THIS IS HOW THE SHOULDERS/TORSO WORK IN THE SWING | Paddy's Golf Tip #6 | Padraig Harrington

  • A common misconception with the backswing is that the shoulders and hips move horizontally. In actuality, the correct motion of the shoulders is more of a pulling motion which leads the hips to turn correctly and sets the torso to open properly in the downswing.

Paddy, i can't thank you enough for these golf lessons chief. As a complete beginner (about 10 rounds on the actual course with lots and lots of hours in the range), I just broke 100 and am having so much fun after nearly giving up completely. I'd read countless books, UA-cam videos, online lessons, bought all the training aids, spent hours and hours at the range locking wrists and swinging hips, literally hurting at trying to get the ball up in the air bla bla - only to be completely disheartened at watching the 2 auld guys in front of me on the course smack the ball 30 yards further than me with half the swing and mobility and not a care in the world. It led me to look for someone that cut the crap and would help me find that loose, enjoyable golf swing and sure enough I stumbled across your channel. Watched a few of your tip vids back to back, went to the range the next day and the swoosh and feel of that first iron hit, which went 50 yards further than i'd been able to hit before EFFORTLESSLY, was nothing short of cathartic.
I can't believe you can literally get free golf lessons from a hall of famer on here that turn you in to a great golfer who can hit well and have fun and you dont have a million subcribers. I'd subscribe 1000 times if I could.
God bless ya, thank you so much for helping me relax, enjoy and fall in love with this daft wee game - next time you're in Scotland am owe you a few drams for sure!

Every time i go down the rabbit hole and find something that clicks in my swing, i come back to paddys channel and if i find something that confirms my feelings, i know I'm on the right track, if i don't, then i re watch one of paddys videos and go back to what works. Fantastic instructor, player, and person!

This is a mind blowing video for someone who’s played college and been a decent golfer but struggled with some full swing stuff over the years, self taught. The short game always saved me. This motion of push pull is genius to describe.

I could of written this comment myself. Exactly the same here. Short game is scratch level long game is 10 handicap so I find myself playing off 3-5 over the years. Such a simple description but a way I’ve never been told to think about it. Speechless.

I play to a 14.8 Hcp @64 - I have always worked on having a good shoulder turn trying to have a feeling of pulling my right shoulder up . I watched this video before playing today. Your comparison to starting a lawn mower is spot on. Played this morning and from the first tee shot on ,I was thinking "like starting a lawn mower" Drove the ball far and straight. irons were crisps and long. Had 4 birdies and played 6 over for the round .your lessons are well explained and are easy to put in to my game. Thanks

OK here goes. I am a decent golfer who shoot between mid 70’s to mid 80’s. My abilities were based mainly on compensations and eye hand coordination. I practiced these instructions for a week and a half and finally went on the course with my buddy today. Holy shit!! Is what my buddy said lol. I was on in regulation most holes and hit a couple 195 yards and 175 yards approach shots smack on the green!. My friend asked “what the heck did you do to strike the ball this well”? Lol. And I could always drive the ball better than average, however now I’m getting an extra pop and more hang time, but with distance. Sir your tips helped me so so much and I thank you sincerely. To my fellow average golfers this is what I did. I used Paddy’s grip tip which gave me more club face control, then I followed his shoulder turn instruction to the letter. That hip angle on the backswing is of utmost importance, because once there, your hips will clear NATURALLY on the down swing. I’m still working on a few other of the tips and hopefully will give a follow up when I get them into my system. Hit em straight everyone and be well.

At transition, I like to keep my back to the target, by using my left hip as a brake, which doesn't allow the potentially rotating mass, to spin out.
I feel that at transition, my arms are outracing my rotation, to the ball.
Just before impact, my body rotates and my body catches up with the arms, in order to mechanicaly connect the rotating mass to the clubhead at impact.
Most armatures do it the opposite way round, releasing the mass at transition. The arms lagging behind, which will inevitably catch up and overtake the rotating mass at impact, which means that at impact, only the mass of the arms will contact the ball.
In a nutshell, you must keep your body closed at transition and feel that you arms are falling with gravity and that they are beating the rotating mass on the downswing.
Into impact, and only then must the rotating feel like it's catching up and beating the arms, in the race to the ball.!!!!

A world class golfer. Who could become a world class coach if he cares to. Really informative lesson that can be understood by many.

I realize these are mostly about the swing, but I would really love to see a video about golf course etiquette. At many public courses, my wife and I spend a lot of time fixing ball marks. replacing divots, and raking bunkers because others can't be bothered. A good video would include the proper way to fix a ball mark, where to leave a rake after leaving the bunker (not on the down slope at the back end), and other tips on ready golf, letting faster groups play through, etc.

Great video on how the Torso works in the golf swing,But i put " loading lead shoulder in golf swing" which hopefully Padraig covers in another video! as its a massive key to good ball striking.
Tip, for me in the right arm release throw he shows, the right side release is way b4 the ball, its firing/getting to the left side(which most golfers never do!) that causes the ball to be released target side.

    Dear Paddy,
i first saw this instruction video 6 months ago. it was a break through in concept for me after years of struggling.
today i can regularly carry 160s with my 7i with good consistency and hold the green well; a huge improvement from 140s all over the fairway.
i am still working on the woods and following thru which proved to be very difficult as i am unable to keep in balance on the down swing. I lean forward too much.
Thank YOU sir for an invaluable lesson.
