This movie could've been an outright masterpiece if Disney didn't feel obligated to pander to the kiddies and make animal/gargoyle sidekicks to sell toys, among other creative concessions. You can tell this film is at its greatest during both the weird (Festival of Fools) and more serious/grandiose moments, and while the occasional spots of wry humor in the film really work, the typical goofy, comedic relief stuff Disney relies on didn't, and imo you could see the film struggling and failing to balance those two disparate tones/cinematic objectives; reining itself in sometimes when it needed to go darker in order to do the story and its themes justice.
