- Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr travels to Savannah, Georgia, to drive the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Elana loved the redesigned 2020 Corolla; will she say the same about the hybrid version? And how does the Corolla Hybrid compare to the Toyota Prius? Watch to find out.
Q: What kind of engine and transmission does the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid have?
A: It uses the same drivetrain as the Toyota Prius: a 1.8-liter gas engine coupled to two electric motors and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Q: And what kind of fuel economy does the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid get?
A: Perhaps not surprisingly, it gets the same EPA-rated 52 mpg combined fuel economy as the Prius.
Q: How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid cost?
A: It starts at $23,880, including destination, making it one of the most affordable midsize hybrids.

It would be fun passing more gas stations.
Thank you. Yours is one of the best informative reviews on that car I've watched so far.
Dear Toyota, look through these comments and hundreds of others and you'll see there's definitely a market here in the States for your epic Corolla "sportwagon".... Please bring it over here! It would absolutely build on the momentum y'all have going with the redesigned hatchback and now the sedan.
P.S. If y'all wanna make a coupe of some kind for the Corolla that would be great too👍
M.W. You are absolutely right but may I suggest you contact Toyota directly just in case they are not reading the Comments section. #WeWantWagons
👍
Me too. The Wagon looks good and has great practicality. Also Toyota Durability makes it a no brainer.
Yes!
Maybe im alone here, but wouldn't a camry wagon also be really nice to exist?
Great review! Thanks!
Really wish you could get the hybrid in the hatchback body. That said, I would totally buy a Corolla Hybrid over a Prius any day. I can't stand the "quirkiness" of the Prius. I just want a normal looking car that gets epic mpg.
I completely agree. I would love to see a hatch-hybrid. I'm wondering what that may do to cabin noise, though. Do you think swapping out those tires would lead to a significant reduction in cabin noise? I'm sure they could improve on the soundproofing as well.
Get a 2000 Honda insight take the battery out put in battery bypass I'm getting 150 miles per gallon. Check out ---insight central.net--got car for $600 it's all aluminum.
The hatch is almost useless space wise. I’m sure America will get it. If customers actually knew of the options they’d only mention a wagon version which would provide real cargo capacity.
I love your reviews keep up the good work
*Presses Phone*
"There are no phones set up in Bluetooth, would you like to set one up?"
"It keeps asking irrelevant questions!" lol
I also kinda feel that little bottle could have fit standing...
She expected the car to understand that she had no interest in pairing her phone given the fact that she was not the owner. That is perhaps a bit beyond the capability of the system. 😁
@@toronado455 But she pressed phone before getting that prompt lol.
Good review of top contenders. I like the group discussion format. Well done.
The way she says hybrid.. Hi-Bread
Indeed she say BREAD! Feeling hungry? Maybe Hi-Breed will fix her! 😆😆😆
*2:16*

I get around 55-57 mpg. I drive 160 miles a day. About 98% highway. 62mph is the sweet spot on Cruise control. The engine turns off and uses the hybrid mode when it’s level ground or down hill. When not using cruise control you can use the electric motor alone with the engine off, up to 70 mph BUT you have to be progressive with the gas pedal. I bought mine in July 2021, I already have 15,000 miles! No regrets. I get about 550 miles per tank. Only has a 10 gallon gas tank.
Very cool, thanks Have a good evening
Does this have a first gear like the hatch?
The higher road noise ie tire noise on those 15” is because they’ve used low rolling resistance tires which are always a fairly noisy tire
I thought that might be why! CR also said the hybrid is noisy. If it turns out to be just the tires, that's an easy fix.
It was astonishing she didn't know this and all she could comment on was the wheel size.
What tires should I get for lower noise???
Not only that, they're probably overinflated for higher MPG.
@@davidvulichFor this car? Any tire that isnt low rolling resistance and some tires are rated for lower noise than others. Oh, and dont go overboard with the tire pressure.
