I've had my bk-7 four more than 3 years and have never thought about upgrading it, for me it is definitly the last knife ill ever need. Though i did just buy a bk-2 just for variety but i dont think most other knives can replace the overall versatility of the bk-7 especially with the weight

Get both, the Becker and the ESEE that is. My BK-7 is my go-to camp knife. I’ve had it for years and just ordered a pair of Knife Connection grips for it. I keep my ESEE 6 attached to my backpack and generally use it while hiking. I put a pair of Knife Connection G10 grips on it when it was new. They’re great grips and worth every penny.

Love my BK7! I just slipped a piece of bicycle inner tube over the grivory scales, improves traction quite a bit and didn’t cost me anything. Still need to upgrade the sheath though. The nylon sheath is not ideal, but it does work.

Great Video , Back to the Classics. I Love All my Beckers . I have a tricked out BK7 with an AZWelke sheath, I own sheaths from 4 or 5 different people and AZWelke sheaths have a great fit , they click every time you put the knife in , they're quiet and the best prices from a quality maker . I bought g10 scales from The Knife Connection , but they are thin like g10 scales for a pocket knife and felt a little blocky to me , so I when with the micarta scales instead which have the same girth and contours as the factory plastic ones, there awesome . And I also stripped the coating ounce it started coming off anyway from chopping , and I put a mustard patina on it , now the knife is mine and I love it . They are great knives , just get one ...

I prefer to carry and use the BK7 (and a folding saw) over an axe of any size. I find the BK7 the best for camp tasks and bushcraft. Of course, that’s only my opinion.

Great Video...I have many of these knives. My Favorite “bang for the buck knife” ended up being he Tops Moccasin Ranger. At a 1/4” thick it has the weight, good sheath and handles. The whole package size makes it more carryable and packable for me. And I’m not sure why, but I really like the blade geometry.

I'll never understand the gripes about the grivory handle scales. Retention comes from the shape of the handle and when I'm using larger knives or machetes I don't want a lot of friction from the handle scales giving me blisters. My machetes and my Bidor parang have smooth handles and so do my Beckers (15, 5, 4 and a 2) and I prefer them that way.

I had VZ grips on a BK7 and knife connection architect scales on a BK9 and after swapping them around I feel they're far better fits for the length and weight of blades. The architect grips are more slender and lend a very nimble and agile feel to my BK7 yet seemed far too dainty for my 9. On the flip side the VZ grips felt too clunky and for my handling, seemed to pull too much weight towards the bottom of the BK7 and yet, on the BK9 they were perfect. My BK3 does not get the same love though, just wrap that sucker up in Rescue Tape and you're good.

    • @fullback118

Thanks for posting this comment - I've been debating between the VZ scales and the Knife Connection scales. Your comment is the first direct comparison I've read between them, and it gives a good contrast.

    • @CrimsonCrux
      @CrimsonCrux 2 роки тому +1

@@fullback118 I'd also add that the architect scales would be a better choice if you're working in the wet a lot but the VZ ones are certainly a good pick regardless, they run truer to the size of the original grivory handle but with far, far better traction.

  • @Regolith86

    I've owned a Camillus-made BK7 since about 2005. I recently bought a BK9 because, well, BK9.
Something I noticed right away is that the Ka-bar scales are a lot tackier than the Camillus ones. Surprisingly so, given how much people still complain about them. The Camillus ones aren't quite glass smooth, but they're close.
At one point I used a drill to make divots in them for extra grip, kind of like a golf ball, which I kind of regret because you can't really get Camillus scales anymore AFAIK, and it didn't really help much anyway. I didn't want to go the hockey tape route because I felt the handle was already on the edge of being too thick for my taste.
I ended up replacing them with Micarta scales, which then got swapped with the BK9 scales because I think the BK-9 could use the Micarta more. Not sure if I'm going to get another pair of Micarta scales for the Bk7, because the Ka-Bar ones really are a big improvement.

I do like the BK7, but I went with the Tops Apache Dawn instead. The only thing the BK7 does better is make sparks from a ferro rod. I did discover I can get good sparks using the choil area of the Apache Dawn. The ESEE 6 is another great bushcraft blade, but I prefer the more tactical shape of the other knives should I need to defend against 2 or 4 leg beasts of foul intent.

Is it not more of a Combat Blade? Feel like they sell it as such. I need a truck protection "Safe Queen" and I'm choosing between the John Ek EK44, the EK45, or the Becker BK7. If I get the Ek I'll need a new sheath. If I get the Becker I'll need to get the black Micarta or G10 AND possibly a new sheath. I don't need it to be a full on utility knife but I do USE them. Never use my safe queens (or non dedicated) knives on wood period, but your EK45 review scares me. I do cut through ropes, clothes, luggage and bags, canvas and tents, and literal hogs.

