    Speaker 1: Okay, so we're talking today about breeds of rabbits and we have here just to show you different breeds. A few, this one is called a Jersey Wally, this one is a Rex the grey one, this one is a Flemish Giant, this one is a New Zealand White and we have here a little buddy called a Lion Head and next to him is a Netherlands Dwarf. We actually DE-emphasize breeds when people are adopting bunnies we always tell them no matter how beautiful the rabbit, no matter how much you love the breed, the thing to pay attention to really is the personality. And I told Amy once that is kind of like when you are dating a guy that is just really gorgeous and you find out that the personality isn't there, you don't care about the looks after a while it is very, very interesting. I had somebody come into my apartment one time to adopt only a Lap rabbit. The Lap rabbits are the ones that have the down ears. We don't have a Lap rabbit here but they have the ears that go down like a Cocker Spaniels and this lady came in and she said she only wanted consider a Lap and I had a couple of Laps and she loved one of them and started righting the adoption papers to take him home. But every time she went by this other rabbits cage the rabbit would stick his head out and look at her and try to make eye contact with her and after a couple of minutes she said you know Mary I think this rabbits trying to tell me something . So I said I think he is too , why don't you put down the Lap ear rabbit and go over and talk to that rabbit. And long story short she did and ended up adopting that second rabbit and the rabbit was definitely reaching out to her. It wasn't a breed she was interested in but the personality was so out going and so affectionate and she just loved him to pieces. So, we always tell people look at the different breeds for sure, we get all breeds into shelters all the time but go by the personality. It is much more
    Speaker 2: But normally you wouldn't put a bunch of rabbits together like this because they always don't get along, right?
    Speaker 1: Thanks for saying that, this is a challenge to have all these rabbits together on the same table . We have male, male, next to each other female, female next to each other that's not an easy thing to do in the rabbit world. Were really careful about putting rabbits together and we're just doing this to give an idea of different breeds. We want to make sure that we stay safe here.
    Speaker 2: Wow.
    Speaker 1: We are keeping the rabbits from each other for that reason.
    Speaker 2: Look at all the different coats.
    Speaker 1: Look at all the hair flying in the air from all these different coats.
    Speaker 2: Rabbit breeds.

    I completely agree with choosing a bun based on personality. We originally wanted to get a Flemish Giant because they looked so cool and big. But then we sat amongst a group of rabbits at an adoption event, and this scruffy looking skinny brown rabbit kept coming up to us and licking our knees. He kept putting his paws on us and looking at us. Even though the little kids called this rabbit "ugly looking", he won our hearts over and we ended up adopting him instead. Almost five years later, we never regret our decision. He has such an amazing personality and is part of our family. He also shed his so-called "ugly" coat and is a beautiful velvety brown bun bun, by the way, with proper love and care! We also got him a bun-wife, who we also rescued. Chosen based on her lovely personality, too :-)

    • @BrittyKay
      @BrittyKay 9 років тому +13

      eldukedrino each rabbit can be a different breed that dose not matter but you will have to spay/nuter them for a better chance at bonding them an it is good for a indoor rabbit to get nutered or spayed helps them live longer

    Having kept many different rabbits over the years, we discovered the rabbits with the best personalities were the big, "plain" rabbits, such as the white, pink eyed one in your video. Dutch rabbits were also one of the friendliest breeds. We had no luck with the dwarf, lop eared rabbits. They were by and large, lacking in personality, and some were down right mean. We had a little grey dwarf, who would just as soon attack you, as look at you. We found the males usually, not always, had better personalities than the females. We also noticed the females would often try to run away, if they could. The males would hang around, when you let them out, and usually not go very far.

    • @shs2284
      @shs2284 9 років тому +4

      I heard the females can have a really nice personality if they are spayed/neutered (and the same holds true for my own female rabbit), then they are less hormonal and also less likely to hump/attack the male. But that also depends on each individual personality, too...

      We had a New Zealand white and he was the best rabbit we ever had. He had the most gentle disposition and he would follow you around like a little puppy dog. He would push his head against your leg until you started petting him, then, he would immediately lay down and close his eyes, and grind his teeth. We miss that old rabbit. He was 10 when he died.

      Rory Gallagherfan mine was 1 and a half when it died.. The reason it dies I think is because it gets too fat.. I remember my brother always give it chocolates and he does like it..

    • @yanetalmeyda2309
      @yanetalmeyda2309 9 років тому +2

      Rory Gallagherfan I own two rabbits, one of them looks like the Dutch one here but a bit cuter and tinier, and a dwarf-looking ADORABLE one. The Dutch is much more relaxed, nicer, and reaches out to everyone in the family. Unlike the Dutch, the dwarf-looking (we don't know the breed...) rabbit is stubborn and came home the day we got him really aggressive. Though, both were raised in different locations, I agree with your statement quite a lot.

    I got my two male rabbits as babies and I realized that they fight (terribly) once they hit puberty. I took them and had them neutered and it took 30 days for the testosterone to get completely out of their system and now they are doing great together. Also, I wanted to thank you two for showing me the best way to cut my bunnies nails. I watched your video and got straight up and used your technique and it worked beautifully. Even my spunky rabbit, Bugsie let me do his nails with no problems at all. I love you gals and keep the video's coming because you are a life saver for me and my bunnies.

