When the time came to replace the Bilstein 4600’s on my ‘09 Tacoma, I went with the 5100’s and did a 2.5 inch lift (approximately) on the front and the back, with an add-a-leaf to accomplish the rear lift (all from Toy-Tec Lifts). The whole project took about 3 hours and the results were absolutely brilliant. Since it was a modest lift, it didn’t even impact the alignment much at all. These shocks are amazing. It is almost as if they know what type of terrain you are on and handle beautifully whether one the highway, in snow and ice or pounding a rocky trail. The rear spring addition also made towing a lot more solid.
I've had them on my 4runner for a year now and I love them. Nice ride and good response. Also they help eliminate the back tipping at take off and setup for better acceleration.
I just finished putting 5100s on my '21 4R ORP. I can confirm everything you said. The ride is definitely noticeably firmer, but not egregiously so. The handling is also noticeably tighter and brake dive, while not gone, is greatly minimized. On the brake dive, what I noticed is that, not only didn't it dive as much, you don't have that immediate, rapid dip in the nose. Instead, it's slower, more controlled. In the front, I went with the second notch (0.85" lift). For me, this makes the front wheel arch gap (visually) the same front and back, rather than the stock smaller gap in the front vs. back. Overall, I'd recommend them for an early mod, especially if you aren't planning to climb Mt. Everest with it. [edit] BTW... I did the job myself and it took me an afternoon to do it with all the jacking, removing skids, etc for the first time (Would be quicker the next time). I used the "no spring compressor" method and am a convert to it (I've changed struts on many of my other cars).
Hey that’s some good feedback, I have an off road premium 2019 with the kdss I want to level it similarly; does yours have kdss and are there any issues with using these on a kdss model if all I plan on is a .85 in the front?
Testimony time here. I had Bilstein 5100's on my 2014 Chevy Silverado 4x4. LOVED them. I sold that truck and bought a new 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 (6.2L) with Ranchos. The rear Ranchos are pathetic...so much looseness and bounce. In fact, when you are on pavement and go over a speedbump, the rear end "jounce" actually causes the tire to loose traction. Ranchos might be alright off-road, but on pavement...they don't feel controlled or planted. Just ordered Bilstein 5100's rear shocks for my new truck...and will likely get front 5100's for the front struts before too long. Great video. Stiffness (as you demonstrated in this video) doesn't necessarily "mean" rough riding. In fact, pretty much the opposite in my experience. And I am old.
I’ll agree the 5100 is the only way to go. I just installed them on the rear of my 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, I have the fronts, but need to have them installed for me with the help of a friend that works at a Chevy dealer as a technician, that has everything he needs at his home garage. I noticed a huge difference in just the rears and I know once we get the fronts mounted at the 1.5” raised high the difference will be great! I also tow a travel trailer that weighs as much as 6,500 at the most, 5,800 normally. That I have towed since the rears were added and there is NO extra rebound after crossing nearby train tracks I’ve gone o er a dozen times! I can’t wait to see off road! My last Colorado was an Ext Cab Z71, with what Chevy calls off road suspension, but the only difference I feel is the stiffness, but I’ll have about 28% more compression travel in front with the 5100, than a stock truck! I can’t wait!

This is a Great video description with a lot of passion for developing the ultimate ride. The stock 4runner suspension works very well for drivers that like the soft plush ride. Some 4runner owners don't speed up and stop short quickly. Some 4runner owners like the soft suspension and learn to break the vehicle early and softly. Many 4runner drivers do not drive aggressively. Many 4r drivers brake early enough that the "nose dive" doesn't exist. Many 4runner owners do not want a stiff and bouncy pickup truck ride. Many 4runner owners enjoy the soft plush ride of the stock suspension. Do not assume that Bilstein 5100s are a HUGE improvement over stock 4Runner suspension. This video is for drivers who desire a more racy car. This is a very well made sincere and honest video.
Doesnt that give it a sick and not useful off road rack???....here in New York we keep our trucks level for a lot of reasons. For one with you driving looking at the sky isn't good around here....two...most if the weight in the rear will cause the front wheels.to push like hell in the snow.....third....wouldn't be able to stop caus either be to late in the snow cause we would be watching the passenger jet going by instead of the vehicle that you would hit. I'm not being a jerk..cause we had a guy here that did that....2 wheel drive....couldnt see crap and piled it up....that stance is for trailer trucks....to the play area.....what did u put in the rear? Nothing and had 2-2 1/2" lift in the front only?? Thanks..
