    Hi all - there have been a few comments about Guus being in the pool. Here's a note from Guus's family providing some context to the swimming clip:
    "Guus went for a brief lap to cool down in the pool. While other bunnies may not like it, he really seemed to enjoy it. We wrapped him in a towel after the swim and then he ran like Superman on the grass with lots of happy binkies. His fur is made out of many layers which dries very quickly. Regardless, this is not a regular occurrence."

      Our bunny and mini Schnautzer teased each other all the time, one time the bunny overdid it again and a chase through the garden enrolled. We have a small garden pond and our bunny leaped off the rim right into the water and dove through to the other side. This video showed me, we were not alone in having a swimming bunny :)

      That’s ok, but it really should not be shown in the video, especially with no explanation given in the video itself. Bathing the rabbit is very dangerous, can cause hypothermia and death. This particular situation with one bunny who may have liked it on a hot day is just sending the wrong message to general audiences.

    • @EmilyTerranova
      @EmilyTerranova 2 роки тому +513

      @@theshibagirl536 That is not accurate. Forcing a rabbit into water can cause shock. It does not cause hypothermia, although if the fur stays wet it can lead to the skin becoming sore. But once in a blue moon, there's a rabbit who enjoys swimming. There is nothing alarming about it in the video (the rabbit is not panicking and got out on his own, so he wasn't just tossed into the pool, he is not unsupervised, they can reach him if necessary, he is large enough that the chlorine won't be harmful, it is sunny and likely hot out, and his head is above the water).

    Im glad they mentioned bunnies are a lot of work and not great pets for kids. I hate to see them stuck in a cage all day when people think they're like a hamster or goldfish. They're smart and very sensitive. They often need another bunny or they'll get depressed and lonely.

      @@alienatedchild7186 And why? Google is a thing and it really isn't too hard to inform yourself before getting a pet.
      That's basically all I'm asking. Don't buy a pet, only because the idea of that animal in your house is cool or the animal is cute. Inform yourself beforehand, what that animal needs when it comes to environment, food, attention, contact with other animals of that kind etc.
      For example don't get a pet bird, because you wanna pretend to be a pirate. Inform yourself and then get one if you're sure you're capable of giving that bird a fair and good life. Many people would get a bunny like that for their little kid, because "it's cute". As you see, it actually requires a lot of attention and awareness, which isn't something little kids excel at if we're honest.

They like to be able to *choose* where to rest and hang out, and to have a space all to themselves (with an open door.) Pens are also great if they can't be fully free roaming all the time, provided the bunny doesn't know how to push the panels so they come together work like a ladder (discovered a rescue bunny knew that trick once, quite a sight!)

      The problem aren't necessarily the kids, but their parents who don't show them how to properly care for an animal (but still buy them for their kids). It's perfectly fine to get (at least two) bunnies for your kids, IF you as a parent make sure the pets are being cared for correctly. I don't get it why many people just blame the kids...

    • @DBLCreations
      @DBLCreations 11 місяців тому +12

      @@sachikoda Well of course i agree that parents should show how to properly take care of the bunnies. But we all know how that goes. RIGHT? 😏 That's why many blame the kids i guess. Bunnies are very fragile little creatures. Kids like to pull on their ears or paws. And i just don't think that a bunny is a proper pet for a little kid. I also don't think that it's about how you teach your child to be around the bunnies but how you bring up your child since the beginning of their birth. Also, one child is not the same as the other. One may have a more kind, gentle character whereas the other might be a bit more "wild/aggressive."
      In the end, all i'm saying is that these bunnies are really fragile and even grownups have difficulty to be a proper pet owner for their bunny. My bunny is 8yrs. old now and i'm still learning new things. But again, it's just my personal opinion of course.

    My Daddy gave my Son a lop eared bunny for Easter the year before he died. My Son named him Arthur, Artie for short, and that bunny was so spoiled. My Son was in his teens so he took very good care of him. We used to take Artie to my Mama’s house to visit. She lived on the family farm and Artie just loved all the sweet grass there. My Sister and her Boyfriend built Artie a moveable “rabbit condo” so he could graze while we were there. It was a great little house and when he wanted it moved, he would let us know, Loudly! He was a wonderful Rabbit. He passed away when he was 8 years old, we still miss him.

    Oh my gosh, what a lovely family!! Rabbits are not given Nearly enough credit. Theyre a bit like a mix of dog & cat traits. You really need to honor their individual personality & earn their trust. They should be considered exotics as they do require a lot of intelligence & effort to keep them safe-puppy/bunny/baby proofing, them being free roam-cages should be illegal, etc. other than that, theyre actually quite easy & lovely but you cant be an idiot or not put in the basic effort. We had a big ole gray rabbit when I was a kid and he chewed up all the electric cords. We'd be watching TV and he'd just come flying in the room flipping and twisting and then he'd just land on the other side of the room and lay there like nothing just happened. Scared the hell out of us the first time he did it, I told my mom what the hell'd you feed the rabbit. We'd all sit on my big bed and play board games and he'd jump up there and all our little game pieces would go flying every where, then he'd put his big ole feet in our popcorn bowl, we sure loved him. 💕

      I wouldn't make judgements based on lack of information. We had a beagle when I was a kid. Some time after he passed, we wanted to adopt another one. The rescue we used before had two beagles, one young and one older. We took them both in initially, but the puppy was so destructive and was giving bad habits to the older one. We tried many things, training classes, hiring a trainer to come to the home and work with us. etc. But she was destroying the house. My parents hit a breaking point and decided to return her, and the original foster family took her back. The dog we kept had his own issues but did improve on his own.
      There's nothing wrong if a pet isn't a good fit, as long as you aren't just leaving it on the side of the road or outside a random building. If the rescue group or foster will take it back, or you find them a good home, then that's better for the pet in the end.

