    Fairly standard for me to do an amp test on the pump on any no heat call. Minimum it gives you a baseline of what is going on. It is fast and not intrusive on the system. That said we have been doing this long enough that the mind rules out fast what is not and issue. Like Holmes said "When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth". Basically stop and think before changing parts.

    Back 30 yrs ago had a raised ridge dormer done on my house in Wantagh. the plumbing subcontractor was a plumber from hell. so many mistakes. I am glad I watched the job as closely as I did. To correct a mistake the plumber installed heating pipes in an exterior wall cutting 2 2x4 studs more then half way. Building inspector told the plumber he could not do that ( I called the inspector back) then the toilet they installed leaked from the closet flange ( new toilet) then the water pipe leaked from a joint and I saw he was heating the pipe and then the solder and trying to push the solder into the joint. I asked if he drained the water from the line and he said he did not have to do that ( what an idiot) final problem was when I first put the heat on after the extension was done and we had constant heat to the extension could not control the heat. The plumber came and put a one way flow valve just before the circulator in a vertical pipe. still had constant heat in the extension. saw on the flow valve it said install on horizontal pipe only. called the general contractor and he tried to call the plumber. the plumber told him he did not want to fix anything more at my place. ( all the problems were clearly his mistakes) I called my heating contractor and he came and said the flow valve he installed in the vertical pipe was doing nothing he said when they solder the one way flow valve they must loosen the screw on top to keep from damaging the valve and all he had to do was turn the screw back down so the flapper would keep hot water from flowing until the circulator pulled the water through

    I'm going to have lots of fun fixing all the mistakes with my Boiler. I just purchased a house built in 1914 first I have to remove the water heater because it's blocking access to the boiler. Not sure how I'm going to relocate it yet. Then the boiler is going to need a major tune up. It probably hasn't been done in ages . The water heater is new and the circulator looks about 10 years old. Lots of stalactites growing around fittings on it . Hopefully I don't need to replace it this winter. I got the house for a great price a little under $100k it's all brick and in great shape so I can't complain if it needs a boiler just hoping it gets through a Northern winter we.are about 45 minutes from the Canadian border at lake Superior. It gets really cold up here. If you were closer to me I would probably pay you to service it but you're out near where I grew up I like peace and quiet the city life is behind me now as I retired 😊 . I have no clue how to move the water heater because of the proximity of the chimney, maybe I need to get a Hybrid unit and heat the water with electricity?

    • @theodorgiosan2570
      @theodorgiosan2570 3 місяці тому

      Get a tankless and it will vent directly through the wall and also save you money. You can put it wherever you want. My water heater was on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen and bathroom and when I switched to a tankless I moved it across the house so it's directly underneath.

  • @anthonyspadafora1384
    @anthonyspadafora1384 Рік тому +4

    Pumping into the expansion tank is trouble. All circulation is now negative pressure. They installed a purge assembly on a radiator system lol. I would have opened the flow valve as there is no longer a coil, they can stick and stop circulation and you may as well let that heat gravitate into the radiators instead of locking it in the boiler to get sucked out the chimney. Two pipe direct return gravity system converted to forced circulation without reversing the returns causes random flows in system. 175000 BTU's needs 17.5 GPM. Your 0015 will do 18gpm but the previous little red wouldn't. You could have spent 3 days there. lol

      @@PipeDoctor It's a shame when you look at these old gravity hydronic systems and think about the men that installed them. They were artist. Then you look at what several decades of ignorance did to these systems. Working in the Northeast portion of the country these systems are taken for granted but a lot of your viewers have never seen these beautiful systems complete with ornate radiators. Show more of these original systems systems you work on daily. I was at a sandblast/powdercoat shop in Lancaster this summer. There were quite a few radiators in the yard waiting to be blasted and powder coated, really gorgeous stuff. Then you go to the scrap yard and see these radiators scrapped so they could install electric baseboard for their section 8 rentals. Very sad. "five plumbers" looked at it and it's still broken. that really makes me wonder about plumbers abilities... then again, perhaps he should have just called an HVAC/R company to start with or combined company? not like it's a steamer, which has whole raft's of "gotcha's" involved :)

    ECM pump on an old system full of ferrous material and no mag separator? You're gonna eat the cost of that pump when you should have just put a good ol 0015 in there.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 Рік тому

      really no difference in terms of getting some schmutz inside the cartridge area of either, both work off magnetics.
      the ECM should have more starting torque and less chance of being stuck with schmutz in it. the bearings would be the same still(water lubricated/cooled), most of them sticking are crud clumping up in the bearing surfaces or impeller to volute seal ring area. most often from too much oxygen in the water, because of leaks, bad tank/relief causing frequent refill or customer draining/filling it.
