
bought the european version like one year ago. drove from berlin to france on a 5000 km vacation. i have the touring version though with the real deal alloy 17 inch wheels. mine is red, wheels are black....is such a beauty. i am really satisfied how it goes, only thing it did not have android auto...revision at 15k came cheap...
Those are awesome! Especially because it is an electric car which is powered by a gasoline engine like a diesel locomotive. They have decent performance for what they are too!
When do you think they will make a plug-in hybrid version with like 30-40 miles of range? The RAV4 prime looks pretty good to me. I think Toyota will have to at least have a plug-in model if they want to compete with the new electric cars coming from GM, Hyundai, and Volkswagen.
Andrew Meehan This car can go battery only for a few miles. (Shift to B). = Just need a bigger battery to go farther, pretty sure someone will be able to mod that in.
The Prius prime is a pretty sweet PHEV. It has 40 km of all-electric range and a ridiculous 1.8 L/100 km combined fuel efficiency. The one minus side is the low battery capacity (only 9kWh) but it charges from empty in 13 hours from a standard 110v outlet or 2.5 hours from a 220v. I really wanted one but had to go for a standard Corolla for cost's sake. I still love it don't get me wrong but there's no beating a prius prime in gas mileage.
@@jonmccormick8683 Hmm. I remember him saying that. It was confusing because I thought regenerative hybrids couldn't do that, only plug-ins. Anyways, I did test drive a Honda insight hybrid and it drove similar to how Scotty was showing (electric at low speed and the engine kicks in over like 15 mph.)
@@Sanity016 They get great mileage, there is no arguing that. The issue is 26 miles of range (i believe that is what it is) is no longer competitive in it's segment. I think once VW or another automaker can make a 250 mile range EV for around 30k people with probably skip hybrids altogether. The only way Toyota can remain a reasonable option is if they offer a plug-in that is cheaper and can run on electric for most people's daily commutes. Honda is in the same boat as well.
I love ,love, love my 2010 Prius ! I never thought I would say that . I'm waiting for my Prius to break so I can get a new Toyota hybrid. I got mine be three years ago with 60k miles for $8k and have done fluids and brakes that's it. I get 44-46 mpg just drive it normal like any other car .I can't see buying anything other than a hybrid not because I'm saving the planet because I'm cheep and they have proven to be reliable.
you might want to look at the 22/23 cross hybrid , it seems to have higher road clearance still get's 40plus , so you could straddle a dead opossum with out fear of it getting smashed into by your oil pan.
Ended getting a Sorrento and a venza will see witch one turns out better . So far about the same except im betting 39-40 mpg and she in venza gets 43-44 mpg . Dont know if it is driving style or the car . The kia is bigger on the inside like a highlander. Very mad about toyota rumor of them disabling the remote start i already paid for and adding a subscription fee. Still working so far.
I had a discussion with a Toyota tech the other day and was telling me that the American built ones are just as good as Japanese, which really surprised me. I am with you Scotty, l have always heard that Japanese were better built machines. It has nothing to do with American workers, it's that way with any of the other Toyota plants across the world and would rather have a vehicle built from its country of origin with pretty much anything that I'm buying
I bought a Toyota hybrid, i plan it to keep it untill its +- 15years old… i have had many convential cars… only my volvo made it to 22 years…(im strict on maintanance) rest rusted out, went beyond economical repair… my Opel(GM ecotec) caught fire… your celica is a good car but in areas where you have roadsalt its hard to keep it for 20-30 years.

What's the fuel mileage on the highway for longer trips?

I own 3 Priuses (Prii) and do all the work myself. I've even repaired the main battery 7 times.Very dependable cars. If you keep them over 10 years, the battery will start to fail. My 2005's modules were failing one after another. So I bought an entire battery from a 2014 Prius for $850 from a junkyard. Runs like a champ now.
Cld b a new feature integrated into the B mode. Regen braking n batt mode only since this newer model can run on battery alone. Who knows..
@@amazoidal Any other issues? Thinking about buying a high mileage Prius and just fixing the battery if I need to
@@outdoordinsmore Really depends on year models. 2005-06 is different than 08-10, gen 2 is different than gen 3 or 4. Battery usually lasts 10-15 years, so a 5 year old high mileage prius is more reliable than a 15 year old low mileage regarding to the battery.

It is for Balls...when you need more speed
Yup, applies engine braking, ole Scotty is thinking about the EV button :P
@@Brandon-eh4tz Yep, it's so you don't go riding the brakes and cook them when driving down a mountain pass.
The B on gearlever is for engine braking, not battery :)
Yes and it's pure joy when driving in the city. You control the speed precisely with just the gas pedal.
YES!!! I cannot stand when people put
the gear lever in b on any Toyota hybrid because they think it stands for battery. You are running the engine as an air pump with it in b! You will probally get 10mpg worse at least.

Scotty, the B on the gear shift is for Braking, it uses the engine to dump energy to slow you down to replicate downshifting an auto conventional car.
Toyota hybrid vehicles are bulletproof!

I think he said he's 66. Looks real good for his age. Said he started as an teenager.
how old is he and when did he start?
Got mine at the end of 2019. What I noticed about the gas mileage is that it's usually about 55mpg in the cold months, then gets as high as 65mpg during the summer heat. Then back down to upper 50's as it got colder again. Interesting.
Hey Scotty.... that’s not a “battery” button ..... that’s stands for braking... similar to low on a conventional transmission
It’s very cool that the Corolla got a hybrid version. 50+mpg is crazy.
I wasn't expecting the 180 ps Corolla Hybrid to be that fast and responsive. Surprising. They worth every cent.
I currently own 12 Corollas for my driving school business. When it is replacement time I need to look at this hybrid. Beauty
The Corolla dominates the driving school market where I live but the Hybrid version is the next step. For the record, my driving school car was a 1980 Dodge Aspen coupe.
I think I might buy it!!! Thanks Scotty

Why did I just have the urge to search for 2020 Corolla Hybrids on UA-cam, then I see Scotty posts this 24 minutes ago
You look like you had a riot Scotty .

That B on the transmission isn't for battery, it's for brake. All new Carolla and Yaris have it.

UA-cam at it’s best right here. Back in the day you would need one of us community channels on cable TV to do a show like this. Technology is crazy!

I have this car, and I’m usually around 63 mpg; though I drive 99% of the time in eco mode. During the winter here in the northeast, it dropped to an average of around t0 mpg, since the gas engine was running so often, just to provide heat. It really is a great car.

Well, Roky was a famous Texas musician and Scotty's in Houston. Most music fans in Houston know about 13th Floor Elevators. ;)
Cheaper to replace breaks than an engine
@@DJ-xi4yt In Hybrids it uses the electric motors to "engine" brake. The "B" shifter setting will start to discharge the battery during regular driving so as to create capacity for braking using the motor, as the current created has to have somewhere to go.

OH WOW YOU DID. I bought it straight from Japan, wasn't even off the line yet. Very cool. I love my car.
Millions of cabbies and Uber drivers that need to keep operating and maintenance costs as low as possible choose the Prius.