Hi you all,
In terms of performance, would you compare to which car? Ford Fiesta or kia cerato?
wow a review by an actually intelligent person. thank you!
I was so excited for the Corolla hybrid, but I'm very disappointed it doesn't have an option with blindspot monitoring. It's only available on the SE and XSE trims.
Just bought a 2020 last night for my wife. I have a 2018 and I love it. Great cars.
Hybrid? Or ICE?
My 2005 Corolla LE just got totalled last week and I'm looking at jumping into a new one. Either the 2019 Hatch for that sportier drive or a 2020 Hybrid for fuel savings (and a similar feeling vehicle to my '05, I'm sure).
Who on earth is looking to buy a Corolla hybrid and expecting it win races!? Why must EVERY vehicle be judged on FUN over Practical and peaceful, MPG’s. SPorts cars are for speeding.
Amen.
Agreed.
right? i just need something efficient & comfy when going from red light to red light. i'd even prefer a great sound system over horsepower for some portable partying.
@@TK-gd9td Red light to red light is where/when Hybrids pay for themselves.
Right Lane Hog I’m sure she was not in power mode.
Just wish we could make the hybrid look more like the SE/XSE, otherwise the pricing for the hybrid is pretty attractive.
Can you explain why your mpg is only 36.1? Refer to your video at 6.55. Thanks.
Nice review. Well, this is a big step up from my 97 Corolla which I thought was great because it has airbags and what been super reliable, but with gas prices set to rise now big time, I'd consider this.
Sold my twenty year old perfect running Toyota Corolla last week, and bought a 2011 Toyota Auris Hybride. No reason to change to a other brand, if you drive the best car build car ever.
And yes... Hybride is fun to drive!
is prius still better for taxi? if so , why?
Well knowing Eco vs Sport/power mode works, she was most likely in eco when she floored it, sport/power make a huge difference in acceleration.
would like to test drive this and the insight
2:04 Is horsepower accurate on the 2 liter engine?
I love how you say “hi-bred” lol! Also what did you expect? A turbo hi-bred?
When are you going to do another EV comparison test like you did in 2013?
"Prius in a different outfit" actually sounds perfect to me. Prius is a tremendously practical car, but it's just so offensively ugly, so this Corolla Hybrid might be perfect for me.
"Prius in a different outfit". She makes it sound like a bad thing. The Prius actually handles very well on Toyota's new global architecture. You take Prius handling and this new Corolla's looks and you got a solid combination.
One thing I like over the prius with this corolla are speakers on the rear dash. I assume that it has them, but I dont see it covered. A couple of 6x9 sounds pretty good using the trunk as a large speaker box. One thing I hate about new cars in general are their obvious design to eliminate aftermarket stereos. You either buy “the best” that they offer or you are stuck like Chuck. You used to be able to spend $200 on a head unit, and it would absolutely sound better than anything available stock with more features and more power. I own a car with a stock gps head unit, and here is why you dont need one. YOU MORE THAN LIKELY HAVE A SMARTPHONE! A smartphone will have more up to date maps and info while you need to manually update your head unit. My old head unit needs $100 gps dvd from the dealer, and I had to add an amp to make it sound good. Also the head unit locks you out if the car is moving. Got a buddy in the car that can punch in the info while you drive, to bad. Rant over
The top of the center console is too far back to serve as an armrest for short drivers. Does it slide forward?
YES, it does slide forward...
That blue colour is nice.
Seems like a great car but does it really need a 160mph speedometer?
Car reviewers are getting one note song these days. Power, speed, fun tech tech tech. I wish they would review a car for what is intended and kind of drivers are targeted to.
If I want a fun car to drive I would be getting most likely the GT 86. Manual transmission.
If I a want a car that can take me from point A to point B with efficiency and relax driving I would certainly get a hybrid but I don’t necessarily want the Prius.
If speed and reckless driving is your thing get something like... I don’t know a Hellcat. I don’t think Toyota makes those kind of cars
You are not this cars demographics then.GT 86 is not for bland, practical driving.
well, corolla do make a good point in practical and reliability.. no question on that, but so do civic and other car in that same segment.. so they want to compete in which they never excel before, 'a fun to drive"...