    I have a little lionhead. She doesn't have the full mane like the one in this video does, but her ears have wicked long fur and she has a long "fraggle" hairdo, also a bit of a skirt. Her personality is amazing! She's quirky, friendly, outgoing, can sometimes have an attitude, is extremely determined, wicked smart, and very curious. She's not aggressive at all. And if she hears or sees you coming, she'll charge up to you to greet you.
    My lionhead before this one was really aggressive, or at least toward me she was. Otherwise she was decently friendly toward my mom, brother, cats, and dad. So it all really depends on the rabbit and if he/she likes you or not.

    My bun's a mutt (part harlequin, part lop, no floppy ears, 100% gorgeous) and I can really remember falling in love with him at the pet shop, he was just a baby and his back feet and ears (which are pretty big, he's a big bun) were the same side that they are now that he's 4 years old, he was a very sleepy baby and he didn't notice me until he woke up from the corner of the pen and then he just kinda climbed into my hand (which was just set down on the floor so that different rabbits could come sniff me) and sat down there like it was his pillow. When I picked him up, he just tucked his nose under my arm and fell back to sleep. He's the cuddliest rabbit I've ever met, he actually likes being held and will even hop up to me and pick up his front paws so that I can pick him up easier. He's been the best companion animal ever for me and I'm glad that I was not looking for any kind of bunny in particular and just let the bunny choose me. I feel really lucky to have found the bunny I found because he's just the right bun for me!

    Based on personality i have a :
    Lionhead x Holland 5 year old doe.
    Harlequin x Netherland dwarf 4 year old doe.
    New Zealand x Netherland dwarf 6 month old (fixed) Buck.
    They all live together. They where matched by personality.
    Mixes are mostly more healthy and i love how they have more breed features. Their personalties are the best❤️
    The lionhead mix is the real boss. She likes to break stuff. She is very demanding and cares a lot about food. She is an escape ninja too.
    The Harlequin mix is a shy little one. She loves to get pets and cuddles and is very calm. She doesnt care for food at all and is always trying to ignore the other doe's drama.
    The New zealand mix is happy he has two ladies. He is a good bunny police who is always between the girls. He gives attention to both of them. He is very curious and outgoing. With beautiful blue eyes and a white heart on his side he is a real cupid.
    The doe's often wash eachother as well. Mostly they are all in one pile together. Sleeping and eating all goes together. When you have more then one bunny (very recommended theyre group animals) you need to let them choose a match or match up some good personalities. Wich can be quite difficult.

    I have a Holland Lop that is about 3 years old now that I got from a breeder at 8 weeks old. He is very calm and people friendly. After about six months I got rid of his cage because he always wanted to be out around everyone. He has a section in my room where his food, water and hay are and his litter box is in a corner and he always uses it. i leave him out all day alone when I am at work and he never makes a mess or anything. Holland Lops are a very good breed to have if you want a rabbit that is very laid back and can live in your room without a cage taking up a bunch of space.

    I used to have some smaller rabbits, though I wished I would have seen that type of breed here. Bunnies can be a hassle, though it's always important to pick out the right Breed, like you would with a Dog and such.

      It's worth pointing out that in many areas, it is illegal to own cottontail rabbits. (The domesticated rabbit and domesticated house rabbits are European rabbits.) As cottontails have NOT been domesticated, laws regarding keeping wild animals generally apply, and the relationship one will have with a wild cottontail rabbit isn't the same as with a domesticated rabbit.

    • @K0dAHeY
      @K0dAHeY 8 років тому +1

      Zac Paul Sorry to sound clueless but huh really!? Though I remembered my Parents and I would used to say they were cotton tails, since it was usually white on the bottom and how its usually fluffy, somewhat. Maybe they're a mixed breed then, who knows but I'll just explain what they looked like before. They're smaller than most Domesticated Rabbits but they aren't dwarfs either. They either had a Rex colored fur, or the majority of mine used to have dark brown spots and white fur. My last Rabbit actually had white fur and gray spots, since he was in a litter with one of my other Rabbits. Although I have been trying to look for what breed they are, I had no luck to be honest. But hmm I see!
      Although then again, in my area there wasn't a law stating it was illegal, though probably..

    • @hollywick4046
      @hollywick4046 7 років тому

      AngelGoat depending on what you mean by fluffy, you may have had a mini rex or a fuzzy netherland. (by the way the one that she says is a jersey wooly in this video is actually a lionhead) I actually show rabbits, i specialize in jersey woolys and netherland dwarfs. Sometimes we get fuzzy netherlands, they had slightly longer fur. A mini rex has sleek and soft fur like velvet (or a velveteen rabbit) Most rabbit breeds can be any color so when you say white on the bottom, im thinking otter or marten coloring ^-^ both of those breeds have those markings in their genetics. So your rabbit may not have been a cottentail.