Tad Heath the truck is facing down 2-3 inches depending on the truck. It’s called rake. In order for it to be level you’d have to raise the front to equal the height on the back.
I put them on my ‘15 Silverado 3 years/24,000 miles ago hoping to get ride quality as good as what the 4600 shocks gave me on my ‘94 Silverado some years back. At first the truck seemed to ride considerably smoother, but now after 3 years of almost exclusive freeway driving (24,000 miles), my Silverado rides more like a 1969 Dump Truck. Take note the truck hasn’t been lifted or anything like that - she’s 100% stock except for these Bilstein shocks and has never been abused. I’m not impressed even one tiny bit!
@@jetboy770371 that’s a great question but I’m not sure what else might provide a smoother ride. I’m wondering if the Bilstein 4600 would give a softer ride. I had them on a prior Silverado and the ride on that truck was far more pleasant in my opinion.
@@c5back9 everything I read says do not use the 5100s on stock setups. They will be too firm. Only use 5100s on lifted and modded applications where rotational mass is increased or more weight is on the axles.
@@robertannable9584 well that makes perfect sense to me. Wish I’d seen that before putting them on because they were way too rough riding after about 15,000 miles.
I put them on my 2017 Silverado. They perform well off-road. But they seem really harsh on minor pavement bumps and imperfections during daily pavement driving. It's partly due to the LT tires on my Silverado. I wish I could compare the OE vs Bilstein back to back on the same road, but the Bilstein's seem really harsh.
So, question of the day: Do the washers go on with the concave side facing away from the bushings or cupping the bushings? I've heard both from numerous sources.
Unless you have a heavy front steel bumper and/or a winch the 6112 is overkill and more than double the cost. The difference in ride without the mentioned extra weight is negligible. With the extra weight on rough terrain it is a different story for sure and makes sense.
@@wastedyears6653 Ur kidding me right? I've had both on my truck and its a noticeable difference. The spring is responsible for holding up the weight, and 6112 springs are for stock weight loads so what you say is a moot point. The 6112 shock provides significantly smoother operation than the 5100. Just like an engine, there is no replacement for displacement. You are moving more oil through a larger valve and you get less pressure and smoother operation. Even driving in the city it overall feels better, and if you plan to actually cycle the shock off-road its worth every penny. Its as good as it gets until you step up to a full coil over from King, Fox, or similar company.
@@soldermecold7456 I realize this vine is nearly a year old. But here’s my question for you when you say there’s a noticeable difference between the 5100 and the 6112 shocks can you share more details? I’ve heard a lot of comparisons, but not really from actual owners who have used both. I have a Trd off-road. I Moving Away from the stock shocks because of that super soft ride that I do not enjoy. I wanna firm tight ride on road. And the benefits of going off road and meeting any challenges. Are the 6112’s as firm and tight on the road as the 5112’s? Thank you in advance.
@@007diego2 Sure. I have 6112s & 5100s on my 19' Ram 1500 and I just put 5100s on my wife's new Suburban; Front & rear. I have Ridge Grapplers on both trucks. 35s on the RAM & 34s on the Burban. The 5100s are much stiffer up front. They still ride great, and I love them. But you get significantly more road chatter and jarring from the 5100s. The 6112s are plush and soft in comparison. If they make 6112s for your application, I think they are well worth the extra $450 for the front pair.
Hi. Which bilstiens do you have on your Vanagon. I’ve seen several options like OME and rancheros for Vanagon’s but not bilstiens for Vanagon’s. Thanks.
I had just installed the 5100 on my 2016 4runner,,but the rear are lower by at least or around 2inch, any solutions , I thought there isnt any adjustments are to be needed,,,,I havent raise the height at the front, we had the ring at the lowest
Had to do a second take at 4:00. Sop the driver's side has an aftermarket suspension installed vs the passenger's side that's not installed. And in conclusion, an aftermarket lift will be higher than a stock non-lift. GOT IT. This video is amazin!
