I've NEVER heard virtual desktop ever say ANYTHING. That freaked me the heck out just from watching it, I would have had a panic attack if I had that play while in VR trying to configure stuff. Creepy.
youtube literally read my mind, i was on the homepage watching VR vids wondering "hey i wonder if you could use a steamde- oh ok"
great vid mate! that actually ended up working better for you than i expected haha

This was super interesting, really underrated content. Loved the video!

the rog ally has already played half life alyx at 60fps, with some minor issues
Heard a lot of people telling me to use an ROG Ally, wish I was able to enable ad rev to actually buy one 😅

Incredible!
Can't wait for you to hit 1k subs 🥳🎉🎉🎉
Just a little tip about the boundary:
If you have developer mode on (which you have since you're using Sidequest) you can go into the quest settings and press System, Developer tab, and there you have to click Enable custom settings and turn off Physical space features, it just disables the boundary and the passthrough but once you open up a passthrough game/app passthrough works perfectly.
Oh interesting, I knew it disabled the passthrough but I didn’t know it still worked in passthrough apps.
I ran into the exact same problems as you when trying to use ALVR on my arch lmao.
Also your decision to just switch to windows is fully justified, it took ages to compile on my desktop ryzen cpu, i don't even want to imagine how long it'd take on the steamdeck.
18:43
right click the audio, click audio attributes
youll see the audio attributes, set it to stereo, and then switch the embeded channels around or duplicate them until the audio sounds the same in both ears (since it was panning left, should be able to set both to embeded channel 1 and it'll do the trick)
hope this helps in the future! great video!
thanks for the help, and glad you enjoyed the video! this video was edited in davinci on ipad for a challenge that i went over in the video uploaded after that which is why i couldn’t really mess with the audio, those tools aren’t really available on the ipad version yet. ill keep it in mind if i use davinci in the future!
this is actually a very creative video idea ive never seen anyone do this nice job!
yo this is criminally underrated
Genuinely really interesting to see, I was thinking about linking my Quest 2 to my steam deck at some point and trying this but at the end of the day, it was just too much of a hassle lol. I'm impressed by the Aussie internet speeds btw god damn, mine sucked when I used to live there
Could be worth trying to use the Quest as a big screen for 2D games, and I've heard that the ROG Ally works for VR if you'd be willing to grab one of those, but otherwise yeah definitely not worth the effort. Our internet speeds have definitely gotten better, but they're still not great. Can't get symmetrical upload speeds on household plans yet, my upload is still about 10-15mbps
my upload is still less than 1 mbps@@hadesbutyoutube
Real cool thing that you've done. Suprised no one else has done this before tbh. For the audio panning issue on 18:35, you have to set your audio track to mono instead of stereo (if your editing software supports that)_
I’d usually be able to do that, I think the iPad DaVinci had some audio workflow limitations.
Rendering scale is a big factor in performance for beat saber, so turning that down to 0.7 would make things super smooth (or not perhaps in the case of steam deck)
Holy moly these videos are entertaining (:
Glad you like them!
It works for vr if you install windows

the steam deck does surprisingly well with vr as long as they're low detail (ie Into the radius). The Ryzen 7840u does do Alyx, so Deck2 will absolutely do VR.

