  • In this video I upgrade and replace the front shocks in my 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 with Bilstein 5100 series. The install was very easy and straight forward with just a few nuts and bolts. This process should be very similar with Tahoe, Yukon, Silverado and Sierra. www.1roadgarage.com

    I put these on my 2012 f150, front and rear. Great upgrade. I had put 35/12.50/18s with a 2.5 level kit on the stock suspension and the steering wheel wanted to jump out of my hands at every bump. With the bilstiens there is virtually no movement and the overall ride improved 100 percent. The only downfall is I lost about a half inch in the front,I just had to trim a little more plastic.👍🇵🇱🇺🇸

    @1 Road, I followed your exact procedure here however, just a note for everyone else, on a 2002 Suburban the top nut is a 15mm not a 14 like yours. The bottom bolt as well is a 21mm not a 1/2 inch as yours.

    For 2WD GMT800 trucks, it is slightly different that uses springs over the shocks instead of torsion bar. Top is the same but bottom is 2 bolts, then drops right out. There is no need to mess with the spring but if they're worn, it would help to spend the extra $100 for pair of replacement springs.

    Replaced my shocks with Billstein 5100 but I HAD to change the Sway bar with a Hellwig because the shocks are more aggressive, and the stock sway bars will make the truck feel like flipping over. With the Hellwig and 5100s my truck drives like my Car. Soaks up bumps, and less body roll

    I dont understand what the difference is with front ends that just have the shock only and front ends with the shock and spring coil. My 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 2WD has the whole strut assembly so it doesn't seem as easy to replace as this. Any help is appreciated.

    • @abelscaliber7969
      @abelscaliber7969 4 роки тому +2

      I know this is 11months past due but I hope you learn something. The GM trucks with only Front shocks have torsion bars that run under the truck into the lower control which act as a Spring. While other 2wd GM trucks of the same year have coil springs and Shocks. Your truck does not have a Strut assembly. It has Coil and shock . GM trucks didn’t come with strut assembly until 2007NBS . Some GM 2 wd trucks do come with torsion bars but it’s rare.

  • @MrOlea
    @MrOlea 5 років тому +6

    Those front shocks were not original. They should have been blue with a much larger top dust cover. Also GM uses real beefy bushings for the top that have a metal sleeve that goes through the bottom hole and mated to the top bushing. I just replaced my front shocks on my 06 4x4 yukon and at 140K miles they were still in decent shape. It took a lot of force to push them down. I used Bilstein 4600 in the front with new GM top bushings. It rides better. The rear I left alone with the beefy load leveling shocks. Let us know how the rear rides after the spring and shock upgrade.

    the 4600 and 5100 are no different when it comes to actual performance and dampening. The only difference between the two is the aesthetics and the ability to put a minor lift on the vehicle with the 5100s. Hey Jimmy,
    Great videos!! I've got a 1995 GMC k1500. I think the previous owner adjusted torsion to clear larger than stock tires. Beyond that it's a stock truck. I'm considering the 5100 series, do you know if the same shocks you've shown will fit my truck?? Thanks in advance!

      If you're concerned about the rear of the vehicle, you should be equally concerned about the front. Modified torsion keys is not the proper way to lift a GM with torsion bars. You should acquire a proper lift kit like the full kit from Rough Country. Modified torsion keys increase the angle of your front drive shafts and creates undo stress on the assemblies. The 6" kit from Rough Country maintains factory drive train angles. This is just friendly advice.

      @@RYTHMICRIOT honest truth rough country full lifts fuck everthing up terribly you get what u pay for. I used keys and it runs fine keep my angles good i pretty much just lifted it back to stock heigh. Torsion bars lower after a long time so ur just taking the key back to normal.
