They Almost Burnt Down The House Flames Rolling Out Boiler Bypassed Roll Out Switch Dunkirk Boiler

- It’s amazing. I literally come across a complete and potentially deadly system installs almost on a daily basis! Our new client had another “plumber” come out 2 weeks ago who “scrubbed” the cast iron boiler. But left after they: bypassed the roll out switch. Left gas tubing loose. Left the pilot burner wide open. And didn’t do a combustion test. Oh, and they never removed the cast iron burners.
This video documents what we uncovered and the steps we took to correct the deadly situation.
Central AC Service Call - Client Heard a BANG - thought it was gunfire outside - but instead it was her central AC unit. Going into the attic where the Goodman air handler is located we found the blower motor cap dead.

Great video. Great quality work. That’s how it’s done .
Great job! What a mess that was. The pilot tubing looks really nice too. I learn a lot from your videos
Exactly if they can’t run a combustion test and see where the numbers are before they leave the job they have no business being in your house!
From the 6min mark to the 8 min mark is the best content I have seen
Hilarious
Mikey pipes 👍🏽💸 love this channel
Your sense of humor made me subscribed but sir, you're a miracle worker.
Awesome job! Loved this video, this really shows the difference between a hack and a good quality HVAC/plumbing contractor; one that's not afraid to get their hands dirty and get the job done. You set the standard my friend!
It’s scary how the previous people left that boiler. Some powerful pilot flame! Great factory looking job on that gas valve tubing! Very thorough with the combustion test!
The Pipe Man does it again!!!!
Nice job mikey pipes!
Another great job. Your a good man and funny.
Well done!
Can you do video explaining combustion analyzer acceptable ranges for gas/oil and what they mean and how to adjust. Thanks for content you do great work
You are far more polite to the dummies before you than I am!
@@PipeDoctor I was referring to the company working on the heater before you arrived.

true that
I'm amazed the contractor before you left the boiler in such poor condition. Mike good job, you left no stone unturned. Everything was replaced and I know you had piece of mind when you finished no second thoughts their.👍👍👍
That wasn’t a “contractor” who previously rigged this boiler to burn down the whole house. That dude was “an idiot with a pickup truck and a hammer.”
Just found you guys and enjoying watch you guys work,
If you want a laugh, I just replaced my bleed valves with aladdin autovents, refilling the system post cleaning flush I thought I had all the new valves fitted. I didn't and after wondering why it was taking a long time to pressurise I found the puddle on the first floor under a rad. Always check never assume.

Great video. New subscriber.
Wow. I’ve never seen a gas boiler look like that. I see it daily on oil. In fact just had my lunch then getting elbow deep in a gas oil one now. Watching from the uk 🇬🇧 love it man !
Great work ! I was wondering how long this job actually took? It seemed very detailed and labor intensive. Thanks for posting!
never seen anything like that!...crazy!
Will you do a video on the overall function of a natural gas low pressure boiler? From ignition to supply and return piping and parts? That’d be awesome.
I like the symbol you use for you business.
I've got to come up with something catchy too.
Great rescue ! Testo most important piece of test equipment
Calvin the whipping boy...good skin young Buck!!!
Wow, what a soot factory that pilot was. Nice job bending the pilot gas tube? Is the pilot tube flared where it attaches to the gas valve?
I once asked a helper to get me a screwdriver. He asked me if I wanted pulp or no pulp in the orange juice LOL
Oil Heats Best Gas Blows Up Best!!! Can't help it I'm a oil man. All jokes aside that was a great repair and you fixed a deadly situation. Great Work!!!
@@PipeDoctor your welcome. Yessir Beckett AF and AFG are my favorite burners. Simple and reliable.
Good for you for having the patience with that POS... what was the gas pressure on completion if you remember?
Good job.. Mine 5 year old Es2 turned into a real issue in a matter of a week as far as I'm concerned. Wish I met you before. 5 different plumbers did not want to do the job. I had to do it myself.
Don’t be too hard on Kelvin some of my helpers make him look like Captain America.

I have to say you’re one of the most knowledgeable guys I’ve seen on UA-cam when it comes to boilers and hot water heaters, with that being said how the fuck you keep calling it a thermal coupling it’s a thermal couple

Do you have a video on the testo 320 how to use it?
Lmao!!! You sure that’s not a oil fired boiler 😂😂😂😂. Damn is that thing sooty !!!
I never thought of wrapping the thermocouple that way it looks so clean
@@PipeDoctor I don’t understand I’m simply complimenting the way u do the thermocouple
Great job. I have to be honest when I see shit like that the only option I’m giving is replacement. Have to commend you for still cleaning heat exchangers. We no longer do it. It’s either replace it or call someone else. You guys did a fabulous job thanks for sharing.
I agree you won a Customer for life. You guys are awesome 😎
@@PipeDoctor With any luck he will put a stop payment on the other companies payment and use this video to show 'em what they did wrong.
Sometimes you come up with some funny stuff, like today: "If your pilot is burning bigger than the Statue of Liberty torch, then you got a problem."
What brand of gloves you use? I use viper n the tear like crazy
1:49 Nice clock, and Whys that gas valve mounted externally on the side thats weird ive never seen that before because usually theyre mounted in the cabnet.
That’s a candidate for a complete replacement if I’ve ever seen one. Gad Zooks
I’m trying to think of when was the last time I heard someone say gad zooms, it was strangely refreshing.
It looked like a solid door on that small room for the boiler and water heater. Was there a dedicated make up air opening in that room?
Great explanation of the faulty pilot that caused that carbonization. Never going to forget this.
Had this same exact thing on a little crown boiler the other day diy apartment building owner trying to change thermocouple took everything apart and somehow orfice wasn’t in pilot assembly when he was done thing sooted flame rolled out and charred all the wiring and everything Then he jumps the rollout to get heat going people can be so ignorant to save a buck
The pilot orifice was missing from that old pilot assembly for sure
thats a clean burnin hell i tell you what
This is why I prefer forced-air heating and condensing tankless hot water heaters.
I'm thinking of moving to New York just to get my hydronic boiler serviced by Mikey Pipes. Know anyone in the Connecticut area that's any good?
The previous guys must have took off the front panel and cleaned that lol.
Good job. Did you check for leaks ar the pilot tubing? Also, don’t mess around too much with the gas pressure...it states the pressure on the boiler..usually 3.5” WC...don’t stray far from there.
Connect a manometer to the valve as you are adjusting pressure.
@@PipeDoctor WRONG, It is the Maximum pressure...
I live and work above 5800 ft . Almost every heater that I service must have the fuel input corrected even units tagged as " high altitude "

