This is my workaround for case swapping the Dell Optiplex small form factor versions. These can be a huge pain in the a** to swap with the original motherboard so I figured this would make it much easier on everyone while still keeping things very cheap.

This isn’t really an optiplex case swap, it’s more of ripping out the guts of an optiplex and using it with a regular motherboard
He did explain why!
@@saucysuishi341 But it's still misleading
Agree. I mean, this is exactly how any sane person should use SFF parts to upgrade, but talk about click bait title. Definitely not a case swap so much as a cannibalization. 😂
I’m aware. I explained why I did what I did at the very beginning man!
@@RAVisuals yeah that’s my bad I wasn’t paying attention in the beginning of the video
“I case swapped this PC by building a new PC.”
😵
This is better than a normal case swap and I agree the motherboard swap is the smartest way to do it, this video completely changed how I will do my 7020 build.
Rebuilt my 3020 based on this video and some general computer literacy my PC is up and running! Used this as an excuse to upgrade my ram from the 16 the dell MB maxes out at to the 32 the new MB has.
Cant thank you enough for this video
Love to see it! 🙌 glad you were able to get the job done
Ty I've got two 7010 sff and my boys are going to love the upgrades.
what i would like to know is , do yoiu think you could get everything in an after market case , psu and all and if so what kind would you recomend, i have one with a banged up case and want to switch it
Although this is basically building a new pc this is great if your looking to upgrade later on and the cpu is always nice to re use considering the desktop was a cheap price
Thanks for this - gave me hope for our Optiplex! We have a the SFF with a i5-4570 which we have boosted with a Palit GT710 and we are tempted to go for the case swap! It's difficult to get the exact motherboard in the UK (need to import!) so I'm wondering - will the Asus B85M-E work instead of your Asus B85M-G? Comparing the manuals which I've downloaded, the E has different PCI slots (I guess that doesn't matter?), the E doesn't have a "1 x CLRTC header" (clock - so I guess that doesn't matter?) which the G has, the E doesn't have a "1 x S/PDIF Out Header" (audio so I guess ok?) which the G has, and it's also slightly different size (9.6" x 8.4" rather than the G which is 9.2" x 7.6" - I guess I'll have to check that will still fit the case?). It looks like the CPU socket and the memory slots are the same and I guess the disk drive goes in as normal (although I've never done one - any thoughts/gotchas to be aware of?). Will the B85M-E still be ok with the other parts? I guess I'll need to check that the B85M-E motherboard layout will support a large graphics card if I we decide to upgrade that in the future - anything else I should worry about? Thanks.
This is less of a case swap and more of scavenging an optiplex
true, but this is just how I personally would go about swapping the parts if you happened to have a SFF optiplex sitting around.
@@RAVisuals fair enough. Especially because those proprietary motherboards can be limited in their bios settings.
I really just wanna use one of these as a NAS, put it in a mini-itx case and add some drives, would that be a pain? is the motherboard that different? I'd be down to keep the power supply too to keep things simple.
so i have a dell sff 7010 with 16gb ram 2gb nvidia 1050, wanting to upgrade, the cpu is i5 3470, so that setup you used would support this current config i have ? and if so cost break down?
The question can you put an i7 processor in the same motherboards because I got the sff model but with an i7 4790 I was wondering is this conbable with the motherboard
Yes it is!
At this point now. Since it’s been a year, do you have any other motherboard and graphics card recommendations for this? I do want to be able to up the processor in the future as well when affordable.
Does this option allow for 4k gaming? I'm building a virtual pinball machine and want 4k option but don't want to spend thousands
Link shows a motherboard for ddr3 ram, my current board has ddr4 ram. is there a different motherboard for this?
Hello is it possible to swap cases with HP elitedesk 705 G3 ssf?. What type of case that is compatible
sir goodday to you what about the optiplex 7010 is it ok to swap it with other motherboar? thank you
are there any other recommendations for a different (or cheaper) mobo? Preferably on amazon & i also have ddr3 1600 with a lga 1150 socket
what cpu cooler do you recommend if the one you had is out of stock?