Fabius Irvan Fabian Abron my point here is, not everybody is interested on getting a fast fun car to drive. Don’t expect fun and performance from a hybrid you just won’t get it.
The only fun thing about a hybrid vehicle is saving you money at the fuel pump.
If you want a car that burns oil and blows head gaskets then get an 86/FRS/BRZ junk boxer. If I want a fun car I'll grab a 5L mustang or a Dodge charger Hemi.
@@robertom883 Well said.
Consumer Reports had the same complaints about the ride and noise in the Corolla Hybrid.
~53 mpg is attractive.
How many miles/ years can it go before replacing the battery. Can the hybrid battery even be replaced and what is the approx cost?
Toyota offers a 10 year/150,000 mile hybrid battery warranty.
What kind of mpg did you get during the drive?
she got 36.1 mpg
Thanks, Elana. Great review. I was going to buy one of these tomorrow, but then you pointed out that there is no Android Auto.
Same
The new Corolla sedan looks so good ,inside and out.The hybrid is definitely the pick of the bunch .
Nice review but please include the trunk or hatchback capacity and usefulness........people do carry stuff in their cars. Nice to see Toyota is offering interior in something other than all black. Now that Toyota is offering several hybrid models I expect the Prius to be replaced by an EV to compete with Tesla and other EVs coming to market. Surely Toyota can equal or exceed what other companies are doing. Would be nice to have the Corolla Touring Sports hybrid sold in North America.
I’m considering this car 🚗 for 2 reasons. I want mpg not mph and I don’t want the negative stigma that comes with the Prius. I’m not a tree hugger.
That is why I got one, also apple car play with eight inch huge screen, not replacing brakes every 30k Miles, not replacing timing belt every 100k miles, lowest cost of ownership, 2 year Toyota care, led lights all around and newest safety features standard.
Just gonna go out on a limb here and say people who’d want this don’t care about “fun”... nor did the designers intend it to be 😜
*gasp* heresy
Ya man! I'm just looking for a fuel efficient reliable car lol! I don't care about fun! I'm in traffic!
I would not mind this car as my daily commuter and having my current car (2017 Accord Coupe V6 manual as my weekend fun).
I have a 2012 Prius Plug-In (now called the Prime) and you MUST put car in the "Power Mode" and you will have no problem passing cars or goin up hills. My Prius won't move much if on Regular Mode or Eco Mode; but Power Mode feels like a "normal car".

I saved some money and purchased the 2021 Palisade Limited and I’m quite satisfied. The Telluride is being sold above MSRP, in most places. I even managed to get $450 below MSRP. In this current market, that’s a WIN.
Extremely glad to see this review! I've been looking at what I'd say is this car's direct competitor (Honda Insight), but I wanted to hold out and see what the corolla hybrid has to offer. Based on this review alone, I think the Insight is still the one to go for. I'm still going to look at a corolla hybrid, but not offering any other trim level is a bit of a let down.
G M the Toyota is the more sophisticated and efficient of the two.
@@nickiemcnichols5397 Yes, it would seem that the Toyota hybrid system is more efficient at higher speeds (70+ mph or so). I can't comment on the sophistication of the system as I need to do a little more research. The Insight has more punch behind it for acceleration purposes, so for practical driving that might matter more to me than a few mpg. That said, Toyota has been doing hybrid systems for 20+ years now starting with the Prius. I'll still hold out on a final decision until I can drive both of them.
What’s the “Prius lifestyle”?
Buying the Corolla LE Hybrid
I also drive Lyft & Uber and in 2.5 years I put 310,000 miles on my 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid... which also got me use of Carpool lane with no passengers
There is no 2,0 no hybrid version...so what did you had ?? :D
Going to get my Corolla 2.0 hybrid pretty soon in Touring Sports executive trim. Looks great and has a nice amount of horses under that hood 184. The cool thing Toyota did was give every production line a bit different look, Touring Sport, Hatch, etc. all look a bit different. In my opinion they all look a lot better than the previous Corolla.
