    The idea of being able to baton with a knife is for those times when you don't have an ax. Ultralight backpacking is a good example as is losing your kit or anytime a day hike or afternoon hunt unexpectedly turns into an overnight in the bush. (It happens more often than you'd think.) It's important that any survival type knife be capable of it, even if you don't plan on using the technique regularly. I prefer an ax or a hawk, but I carry a knife capable of processing firewood if/when necessary.

    I held off forever buying a 7....I have the 10, (Which I REALLY like), the 9, and the 16. I own quite a few TOPS ans ESEE's too. I finally gave in and bought a 7, and couldn't be happier. I guess I would compare it with the ESEE 6, but I don't mind "Beating up" on the 7 as much. Great all around semi big blade!

    Nice review Scout, love my BK-7. Tough knife that works well for big and small jobs. The handle is slick, I wrapped mine with a thin piece of skateboard tape, works really well.

    I agree with you about the saber grinds. Full flat grinds are often better at slicing, but I like the strength and durability of saber grinds. The BK7 has such a wide blade and the grind is high so you aren't losing any slicing ability compared to most full flat grinds in its class.

    GREAT knife. I love mine. I'm in the process of testing and reviewing the BK-7 myself. That 1095 cro-van can really take a beating + cannot deny that mean ready for business look. Great review as always LBS! Keep up the good work.

    No doubt my favorite bushcraft knife. Also, I wanna point out that in most videos of this type, I see the person batoning a piece of pre-cut wood.. In my experience, you really need a hatchet for survival but this is the perfect knife to own that would possibly suffice if you get caught without a hatchet.

    I almost have a complete set of Becker Knives, with the exception of the BK-3, I'm a 3knife carry guy, I couldn't find a good match for my BK-2, so I paired it off with a Ontario Gen2 SP-51, and the BK-16, my BK-9 with the BK-10, and the BK-16, any how one of my favorite sets in the Becker line is my BK-7 and the BK-17, to my surprise, the Ka-bar Swabbie looks good with the two other clip points, I have other manufacture sets, but my BK7 set is one of my favorite, the steel is excellent, and with this set, I can depend my life on it, great knife, and Thanx for the video.

    I chose the BK15 and the BK7 because their main functions don't necessarily overlap. You could make the same case for the Bk16 combined with either the BK7 or BK9.

    I have a BK9, and I second this review. Really impressive edge holding with no rolls or chips even through batoning and chopping. Great handle design. I don't love the sheath though. the rattle drives me nuts.

  • @paulie4x1
    @paulie4x1 10 років тому

    And the Grivory Handle as far as I'm concerned is great pervious to the elements, blood and not slippery when wet, I had no reason to go with the micarta handles mine I left stock as all my Becker's and the handles work great. Very ergonomic.

    If you're still interested in the BK2, and haven't bought one yet, take a look at the new BK10. It's not as thick or heavy as the BK2 but still retains all of its usefulness, IMHO anyway. The BK15 is a personal favorite of mine as well.

    Here a little tidbit for you. The steel in the blade, 1095 Cro-van, is the same steel Cold Steel was using in their blades and calling it Carbon V. That is not a rumor, that fact comes from a listing of all steels, manufactures, etc.

    Most people don't understand a ramp on the knife, Bark River has a great definition on why they put a ramp on their Bravo 1, I really like a ramp for that reason, first you DONT puss your thumb against it, you ALWAYS place your Thumb over it then the balance is greater in your hand when your slicing something up close., and they say you can strike a flint on it, I don't find that to be practical but some say they use that little choil insyead, whatever I use the striker I got with my flint rod.

    The truth is that processing firewood is better left to an ax or a hawk. Batoning with a knife is an overused technique that was really designed only for those times when an ax isn't available, such as a true survival situation. Depending on the wood, some knots can be nearly as hard as a rock, and I'm being literal. If you hit one while batoning you're very likely to damage the edge regardless of the quality of the knife or the steel. Baton only when you have to; otherwise use an ax.

    I tried batoning with my bk7 and the edge did not really hold up. I was extremely impressed with the knife up until I tried batoning with it. Now I have several little chips in the edge as well as a little flat spot. Not really sure what happened. I batoned over another log so the blade would not strike the grand when it went through.

