    INFORMATION ABOUT CIRS:
I mentioned Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) in the video and how exposure to toxins (when combined with a genetic predisposition) can make it much harder for people to get relief from symptoms, even following a Carnivore Diet. If you aren’t healing and feeling MUCH better after six months of eating this way, I would encourage you to look into other possible causes.

If you think you have CIRS, but you aren’t able to afford the treatments, eating a carnivore diet while also getting extra sun exposure and eating omega 3s (seafood!) does help some people to feel relief from symptoms. Removing yourself from an environment with mold and avoiding excess environmental and dietary toxins is never a bad idea, but I know it’s not always an easy fix. And if none of that gets your symptoms to go away, PLEASE know that there are ways to make the Shoemaker protocol more doable. THERE IS HOPE, and you don't have to be a millionaire to find healing by using this protocol. ❤

Haha, I know what you mean about surviving a famine, I'm the same. In the last 72 hours I ate some chicken with lots of fatty skin and a large fillet of barramundi...my blood glucose was still around 4.8 this morning. I'm one of those who gains or doesn't lose & stalls out if I eat too much meat. I'm a 5-year Carnivore and it took me years to get the same results as others got in 6 - 15 months. I could never figure out why. After about 3 years I finally figured it out. In my liver, Gluconeogenesis runs too agressive and for too long. So if I eat more that 1 pound of meat at a time (any kind) my Glucose goes off the scale like I'm eating sugar. Gluconeogenesis is doing exactly what it should, it's just too much for my body. I also have chronic Pancreatitis so I'm always fighting that too. Now that I've reduced the amount of meat per sitting, I've dropped weight like it's nothing. 245 down to 168 in just the past year once I figured out how much to eat at once. I used to eat 18-22 oz Ribeyes and huge plates of roast & ribs and everything I could afford. I saw a lot of folks eating 2-3 pounds of meat a day so that's what I did. It never worked for me until I made these changes. Find what works for YOU and go with it.
The good news for me is that I've reversed Type-II Diabetes, Insulin Resistance & Metabolic Syndrome. My A1C was 10, now it's 5. Glucose was 150-225. now it's 85-95. So I'm very happy with that. I'm no a longer Type-II diabetic. The main problem I always has was weight loss, until we figured it out.
Great video here today Kelly! So glad to see you have Dr. Bikman on today! I take any opportunity to listen to him speak. Thanks Kelly.

How many pounds of meat do you now eat per day

    • @LifeByKpop
      @LifeByKpop Рік тому +38

@@lorenamcgovern I try to keep it around a pound of beef per day. But, I eat TMAD. Breakfast is usually about 4 eggs and a nice pile of breakfast sausage patties, about 4. 😁 So not a lot in the morning. My second meal is usually about 3-4 in the afternoon and I usually have two 1/4 pound burger patties, with maybe some Liverwurst, a couple of eggs or some Italian sausage or even Italian meatballs. I like to mix it up. But I just have to keep the total meat at about a pound a day. I get by on that just fine. A pound a day is roughly 75g of Protein for the day and that puts me right where I need to be. You'll find your sweet-spot too. It just takes time. Make adjustments, go for a week or two and see what happens. Change it again if you need to. And if you're new, use a app like Carb Manager to figure out your Macros that work for you then you can leave it behind once you know what you need to know. Best of luck in your journey Loren!

Dr Bikman, I understand your hesitation, but as a menopausal woman I went years without losing weight. I wasn't overweight, but gained 15 lbs at the start of menopause. Coming from a bodybuilding background I knew exactly what I was eating, and I didn't have fasting insulin problems or fasting glucose problems. But after lots of work I realized I am more sensitive to protein. By switching to smaller protein at a meal and higher fat (80/20) I FINALLY lost the 15 lbs. It was really frustrating for my own doctor and all the carnivore and keto influencers out there to suggest I wasn't actually eating what I should or was lying about it. Adding cold fat, not hot, and eating 3 meals a day with no more than 28 grams of protein a day is what did the trick.

