Really appreciate this content and video. When improving the turn and backswing, how important is it to consider eye dominance and maintained eye contact on the ball? I’m a right-eye dominant and right handed player who’s always struggled with a shorter turn but then after seeing a short clip Mike posted and this video, I experimented with closing my right eye and just using my left -turn was much bigger. Great video. A golf instructor that works in one of the retail sporting goods store I frequent pointed out this exact issue as being something that I needed to work on before considering upgrading my driver. It feels awkward and very short at first, but when executed properly, it allows me to hit the ball further than I ever hit before.

Thanks guys, great stuff. The issue I always had was that despite doing the shoulder turn correctly, I didn't correctly shift the weight into my trail foot (weight went outside of foot late and caused a horrible late hip sway). This caused a reverse pivot, and from there the only place to come is steep and over the top. Its still something I have a continuous fight with. What really resonated with me was Shaun's comment about how changing something like this and suddenly fix something else that you had no idea were linked in the first place. Its the reason I love golf so much. The worlds most complicated puzzle. Keep up the good work! (handicap of 6.3 but hope to get a bit lower this season with your help!)
This is so helpful. So easy to get wrong. One question. When we get to the end of the backswing and our shoulders have turned 90 degrees hopefully. And we are looking at the ball from that point should it look like the ball is ahead of the tip of the shoulder or more or less in line with left upper part of the left bicept. Not sure what is enough turn when looking from that positionin the backswing. Help😢

Ha, if only I'd known that back then. A little knowledge can be dangerous, thanks again guys for clearing all this up!
You not alone in learning to adopt that shoulder movement based on that article. We still it brought up in lessons this many years later. Has to be one of the all time misapplied bits of info on the swing.
@Athletic Motion Golf The problem with stressing shoulder turn is that the shoulders can turn without moving the rest of the body. How about showing an above head gears view on pros with a look at left shoulder, right shoulder, and center/neck point (like you've done for depth and width videos) since face-on video show illusions and don't display the 3-dimensional aspect of the movement?
We’ve done that in the past and will certainly do more of it in the future, but we also get a lot of requests to show what those 3D movements look like in traditional 2D views. We have always captured players in 3D while simultaneously capturing them in 2D. It’s super beneficial to “see” what the 3D data looks like in 2D 🤓
The sad fact is you are showing great athletic golfers producing great athletic motion to unathletic and /or old weekend warriors! Its taken me 2 yrs of strength /conditioning, and your great videos, to finally enable my back, core and most importantly my chest muscles to stretch/load whist keeping my arms soft.Yes im hitting it 20yds further but at 61 somethings gonna go soon! Just hope i shoot some sub-par rounds b4 it does!

Istill use the rope, the see-saw,the stick in handle But an old towel on the end of an old shaft and kettlebells has finally given me athletic motion!
You're basically are teaching great info. My concern is leaning towards internal cues, and who you are showing. Novice or low handicap players. Studies have shown using external cues are much more effective than internal cues when it comes to accomplished players. Where as internal cues may be more helpful for novice players. Agree?
ive been doing this over 20 years. It just depends on the person in front of you and how they can make a change. I will say this...no amount of external cues will help someone that has a bad concept.
Tried this, a lot more of a body turn but for the life of me can’t stop swaying head , my head does seem to almost recenter at the top but too much movement 🤦♂️
Does the head movement stop you making good contact with the ball? I. Struggle to keep my head still, always told to stop moving it, then I watch the pros and Rorys head is all over the place! But I don't hit it like him so I'll keep trying to stay central
Just to add: The drill you show here is great but spending a few minutes working using a foam roller or doing some T-spine mobilisation first would make it a lot easier.
As would working on correcting the internal rotation of the shoulders that you mention. You will never hit a golf ball correctly if you are not able to correctly move your shoulders when you are not hitting a golf ball. Same applies to the other main movers in the body such as the hips.
I love your stuff but I do wish you would stop repeating the stereotype about "old" golfers not having range of motion. I'm 62 and move more freely with less pain than at any time in my entire adult life. The reason is not rocket science. I simply spend a few minutes every day concentrating on improving my movement patterns. Each and every time adds a bit more range and repeated over days then months then years this ends up being transformational. The main reason people have issues moving is not age but decades of moving only in a limited way and often in the wrong way. This can be reversed. There is a clue in your name "Athletic Motion" can be trained and even if seemingly lost it can be regained. You may not get to 100% of what you were at 25 but you can for sure get a lot better. IMO all golf instruction should include basic mobility drills that simply do no more than aim to diagnose and fix basic issues that affect everything you do, not just your golf swing. e.g. if you cannot easily lift your arms straight over your head or are unable to squat with good form you have an issue that not only affects how you will hit a golf ball but how you will live your life. I think you should reach out to guys like Kelly Starrett and work with him so that your subscribers take steps towards simply being able to move freely, normally and without pain. This has to start with a positive message that, at any age, if you do little and often in terms of mobility it can make a positive change. It will make you a better golfer but also be one of the most important ways to ensure your later years lived well.
Point taken, but it's not a stereotype at all. Mobility can always be improved with the proper work, as you pointed out. But it is a physiological fact that we lose mobility as we get into our senior years. I think it's great that you've made it a point to stave off the affects of Father Time 👏

Yep, we’re all working on the same issues

What are those matching T-Shirts that say, "Sinko De Moro?" You've stumped me and Google Translate.
Sinko Se Moro = Sink Some More 😄 For our new putting training aid.
I basically stretch my chest into my right toe,obv rubbish but works for me! Seriously ive done a 101 types of turn and 101 drills and 101 home made teaching aids! Istill use the rope, the see-saw,the stick in handle But an old towel on the end of an old shaft and kettlebells has finally given me athletic motion!
I feel like I'm watching a southern version of Me n My Golf with the way yall are wearing the same thing 🤣
Looks more like a weight loss before and after to me 😂
You're basically are teaching great info.
Stick mobility! The secret to my distance gains!
i love that thing. Do you do the whole golf program ?
@@AthleticMotionGolf I do but I find any of their work outs are great on UA-cam
Tried this, a lot more of a body turn but for the life of me can’t stop swaying head , my head does seem to almost recenter at the top but too much movement 🤦♂️
Does the head movement stop you making good contact with the ball? I. Struggle to keep my head still, always told to stop moving it, then I watch the pros and Rorys head is all over the place! But I don't hit it like him so I'll keep trying to stay central
Trying feeling the right shoulder turn behind you and back towards the target. This usually corrects the head sway off the ball.
Shouldn't this drill include some spine tilt to the right?
Just to add: The drill you show here is great but spending a few minutes working using a foam roller or doing some T-spine mobilisation first would make it a lot easier.
As would working on correcting the internal rotation of the shoulders that you mention. You will never hit a golf ball correctly if you are not able to correctly move your shoulders when you are not hitting a golf ball. Same applies to the other main movers in the body such as the hips.
It surely will 👍
An old drill advocated by Jim Flick
Never seen Jim do this drill, but it's not surprising. He had some great ones.
Impressive flexibility, Mike!
You ought to show this move from the down the line view....
Too cute u wore the same shirt
bahhaha not on purpose
