Luckily, an open source VR headset is nearing release. The Somnium VR1 will be shipping in the next several weeks along with the planned release the CAD files and source code (at least mostly, as the hand tracking module is closed-source Ultraleap).
Although it is designed and priced for ultra-enthusiasts as it costs around the same as an Apple Vision Pro, it seems to be heading in the right direction as they have future modules and software planned (e.g. possible future wireless module and SLAM tracking) along with current discussion for Linux support. Granted, these future developments are just tentative, but if they become successful, I wouldn't be surprised if they start planning a more affordable headset as well.

VR on Linux is pretty much the same as gaming in general on Linux. I have no problems right now on my Valve Index - granted I dont play many games because Beat Saber is so addicting
Edit: The passthrough camera doesn't work though

I have a Valve Index and SteamVR works VERY well on Linux, It didn't used to be this good, but now I can play all of my steamVR titles on linux, including Hubris which never used to work.

Sure in terms of near sociolisation VR doesn't win, cant show your mum a video on your screen, but it does in staid improve long distance interaction. With social apps like VR Chat, or my preferred Resonite, you can interact in more connected way with people who are too far away for you. Resonite especially cool feature is you can spawn stuff in. Images, Videos, 3D models, Zip Files. You can even share a working WinRar trial CD. Even Plex and Jellyfin work inside Resonite. Being able to watch a movie in VR with friends is far better experience then watching it while in voice chat app sitting alone at your desk.

I see VR more ike an inevitable future. It just depends on such an challenging amalgame of tehnologies that progress is slow.

I think Matt needs to do actual research on VR before complaining about it. There's so much VR games out there that are good or have VR support. People don't necessarily want just CoD or Fortnite, and companies not taking the popular VR titles to sell their headsets with is not the fault of there not being games or good games, they are just huge corpos and don't want to do shit. Also FPS gamers don't just play CoD, there's shitton of popular FPS games. Mainly when it comes to pc FPS gamers, they will play anything. From your CoD and Halo, to Insurgency Sandstorm, Valorant, CS, TF2, XDefiant, The Finals, etc... I could be writing for hours, there's too many FPS games. So it's not about huge brands, it's about not advertising any games at all with their headsets. As there are also lots of AAA games for VR. Skyrim comes immediately to mind, from the ones Tyler didn't mention.
There's also a lot of VR headset companies, just they're not standalone headsets(also Pico is asia/china focused, then there's few headsets they released in EU, tho no NA releases - that's why Tyler doesn't know about them). You have tons of WMR and Steam VR headsets out there. That range from small fov to huge fov, 5k displays, facial tracking. There's a ton of full body tracking solutions nowdays, that range from open source and cheap to steam vr base station trackers that are expensive to movie grade solutions. Also Steam VR has come a long way in the past year in updates to make VR better, not just on windows but also Linux, which was not their focus at all before.
VR is a very social thing, just virtual, as you would guess from it's name. VR chat and Resonite are 2 biggest social platforms, where tons of people end up in, because they're free and have so much to offer. There's raves, horror games, golf, hangout, drawing, roleplay, larps, etc, just within social vr platforms. A lot of the times Linux support is also pretty good for the native VR games, since a lot of the game studios are smaller and have someone who is a linux guy in there, so they don't try to actively block proton support. If something is broken then thats just the nature of playing games trough proton, sadly.
Also I don't think anyone was waiting for apple to revolutionize anything, since apple always does it's own thing, people maybe had hopes for some competition, which did happen as because of apple, meta is opening up their platform a bit - and improving it as well. Obviously not making it open source, but they will not be the only ones making standalone headsets any more, as now any company can use meta os, hopefully without meta accounts, hopefully cheaper, and more mainstream. Which would again make some more competition which drives prices down and innovation up.

I was really sold into VR a few years back. I used Windows MR, and Oculus Quest 2. I feel that now that the only way VR can really take off is if companies like Meta, Microsoft, Apple, Valve, etc. really embrace open sourcing the technology on these devices. Independent developers are the ones who will bring some real purpose to owning these. Everything that exists already in these "walled gardens" is just too gimmicky in my opinion.

You haven't needed a Facebook account for Meta hmds for some time, you just need a Meta account which doesn't even require using a real name and is no different to any other platform. And, while price certainly has a big influence on VR/MR sales (as demonstrated by Quest 2's success and the recent spike in sales for PSVR2 after dropping the price), the biggest barrier for VR gaming remains motion sickness and for MR it is that the technology is still in its infancy and was overhyped in the Magic Leap days and has now been merged with VR and most recently rebranded to Spacial Computing by Apple. One of the biggest changes in VR in the Quest 2 era has been the shift from an adult demo to many more teens and preteens, which as much as people complain about will likely bode well for the future growth of the technology.

