Weil McLain CGA6 Natural Gas Boiler Installation

  • So last week, we brought the old American Standard 199k BTU (gross) single zone boiler back to life. House was recently bought and almost done with renovations. Of course, the 40 year old boiler works so why replace it, right? Wrong! When we resurrected the boiler, we did a combustion test. Very high CO and told client consider replacing it or, not recommended, major cleaning and overhaul. Not cost effective. Limited basement staircase clearance meant a WM CGa6 instead of the typical Burnham ES26. Watch as we take out and install the replacement. Appreciate the feedback. Ray Moran The install manual shows the pump on the bottom....seems like the company that built the boilers should know where to put it.....
They have the top position as an alternate......I have seen pumps right on top of the boiler also which is problematic. Because if you have to pull the pump you have possible water infiltration......unless plenty of towels are available........

True but there we 3 techs so it is 12 man hours A lot of contractors can not land a party that size on one job, in my State even that small amount of electrical work would require a separate trade electrician and an inspection. Most town inspectors would fail it on the lack of isolation with the pump in my area. Some may even want to see a pressure test with that small amount of gas piping. Respect the work here, but we all play by different rules.

I had that happen before with Weil McLain boilers before where my supply piping came out on an angle. Can’t remember if it was oil or gas. I liked the placement of the expansion tank. When it fails it will be a easy change out. So many times there 7 feet off the ground directly above the tankless coil piping or burner. Drop that tank and forget it your day is ruined 🤦‍♂️ I got a critique hard to tell from video on the size of house and how many cast iron radiators but generally I go with a number 60 but have done 30s also on smaller homes. Happy new year’s guys🍻

A little electrical info: the transformer above the old fuse box was most likely for the clock portion of the old setback thermostat (very common back then). The existing BX cable is technically AC cable (armored cable). If in good condition and properly terminated, it is an approved grounding means. The silver wire is Tinned copper. The tin stops the sulfur in the old rubber insulation from corroding the copper wire.

Here in Florida we call it MC for metal clad cable. Also down here the only approved means of ground happens with the MC that has A green parallel line painted on the outside of the MC and contains a bare ground wire throughout it.. The Cladding does not serve as a ground. How do you know thats tinned copper, just curious? IF it was aluminum we would have to do a remediation on it and add alumicons to the joints, here in Florida and for the insurance companies approval.

I still have a mechanical setback thermostat on my steam system. Honeywell Chronotherm. It's staying when I install the new Burnham Megasteam. Best thermostat for a steam system ever. Adjustable magnet for the bimetal so it can be calibrated in place. Mine is the art deco style with the clock on the side. Wired with 4 wire armored thermostat cable. Have the original Honeywell clock transformer powering it. Inside it has a dial with 2 hands for setting the setback times. I also have a nearly identical fuse box with a separate 0.5a fuse for the clock transformer. It's staying as well. I rewired it with modern plastic insulated MC cable.

Something I haven't seen on youtube but was my late father's idea. If you want to super flush a radiator . Change the bleeder to 1/4 or 1/8 ball valve with a flex supply line. Close the return to the boiler and the radiator . Increase the pressure to the prv and open your new bleeder valve and see 50 years of muck come out of the radiators. I've been meaning to post a video. The radiator gets so toasty

Great job! For your edification: you are using MC (metal clad) cable and not AC (armored clad), also known as BX by an old trade name. MC is distinguished by its green equipment ground, which AC doesn't have. The steel armor of the AC cable functions as the equipment ground, while the (typically) aluminium cladding of the MC is not considered an equipment ground. It's likely that you were using the MC lite variety in this video, which definitely has an aluminum cladding. Importantly, set screw connectors are not to be used on this type of cable, due to it's thin and fragile nature. Instead, use snap-in or combo connectors with MC.

Also needs anti-oxidant compound (noalox) if wire nuts are not already pre-filled with the "goop". Do not wire aluminum wires directly into switch or receptical unless it is specifically rated for aluminum wire. Needs a transition to copper with pigtail first in most cases.

Should clean all cut copper for press learned hard way cut rubber on 2" in a pain in the ass spot no room. I also mark edge with sharpie so if fitting moves you notice especially on bigger pipe. Do you use any offsets they make the impossible possible on tight ass spots for crimping.

If you have a good chimney it’s always better for the customer to use a cast iron boiler. The customer will use more gas but the overall costs and longevity will be better with an “old fashioned “ boiler.

Monoflow tees should be spaced the same spread as the emitters. Example: 5 foot baseboard, tees 5 ft apart.

Looking for new & simple direct vent (no chimney) gas boiler (80% efficiency is fine) that has best shot to last 20 to 25 years and is low maintenance - zero bells and whistles. My focus is not efficiency. Priority = low maintenance and longevity. Currently running 1991 Slant Fin V90 - 80% Direct Vent - baseboard forced hot water - has been excellent, but time to change out. Thoughts, guys/gals? TY!

You are asking an impossible question to answer. "Direct ven" no chimney, needs a draft motor. They don't last 20-25 years. Imagine anything lasting that long???!!!!

@@PipeDoctor TY for the prompt reply. Yes, it would be a Power Vent (sorry I said Direct Vent). My current Slant/Fin V90 (Power Vent) is still going strong - purchased 1991. 32 years. Crazy. Ahhhh, the good ole' days. :)

@@PipeDoctor Agreed and the client needs heat otherwise you would have exchanged it for sure. Kelvin should practice cutting on a straight line too.I think you should complain to WM to get a credit on the next purchase.