I feel like the effect of hormonal upheaval in menopause is overlooked or ignored. I’m going through the menopause transition and have been having a similar experience. I track my nutrition and exercise and this 8kg of weight I’ve gained in the past year just won’t budge. I’ve been Keto for 7 years and carnivore for about 5 months. My hormones are all over the place and I suspect this is the cause.

Long-term fasting may not be a good idea for older women. That's because they usually do not have lots of muscle or a very high metabolic rate to begin with, and one reason they have a problem losing body fat. Also, long term fasting has been shown to reduce metabolic rate, diminish muscle mass, as well as mess up other biological processes like thyroid as well.
You rarely hear of the downsides of long term fasting, so have an open mind and don't purposely starve yourself for too long, too often. We have no instinct to go hungry and instincts are good for us. We have them for a reason.
I would say it would be a lot smarter to build muscle instead of starving yourself, just my thoughts.

I have been skeptical of Ben Bikman despite his obvious knowledge as he didn't seem to accept that in many people (hello perimenopausal women...like me) that insulin spiking through eating meat was extreme enough to cause weight gain. I am one of those who adhered to a carnivore diet strictly for 6 months and put on fat. So valuable to hear him admit and explain this, though I think its a lot more common than he realises. I had no clue what carnivore, fasting, TRE, ketones, or anything else meant. I just started eating meat because that is what I liked. Suddenly, weight started peeling off, I was less tired, better at work, and able to be more active. Eating meat is so much more simple than buying, cooking, storing, and throwing away vegetables and fruit. I have lost 130 lbs so far in about 15 months. Only another 100 to go. I believe we have a NATURAL weight, and that natural weight is one that is easy to maintain, but doing nothing extreme, like over or under eating. That said I've been eating sardines this weekend and I am AMAZED at how my body tolerates them and have curbed "cravings" its like my body is finally receiving the CORRECT nutrition it needs to function. Something so simple as finding the right food for your body, has only taken me 48 years! Eat to live, don't live to eat.

5 years ago I Lost about 50 doing low carb. But after a while I plateaued. That plateau lasted a long time. I finally gave up and started
Eating some carbs and exercise. No weight lose but eventually started gaining. I would start keto again and still couldn’t get below 184. Tried WW, didn’t work. After three years still no success. I’m losing now. Why? I think it is because I started drinking wine after losing about 40 pounds. I figured wine was low carb, and shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve been carnivore for two months now and I am losing again @173 this morning. Something about alcohol is not good for me, even though there are few carbs.

That makes sense! Alcohol is a toxin and the body will prioritize burning it so it is cleared from the body as fast as possible. Burning body fat takes a back seat until the alcohol is cleared. And if not sufficiently fat adapted I imagine it might be quite a set back to get back to fat burning and only establish a cycle of never fat burning if the person is a regular consumer of alcohol

I had this problem all the while my High blood sugar and other labs improved dramatically month by month. I finally asked for a fasting insulin. It was 19!!!!! 😱 No wonder I wasn't able to loose weight for all my efforts over 30 years. I am loosing very slowly but my understanding is that it will take a while for my insulin regulation to normalize. No matter what I put in my mouth my insulin (pancreas) over reacts. I will cut back on meat and look forward to more healing and balancing. Weight loss is no longer my goal. I now focus on attaining Metabolic Health.

Wow, Kelly! I've followed many fantastic interviews, made lots of notes, been Ketovore over a year, but this is THE most INCREDIBLE interview I've come across.
I had hit a plateau as a 76 healthy woman, on no medications, to lose 10 or so pounds. I simply reduced my volume of food (calories), still being careful of adequate fat to less protein,
and the fat is melting off.
Wonderful to hear Dr Bikman espousing the same principle when one hits a fat loss plateau, inspite of eating low carb.
    🥰🥰🥰

It was very helpful to hear a Q&A that addresses the frustration of doing everything right w/o weight loss success. Social media is full of thin people telling you what to do to look like them. Sometimes the lack of success points to genetics and I appreciate hearing that message. It's great to have improved health markers but it's also understandably desirable to look like you're healthy. Thanks for the message on these authentic struggles for many people.