I need a case upgrade for my 7090 sff, because my psu is sitting outside since my Rtx A2000 is fat and only way to make it fit was removing the psu. Everything works so well but I really need a case upgrade recommendation.
Can u just use the same ssd with windows 10 OS from the SFF dell or do you have to do a fresh install of OS win? Thx
yes you can use the same ssd. your windows installation should be fine!
Yeah i agree at the part where the stock mobo of that sff and it small case are huge PAIN IN THE A$$ bcoz i cant improve the performance of this build with that kind of spec like change the psu to higher one and fit a full height gpu that need external power. Glad to see you make this content for people like me. Hope your channel will grow stronger! May God bless you!🤗
Thanks so much for the kind words man! More to come 👌
Could I do this same thing with a B250 K4 motherboard and an i7 9700k?
Nice vid perfect timing just got my dell optiplex 9020 sff
Love it!
do the links still work? can i still buy these and do it like in the video?
Will the motherboard work for an Optiplex 3040? (Intel i5 - 6500)
Will the motherboard work with a 7010 sff?
Have opportunity to get this board second hand. It has only one chassis fan so are those molex fans in front on the Antec or on a fan splitter cable? And also, can this board use DDR3L ram? I have 4 sticks or 8gig each, 32 total and this board has 4 dimms.
Yeah i had to use molex fans to get them to work. Also yes it says this board tops out at ddr3 32gb i believe so you should be good
@@RAVisuals Tnx for the reply.
Does Dell official have a kind of list of compatible Dell to Dell swaps? Or some other site? Thank you 🤓 found a tossed out Dell Optiplex 7010, but the case got messed up! System works, has i7 3770 3.4 Ghz, 8 GB RAM Win 10 Pro & have a Vostro 230. The Vostro case is in pretty good shape, but it doesn't work / run. Looks like some water damage, as there is some noticeable corrosion on the inside.
hopefully you can answer my question. i wanted to do a swap like yours, but do i need another license for windows? or the original one can load up without problem? thanks
Your windows license should stay with your hard drive
Does the motherboard linked have usb 3.0?
Do u have to use the b85?
Do you need to reinstall windows?
does this also work for the 5040
whould this work with a opteplex 4050 sff?
the mother board you linked isn't the same one will it still work tho??
yes! still the same chipset
but what about the ssd? where does that go?
Thx for the tips I got the same exact pc and I’m thinking about case swapping to
Great video man thanks
Why are there no adapters for sff?
What would be a better CPU for this motherboard? Im looking to upgrade maybe a step or 2 higher.
I think you could go also with the i7 4790. it's the best i7 before the k version the 4790k.
the i7 4790k is the fastest cpu the optiplex 9020 supports
I appreciate this video👍🏾. My main PC died so I had to dig my 3020 (old reliable) back out. So I want to swap it into my main case. 😁Thank you!
Greetings from Brazil! I have an Optiplex 7070 SSF. I can't just adapt it in a case or do I necessarily need to change the motherboard?
I think you could but u would have to keep the power supply or have to buy adapters bit i dont know if they make them
I bought a Q87M-E/CSM and I did it but it’s not booting
What about the ssds oh ye and also im doing this becasue i just bought a amd radeon rx 580 8gb gddr5 for my dell optiplex 3020 not relizeing this hole time i didnt have big enough power supply thankfully i didnt out it in there with that psu so know i gotta do all this becasue of the psu
What other motherboards would you recommend?
Can the CPU fan in the optiplex be used in the new motherboard or is that propietary too?
Yes bro you can I used
Umm can the mother board fit an i3??
can this case swapping method work with hp prodesk 400 g5 sff ....please suggest if not ....and love from india❤❤
What fan did you use for the front of the pc?