Stock shocks/struts on my 4Runner lasted 230,000 miles, and were still adequate. I decided to replace them when doing front end overhaul - again, nothing was wrong with any of the suspension components but I lifted it a bit and installed AM UCA's to accommodate lift and to get caster within specs. One bilstein strut blew up in less than a year of on-road driving. Their warranty is not worth the paper it's written on - the shock is $90, they demand photos (that I provided) but they also want me to send the bad part to them on my dime AND pay for a return replacement shipping if (IF!!!) they (THEY) find it defective which costs you $50. Again, it's the best case-scenario providing they DO find it defective. Otherwise, you are out of shipping cost AND have no strut. Sweet deal. NOT! It might be "german engineering" but it's mexican manufacturing and american "business attitude" towards customers.
funny the way you described the OEM shocks, my Z71 OEM bilsteins had sort of the same feeling. When I had to replace them I went with 5100's and they are a lot firmer. Instead of a cadillac ride it rides like a truck I guess.
I'm going to throw a question out to the masses. I have a 2016 4runner TRDPRO. It came with Bilstein coil over shocks on the front when i bought it new. At 39,000 miles, the passenger side coil spring was found to be broken in 2 places (I don't take the truck off road). The dealership covered the repair and new spring (Toyota Motor Company was only going to cover 30% of the cost). Then, at 89,000 miles, the driver side spring broke. I ended up putting monroe quick struts on the truck, which ride pretty nice. The only drawback is that the front ended sits a little lower than the rear (no biggy). My question is: if I eventually put the Bilstein shocks back on the truck, what would be suitable replacement springs? Thanks in advance.
Had these for 80k miles. Only upgrade from stock you get with 5100s is durability, a little down travel and the polished aluminum look of Fox, Icon, King, Radflo, 6112s, etc, etc.
Don't forget the nose dive on braking. My 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road has a lot of nose dive. Everything I see and everyone who knows says 5100s get rid of the nose dive.
My rear shocks can weirdly fucked. I could not get the bolts part through the chassis and I messaged The supplier and manufacture about it and they both said that’s the correct part number and everything but it was not because the thread was only about an inch when it should’ve been about two. I had to cut the rubber doughnut and a half on the top to get it to secure and get some thread.
Thank you so much, I have another question Now i lifted the rear of my commander with two inch RC and used belstien 5100 to make it a better lift. The front i put adjustable belstein 5100 shoks as well. At which line shall i i put the snap ring to make it even lift level with the rear.
Great review, thanks. I have an XJ and I'm looking at Bilsteins wondering if they're worth paying so much more than other shocks and this has me leaning that direction. Hopefully they're available with all the supply shortages.
bilsteins run around $350 for a 5100 setup on the XJ, spending anything less than that and you're asking to replace your shocks in another few years, which just shifts costs from good parts over to labor instead. Dont skimp
So the 5100 would you say would help with my Jeep feeling like I’m rocking side to side when I’m giving over speed bums and windy days? I know going over speed bums the Jeep with rock but it’s way too much feed back with my stock..just like firmer ride..my Jeep right now with stock shocks feels like I can easily push my Jeep overs 🫠
Hello! I just bought a WK 2010 4.7, it is totally original, I bought the bilstein 5100 shock absorbers and I am going to install them with the original springs, my question is how much do you recommend me to lift it so that it does not start to harm the other parts and if I have to lift more on the front side than the rear or the same level on, thanks a lot! This is my first 4x4
wow. do you do k1 canoeing? sprinting? Does this shock work on a Tundra well? I am looking at a 2010 limited with this shock but they also installed a swaybar and air suspension in the rear.
I might have to upgrade on my 2019 colorado. I put the readylift 3.5 sst lift kit in which claims you don't need to do anything else to the truck. But I think I'd be better off replacing the stock shocks and struts.
lifted shocks or coilovers are always superior to spacers. When using spacers alone and upgrading wheels and tires, now that unsprung mass of the new wheels and tires are wearing on the stock shocks, which wears them out faster, and obviously dampens worse.
