@@user-qb3gm4pu2m well no. The way I see it is, she obviously didn't go with Frollo because he was a gross old man that lusted over like an object and he was super out of her age range anyway. Then we have Quasimodo, sure he was nice to her but too nice. Almost like he put her on a high horse where she could do no wrong, so that was sort of still lusting over her in a way. Whereas Phoebus didn't do anything that Frollo or Quasimodo did. He saw her faults and cons as well as her goodness and pros, he treated her like a human and that's why she went for him.
@anonymous viewer Thank you for saying this!!! I feel that SO many authors/writers feel that if they have two characters of the opposite gender who care about one another, they MUST eventually (if not immediately) both harbor romantic feelings for one another. And even if their dynamic is more that that of siblings and one character doesn’t return those feelings, it just means that the other person just needs to work harder until the day the target of their affection magically change their mind, right? 🙄 But that ignores so much of the complexity of humans. There are so many other kinds of relationships that exist, but for some reason, fiction writers seems to think that only romantic relationships are meaningful. So instead of developing deep and dynamic relationships like that between siblings, mentors/mentees, parents/children, etc, they often awkwardly force the two characters together. Sometimes, this can even become disturbing, especially when their previous dynamic sometimes resembled that of an older sibling/guardian/parent taking care of the younger one. It just feels that it twists how I view their previous relationship from something heartwarming to something unnaturally forced, and even potentially concerning. Plus, it reinforces the idea that people (especially girls) are obligated to return romantic feelings if they are pursued by someone else, regardless of their personal feelings. Sorry, I really had to rant about this, haha. But that’s why I find works like this so refreshing. The two lead characters never became a couple, but their deep bond and care for one another remains so clear and meaningful.

I wish for Quasimodo and Esmeralda to be together, i can't appreciate that, romance means much more than friendship. what Quasi needed was a passionate romance.
@@travisboutilier2220 No, what Quasimodo truly needed was people recognizing that he's not so different, and being a "part of them" as he sung for Out There - which he earns cheerfully at the end of the film. I missed the days when Disney explored dark themes like lust, obsession, religion, violence, disfigurement, etc. without filtering them or trying to make them relatable to kids, family friendly or fantastical so they don't "traumatize the kids". A lot of themes from the classic Disney are still morally relevant today.
maybe thats why people are so soft and sensitive nowdays. Because sometimes that kind of things make us stronger and show us that part of life we don't have as childs. But if everything is so friendly and the real world problems come, than it will be no good.
People nowadays are so disgustingly sensitive. Their kids remain ignorant to a lot of lessons deemed too scandalous and mature for 'their age' and lose out. As kids we watched and remembered and learned. I pity kids today.
i always loved the fact that esmeralda doesn't immediately get things right about quasimodo; when she says "great mask", it shows how she too is caught up in the festivities and is a fallible human character, which makes her acknowledging and respecting quasimodo for who he is in the end all the more significant
I'm literally so obsessed with her hair cause it looks almost exactly like mine, and recently I've been getting self-conscious of all the little hairs that sometimes stick out or how puffy it gets so being reminded that this queen exists is very comforting to me
Demi Moore’s husky voice was perfect for Esmeralda. It compliments her strength, individuality and humanity. Filmmakers should take note when casting for animated pictures.
Yes! And I saw a video just the other day saying most often celebs are cast in voice acting roles for the movie's publicity and that they do worse jobs than real voice actors and don't fit their roles; one of them they called out was Demi Moore in this movie, even though it was just for a second. I'm like...some are clearly not great, but SHE fit the character in both acting and natural vocal tone! Judge based on each performance, not ONLY on the fact that they're celebs!
People often miss the point by being mad Quasi and Esmarelada didn’t get together. It would kinda dilute the point if she did all that for romance, that would make it seem like the power of love instead of solidarity. It would risk portraying her as predatory and Quasi has very little life experience and her considering him a boy. Her existing romance gets boiled down to getting with a handsome jock missing the star crossed lovers part and him having to make sacrifices to be with her. Also people often don’t know the public execution was successful in the book and Quasi died because he refused to leave her grave side and that’s way more traumatising
That’s a very interesting take I never thought of it like that. I think you’re right it was the right decision since she was basically motherly to him and he needed that most over romance.
20 years old is an adult, but Quazi being so sheltered most likely stunted him on an emotional level or at the very least delayed it due to how frollo wanted him to remain frightened child that was dependent on him to protect him.