this video is chaos, i love it lmao
i’ll make sure to record myself suffering with linux more 👍
You can disable the boundary altogether in the dev options on the quest, but passthrough doesn't work once you do that
What happens if you use a c to c usb cable to connect the steam deck and oculus together
10:51 caught me off guard 😂
W unedited video 👍crazy I was just looking at a pc handheld to buy & play on quest too, any suggestions besides steam deck ?
i probably wouldn’t recommend any PC handheld specifically for PCVR, but the comments here are suggesting that the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go are decent at PCVR.
Regarding not being able to choose where to install steamvr, you can symlink it from a different drive and it works fine
That's actually really impressive. You deserve so many more subscribers than you have. I like your videos so please don't be discouraged and stop uploading. Thanks for the quality videos.
thank you so much!! i’ll keep it up, i’m not stopping yet we’ve got a long way to go 🙏🙏
man I want the steam deck so bad. Imma buy it as soon as I save up the money from my new job. btw I subbed awesome video. sad you got more likes then subs
Wait you only have 700 subs? I was legit expecting about 100k…
Trying to do pcvr on a steam deck and a quest three with coke zero? You earned a sub.
ALVR actually offers a linux version and ive seen some people get ALVR to work. before i had my pc i used to use my steam deck for vr.
I love the lav mic on the Coke can, lmao. I could just imagine what it would sound like if you dropped it. Also, I've read that using a Quest as a virtual theater for the Steam Deck works pretty well, but I have yet to try it with mine.
definitely trying that out at some point 💀
i’ve tried the quest for remote desktop and it’s a lot of fun, haven’t tried it with the steam deck though
Thank you for doing this so I don't have to. I was really hoping to use my Quest 2 to play a few PC VR exclusive games via Steam Deck, but gonna give it a pass for now.
What if you connect the quest with a link cable, would it be possible ? And also I heared about a native steam VR app on the quest, it might work in linux but idk. Really liked the video tho !
The native Steam Link app was the one I tried at the start, but it didn’t let me connect. A Link cable would be possible, I didn’t try it because I assumed the Oculus app would use more resources than streaming via Virtual Desktop, but I’ll give it a try when I revisit this topic.
7:39 good taste in music
Cool video but even cooler album on your shelf, flower boy is top tier
Holstering my steam deck around my back so I can get almost wireless pc vr but actually good with WiFi 5
Just was randomly suggested your video, but I am interested with this possibly being a thing for I'm using wmr with an older version (yet stable-ish) of the wmr with an HP wmr headset, yes it's vintage VR at this point but most of all my rigs are older and I've gotten an i7-3840qm and 2x 980m 8gbs to run my VR headset and just about everything I've thrown at it, I wonder then if you tried something like VorpX would work in the Win partition? Or a wmr headset with the steam deck?
I’ve only got a Quest. If I get my hands on a WMR headset and revisit this topic, I’ll try it out. Although, I thought I remembered hearing something about WMR not working anymore, not sure if that would impact this.
@@hadesbutyoutube I've heard that too, I've yet too see if my copy of windows is effected by that issue as well or not quite yet but thanks for reading my comment, I'll check out some of your other videos in the near future as I enjoyed your way of presenting and found it to be quite awesome!!
That f1 reference was absolutely correct 😂
I was eventually able to run a Quest 3 with ALVR on Arch with just the AppImage and using a cable, but it took me awhile since the encoders for my Polaris GPU are terrible and I had to use software. Fortunately my CPU is powerful enough to give me a good experience.
this is so cool! good vid, and as a quest user, just use pc link😭
I have a tip, instead of running the native version of steamvr, switch the beta of steamvr to temp 1.27.5
how do you not have more subscribers lmao this was such a w video
bro i fr think you should have alot more subscribers
Was worth a try. I’ve thought about this too
I’ve heard people say it works better with other software and different settings, might still be worth a shot!
cant wait for valve to release a standalone headset in like 333333333333 years (great vid btw)
VR on desktop linux can be a bit of challenge already (can say so from experience) so very understandable you moved to windows for this experiment
At 13:01 the steam deck most likely shutdown due to either over clocking the components to handle the game and that takes more power so it most likely died but it could’ve overheated
Btw you also get better performance if you set steamvr to a pre 2.0 version in the betas tab in properties and I can get 90+ fps in beatsaber on a vive
oohhh, good to know, i'll keep it in mind next time i try this
the way you record things is weird but i like it
this is so underrated (i'm watching this again)
painfully underrated youtuber:
This is hell
Gud job
UNDERATED
somehow it connects better if you use the hotspot off the steamdeck windows for quest
as a fellow neckbeard (-ish) VR comrade with the same specific set of niche interests and beliefs, I greatly appreciate for making this video
now I don't have to break my own stuff 🙏
you could've just used yay and installed alvr from the aur since there's probably a compiled version for arch there
DankPods at home:
I see that you use Davinci Resolve for iPad, idk if it's the same than PC but for that case of audio problem at 18:52 right click on the audio, go to attributes, audio, it should show as mono and only one channel, switch it to stereo and put the same channel that is on "left" and set it to "right" too
Hopes it'll help
i mainly did davinci for the video i uploaded after this, but a lot of the audio workflow tools available on davinci for desktop just aren’t available on iPad yet which is unfortunate
It probably wont help much but i noticed your encoding performance was extremely high which was the problem i was having with virtual desktop for a while and i finally figured out it was because i had radeon relive running while playing vr so make sure there is no recording software running on the steam deck while using vr.
Was half expecting the deck to outright explode. 💀
if you will go to 9:20 and turn on subtitles you will get Wendy's💀
i saw💀💀💀💀
he said wendy's
FWIW - I manage to use Steam VR with the Legion Go pretty decently; at least for flat games.
I just started using my legion go for pcvr games and it was incredibly easy to set up. Just got halflife alex, bootstrap island and fallout 4.
ive heard great things about the legion and rog ally for VR, ill see if i can get my hands on them if i try this again
I managed to play through most of half life alyx comfortably on steam deck. It ran at a very playable framerate at low settings but with high texture quality which still looked stunning.
This was my setup:
Windows (because alvr is worse on linux and vr games ran worse???
alvr: av1 encoding, 260mbps, foveated rendering, speed encoding preset, 60hz
for beat saber i could run with these settings
alvr: av1 encoding, 260mbps, no foveated rendering, balanced preset, 72hz, preproc AMF
that’s impressive! i’ll definitely give ALVR a shot on windows if i revisit this
11:27 “I’m a potato!”🙃
Hades: “What…”
I’ve never seen one simple word ever convey so much confusion as this guy has just done.
first I only subscribed because I saw that we both have the same old crappy Asus monitor, but after the video I would have subscribed anyway because this is top shelf content ^^
we’re struggling together 🙏🙏😔
blud is using the coke can as a mic loooooooooool
Because you used a quest. Video encoding is hard on performance for AMD APUs.
An vive first gen have quite good performance in games like beat saber.
AVLR has been the least stable PCVR way I’ve used. It loves disconnecting when I don’t set WiFi priority to the headset. No idea why it’s that way when steam link and VD are so good. If VD Linux came out a lot of people would be happy
i tried to do this a while ago with a quest 2 but i could never get it to work. i suppose its time to bust out the old vr and try windows this time
at 18:40 where ur voice goes to the left ear you can fix that by making that segment of voice mono in your editing software
If valve make a stand alone headset that can run fallout 4 vr and skyrim vr then i am buying for sure.
Problem with all of this is using Quest3 with no displayport etc it puts a lot of extra strain on already low powered APU to run the game and compress video and send it.
I love ALVR I use that when I play pcvr wireless
I have already used alvr on the SteamDeck and to solve the firewall issue I had to run it as root and I also had to use the nightly versions on both the SteamDeck and the headset to get it to connect
Really cool
Vr footage is very choppy, maybe you need a capture card
Fixed that towards the end, for some reason I decided casting to my Mac and screen recording that was the best option. I’ll screen record straight on the headset in future, seemed to work much better🙏
bro didnt want to put the mic on his sweater so he put it on the can LOL
(im new btw and i subscribed)
"I hate windows"