Absolutely right - It took almost 5 months on carnivore to lose a few pounds. It's essential to know your macros, to tweak them as needed, and each individual is different. So many - even doctors - are telling us " eat all the meat you want, you cannot gain weight". Once I changed the macros, (too much protein) the weight is melting off. 16 lbs. in about 5 weeks. You really have to pay attention to the ratios, and adjust as necessary. It's still the easiest and simple way of eating, and of course, delicious and satisfying. I'll never go back to the SAD. Kelly, thank you for your informative videos, and troubleshooting for those of us who were not having success at the start.

I am one of those people who has been eating this way for a couple yrs now, & lost absolutely zero weight until just recently. While I'm still not completely certain what the issue was, this conversation surely gave me some things to consider. I did the typical switching up of fat to protein macros, various forms of fasting, less/more exercise, etc~ & gave each change at least several weeks to a few months. I also happen to be 4 yrs post-menses, so whichever stage a person wants to consider that- be it menopausal or post menopausal. Folks differ on the terminology.
That being said, it seems to me that it's primarily my life-stage peers who have the most stubborn time of it w/fat loss. I cannot say why I suddenly started seeing body re-comp changes, even before any actual weight loss, yet I went down a size in clothing. About a month later- last month- the scale started moving, & I'm down 15 lbs or so. Still have another 25 to go, but I would not trade any of the other benefits/healing/quality of life I've gained for any amount of fat loss at this point. Took me 2 yrs to accept & be able to say that & mean it...most days. =)

Update; after reading through the comments here- & some specific prayer- I believe a few things mentioned most likely applied, & still apply to my situation. Cutting out all sweet tastes, keeping protein lower than fat at any meal, & keeping my metabolism guessing have surely helped get the scale moving. I also believe I had/still have much internal healing to do, despite no official diagnosis. Just because I couldn't see it or feel it does not mean things were all good.
🎯This channel has some of THE BEST comments shared I've seen yet~ so truly helpful, & inspirational~ Thank you all!💡

Love your name, full timer here. I have been struggling with these same issues, got stuck after 60 pound loss on keto. I have not been consistent the last 3-4 months but going to try carnivore for a few months and see where it takes me, oh and 62 here so same struggles. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid 5 years ago but weened myself off meds last 3 years. New Dr. Was asked to test so she did tsh and said fine.

    • @RV-there-Yet
      @RV-there-Yet 10 місяців тому

@@ramblinrozz2242 Excellent to hear you're off meds & test was fine~ yay! Carnivore is what finally (helped) to get un-stuck. I had a hard time w/sweet cravings on keto, but after I went meat only, AND managed to get my fat intake up, the sweet tooth started to fade. For me, the fat was super important~ & if I do get a sweet craving, I eat frozen browned butter, bacon, or chew on a salt rock~ all 3 work for me, so does plain yogurt or whipped cream w/a little vanilla. That's probably the most important thing I've learned, not to be dogmatic about "rules" & really make carnivore your own. It's the only way for many of us to make it sustainable & continue to reap the many benefits of this way of eating. It truly is life changing, & I never thought I'd say that about food- of any sort. At this point, the mental health & clarity of mind have taken the top slot over the weight loss- though I've lost another 15 lbs. Waking up feeling this good every day is a joy I've been missing my whole life I think, & I couldn't be more grateful.=) Maybe we'll see you out there Rozz~ & feel free to continue this chat, or email if you'd like. We're still holed up in the heat & summer storms here in NV so plenty of time on my hands~ Sam🙋‍♀