Hands down one of my favorite disney movies and characters. Girlie taught me how to accept everyone around me and to to not take shit from anyone and the movie taught me that just because I showed someone basic kindness doesn't mean that person is entitled to my romantic feelings, which is honestly a lesson that should be taught to more people.
If everyone became accustomed to basic kindness in their life I’m willing to bet far fewer people would associate kindness with romantic interest simply due to its current rarity in too many lives.

I just relished they all saved each other, literally. Each of the main trio was damseled at least once. Both physically and mentally. During the last fight they all had at least one cool moment.
Esmeralda's best moment in the finale was when Frollo was looming over her and Quasimodo. She's the only thing stopping Quasi from falling to his death, having no idea that Phoebus is on his way up the tower to help them, and even when Frollo's raising his sword, she doesn't even consider letting go and saving herself.

I kind of feel bad when these females (along with Tiana) don't get much attention, as compared to other Disney princesses like Ariel or Aurora. Don't get me wrong, they deserve all the love but I've always felt more connected to girls like Meg and Esmeralda. They were really well written and given personalities other than innocent/perfect/naive.
5:17 is her *best* moment. In so many other movies to artificially squeeze extra conflict out of the situation a badly written character would turn to Quasi hurt and be all, "What's he talking about?" but Esmeralda isn't just any character. She knows there's no way in hell Frollo wouldn't be dishonest and Quasi wouldn't be loyal and his cinnamon roll self. The movie's filled to the brim with unusually complex characters, be they unbelievably likable or wicked. The only reason I can't say she's my favorite heroine is because it'll always be Belle for me, but she's the only other one that comes close.
the first comment kind of says what I was gonna say. I wasn't a big fan of this movie when I was little. When I first saw this I was a child and I was too young to appreciate it. As a kid I knew Q was a good guy but I couldn't get past his physical appearance bc I had never seen someone look like that and it freaked me out a bit. Not to mention the movie is incredibly dark and extremely horny 😂 (I always liked Esmerelda tho lol) But now as an adult I just rewatched this recently and I'm obsessed. It's an absolutely amazing film in every way (except the gargoyles being real and not in his head... Don't even get me started) and Q, Esmerelda, and Phoebus- they're all such good characters. I think only adults or teens can really appreatiate this movie, it's definitely not for kids. There's a whole song about Frollo being way too horny for Esmerelda and then he tries to burn her at the stake for not being with him... We gotta appretiate this movie, man, disney will NEVER be this dark and horny again 😂😭😭😭😭
Watching this makes me sad, Disney has fallen sooooo far. They used to be able to write fantastic female characters and their movies were for everyone.
@@queenb2450yep, because they think being a strong woman is just doing everything a man typically does and not embracing femininity and also being strong and confident. They treat being loving and kind hearted as weaknesses and not beautiful strengths.
I'm currently rewatching it now. Besides the animation, which I find to be, for the most part, more timeless than the recent CGI style, this movie achieved in many areas without trying too hard and it's an admirable kind of appreciation.
Sometimes I understand that argument, but then isn’t it the same as saying anyone of color can’t be sexy? Is sexy and adventurous such a bad thing to be as a woman of color? I think it’s exciting and empowering
@@jessefulton8841 Honestly i think the original comment was just joking, but i got exactly what you mean. There is NO problem about a woman being "fine" and loving her own body. Esmeralda is beautiful, sensual and fine, but she has MUCH MORE than this. You don't see people saying "omg i love Esmeralda because she has a fine body", no, you see people admiring her kindness, her strength, her talents and her compassion. Being beautiful and sensual are just one of her qualities. She is not an object, she is a strong, kind woman that feels free about her own body. If you get so upset with a sensual woman despiting all of her qualities, then the problem is on YOU and not her. I never saw anyone commenting about "how much Ariel is fine and unnapropriate for children" for example, but when a woman is dark-skinned, then she can't be fine? Just let women be free and beautiful they way they WANT! Am i right?
Hey I just noticed how Esmeralda seeing Quasi for the first time - doesnt react as shes so scared, nor she even widens her eyes or something…just stares at him. And smiles. What a wonderful reaction, seeing someone that different. Love it ❤
Well no one else except Esmerelda really knew what Quasimodo's worst struggles were while facing the crowds on the street, she could tell lots of it was causes by Frollo's abuse done to him, not Quasimodo's own thinking. It's thanks to her Quasimodo was able to learn what he did at the end.
My grandmother was a gitana "gypsy" from the Mountains of Andalucia, her parents Morrocan immigrants in Spain. Esmeralda reminds me so much of her; the strength of her spirit, the untamed beauty if which she spoke, I miss you grandma
Quasimodo: Heaven's light Frollo: Hellfire Phoebus: What a woman! No shade to Quasi, but when you look at it, Phoebus is the only one of the three who sees her as a person.