    Say Heah, ALL my posts can be consolidated into this, the BK-7 is one of my Fav's for making a great 3knife carry optiin, I paired it off with the BK-17 and the Ka-Bar Swabbie suprisingly the three knives match and makes a handsome set. I also love my BK-9 and the BK-10, and Oh Yeah my BJ-2 with my Ka-Bar Zomstro that Zomstro is a Coping looking tool, with its straight edge it's great to use similar to a Carpenters Hatchet or a Japanese Hatchet.

    As solely a woods knife, the ESSE 6 is superior to the BK7 due to it's blade shape, geometry, and overall balance of the knife. The ESSE 6 was designed as a survival knife, the BK7 was designed to replace the KA-BAR USMC fighting knife

    Well, if weight is the concern, then choose the BK7. The BK7 is .85 pounds and the BK2 is a full pound. Even though it's two inches longer, it's 3/16" thick instead of the BK2's 1/4". Even though it may be thinner, it should still stand up to any task that you have. The BK7 would also probably be a better batonner if that's your thing, because of the extra length.

    ESEE 6, other than being twice as expensive, is a better carving knife than the BK7, and is easier to handle with real precision in a bushcraft/survival role. The BK7, however, makes a better chopper and is better for batoning through firewood. The ESEE 6 is a truly excellent knife, and may be a better overall outdoorsman's knife, but whether it is worth the extra cash will depend largely on what you want to do with it. The Ontario RAT-7 is another good one to look at.

    I really like the SRK. Great design (which CS stole from Fallkniven btw). Carbon V isnt magical. In fact it wasn't even consistently the same steel. Still a very good knife. However, if I had to bet my life on one of them for outdoor survival it would be the BK7 without question. It's much stronger. Full tang with repairable/replaceable scale handle. I texture the scales with a soldering iron for better grip. KaBar's 1095CV is excellent. My only complaint is the sheath. It's cheap Chinese crap.

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 9 років тому

      Oh I didn't say I didn't like choil, I do, but when I ordered my Bravo 1, Bark River had a good explanation how to hold a knife with a ramp, I got all my Bravo 1's with the ramps even though Bark River will grind it off for you if you want a rampless Bravo 1, but all my Swamp Rat Knives have a choil except my Rodent Solution, a choil helps me to choke on a knife and use it as a smaller knife and still have a longer blade in one knife, I like mine, infact I just ordered a Swamp Rat Rodent 6 I had it thinned down from its robust thick .265" thick stock and I had the top gaurd taken off, what I got is a beefy Ratmandu on steriods it makes good curl's and I use that 6" blade as a smaller knife when I need to do more delicate work, but also where they took the top gaurd off it fits my hand so good that when I chop it has a better snap motion better than the rest of my 6" blades and I have a nice stable of knives in that size like my A-1, or my CarbonV S.R.K for example I do have a couple more but only my Mod. Rodent 6 and my Vox Rold have choils, IMO a choil knife is like two knife sizes in one, I never felt I didn't have enough cutting edge, also my new Mod. Rodent 6 became my Fav. for this summer I also paired it off with one of my 2Hawks either the Warbeast if I'm processing alot of camp wood, or my Double Bit Hatchet awesome lightweight that punches like a heavyweight and my Wicked Tough Saw what interested me was the guy reviewing it even lite chopped with it it's that tough, and I can carry it in the open possition the trio is light enough that I carry them on person comfortably , but with the BK-7, I paired it off with the BK-17 and the Ka-Bar Swabbie the match is almost perfect and a great functioning set, I replaced the scales on the Swabbie with the black scales that it came with and it looks sick now and a great combo too.

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 9 років тому

      From my experience Bark River does a great job on the Temper, every once in a while a batch of lemons go through, usually they will work with you, my 1st Bravo 1 was my A-1 with Ghost Green Jade G-10, I also got the Woodland Special, Bravo 2, and the Golok, all with tge same color handles, so far so good, I baton with the Golok, Bravo 1, Bravo 2 and make kindling with the Woodland Special, I don't foresee the A-2 to snap but it can roll on you, mine hasn't but my friends did, I started my 3V set, starting with the Bravo 1 all will have Black G-100 handles, infact I liked my Bravo so much I cot another one since it will match my other combos, well atleast fit in well, like my Bravo 1 in 3V, my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, abd my Wicked Tough Saw a great trio that I enjoy alot, but I have other's too