My question is, now that the BK7 cost $125 instead of $80, is it still worth it? Considering the necessary $100 upgrades? I mean, I have one, it wound up costing over $220. Plus Becker hasn't addressed this issue in over 10 years. They have only raised their prices without offering anything new or better for the customers.

Just pulled the scales off of my old Camillus-made BK-7. Skeletonized tang. The BK-2 however, was NOT skeletonized until they came out with the Gen 2 or 3 knives, depending on how you classify the changes. And yes, I really wish they had not done it. The only BK-2's I've ever seen broken, break right at the skeletonized section of the tang.

The problem with a tricked out BK 7 is end result price- once it is fully tricked out, $80 +55 +50= $185...That's a different price range than where we started by a long shot...the upgrades have now cost more than the knife. If I've got to put $185 down to make a Becker what I want...then I'd rather get a nice Tops blade or a Fallkniven.

Did the weight of the G10 handles, imrpove the chopping performance, or made it worse? The original balance, is great, because in addition to the knife design, it makes it front heavy when you want to chop , and allows you to chock up and have improved balance, for smaller tasks. How does the BK7 perform ,with micarta or heavier G10 slabs, compared to the original, please?!!! I want to make up my opinion, as to buy or not , micarta handle slabs. They cost a fortune here. Mid weight Survival Knife Vs Hatchet/Belt Axe
Pros and Cons of each as your main cutting/chopping tool.
I don't have very much experience in the outdoors, so I'm always curious why someone would use a knife to chop with over an axe. Is there an axe that can be equal or even be superior to a knife as main tool in the woods or is the belt knife king? If you were to pick a belt axe, which one would you use? Do you know anyone that prefers an belt axe over a belt knife?
I would love to hear your thoughts (or see a video) on this. Thanks! :D

CRKT Wood Nobo or Chogan Tomahawks used with the right Baldrick Rig (shoulder or belt) are extremely useful in the field. Chops as an small axe/hatchet, remove head to use blade as a knife for various tasks, skinning, etc. Nobo is a classic tomahawk design. No hammer or spike. Chogan has a hammer poll.

Mid-weight Survival Knife are under powered compared to a tomahawk in nearly every way. A 4-8 inch knife blade is best as a backup to a tomahawk. Save it for emergencies. Better to resharpen your tomahawk more often in the field.

Bk7 for actual survival/outdoor stuff, Bk2 and schrade for destroying stuff in your backyard
Fällkniven a1 beats them all tho

Sold my old car and with it went the BK2 unfortunately. The buyer is long gone lol. So the question is do I get another BK2 or the BK7?

I’m like you, I dont like Becker handle scales. I dont like the handle design of the other Becker you showed. So, what is the next best comparable knife to the BK7 without having to “UPGRADE”? Also, I dont like finger choils like on the Esee

Are you sure that’s a “mid weight”? That’s way on the large end. It’s literally a heavy weight to be lugging down the trail.

John Smith well maybe for some people. A heavy weight would be (for me) an 8.5-10+ inch blade length. A 7” blade is is pretty normal size for some.

Nah... poor performer, its a good prybar, but it cuts like a cheap chinese knock off. Also almost all of the Strongarms I have seen, not only had that bad main bevel geometry. but also the had unacceptable uneven edge bevel lines. I have seen 5 dollar Chinese knives, that had way better edges. Another problem, is the very thin handle, on a very thick blade... It should be the exact oposite for a knife like that, take for example the Ka-Bars... Only good thing about the Strongarm, is the sheath. It's limited to urban use and for tacticool guys, knife collections...

Somehow this doesn’t add up .. y put approx 200 dollar on knife, handle and sheath and upgrade .. don’t we have better option at that price range ? If i get this knife for lower cost then that’s what i need and that’s how much I can spend .. I would not buy and waste money upgrading

I would put my Blackhawk Tatang (1085C, 8.6" blade length, 13.5" overall, .25" thick blade, exactly 1# weight) against any of the three you mentioned in the video.

Excellent knife and IMHO better knife than ESEE 6 that you push due to profile (I had ESEE 6 and gave it away), The only advantage that ESEE has is the finger troil but the damn thing just doesn't grab regardless of how sharp it is, and you can see it in all your videos of ESEE, yet you claim otherwise. FYI, many just no longer trust your reviews since you're just pushing products of your various reseller sponsors and don't do an honest review!!!