If i’m not re-using the OEM (front) shocks that came with the 4runner and bought , let’s say a spring that gives me a 2.5” lift (constant load of 70lbs-100lbs) which circlip should i go with? Since the first circlip gives “no lifts” but i have a spring that achieves 2.5”, sorry a bit confused, someone here mind shining some light my way, thanks.
Buying a 2000 tundra tomorrow and it needs shocks ASAP. Are these a good option for the tundra? Or should I go with 6112’s? Or just save and get a lift kit?
I think 5100s are definitely a good option. I put 6112s on my FJ and they are nice and seem a bit more heavy duty for sure but I have no complaints after over a year on the 5100s. You can also do a lift with either setup now or adjust them later.
@@DrivenCompanion To abjust the lift, you need to remove the struts...maybe not too much of a pain if you can do the job yourself. The whole job is pretty easy too.
My front 5100s has a metal dust shield just like the stock 4600s,, Did you remove yours, I hope you don't remove the rear rubber boot shields, they look dumb with out them because Dust shields they are there for a reason.,. Several very high end shock manufacturers (Kings, Icons, Fox come to mind) don’t include rubber shock piston protectors because their shocks are rebuildable and boots tend to retain moisture accelerating corrosion issues and leaking around piston seals. For rear shocks they offer simple metal or plastic shields to protect piston rods from rocks but allowing water to dry. For front shocks no boots are used and the coil springs provide protection.
Depends what application, RC kits use a spacer on top of factory struts in the front of IFS vehicles, so you can use a factory height bilstein 5100 there under the spacer. on Solid axle vehicles Bilstein does have extended length shocks to accommodate a lot of 6" lift kits
Hi Mike, for the 4Runner, do you have any recommendations for plastic fender flares that are not the bushwhackers. Im not a huge fan of the visible screws on the fender.

Nice video! Quick question, may the Blisteain 4600 Toyota Tacoma set fit into a 4th gen 4Runner? (4cyl) I think I need to change the bushing only to make it fit! I had Rancho 9000 in the past into my old Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and I loved, in the highway was like a Ford truck and excellent in offroad I hear Blistein 4600 is a bit softer than 5100 and I m 99% of the time in City and Highway so comfort and control is my priority, but with better performance, if I go offroad! Thanks!
I have a 2013 Tacoma TRD Off Road with stock suspension. Since 5100's are stiffer does that mean if I install them that my truck bed won't sag/sink as much if I load it with stuff? I have stock height at the moment which is 2" higher in back than front. I'm thinking I'd like to just go 1" in front which will make the back just 1" higher than the front but I don't want the rear to have that sill looking sag if I put stuff in the bed. I"m not a big hauler and don't load the bed much and I don't use the truck for work or anything but just curious. With one inch higher in back can I still put some camping gear in the bed and not sag all the way to my destination?!!
5100s wont affect how your truck sits. If you're worried about sagging in the back I would only lift the front 1" more than the rear and you'll be good. ie. you could lift the front 1" and leave the rear at stock height, lift the front 2" and the rear 1", front 3" and rear 2", etc.
@@DrivenCompanion Thanks for the reply Mike, I guess I thought with 5100's you could weigh down the back more and not sag as much as you would if you had the stock suspension. The reason I thought this was because you showed in your video how soft your stock 4 Runner shocks were by simply pressing down on them and seeing how easily the gave in. Then you tried to press down on the 5100's and they didn't give at all. I thought that would translate to a firmer truck bed.
Hello, I just have 1 clear question please. I want to keep my 4runner as stock height, so the rear shock Bilstein 5100 is to be replaced instead the original one and thats it ? With the stock rear springs ? Does it stay the same height in the rear ? Thank u
Yes, I had that problem before on a tahoe. Spring was wore out so bad it put all the weight on the kind I had (not these though) and had learned my lesson
So once they are installed, how easy is it to adjust for a different height front and rear? It looks like a little bit of a process to install initially, but if I want to adjust to a new slot is it pretty quick?
One of the things that makes me regret going for the Limited than the TRD Offroad is the apparent ride difference. My Limited could not in any way be described as having a "cadillac from the 80s" ride, which is what I am looking for (I like plush ride over a skateboard ride). Also, I like the all-mode 4wd on the TRD as opposed to the AWD on the LImited. The only thing that made me so excited about the Limited was that I liked its exterior looks better.