Y'all, I've made a list from this comment section and several others of things that people have done to successfully break a weight-loss stall:
    1) eat less protein at a sitting (no more than 25-30g) while keeping fat high.
    2) a sardine fast (other types of fish may also work).
    3) a fat fast (just butter, tallow, cod livers, maybe some pork belly, heavy cream and egg yolk custard, that kind of thing).
    4) truly make sure you're getting enough electrolytes. You may need more of one than other people require. Experiment with more salt, you may be a "salt-waster."
    5) get SERIOUS about your circadian rhythm. Poor sleep increases insulin resistance.
    6) cut out all dairy.
    7) cut out all caffeine: coffee (even decaf), tea (even green), diet sodas, chocolate.
    8) cut out all artificial flavorings, yes, even La Croix and LMNT.
    9) get (much) more sunlight on (much) more skin.
    10) cut out any meat that isn't from a ruminant.
    11) cut out all zero-carb sweeteners. They may be confusing your pancreas.
    12) supplement with iodine.
    13) supplement with boron.
    14) OMAD or alternate day fasting or prolonged fasts. Basically, fasting.
    15) your body may be protecting you from heavy metals stored in your fat cells. Chelate out the heavy metals, and your body will be willing to release the fat. (People use raw egg yolks for this?)
    16) the last and hardest - lower your stress. Yoga, breathing, meditation, etc., are all good, but often the real issue is a bad job or a bad relationship that may need to be let go.
These are things that people have done to successfully break their weight stalls. I am not recommending any of them in particular, and I'm certainly not recommending that anyone try ALL of them at once, I'm just reporting what people have said.
If some of these resonate with you, they might be worth doing more research into.

Kelly, you are talking about me as far as 50+ women only eating either ketovore or carnivore for over a decade. I also have a max bench of between 225-247. All of my numbers, including deep thyroid tests, are healthy. A1C is 5.5. I workout 6-days per week INTELLIGENTLY. That means cardio only 15 minutes to prevent cortisol, and heavy weightlifting. I only eat eggs, tons of butter because of Dr. Elizabeth Bright, steak, hard cheeses, heavy cream. I hate vegetables and fruit. I also have had chronic diarrhea for months now. So, I went off of carnivore and keto for a few weeks. Nothing changed except some water weight gain, so I went back to carnivore. I've never been afraid of fat. I was always lean and athletic so this has been such a source of frustration for me. The way I lift weights, I don't think I can over eat, but even do, I've done OMAD, 2MAD, on 4 eggs twice per day. NOTHING works! I only like fatty cuts of meat. Fowl is BORING to my palette. This doc does what all of these folks do. He thinks we are eating nothing but chicken when I've snacked on a pat of butter wrapped in salami. I gained 20 lbs. after having severe Long COVID and all of my strength bounced back, but this weight gain has been impossible. I don't recognize myself anymore. I also live alone so there is nothing in my house that has carbs. I don't buy them. So cheating isn't even possible. I'm going to try the butter diet. This makes me so mad. I can beat most men in the gym with my strength. My hormones are all at normal levels. The only weird thing is this mystery diarrhea that nobody can explain. I'm getting a referral for a gastroenterologist. But give me a break! Just before COVID, I took a photo of my gorgeous muscular flat abs. I'm eating less carbs than I was back then! The fat is in weird new places too. It looks like I have a 4-pack and a fanny pack! I'm used to bigger thighs and bottom when I gain, but never this much weight when eating this strictly, and never in my abs.

same age range and probs as you with belly fat I never used to have, I got rid of all dairy except butter, and 3 meals a day to keep my protein in smaller amounts at a sitting and the 15 lbs has come back off. I also avoid lunch meats, they bring back hormonal acne for me, and about a lb of water weight. My IBS completely left when I got the last of the one or two low carb veggies and the cheese out of my diet.

Heal your diarrhea. Try probiotics of the highest quality, made especially for the colon. Have you been on an antibiotic for the long covid? After a week, the bowel climate should normalize. Once you are back on track with your bowels you can start shifting portion sizes, fat, or even try walking or cardio for longer time to address weight. This is what helped me. Also, see if there are stressors in your life beyond food and exercise that may be triggering your issues and do your best to understand what these outliers are, and then make the corrections. Small changes, big results.

I have my suspicions about heavy cream causing issues with strange fat deposits in my own body, because it's so hard to find pure cream for my one cup of coffee that doesn't have Carageenan or other thickening or stabilizing agents in it (many are derived from algae and seaweed). It's also in a number of other dairy products and commercial nut milks that I used on other eating plans in my past. I have come to believe that half & half (no stabilizers) would be better for me even with 1g carbs for 2 Tbs in my coffee each morning because it's pure milk and cream without any additional junk, instead of cream with these additives.
