This, quite frankly, is the best golf coaching video ever released on You Tube. It unlocks so much and destroys so many myths at the same time it’s remarkable. Type in ‘right elbow golf’ and see what I mean. And they’re all wrong. Wow.
Thanks for the kind words🙏🏻 Learning how the trail arm works in great swings has been one of the biggest eye openers for us. We were both taught the “keep it bent and drive it forward” move ☠️☠️☠️
@@AthleticMotionGolf same here, and attempting to do so makes it impossible to bring the hands through at the same distance from the body that they started. Which leads to all sorts of compensations, including getting stuck, casting or massive early extension with over the top. I’ve been working on right arm moves at the top and start of the downswing with a new coach, but he’s unaware that I had been taught to drive the right elbow through. Hence I’ve been unable to miss the foam noodles on the way down in one of our drills. This opens that door now, with wrist angles creating lag not a bent right elbow. He won’t have spotted this as it’s an ‘intent’ thing held over from the prior coaching rather than a visible reality. Another door we’ve opened is the feeling of the tea tray balancing on the right hand at the top creating better orientation of the elbow and right forearm. I like to see a video explaining that from there at the very start of the downswing the pro elbow goes down like you say here and thus towards the ball to target line on the plane arc, and AMs elbows move away from the ball to target line, steepening the shaft. If there is a magic move in golf, it’s that.
@@AthleticMotionGolf Thanks. Had a lesson this AM. My coach was away last weekend and I shot my best medal score last Sunday. It is not a question of what I am now doing, it’s what I am not ‘trying’ to do, and failing. I said ‘you could never have seen or known that’s what I was trying to do’. I felt released and today we worked on match ups, which are hard because it’s all new. We got to the same place you get to at the end of the video; my good swings felt slow to me, but the head speed was faster and more compressed. Advice I would give is ‘be patient from or at the top and let it happen’. Feels strange but so much better. Every shot was compressed. First time since I started swing changes in Dec.
Can you discuss about wrist flex and rotation in the swing? Particularly interested in seeing the wrist action in the swing on Gears, while everything else is static.
Good to see you guys again! What have you been up to? It’s been far too long. Hope you visit with us more often with the best golf instruction on UA-cam. Question: what’s up with that background music? I feel like I’m at a jazz nightclub!
Cool video as always guys. I love the explanation. Hopefully, people are listening because I see too many at the range trying to hold angles, and rehearsing the wrong things. I love the idea of full range, slow motion swings. I do them all the time and it definitely helps to "feel" whatever changes or tweaks I'm trying to implement at that moment. Thanks guys, you are the best!
Nice job as usual guys. On a similar bent as what you've presented is the Steve Pratt video entitled "The Crazy Swing Move That Keeps Winning on the PGA Tour" which is base on some motion capure data analysis of a PGA tour winner. This also seems to take care of closing of the club face. I'd be curious what you guys think of it.
This is not what S Pratt is advocating, he teaches throwing the club head away from the target from the top, losing any form of wrist cock; AMG are clearly showing, with the avatar, that the wrists remain cocked until far later, and this is facilitated by straightening the right arm. I would also be interested in AMG’s views on the ‘Mike Austin Method’ that Steve advocates. Surely both AMG and SP cannot be right? They appear diametrically opposed. Grateful for clarification on this conflict of philosophies.
@@thurlestonetennis2447 What I understand Steve Pratt to be saying in the video that I referenced is that if you take the body out of it, the arm motion of a particular 6 time PGA tour winner is just the motion that he demonstrates in the video which is just a quick throw of the club with the hands snapping the toe rapidly closed; this motion involves the rapid straightening of the trail arm. What AMG is showing with the avatar is WITH the body motion. So if you remove the body motion from the avatar's swing, would you have something similar to what Pratt (and Manzella) are demonstrating? I personally think that the answer is yes. I think that there is much more agreement here than one might expect at first glance.
Became a member of the AMG Academy last week. All the drills and instructional videos are really helpful. One thing that is a constant problem for me is not being able to get my hands in front of my right thigh at the delivery position. From watching your videos on You Tube, I know that the problem is most likely something I am doing wrong much earlier in the swing. I spent probably the last eight months learning from somebody whose theory on the swing was to keep your hands up in transition while rotating and keeping the hands passive. Needless to say after much thinking about the swing, I thought it seemed harmful to keep the hands and arms so passive. On video, it appears that my body is too far ahead of my arms in transition.Should I be thinking about lowering the arms in a more timely manner? I know without seeing my swing you would just be guessing, but through your videos I know ignoring the only thing that actually comes in contact with the club seems, quite frankly, crazy and flat out wrong. I hate that it took me so long to find you guys, but better late then never I always say.
Welcome to AMG! And this is a great question. When looking at the data of how great players move their arms, attempting to leave them up is one of the worst concepts to come down the pipe (as so many golfers are finding out). On average the pros are lowering their arm 24 degrees from the top to left arm parallel. Most ams are less than half that. In a nutshell, that’s why the hands are left trailing behind later in the downswing. We have a bunch of new content coming that goes heavy into this subject 🤓
@@AthleticMotionGolf I have not been able to find any that show hand speed throughout the entire swing. Also, where are you guys located if I want to make a trip and do an in-person analysis?