What’s your excess air at. Dialing in your excess air can greatly improve your efficiency
In Canada we have tssa one call and that other guy would be out of business. Fined heavy
All ops ok!
Is it common to clean out gas boilers? (Other than this case)
what is the efficiency of a new boiler if this old one is at 0%
I'm a gas safe engineer in the UK. We have to use a Gas Analyser by law on every service on a gas appliance now.
Alot of the boilers in the US seem very inefficient. We only install condensing boilers now because of the greenhouse gasses that the older boilers emmit.
In UK and Europe, energy costs are so expensive, that expensive high efficiency boilers, make sense. From a financial perspective. In the US, hard to say that high efficiency boilers are worthwhile from a dollars and cents perspective.
@@boby115 either way gas boilers are gonna be phased out soon and we will be using hydrogen boilers so that we meet the zero carbon emmissions. This needs to be a global goal for all countries.
The problem is a lot of people in the US and other countries are still in denial about climare change and in the next 10 years if this isnt implemented we are for a very bleak future. It won't be your job you will be worried about, it will be the survival of the human race.
Mark my words, this will come to pass.
@@davidwoods9446
No we are not in denial of climate change. We understand that climate change is part if life. The climate has been changing from the very beginning of time and is not going to stop.
We do not fall for this idea of a carbon tax for ehat they call global warming.
@@lesleyboeder1798 Then your ignorant and uneducated on climatology. Try studying and listening to people like David Attenborough, marine biologist Dr Ashade Ros, Ecologist Jeremy Rifkin or Dr Niall Mcann.
Do your research on permafrost and the history of global temperatures over the last 40 years. Then look at the data on CO2 levels over the last 40 years.
When you actually educate your brain on what is happening it's easy to see why 97% of world scientists agree on the reasons why we have extreme weather and the connection with CO2 emmissions.
Never seen a gas boiler look that choked up...holy crap...2.5 hours doing what? Never even noticed the pilot flame thrower? 😂 Excellent diagnosis and repaIr. How do you keep the air dampers/shutters from moving on the burners?
Damn, I've watched a few of your video's videos and I have to say that gas boilers in America look antiquated and dangerous compared to what we use in Europe.
Food for thought. Sometimes easier to clean out sooted/carbonized gas boiler with a hose and wet vac. Soot vac top layer of soot. Then hose down in between sections. Use wet vac to catch water from underneath. Quicker, cleaner and more through.
@@PipeDoctor Not as much as you would think. First time someone suggested this to me, I thought he was crazy. Put a gardening thing on the hose. Gives you total control. Have wet vac up and running. Will barely make a mess. You can also put some disposable baking pans under the boiler to help contain the water. Try it. Once you get the hang of it ( won't take you long at all) you will see that this method is a game changer.
How the hell can it get so dirty never seen that before,
Normal operations for that kind of burner is like 7% 02 in the flue gasses
Where the hell is the slab leak water heater video!!!!!! I have been waiting all week!!!....
Me too. Can’t wait!
I hate Dunkirk boilers. And I have seen them old ones with the shipping wire still on them. Crazy
I'm all about saving things. But this thing should be replaced jeez. Btwn the last person's bill. Your bill. And safety cheaper for new. Holy moly.
As my company would say, "Due to system age and condition, we cannot warranty repairs. Strongly recommend full replacement."
I dont know why you say that. If the owner only gets the rest of this winter and the next winter out of it, the cost was worth it. After a good professional cleaning and the repaired pilot flame, that thing may go for 5 more years with no issues.
@@nickv4073 cuz he was at 90% the cost of a new boiler. Which would have lasted another 30 years.
@@shahsmerdis "90%"? In what alternate universe? lol!!

Wow what a mess!
"The thermocouple is obviously good but I'm gonna replace it anyway." Why? Genuine question - not bashing - just wondering why you would replace it when you know it is working. Is it just a matter of "this thing is so fscked up I'm not gonna risk a callback on a $15 thermocouple"?
I suggest fine combustion adjustment should be done with door on.
Poor Kelvin

Closed captions would be helpful thanks
12:20 i thought he was being mean but rewatching i had missed the bit about the meter zeroing out. I find it helps people understand if they can form their own conclusions, tell someone not to do something a certain way or to do somthing a certain way, they wont understand the importance and reason. Have him see how skewed or invalid the readings could be.
In fact itd be neat to see how sensitive these devices are by comparing relatively consistent measurements with differing levels of calibration "quality". Can they measure the oxygen and co2 of yourself breathing?
Hi, why didn't you just clean the pilot injector, and set the injector pressure on the GV....
I would also say the pilot was missing the orifice . Previous guy must have lost it. Needed to be replaced.