VR/AR Linux needs more love and development! Its the future and Linux should not miss it and give again another company product like Windows back in 199X or Android back in 200X a head start that is hard to compete against later. Well, Linux works very well for people that are using the keyboard sitting on a chair in front of a desk or at a notebook. But in the future people will lay down on a couch or a comfy garden chair and will use an AR device to do things. Well, I bought an Xreal Air and I am using it more often to watch movies in bed or on the couch or on the futon or in the trainetc. and if the battery of my UMPC was not drained relatively fast, I would attach a wireless keyboard to it like I already do at the desk and would do other stuff I normally do with a keyboard on normal Linux (Arch btw.). but guess what, this thing does not realy work out of the box on Arch for me, only on my ugly Android and a thing like Samsung Dex that gets me a mouse environment on the AR glasses and a topuchpad on the Android-UMPC sadly doesnt exist in the normal Linux world. Hell even a good virtual keyboard for all(!) the languages in the world does not exist for normal Linux for common touch devices. Well, Linux is just way behind for those modern things and that should be changed as soon as possible! I dont need the tenth tiling window manager or hundredth Linux distro where only the the options menu is different or the thousandth text editor or another terminal where you can change the color of the prompt with Gimp or whatever or a big discussion what font should be uses in one of the hundred GUI environment. I need good touch support and also good VR/AR support so that I can use some of the common devices for those fields in an acceptable way, not in 10 years, for touch it should have happened 10 years ago and for AR it should be a bit usable already right now. That whats disappointing me since years already in the Linux world … T_T Linux is fantastic at the desk with a keyboard and a mouse and at the notebook (and of course server, but thats a complete different field). But the modern devices and situations? Nearly nothing … That needs to be changed as soon as possible to not fall even more behind!

I agree with Matt on this one, the VRs look ridiculous and they can't be good for your eyes. I loathe seeing the people walking around with these monstrosities on their noggins, they are visually offensive. You want to use it in your office by yourself to do CAD work like Drew mentioned, that might be acceptable, as long as you leave that ridiculous thing in your cubicle. Lol. Wait for something real to be built, you guys are basically driving around in a Model T and you just need to wait a bit and you will have a Mustang, technology moves fast.

Matt's constant negative attitude towards the headset is very disappointing. It's exhausting watching Tyler being excited about it and all Matt just throwing out negativity after negativity. I understand meta = bad but I would hope that you would at least be open to the technology. This kind of negative point of view on newer technology, whether it be VR or AI that stems from ignorance is not good. You should try to be a more open person.

I went back to Windows 10 for a while longer someone needs to import virtual desktop to Linux then I might think about it I give up on it for a while at least not officially I need a while to think things over even though I know Windows 10 is basically dying it's gonna be sad abandoning Windows 10 man it will probably be the last Windows I will ever use. I might decide to find a while to dual boot Linux but my hard drive isn't working properly and I might need to pick up an extra SSD.

Linux has virtual desktops. Both KDE and Gnome has them built in, and a more expanded variant (Workspaces and Activities). I think it's one thing Windows stole from Linux.

@@madness1931 I need to look at this I want a virtual reality work space in Linux I got a nice Fifth Element theme on Steam and I am afraid of it not working so I kind of panicked I don't see the virtual desktop I am looking at on Linux. Also yes I know Windows steal ideas from Linux if I were to choose between Linux and a Mac though I would go Linux I've noticed a massive FPS boost on Steam games running Linux but for some reason I am getting slow download speeds. I love emulation on it I could dual a dual boot I know it's over kill for games but I might add 20TB of HDD for Steam games and turn this computer into a Linux gaming PC later on if you know how to get a VR desktop working like in Steam running virtual reality I'm just debating on giving the distro another week I hate that Windows 10 is slowly dying man the only distro I like is the Garuda distro because I hear nothing but good things about security updates they got a fancy konsole and I love using sudo to install things now idk man I've been a Windows kid all my life this stuff is kind of new to me and feels like The Matrix I need something like lively wallpaper or something for animated wallpaper Garuda Dragonized has changed my mind but when I saw no Linux support on virtual desktop as in the virtual reality space environment I freaked out a little bit.
PS You will notice some minor butchering it's been doing it to me on Facebook to and I'm getting annoyed by it really fast sorry about that.