A character detail that I feel is underated: she could've simply run off undetected after the smoke trick that Frollo called "witchcraft", but she stayed and let the guards know she was still there just so she could humiliate them and Frollo in front of the crowd.
Esmeralda was having the time of her life in that scene. She stuck around to entertain the crowd, humiliate Frollo, and have fun. This Esmeralda is an adult but in the original story, she was 16 and that does seem like the sort of thing a rebellious teenager would do.
Being roma myself and seeing people who love Esmeredla and celebrate her as the awesome character she is makes me so happy she's one of my favorite Disney characters and characters In media :)
Because she's shown like a good person embracing her culture (the clothes, nomadic lifestyle, fortune telling, music, dancing) and not stealing, forbidding her children from getting educated and living in filth.
Frankly, the whole romanticization of Princesses should stop period. After Diana's death, you'd think people would have stopped. Its a horrible life for most of them. Privileged prisoners.
@@justinwilliams7290 While I agree with your assessment of princesses' lives, I don't think it's practical or even correct to say all romanticizing should stop. Princesses are one of the oldest archetypes in stories. Maiden, mother, and crone, king, warrior, magician, and lover, were never intended to be realistic depictions of their respective duties. They are ideas. Princesses represent purity, kindness, and courage. It is through the personification of these ideas that we see the result of their influence on the world. The problem is people romanticizing real people, of any role. Would I ever want to be a real princess? No. But I also know that archetypal princesses and real princesses are not to be conflated. I only aspire to have the same strength of heart and mind as the archetype.
Meh… not impressed at all, actually. Had she been a queen, she would have chosen the real man- Quasi. He was not worshipping her, he was totally in love with her, and he would have loved her even after she will have helped him to see that she is not a goddess, but a mere woman. That scene where she is with Prince Charming and takes Quasi by the hand out of the shadow? That’s bullshit. If she were a real queen, she would have walked on that bloody stage with Quasi at her side, and proclaimed so- ‘I am your queen, and Quasi is my king. All those who made fun of him- starting with you, Phoebus- form a line to kiss his arse. Actually, no. You don’t deserve that. Kiss my goat’s arse. Or you will be one head short’. @@claudiamanta1943 He did not worship her? Quasimodo outright calls her an angel. And she does. Just not in the same way he thinks of her. Quasi wants so very badly to be loved, yet he only learns how to love in return when he respects her choice. Just because you make sacrifices for someone (all of which Esmerelda does for him with NO expectations), that doesn't mean they owe you their love. No it's the strong ones like Esmerelda who are the least understood, it's the strong females like her who get rudely mocked a lot in real life too. Wise / brave / strong / Cautious true heroines are underrated repeatedly, but Esmerelda accepted what she couldn't change about the country and had enough real courage to choose how to help Quasimodo, she was able to realize lots of his daily struggles weren't his fault but they were the consequences of how Frollo treated him.
Since I've seen THON for the first time she's been one of my fav Disney women! She really is unique, underrated and independent. Disney was so much better when they weren't scared of making dark movies even if they were for kids for example (The Incredibles) that is a masterpiece!
The Incredibles was made by Pixar, not Disney. Besides, Disney didn't even own Pixar yet and only distributed their movies til 2006 when they bought Pixar
I can watch this over and over again and will never get bored. Esmeralda is such a role model for me, she was always one of my favorite Disney heroines.

Esmeralda was a huge influence in my personality. When I first saw this movie as a kid/almost teenager, I fell in love with her strong sense of justice, bravery, kindness and compassion. I think she's the best female character of all time.
I think she is. Not a 'princess' princess, but an official Disney Princess. There was a doll of her in 2004 if I remember correctly, or something like that.
Out of each of the actresses that has voiced the Disney heroines, it has to be said that Demi Moore achieves a real depth and variety in her performance that utterly crowns the sheer talent of the art and animation that goes into her character. Her voice is enchanting and intriguing.
I think Quasi and Esmeralda is more of a brother and sister relationship then a romantic one as portrayed in the movie. The reason I say that because Quasi always looked out for her as a sister and Esmeralda seen him as a human, not as a deformed monster, which is why I love her character a lot