hey just wanted to let you know you can completely disable boundary using the developer settings
yeah ive done that before, it completely gets rid of passthrough which is annoying though
those tyler the creator cd are insane
"god forbit i try to upload anything", mate that's the realest thing I've ever heard, in my area I can get like 750mbps down but 50 up
50 mbps up is way way faster than almost everyone's upload speed (probably not many people watching this video considering the topic, of course, but most people who use computers don't anything that needs anywhere close to 50 up. Heck, even 25 up isn't a bottleneck for anything aside from file transfers. Enjoy your privelege. 😊
the videos i made that were shot on iPhone in 4K60 genuinely took hours to upload it was painful 😔
@@hadesbutyoutube thanks for the dedication.
I was able to do this. the way I did it was getting a zero-bloat version of windows 10 I got the oculus rift app and steamVR. I was able to play blade and sorcery and MinecraftVR no problem there was little to no latency and the resolution was quite bad but playable.
powershell is just widows command prompt basically and is built in to the os
Not really. It's different, and it's cross platform too. It also literally runs on the CLR (What C#, VB and F# run on) which makes it able to literally execute code directly (it's a bit of a pain tho. You're supposed to make extensions for that instead of doing it manually)
10:52 "im gonna kms😡" man dont (keep yourself safe) god created you
how did you get a steam deck in australia? i was looking at getting one but im not too keen on freight forwarding or paying a ridiculous amount through amazon
i ended up buying mine off eBay, paid *way* too much because of how new it was ($1200aud for a 64GB 😬😬) but the prices have definitely dropped a bit
@@hadesbutyoutube ive just checked and you can get a steam deck oled 512gb for around $1150, definitely a bit more expensive than buying it straight from valve but thats pretty good still
Hear me out the best case scenario for VR right now would be something similar to Q3 it doesn't have to be fancy BUT comes with not only Half Life3 + HL3 Multiplayer being able to be played in both flat and VR and comes with valves complete Source2 VR tools and to be able to actually make games and money with their tools like how Epic Games of all people are doing.
this setup makes my go insaine the phone recording from a shelf recording on a i pad useing a steam deck mac and quest 3
and dont forget the steam dack dock with its own KbM
i thrive in chaos 🙏
i'm surprised this guy makes better videos than my sister and he has less subscribers. btw how fast that looked was surprising.
you can get rid of the boundary by getting a meta dev acc and turning boundary off
