Everyone suddenly realized how kind and generous Whitey was, and they felt pure remorse at their horrible treatment of him over the years. Even Davey was genuinely apologetic!
It's because this is a Hanukkah movie. They're engaging in a traditional Hanukkah dance which was otberwise completely unrelated to the overall plot of the song (nobody respecting the towns friendly helpful grandpa Whitie) cause the movies writing is shit
Short version so you don’t have to watch the entire movie: the main character Davey’s parents died in a car crash when he was young and he becomes a jerk and an alcoholic. After a series of run ins with the law, he is taken in by a well-intentioned old man (Whitey) who has his hopes set on a yearly community service award. Davey mistreats Whitey at first but sees the error of his ways, and the song is him calling out the rest of the town for their ignoring/mistreatment of Whitey.

I knew Adam Sandler had an impressive range, but of everything I've researched, when Davey starts describing his own sins against Whitey that's Adam's singing voice. I'm simply blown away by how well he does.
And also the small sound effects of his shoes tapping on the ground and his hands clapping was a small but great detail that people should talk about more!

I do think in general this film absolutely sucks, but it is definitely worth watching and despite not being a *good* film, it does a great job of being a silly *bad* film and has many iconic and simply great moments. The voice acting on Adam's part is also astounding, and the music and animation is amazing. It's disgusting at times, and it's jokes do indeed blow ass, but despite it's many flaws that ultimately render it a bad film, it will always have a very special place in my heart. And I've never looked at a basketball referee the same way after watching this film.

What I found so surprisingly ironic is that one minute the townspeople was ready to send Davey up the river but moments later when Davey revealed how Whitey was mistreated over the years everyone including the Judge himself took Davey’s redemption seriously and silently relent on that 10 year prison sentence.

This has apparently been called one of the worst animated movies of all time, and yet I can't help but find myself revisiting this song despite never actually watching the movie. There's just something about this song that keeps drawing my attention
I think it’s a very good movie. I watched it when I was a kid and back then I have no idea what Hanukah is, since my country has no jewish people. I still relate to many moments in this movie.
The way Davey says "I wonder if that guy ever wiped his ass with the wrong hand" always makes me laugh, But when the guy says "Yes" I can't help but feel a little sorry for him because that's sadly one of the hazards of having a hook for a hand, Unless of course you put a cork or something over the point of the hook which that guy really should've done.

I've never seen this movie, the song just started playing randomly. I will say, though, that it's quite refreshing for a song to be about how a bunch of characters come to terms with their actions and resolve to change for the better. You don't really see that a whole lot, if ever.
The movie's worst qualities are the toilet humor. They can be semi funny depending how they're used I guess? But the constant fart and poop jokes in this movie really set it back. The singing is actually really impressive and the animation being done by the same people who made the Iron Giant is nothing but fantastic. The fact that the movie does a surprisingly heartfelt take on accepting loss and not letting it ruin who you are and to be kind to others, while both letting Christmas AND Hannukah shine in a seasonal movie is great. I genuinely think if the movie would have toned down the toilet humor, it would have been received way better.
My husband and I recently went to Adam's I Miss You Tour and that's pretty much his whole schtick: toilet humor. I think Adam is so talented in other areas but he seems comfortable with toilet humor bc it's not the 90s anymore and he's still using it.

You may have already seen it but Midnight Gospel on Netflix can be fun to watch tripping. Also if you ever get into anime, I'd recommend the series Kaiba. This series won't have anything to do with YuGiOh like some would initially think by the name alone. Kaiba is only 1 season long and it's like if the Netflix series Altered Carbon met Doctor Seuss and had a baby that dropped acid. It's absolutely psychedelic and metaphysical. The way the world works is crazy and initially confusing and it allows you to be in the same shoes as the protagonist as they start off with amnesia and have to rediscover who they are. It's also a meta commentary about what makes a person a person. Is it your body, or your memories that make you the person who you are?

@kevincloud574 I'd say we watched Wizards about a few months ago trippin and yeah, we loved it. As for the Midnight Gospel, I've only ever watched the first few episodes sober and was entertained, however I'm really bad at finished tv series. I've heard from my buddies who watched it entirely say that it gets really deep and sad by the end. I'll have to get back into it! Watched this movie when I was really really little. Rewatching all these scenes now I realize how comedic but also depressing the movie was. Definitely goes in as one of my favorite holiday movies.
I love how he talks about his own offenses first. He's not being a hypocrite, he's calling himself out as well.

This has apparently been called one of the worst animated movies of all time, and yet I can't help but find myself revisiting this song despite never actually watching the movie.
There's just something about this song that keeps drawing my attention
It has some genuinely good moments such as this. The song is silly, but full of heart and not unnecessarily crass like several others
I think it’s a very good movie. I watched it when I was a kid and back then I have no idea what Hanukah is, since my country has no jewish people. I still relate to many moments in this movie.

The way Davey says "I wonder if that guy ever wiped his ass with the wrong hand" always makes me laugh, But when the guy says "Yes" I can't help but feel a little sorry for him because that's sadly one of the hazards of having a hook for a hand, Unless of course you put a cork or something over the point of the hook which that guy really should've done.

I've never seen this movie, the song just started playing randomly. I will say, though, that it's quite refreshing for a song to be about how a bunch of characters come to terms with their actions and resolve to change for the better. You don't really see that a whole lot, if ever.

I love both to be honest with you.
The movie's worst qualities are the toilet humor. They can be semi funny depending how they're used I guess? But the constant fart and poop jokes in this movie really set it back. The singing is actually really impressive and the animation being done by the same people who made the Iron Giant is nothing but fantastic. The fact that the movie does a surprisingly heartfelt take on accepting loss and not letting it ruin who you are and to be kind to others, while both letting Christmas AND Hannukah shine in a seasonal movie is great.
I genuinely think if the movie would have toned down the toilet humor, it would have been received way better.
That the thing about this film. It really the bad film. But the singing and animation is really good.
My husband and I recently went to Adam's I Miss You Tour and that's pretty much his whole schtick: toilet humor. I think Adam is so talented in other areas but he seems comfortable with toilet humor bc it's not the 90s anymore and he's still using it.

You may have already seen it but Midnight Gospel on Netflix can be fun to watch tripping. Also if you ever get into anime, I'd recommend the series Kaiba. This series won't have anything to do with YuGiOh like some would initially think by the name alone. Kaiba is only 1 season long and it's like if the Netflix series Altered Carbon met Doctor Seuss and had a baby that dropped acid. It's absolutely psychedelic and metaphysical. The way the world works is crazy and initially confusing and it allows you to be in the same shoes as the protagonist as they start off with amnesia and have to rediscover who they are. It's also a meta commentary about what makes a person a person. Is it your body, or your memories that make you the person who you are?

As for the Midnight Gospel, I've only ever watched the first few episodes sober and was entertained, however I'm really bad at finished tv series. I've heard from my buddies who watched it entirely say that it gets really deep and sad by the end. I'll have to get back into it! As for Kaiba, I'll make sure to add it to my list and let my buddies know about it too. Safe trips to you, my friend ✌🏼🙏