@Chris This topic is delicate stuff.I Loved Esmeralda since i was 3 years old and this character influenced a lot in the woman i'm now but that doesn't justify the cultural apropiation that I Would be doing if I treat her way of dress as a costume because a lot of Romaní women suffer discrimination just for wearing them and is disrepectfull ASF.If you wear something that belongs to a opressed etnicithy wear It whit respect (I wear a Dikhlo eventually because I now the meaning of It and my religion believes in the original meaning of wearing it and because respect the culture) or not wear It at all! Btw Sorry for my english Im from Spain i just Hope i made my point clear.
@Chris It doesn't matter if you do it for making fun or not,the point is that a romaní woman that wears her traditional jewerly and dikhlo every day in her normal Life suffers discrimination for It that goes from social discrimination to legal discrimination and if you put that kind of clothes, jewerly and dikhlo only for Halloween and without knowing anything about that culture or respecting It its a shame an disrepectfull and there is no discussion there.A romaní woman can be insulted at the street if she wears her indumentary while a girl that dresses herself as a "romaní" for Halloween Will no suffer anything and Will just do It for "fun" or because is "cool" ignoring all the suffering, judge and represion behind It.
Idk,I think a culture is not something that you can put and take off as a costume,it's just privilege and I think that you have to get inform and respect the culture if you are going to wear something that is their traditional stuff.I mean,I wear a dikhlo and long earrings a lot of days because of religion and the level of judge that I confront is insane, and I am not romaní,just a witch born in Spain, imagine the level of judge romaní women are expose to just for be an dress.I think is a matter of individual respect to not dress a culture at a costume.
@Chris You can dress at anything at Halloween: A vampire,a Ghost,a Bat,a Spider, any Office of the world...there are so many things that are not offensive for any culture! Btw we have diferents point of view but remember that discussions doesn't afect the same to all people, maybe for you and for me this is a simple debate but for an actual romaní or any other etnicithy this can be a realy threatening debate so we have to make sure that we are listening to the actual people that are affected by this yo revisate our privilege everyday. :)

But that ignores so much of the complexity of humans.

Kids stories should be darker, of course there should be a balance so you don’t traumatize them, but they should be darker

Exactly!
Also in the book their skeletons are found years later, with Quasi's embracing hers...
And Phoebus didnt love her instead betrayed her

It's an absolutely amazing film in every way (except the gargoyles being real and not in his head... Don't even get me started) and Q, Esmerelda, and Phoebus- they're all such good characters. I think only adults or teens can really appreatiate this movie, it's definitely not for kids. Being beautiful and sensual are just one of her qualities. She is not an object, she is a strong, kind woman that feels free about her own body. If you get so upset with a sensual woman despiting all of her qualities, then the problem is on YOU and not her.

I've always loved how the animators drew his side eye expression right when he says that. I love details like that.
@@anthonyguarino4242 That's a great bit of writing. You can't say "bitch" in a Disney movie so most writers simply wouldn't write a character who uses that language. These writers made it clear that Esmeralda DOES use that language but she holds back whilst in a house of God. It's also implied that she doesn't necessarily believe in God but she still respects the Church.
I love her.
She has such a pretty design, I could listen to her talk for hours, and she’s and amazing person
Esmerelda is so beautiful, I wish I had deep black hair like hers. I also love that end scene in the song where he says what makes a monster and what makes a man. 🥲
Her green eyes... they look like two jewels, she's so perfect 😣😣💚
@@mieshocked1450 she is really pretty. 😍
@@thediamonddragon1369 Thanks, it's a fanart of "Samara Morgan/The Ring" made by Dollheart. I found on DeviantArt.
She is more beautiful inside.
@@anothergg2692 I think she's an example of someone beautiful inside and out
One of the very few positive depictions of Roma women in animated history.