Just a random black case fan I had laying around!
This deserves so many more views
Can you do this with a 7040???
is there any other option
?
how to RGB work front panel without a 3pin header
i have a elite desk 800g2 im planning on case swapping can anyone help
Love your video, and am following this method from now on. But just wanted to let you know that your link for the mobo now takes you to a dual ddim slot board instead of the quad.
I have a i5 optiplex 9020 mini tower can I do this with that??! Plus what about boot start up what do I do once I’ve transplanted all my pc?
Yes… all he used was the cpu, hard drive, and ram
@@chrish1695 ok my man thanks I was just wondering as there is sff is slightly different on the motherboard to mine
Is it better than the original motherboard?)?
Just got a 5050 do you think I could case swap it??
I'm going to dive into the newer generation of optiplex as soon as I can get one at a decent price
Can you do a dell optiplex 3060 case swap?
Will that motherboard take an i7 CPU? I want to put in a full tower.Well mine is the DELL Optiplex 7010 Desktop Computer
yes if you haven't figured it out already it definitely will take pretty much any generation of i7 cpu
Where did he pull an ssd from
Dose all the wiring work with the new motherboard
absolutely. Its just plug and play
Awsome video man.
Thanks man!
what about the 5040?
Nice work. I might do this when my SFF PC gets old 🙂
It’s so easy! I definitely recommend it
I kind of have to now lol. I upgraded it and things got more complicated 😂
I kinda want to do this the other way around. I kinda like these little dells they are classy haha
Thanks for the case swap videos- one thing to note, I have both 3020 and 3010 SSF and they swapped right into gaming cases. The HD Audio and front USB fit with no adapter, and I just used the factory power switch although it’s the same 5 pin as the full tower so the adapter kit would work fine. Also it’s worth noting that the 3010 comes with a 24 pin motherboard power connector so you don’t even need to use an adapter.
Can you do that with a optiplex 5050 mt too?
but RA, my question is, will that motherboard work w the Dell Optiplex 3020 so that I don't have to buy the adapters?? cause this looks even more easier
Yes it will! You just pull out your processor, ram and hard drive and use the new motherboard. It’s so easy!
@@RAVisuals niiiicee
What about the CD drive, does the case support that?
you can get a case with a cd drive and youre done
How the he!! did you put the fan on bc my pins keep popping off
I did that with mine the first time around too but you have to make sure it’s they’re rotated correctly for the fan posts to fit and snap in
Where did u put the hard drive?
Up your butt and around the corner.
Whats a good graphics card upgrade for this pc?
the 970 I used in the video is a great option!
Right the way I "swapped" my Optiplex. Just sold it and built another one at same expense.
Absolutely agree this is the smartest way to do this. There are adapters out there for the fan/PSU/drive cables but by the time you total all those things and jerry rig them into a full ATX case and then you cant access the front IO with extension cables a new MOBO is looking really affordable haha.
Thank you so much bro 🙌🙌🙌
of course!
Pls how about changing the motherboard without changing the case
The reason for changing the case is to allow you to accommodate a larger power supply and graphics card.
Thanks for giving me the confidence to try this with my lenovo m720s lol
Even with buying a new board im at least saving like 300-400 on the cpu and ssd, which is especially nice because its a newer office pc with an i7 that i managed to find FOR FREE
Help me guys. I have a dell computer (optipx 9020 sff) its process pin 1 is damaged can you give me the dell computer motherboard you removed 🙏
can i turn a dell vostro 230 into a gaming pc
I believe so! I've done a video on a vostro and I made that into a very very cheap gaming rig
That was the easiest SFF case swap, now, when swaping the MB, did you have to update the BIOS or anything besides just moving processor and RAM from one MB to the other and then to the other case? Great tutorial!