@@eatcommies1375 that, and the spring rate is different on the TRD and the Limited. Apparently one is tuned for a more stable highway ride while the other for more comfort offroasd.

Mike, I was told by a vendor that I would probably tell no difference with the 5100's. I am wanting to keep the same height, but get rid of the floatiness. We used to have 2001 and 2003 Pathfinders that had a stiffer/sportier ride. So, you are saying that is what they would give us??? Had you ridden/driven a stock 4Runner that just had the 5100's?? Wondering how you knew that they would give a sportier ride if you are just now putting them on. Thanks!!!
You will definitely notice a difference in stiffness with the 5100s. I have a friend with 5100s on his Tacoma and had done quite a bit of research ahead of time indicating an improvement. Having driven it a while now the float is far improved.
@@DrivenCompanion Quick update: Replaced the oem with 5100's on our 2018 4Runner and it feels more connected to the road and less floaty. Your video convinced me to get them! Thank you!!
Hey Mike, i would like to have your opinion on rear shocks before please an order for a set of Bilsteins for my ‘19 4Runner. (3” lift front - 2” rear) OE Koito shocks we’re almost fully extended occasionally on speed bumps or potholes. I went ahead and install a pair of OME Super charger 60080 for longer travel on the rear suspension, the result was a really stiff ride, nothing comparable with a sporty ride. My 4Runner feels like a brick even with plenty of weight in the cargo area, Honestly don’t like the ride right now. I can hear how everything moves and all vibrations inside the vehicle (awful) what I’m looking for is a soft ride with a 2” longer travel, that’s all. Will Bilsteins 5100 be the right ones? Are Fox shocks soft like Koitos? What’s your experience with your 4R? I may be one of the few that like the original soft ride Lol. Thanks in advance!
The 5100's have stiffer valving than the OE shocks, but do offer greater travel. So they will solve some of your issues but won't ride as soft as the OE shocks over small bumps at lower speeds I've found that they smooth out the faster I drive, which is not always an option obviously. How well they work for you might also depend on what spring/spacer package you used to get your 2" rear lift. I like the rear 5100s but my usage, doesn't include alot of potholes/speedbumps. Which I can imagine wouldn't be great on my setup. I drive more highway and desert off road where speeds stay better in the sweet spot. I have wanted to try the ome rears, but I don't think they will pair well with my modified rear suspension situation.
so wait, you buy suv to make it ride like a sporty car? i am confused. i was actually considering those for my f150, but after this review, no way. i want my comfort
Agreed. I don’t know why so many in the off-road world want stiffer shocks...? I understand not loving body roll and disliking nose dive, but I would rather have that than my teeth rattled out of my head on washboard which is what they digressive tuned 5100’s do. If I were you, look into progressive or linear tuned shock. Costs more, but much better overall. The 5100s aren’t bad and are a decent value because they are cheap. Just don’t suit my ride preference... Of course, my 4Runner is a 16 Trail with KDSS so it handles well based on the fat sway bars which is the best way to address handling, not with shocks...
I have Bilsteins on my TRD Tacoma , hes not explaining it clearly to people who don't have them. They travel very well , but not when they don't need to travel....Comprende? Like that floaty , feeling less sure footed on all terrain. The memory is faster for stability , but at the same time , smooth as Jessica Alba's lips. If you don't know who that is, Look it up.
people misconstrue what stiffer/firmer means in the context of vehicle suspension. We like the term sportier, which means tighter handling and bump compliance/recovery. So instead of the vehicle wobbling for 2 or 3 wave-motions after a speed bump, it will only be 1 or 2 motions.
yes, especially if the rears aren't bilstein. Bilstein is a digressive shock, so tighter handling, and if the rear doesn't match that kind of valving, then you'll have oversteer behaviors
Mike, I know you have raised your 4Runner multiple times using different settings. How was the ride in terms of balancing response (stiffness) and ride quality degradation when you raised the c clip to the higher settings? I am thinking the tallest setting will be too stiff, however, I also have 2" Bilstein coils for the rear so I'm wondering what it will look like with the factory coils on the front Bilstein's will look like set at the 2" slot (1.75" actual but I could be wrong) 3rd space on the shock. And I'm assuming I don't want to use an aftermarket coil with the 5100's. I don't mind some rake if that helps with your recommendation. I don't want a squishy Cadillac ride but then again I don't want a stiff Ferrari wagon-like ride either. The rake is ok if it stays around factory look but I'd rather the rear not be any taller than factory differences between the front and back (2"). I hope this wasn't too confusing. Sincerely, Charles
@@Cosmicsurfpro I'm debating on the 5100s maxed out with a shim possibly or the 6112s to get a 3 inch lift. Do you know how the difference in ride quality is?