I love how he just rambles on and she just kisses his cheek, he got so smitten 😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Re-watched this movie a few weeks ago and honestly I just appreciate it more. She being 78% reason why I love it. Total queen
She’s amazing. So much personality and a sense for justice.
People speak about the old Disney 'princesses' being weak and such, but a lot of them were just getting by with what they had. Like Cinderella, she wasn't weak, she managed to keep a kind and loving soul even with all the abuse she endured.
Esmeralda and Meg have got to be some of the best female Disney characters. There such girl bosses and extremely underrated
SHE A BADDIE
2:05 YUP SHE IS
**Phoebus not at all bothered that he was nearly decapitated:
*What a woman!*
I love Disney's version of Phoebus! Other versions are generally players, but he loves her strength and capability.
She is not underrated she’s fabulous and great.
I like that Esmerelda shares her earrings with her goat
She's like Animals are people! Animal rights! And we love it
She is the GOAT 😏
To put it in Phoebus’ words: what a WOMAN
Since I've seen THON for the first time she's been one of my fav Disney women! She really is unique, underrated and independent. Disney was so much better when they weren't scared of making dark movies even if they were for kids for example (The Incredibles) that is a masterpiece!
The Incredibles was made by Pixar, not Disney. Besides, Disney didn't even own Pixar yet and only distributed their movies til 2006 when they bought Pixar
@@valenzuelasstudios1838 Yes I know, I forgot, I'm sorry :).
@@cynderot0275 it's fine
I love this movie so much. Esmeralda taught me stand up for what’s right and to be unafraid in it. Demi’s voice acting was perfection.
1:35 This solidified my appreciation of her
That’s her spirit animal.
2:40 I love that expression 😂😂😂 Our Queen deserves better 😔💕
The only Disney heroine who was the love interest for three main characters. Exquisitely animated, and voiced by Demi Moore in her prime!
Esmeralda is truly such a wonderful woman and an inspiration! I love her so much! ❤
God, I still believe she is the most beautiful Disney character we've gotten. Also, her whole attitude in general is just perfect
I can watch this over and over again and will never get bored. Esmeralda is such a role model for me, she was always one of my favorite Disney heroines.
1:54 rip the guy in the crow cage 💀
"i'm free, i'm free! ... dang it!"
She’s always my favorite Disney character! Thank you for the video!
A disney QUEEN with the most beautiful, selfless song ever sung in a disney film. Even now, she's my hero.
I'm so happy the disney version gives her redemption.

Esmeralda: The only fool I see is YOU!
Clip from Friday: DAAAAAAMN!!
Bro I love her so much, just pure bless. When she sang and prayed for her people instead of asking for something from God, I cried
Esmeralda was a huge influence in my personality. When I first saw this movie as a kid/almost teenager, I fell in love with her strong sense of justice, bravery, kindness and compassion. I think she's the best female character of all time.
Truly an icon
I'm sure you'd know
Get over it
Aren’t you dead? Lol!
She deserves to be a princess
I think she is. Not a 'princess' princess, but an official Disney Princess. There was a doll of her in 2004 if I remember correctly, or something like that.
@@gneurshk_ yes but it couldn't be sold like other princesses and the movie had some matured scenes
Out of each of the actresses that has voiced the Disney heroines, it has to be said that Demi Moore achieves a real depth and variety in her performance that utterly crowns the sheer talent of the art and animation that goes into her character. Her voice is enchanting and intriguing.
2:25 no swearing 🤬 in church. ⛪️
That true
Pretty clever
One second, one moment, *bows* WE. LOVE. ESMERELDA
I think Quasi and Esmeralda is more of a brother and sister relationship then a romantic one as portrayed in the movie. The reason I say that because Quasi always looked out for her as a sister and Esmeralda seen him as a human, not as a deformed monster, which is why I love her character a lot
Well i think Quasimodo and Esmeralda should be a romantic relationship, a brother and sister relationship is pathetic.
Exactly, i hate how people think a woman and a man relationship must always be romantic. Their friendship was beautiful.
@@DS-gf2vn Yes it should be romantic.
@@moonamoonz Don't be so hateful.
@@travisboutilier2220 How am i being hateful??
Esmeralda is more than a strong woman, a soldier and a girlboss. I’m not quite sure what she is, but she is certainly something and that something is magical
I'm dressing up like Esmerelda this Halloween and I am so excited!
Umm no it’s not a costume
We’re an ethnicity not a joke
I love her so much, she's so cool ♡
Her warmth, bravery and charisma make her an icon.
I love her. She is one of the best characters
Hunchback is the crowning achievement of 90's era Disney ... It's only underrated because it explored themes too dark for kids. Visually and sonically it's the most stunning movie. And Esmeralda is such a complex character, a realistic woman, beautiful in every way.
I saw this movie again a couple of days ago and all the characters blew me away, including her. I've got no words to express how awesome Esmeralda is, she is just everything.
5:37 Esme had the rawest "Get f***ed" face of _any_ Disney heroine, & I have fortified this hill.
Uh, yeah, if you can call it that
Arguably one of Disney’s best female character designs.
I love how shes always snapping back at everyone.
"Seems like we crowned the wrong fool."
"Oh really? You missed a spot."
*spits in frollos face*
I just love her 😂
Esmeralda is one of those memorable characters that you can't replace.
1:21 she is a true beauty and she's a pure hearted girl
You mean woman
Not only she was beautifully animated, but Demi Moore also did a great work voicing her❤
No one is talking about the duo esmeralda-clopin ? XD two charismatic characters full of purpose and potential