    • @hollywick4046
      @hollywick4046 7 років тому

      AngelGoat Also the coloring you were mentioning with the dark spots could have been broken coloring or charlie coloring. Both are very pretty.

    • @K0dAHeY
      @K0dAHeY 7 років тому

      They sure were beautiful and probably so then.
      Also thank you so much. C: Though when I mean fluffy, they're fur was always smooth coated and very soft.
      And I said also, I had Mini Rex's.
      Which I probably mistook them for another breed, again my bad..
      And wow really!? That's actually awesome I heard a lot about it! From documentary's and such! I wasn't thinking right huh, although exactly!
      Except the Grandmother was Ginger or Rex color. While the Grandfather was white and had Black spots. Which the majority if Rabbits I had were spotted dark brown and white, except for one looking like her grandmother. Which was Rex color.
      So yes indeed!

    I grew up surrounded by New Zealand whites then got a mixed angora rabbit Male who was so docile he was lovely.. then got a pair of French lops and my two house bunnies were a lop and netherland dwarf. Now, I don't generally go looking for a particular breed, personality speaks volumes to me, love that quirky personality rather than looks. Because at the end of the day, their quirky personality, their bond with you means so much more. Thank heavens for little bunnies xxx

    Same thing happened to me. I went to possibly adopt a Lionhead. But this sweet little mini Rex, the smallest one, kept coming up to us and wanted to interact. It was like he chose us, which makes things much easier. He was also very mellow which is what I was hoping for. So there you go

  • @CreamNF

    It reminds me of how I got mine back then...
    There were many colourful rabbits, lionheads, and stuff, but the little brown one was directly looking at me. It leaned up against the cage at looked at me. In that moment I fell in love and knew wich one I wanted.
    But my parents kept on going, we just started our visit at this fishmarket. Yes, fishmarket.
    (I was a child and didn't think of animal shelters...The shops didn't have the small ones. And we went to many shops, after I finally got my parents to accept my plea to get my own pet and that I would always care for it on my own, no need for them to help me with it. (It took me a whole year of asking my parents and researching about rabbits...and asking again and again and answering every question they had about rabbits...) Oh that disappointment as we went after their "Yes, you can have one" to all the shops in the cities around our village and not one had a Dwarf!)
    So we went over the whole market. There where even people selling chickens and so on. There were 2 more persons selling rabbits. Also beautiful ones, but none of them took my attention as the little brown one did. My parents and brother told me: Look at this: Isn't it beautiful? Of that funny lionhead? But no, there was only this one rabbit, that I wanted. Nobody could've changed my mind and this is how I made one of the best decisions I ever made in my life=3
    We got friends very fast and had some wonderful years together~♥

    I invested in a Holland Lop rabbit & he's really the most endearing! Keeps to himself most times, loves head pets, potty-trained, but am gradually attempting to have him up on the bed. He's not incredibly outgoing now, but that may change once a place of my own us acquired! I do truly desire another someday (same breed, different breed, who knows). One that can relax with me would be so damn beyond awesome.

    I have a french angora, and I knew he was the rabbit I wanted because my former friend's rabbit had a litter of Kits, and I was with them when they were about three weeks old. They're all running around, doing their thing. Then, this little guy lets me pick him up, and I cuddle him. He falls asleep on my chest and just lays there for hours. I told her that was going to be the rabbit I would adopt. Of course, I waited to take him from mommy because he needed that extra time to be with her. Now he's almost seven months old, and he's super affectionate. Always looking every time I have company, and he LOVES head pets.

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 7 років тому

      They don't "need" walks but they certainly can be taken for a walk if they enjoy it! They are prey animals & so have to feel secure, best if you're going to use a lead/harness to put the harness on first, with no lead so they can get used to it & do it somewhere familiar, best is inside your house, where rabbits should be living - backyard cages are great for outdoor time, but you can't enjoy your bunny if it lives there! Once the rabbit's used to the harness, then start attaching a lead & let it roam while not pulling the lead until it gets used to it. Once it's totally used to it, you can start guiding it's movement with the lead. Once that's all good, you can go outside & sit down & let your bunny explore & your body will act as a safe location it can return to for safety. A few months of that & you'll be able to read it's body language & know when it's happy or scared & what it enjoys & then you can start trying short walks around your yard & then gradually extending into your neighbourhood if your bunny enjoys it. Remember to pick it up if it's suddenly scared by something or if you see something that you worry might be a threat, like an unleashed out of control large dog

    Very true. I got my rabbit based on her personality. The day I went to look at the different rabbits at the adoption center my current rabbit was the only one that was poking her head out of her cage and was basically telling me, "TAKE ME HOME WITH YOU!" Everyone should really choose a certain rabbit based on its personality not its looks.

    I had a Netherland Dwarf rabbit for 9 years she was my best friend after her passing I immediately went and adopted a new bunny now I have a mixed breed Harlequin rabbit. I know the personality traits I look for in a bunny and that's the only thing that I care about so whenever I adopt a rabbit I go and find the most timid and relaxed bunny that loves to be picked up and cuddled :-)