    I had a part Flemish rabbit. (we were never told she was part Flemish) Problem is she was shoved at us and we felt horrible to decline because the person *guilt tripped us into keeping her.* She was the sweetest thing. I was grateful that our dogs and cats got along with her fine (they ignored her and she ignored them, which was good.) We quickly learned we should've declined anyways, because her first few months of life were really crowded due to our tiny house (we refused to keep her outside due to the weather here changing drastically within minutes, literally. It can be sunny one moment here and then snow flurrying the next) After trying our hardest to make her life alright with the small household, we finally decided her best interest was to give her a better, larger home. We found a nearby bunny rescue and after checking the place out on campus, we knew she'd have a lot more fun here.
    My reason for typing this was to prove her point more: *Bunnies/rabbits are good, wonderful and sweet pets. But not for little children, and my added part, not for someone with a tiny home.* I'll clarify again that we loved her to death, but we were *guilt tripped into taking her.* In a way, I'm glad. I'm glad we got her so they wouldn't put her in the wild like some jerks do to already domesticated animals. I know she lived the rest of her life on a nice little rescue. And that's what matters most.

      Bunnies can die if they get wet. Water in their ears can easily lead to infection, same with skin irritation and the cold causing stress. This is a really irresponsible thing to do and I'm glad the bunny is ok. This is the reason why bunnies take dust baths instead of regular baths - water can be VERY dangerous for them.

    We had an indoor Bunbun. He had a indoor crate, an outdoor 6ft dog enclosure and was free to roam the house most of the day. He liked to lay on the couch and watch TV while the kids were at school. I don’t know why. He stomped when he was mad, he cuddled when he was tired, he licked you when he loved you. I miss that little guy.

      My hubby & I just got a baby bunny. He's never gonna remodel anything... but me constantly observing the bunnies behavior, even tho he's pretty fearless, even for such a little dude, he's still cautious too. Only, I really don't know what he'd be like alone. Anyhow, he's so little, his roaming time is pretty much on our bed. So, that's plenty of space for him to play. At least for now. & we do put him in a cage. But only during the night time. If that, bc hes so darn cute, we'll still let him have his cuddle times... but the cage is big enough for him too. To zoomy, & binky. It's tall & spacious enough. Besides, he likes it in there anyways. It's conveniently right beside the bed for him. & he tells me every time he wants to go back in. By propping his front legs on the top rim. There's food & water in there. But he does sleep alot. So sometimes when I catch him sleeping in there I just let him be. He props himself on the cage & stands every time we leave or enter the room or when I think he wants to be picked up again

    Thanks for sharing. I had as a child (over a period of perhaps 7-8 years) a total of about 60 rabbits. Some were from the wild and became very tame - others were more domesticated rabbits I borrowed (from a rabbit "farmer") over the summers. Much of my childhood was in the countryside/nature. My father built a large cage for them and I often went into the cage and the rabbits would jump into my lap while I fed them - or they just licked salt from my arms after I had been swimming (we were close to the sea).
    Now I am 70 years old and occasionally watch and enjoy pet videos like this one. As a child I had many other animals (many of them without any social character) that were from the wild but never any cat or dog. Some of them were rescued "baby animals" which had fared ill for some reason. I am pretty sure that these types of experiences are great for children (not too young however) to develop empathy and learn about biology. Doubt that dictating alienators (country rulers for instance) and other brutal personalities ever had a chance to develop a loving relationship with any social pets (or even humans).

      @@teerich2011 I came to the U.S. (Adrian, Michigan) as an exchange student at age 17 and was lucky to end up in a family which was very positive about pets from the wild (no cats or dogs in the house). My U.S. sisters and I had turtles, garter snakes, frogs and toads (food for the snakes...), occasionally birds. Before my time there, they had had a flying squirrel in the house - as a pet... (so I missed that). The important thing was the attitudes and curiosity regardless of the topics (science, music, politics, sports - you name it). Later in life I visited many different countries in all continents except the arctic regions. Today, I spend as much time as possible in my house in south Sweden ("in the middle of the forest") and am blessed to have all sorts of wildlife around - occasionally more odd species but I am happy with the ordinary life showing up every day. I never saw a rabbit here but there are wild hares visiting my garden most weeks so that is OK - I must not have them in my lap.

    Flemish Giants are such amazing rabbits. They seem like the Great Danes of rabbits. So happy Guus has such a wonderful family and he's not kept in a cage! Rabbits are a lot of work to take care of PROPERLY. I had 2 house rabbits (that were not caged, but I did keep them in my walkout basement, where they had a whole, huge room that was "bunny proofed". They were great pals (brothers actually and neutered) and used a litterbox (with wheat based litter - never use clay based litter with buns). They weren't snuggly like Guus, but seemed to just enjoy people being around - and would put their heads down for pets - on their own terms. I loved seeing them do the "flops" and the "binkies".