Nope! I just swapped it over and it worked perfectly
Tried this didn’t realize that I needed a new motherboard I got a whole new psu and realized nothing fit
I love how recent this is. I have a 3020 SFF. Was on a budget and got a few Labor Day deals I got a i7 4790 new for $99 and a GTX 1660 super for $200. A power supply and SSD for like $60 I think. Now I just have to save up to buy a new mother board and case so I can really get the most of my 1660 super. For anyone wondering my case is wide open because the graphic card is too big and I had to cut out the entire back right side so it would sit in the pcie slot lol. It’s a struggle build but one day I’ll be able to upgrade
Nice man! Yeah, a bigger case for your card will be ideal for airflow and just looking much more clean 🙌🏼
@@RAVisuals the time is coming lol almost there. I love your content man, thank you for the reply. Looking forward to watching your upcoming content. Thank you for the step by step process with reasoning behind it.
@@Pot_is_Power much appreciated my man! No worries at all. Just trying to help people out and have fun with some tech in the process 🙌🏼
What kind of SSD did you get ?
@@guts3309 Vulcan Z 1 GB and it’s more than enough when matched with the old 1 tb HDD that came with the Pc
I case swapped a 9020 sff a few days ago and I got everything working, power button, usb 2.0, usb 3.0. except the mic and audio. also yeah aliexpress has adaptors for the 8 pin power and also fan headers on the motherboard so you dont need to compromise that much. i mean it was $15 worth of adaptors vs whatever a motherboard costs
Hey just emailed u man. Ur motherboard link doesn't work any more and I thought I did all my research on the computer I just brought refurbished from Amazon. It's a 5040 sff so need a little help. If u wouldn't mind
This exactly what i looking for. mine is Dell optiplex 7020 SFF,with i7-470k. Thank u for this guide video.u got a like n sub😘
A new motherboard is just one giant adapter though :P
Can the dell 3020 put a graphic card
Yes it can!
How long does it take to swap pc case? By 1day is it possible?
yes. I did it in an hour or so
@@RAVisuals nice 👌🏻
will a 1650 work in it ?
yes!
Nice work
its dell 365W enough for rx 570 4gb strix?
From my testing I believe it was if its the stock card and not overclocked
@@RAVisuals thenks
Does this work on a 7010
yes it should!
You put the old hardrive to a new MB, You are running the new PC with the Windows OS from Dell ? Or you have to buy a new copy of Windows ? I thought OS from pre-built PC cant transfer to a new machine . Thanks Lee
All correct! But no this one just booted to the windows screen. It showed a “hardware change” the first time I booted but the second time went straight to the desktop!
@@RAVisuals Thanks for your reply ...If I want to keep the existing Window OS , I cant swap the MB. This project is for people who want to use old parts , to build a new PC which require a new copy of Windows OS.
@@j.d.salinger2317 I did exactly that and can still use the copy of windows that was on the optiplex! It just accounts for the new hardware and allows you to use windows normally! I didn’t reinstall windows or anything with this swap
Yes let’s go video finally out!!!
Yessir!! 💪🏼
Will this work with the intel i5-4590?
of course
Hey ra visuals, I’ve been watching your vids for month now , super awesome content love your vids by the way ❤ I own a Dell optiplex 9020 mt with i7 4770, what would you recommend for me for a graphics card? I’m new to pc and I mainly wanna play the new call of duty over 60fps, I am willing to upgrade my power supply. Thanks man love your vids ❤
So sorry i missed this comment man! With that mini tower, you have a ton of options for a gpu upgrade! I have a full video I did a couple years ago explaining a bunch of cards that would be great for your exact system!
Can I use any case I want? Or only a atx case? Or is it a special case? And if there's any space in the case like in yours, What can I build in there in the free place? I just want a lot of rgb😂
This would actually work best with a micro atx case or a smaller atx case given that the motherboard I change to is micro atx.
Thanks for your response.
But I think your case was an atx case and not an micro atx case.so can I also use an atx case?