Another great video. Best golf instruction on YT. Could anyone help me with a question? I've been trying to insert the recentering move into the shift, turn, shift, turn concept. The first shift of 1-2" is clear, then first turn as the second shift starts into recenter, first turn over, shift two continues as turn two begins until the shift 3-4" forward, while rotating, until hands parallel which is when we post up off the left leg, ending shift, finish turn two to impact? Shift two occurs from hands parallel backswing to hands parallel downswing? Thanks.
Just feel your second shift takes back the 1-2” from your first shift by the time you reach the top. From there you can feel like you’re done shifting. The momentum and unwinding coming down will take care of the rest👍
Hey this is a fantastic video. One question. Where is the ball position relative to stance? Is it normal or off the front foot? I’m assuming you want us to move it forward and then use board just behind it? How far behind? Video angle didn’t show placement of board and ball is why I’m asking.
Im thinking many am players begin the downswing too quick and continue that thru impact thinking that quick equals speed But in your videos it actually appears that the hands and arms begin the downswing but then slow down at the bottom of the downswing allowing retention of lag and whipping or releasing of clubhead with less effort Its probably one of those feel vs real things but would like to get your thoughts
I thought i had another video playing in background with that music Boomp boomp boomp 🤣 On serious note that right elbow bend is my nemesis, if i work on it i swing well but the moment i work on something else Bang back to past 90 degrees 😔
Interesting video, I’m finding lately that I get too much lag on the downswing due to excessive wrist hinge (ulnar deviation) and I don’t have a enough time to get rid of it by impact even by extending my arms (I get a straight but very low ball flight due to too much shaft lean). Would my correction be to also feel like I’m casting my wrist on downswing (along with straightening my arms/bringing them down) or should I try to limit the wrist hinge as much as I can? Thanks 😊
Does this wipe movement of the club across the body at delivery work without the twist, motorcycle, screwdriver or whatever you want to call it with the wrist angles?
Gentlemen, in your video you did on lag and shaft lean 12 days ago, you talk about how the angles need to get released sooner rather then later in the swing. Does the right wrist stay bent till after impact or is that released too?
@@AthleticMotionGolf couple of questions. First off, let me preface my remark with I think what you guys do is awesome and ultra cool. Now in your most recent video on lag and club shaft lean you show your model golfer releasing the angle well before impact. Doesn’t that contradict this video which seems to say hold the wrist angles till just b4 impact or am I understanding this all wrong? You guys are the experts and I am a golf hack right now trying to get better, so I am just trying to understand the concept better. In The drill with the board behind the ball, I noticed that I was able to avoid the barrier and hit the ball which had me excited until I looked on video and saw that I was still casting. Is this supposed to happen 🫤?
I hesitate to comment on this because I don’t want to be picky with you guys. But I’m hoping you’ll appreciate being made aware of the error you make in describing the lag angle increasing. It’s actually (technically) decreasing, ie, number of degrees is getting lower. Following you guys for so long I’m fairly sure you’d want to know this. Mike and Shaun I’ve learned so much from AMG and can’t tell you enough how much you’ve helped me!
Please help me I am trying so hard to get my trail arm from flexing past 90 but after days of trying everything no matter what I’m bending into the 100s I can not get a feel for not over flexing past 90
Hey guys, getting a little confused watching this video. In the video that was about creating shaft lean by not trying to make shaft lean, I thought you guys said that releasing the angles rather than holding on, along with the body turn/pivot, would almost automatically create lag and shaft lean. This one sounds like you are trying to create it by holding the right wrist or getting that wrist into a certain position. Could you please clarify? Also, I know you said in another video that impact happens on the trail side of the body, it just appears to happen further forward due to camera angles, an illusion...
This is talking about how to load the trail wrist so you can have some angle during the release. The opposite of trying to hold angles through the hit.
Okay, I understand the logic behind this, sure. But I want to know why do I dump and scoop the ball, why are my hands so far behind me. Why does my hips and my body outrace my arms and hands. Even if I feel like everything is going together, my arms and hands are last thing to move.
@@AthleticMotionGolf my gut feeling is telling me that my sync is all out of whack.. but it’s an extreme scoop so I don’t know whether I’m out of sync, or just the way my hands and arms are moving incorrectly..

I'm going to go to the dollar store and get a pack of paper and put A piece of paper behind the ball hold it down with a few tees, and try my hardest not to rip the paper and it won't be loud so it's not annoying other golfers
The data in this video on lag angle and trail arm bend hasn’t changed. We’ve learned better ways teaching it since this video was shot, and yes, there is no wiping movement in good swings. Our “for the player” perspective is much better than the 2D perspective (used here) at conveying what the player is doing vs what it looks like the player is doing. I hope that addresses what you are asking. If not, I’ll be happy to take another stab at it.
@@AthleticMotionGolf Thanks for the prompt response. I wasn’t trying to be controversial just trying to ensure I understand what I should be trying to accomplish during the release which, as you’ve now confirmed, does not involve a wipe movement. Thank you.