I like this video it helps me push the caca dodo out faster-while eating
HI-BREAD! GREAT VIDEO!!
What's real mpg hope it's still cheap to own.
Good job, Elana!
Bought one this week been driving it 3 days. The car is great for what I intend it to be which is gas efficient, low maintenance A to B car. If your looking for a fun ride this is not the car for you it's sluggish on the freeway, has very little pep. Like I said that is not what I was looking for though Safety and Gas Efficiency is what I was looking for and it does both. Got ours in Black and tinted the windows it doesn't look half bad
Finally, until this generation, I would consider this as an alternative of the Honda Civic Sedan or Hatchback as they have multilink suspension and improved interior, exterior. Would get it in MT tho.
ima gonna have this
I have older prius, but the summer range is once a month fills up, and I get about 50 mpg to 100mpg. I am planning to trade it in for the Corolla hybrid, it will have the next generation hybrid system that may get even further range. I am sure the corolla hybrid drives nice, but the New Prius after 2019 will over AWD. 2019 Prius drives very similar to a luxury car. It is a very pleasant car to drive. My Hybrid save me money, My truck was costing me about $6000 a year on fuel, but My hybrid only cost me $600 to $1500 a year on fuel, that is almost of $4500 saving a year than using my truck
You get 100 mpg? No way.
@@justgivemethetruthToyota underrates their cars, they are capable of much more. You just need to hyper mile.

We got one last April. A bit too much road noise otherwise a great car to drive and 50 + MPG is wonderful as is it's passing power.
Sick car
I test drove the corolla hybrid the other day with the cloth seats and I have to say they are not designed for anyone over 6 ft, im 6'2"... the seats are too narrow and the headroom situation was not all that great either
It's still missing Android Auto. It's one of the only compact car that still doesn't have it. Toyota says they are working, but I don't know why it's taking so long
I can't drive a car with out it 😂
It's because they have a problem with Google spying on everybody and still haven't ironed out a contract with them because of it.
I'm not sure how these smart cars work. Is there a wifi connection for updates to the system? If android auto gets released tomorrow, will every vehicle get updated or do you have to buy a new car?
Back end privacy issues, Toyota probably doesn't want to give up the data to Google.
No mention of the trunk space.
@@JWNGeorge Not if they are well-fed full size Italians. Corolla sedan trunk is noticeably smaller than Honda Insight.
She's wrong about the EV mode. We have the red 2020 Corolla and I'm on battery in my commute a lot at 50-65. You just have to learn how to get it into the mode. Because of the nature of my commute I'm getting 63 mpg. You have to have the right kind of roads and traffic to do it, though. I get that because I can get it into EV mode so often at the higher speeds in addition to the most of the way through the towns I pass through. In city driving or highway would be hard to get those numbers, though. 52 is still awesome.
Oh, in my experience reading speed signs feature is barely over 50%. Always picks up on the 20 signs by schools, but the highway signs with 60 below and 65 on the top, I've only had it recognize the 60. This will be great as it gets better.
Свабода Слова
What other vehicle if any pre this purchase did you own ?
Why is there a tachometer on a CVT?
The best way to drive a CVT, is using the tachometer. While accellerating keep the revs between 2.5k & 4k tpm, the whine about whining CVT's is over and it will accellerate in a good manor. I've been drive-ins CVT's since 1964, no problem. In Europe we get the Corolla Hybrid with the 2-L engine, 184 BP.
The Corolla Hybrid replaces the Prius-C, which Toyota has discontinued
Really? you can still build a 2019 Prius C on the Toyota website. Is 2019 the last year? The Corolla hybrid is a vastly better car for sure!
@@toronado455 Prius C is gone from USA.
I want this car but I don't like that it doesn't have the android system. :-(
"how many turtles you're saving" classic lol
I own the hybrid and you wont get 700 miles on a tank. It's only 11.4 gallons, not 13 (bummer) and the numbers you're reading from the car's dashboard computer are calculated at the time, conditions, and speed your driving "at that moment" of time.
True mpg is calculated at the pump when you: total trip miles driven / by gallons to fill = your exact mpg. I get 52 mpg driving over 500 miles/week. Sure I see 64, 73, and 69 mpg, etc., but that's irrelevant for real world comparison. Hope this helped.
good commuter car.... the price is right and the the mpgs is great

“Why? Are you moving in here?", is an underrated comment 😂
They should of made it a sportback or a hatchback. They made a wagon but the us isn’t getting it :(
Tell Toyota USA you want the wagon.
12 skits Absolutely. I think I would get the new Prius simply due to its more practical hatchback design. I have a 2006 Prius and you can haul an amazing amount of cargo with the rear seats folded down. Not an option with the Corolla hybrid.
But a Corolla hybrid wagon would be awesome!
@@turboclaybird The Corolla Hybrid wagon is currently being awesome in Europe with a choice of 1.8 and 2.0 liter powertrains .
I don't see this color variant sold as a hybrid
They need to release an AWD hatchback version with the Camry Hybrid powertrain... Appeal to people who want something more sporty with good acceleration, plus snow driving, road trippers, and people who don't want the intersectional tribal image associated with the Prius.
Yes the gas engine has lower horsepower but it is combined with the electric motor to be well above just 120hp. Haven't looked at the exact numbers but I don't think it's just 120
gmu_alum08 I think it is combined, engine has 90hp don’t quote me on the exact spec
I don't get it - I thought it has just one trim level (LE). I have one.
They should offer the Xse bumper to this hybrid.
Need to decide: this one or Hyundai Ioniq
Toyota for reliability
I'd like to see a wagon version of the Corolla like what Europeans get.

Exactly. 'Fun to drive' car is an overly used jargon. She is comparing apples and oranges throughout the video. Not at all a good review from Edmunds.
good review, but changing wheel with any used 16 or 17 wheel should be very cheap with the tires on. Probably with $400 total, you will get good used 17 wheel+tire installed.
I like the looks of the Sport model better.
How do U charge it ?
You don't charge it. No need to plug.
Genius by Design - by driving it
I do think that if they made the electric motors put out more power with a little tweaking they could make it much more fun.
I hope Toyota has upgraded their headlights because unless the car came with LEDs or HIDs, the lighting output is very dim.
Leds all around
My question: why is this cheaper than the Prius and how; what does it lose out compared to the Prius?
Or at least cheaper in Canada
Doesn't have hatch cargo space, more high trim levels such as a sunroof, lumbar or AWD options. However the interior dash in my opinion is far superior your eyes/head don't have to swivel constantly so you can keep your eyes on the road and not have neck strain in my opinion. However Europe has those options.
Hatchback make a difference👍
Smaller rims.... But probably stiffer sidewalls for rolling resistance efficiency, translating to a poorer experience.

Hahahahja omg that 2009 video. Awesome
When commenting on responsiveness or acceleration, you need to mention which mode {eco, normal, or power) you have the car on. Responsiveness in Power mode is VERY significantly fast. Since you didn't mention the mode, it must have been in Eco mode, which is expectedly sluggish. It shows you're not familiar with the car enough, to comment on it.
I drive 100 miles a day in my Audi A3. I want to trade it in for something better on gas or electric. But I'm having a hard time with the fact I'd have to forfeit too much performance for a car like this
Nikk Carroll Try accord hybrid!
I prefer the wagon for more utility and the rear windshield wiper. It is missing the sport/power button, I need more power when going uphill fully loaded. It is missing the 7-speed sport sequential shiftmatic mode driving, I need to downshift to slow down the car faster and to control the speed going downhill. The rest are perfect for me. Also can Toyota offer creative financing for trade in? Finally I love Toyota's 25k miles free maintenance program.