Same here, but on my ‘01 Tacoma. These are great.
I've had them on my 4runner for a year now and I love them. Nice ride and good response. Also they help eliminate the back tipping at take off and setup for better acceleration.
Thank you for being concise! No massive lead up or self aggrandizement BS. Straight up facts!
5100s on rears from 2013 to 2020. Still good. Boots went hard but shocks are fine. Great shocks. Off-road almost every day too.
they last a long time for sure!
Thanks for the adjustable ring explanation. It helped me figure out what's wrong with my car's height and horrible ride.
Got these on my 2000 grand cherokee WJ with a 3 inch lift...very nice ride and response

It’s looking good. Heads up, you may need a jack block or a different jack in case you ever get a flat due to that increased wheel travel.
Good point. Hadn't thought about that...
Or just jack it up from the lower control arm where the flat is. That's what off road guys do.
Can’t compare old worn parts with new parts.
Even more reason to replace with bilstein. And it's a newer 4runner, imagine what the stock suspensions on 4th gens are

This is a very well made sincere and honest video.
on order, cant wait
If you want it level use the top clip we use 5100 and 6112 all the time at work
Doesnt that give it a sick and not useful off road rack???....here in New York we keep our trucks level for a lot of reasons.
Is there another shock that you would rather have put on now knowing this ?
I've heard both from numerous sources.
cupping the bushings
@@ShockSurplus Thanks!
Those slots you showed for the lift inches is for a coil over which means nothing for regular shock.
5100 is ok... good OE replacement. I think the 6112 is a much better shock with a much better ride. Really good value too.
Even without extra weight added?
I have Bilstein shocks on all of my VW's. (Westy, TDI Tourareg, 2017 AllTrack) Solid product!
Hi. Which bilstiens do you have on your Vanagon. I’ve seen several options like OME and rancheros for Vanagon’s but not bilstiens for Vanagon’s. Thanks.
I have same question, which model Bilstein on your Touareg? Did it change your height or travel of suspension?
Can i add 5100's to the front to level my tundra? And keep rear suspension stock?
Had the same issue... installed 5100 on 2016 4R...rear is lower by almost 2 inches or more....no adjustments has been made.
I had just installed the 5100 on my 2016 4runner,,but the rear are lower by at least or around 2inch, any solutions , I thought there isnt any adjustments are to be needed,,,,I havent raise the height at the front, we had the ring at the lowest
Running 5100 series ride height adjustable strut on my 2014 Silverado on highest ring along with rear shocks. Definitely better then stock.
How does it ride on the highest ring? I'm trying to decide for my 2015 silverado if I should do the highest ring or the next one down
Had to do a second take at 4:00. Sop the driver's side has an aftermarket suspension installed vs the passenger's side that's not installed. And in conclusion, an aftermarket lift will be higher than a stock non-lift. GOT IT. This video is amazin!
Can I get the 5100 ARH just the shock and use my stock springs at the highest setting???
I concur I have them on my JK. Think I'll just get Rabcho next time
funny the way you described the OEM shocks, my Z71 OEM bilsteins had sort of the same feeling.
Just put some on my late 80's SR5 and what a difference it makes on the trails or city driving!
👍
I put them in my tahoe also an rides like new again!
Had these for 80k miles. Only upgrade from stock you get with 5100s is durability, a little down travel and the polished aluminum look of Fox, Icon, King, Radflo, 6112s, etc, etc.
Totally disagree, 5100 shocks improved ride , stability and tracking thru curves dramatically over Stock,
Bilstein pumps them up tighter, slowing compression and increasing rebound. That's it, but whatever makes you happy.
Thank you so much, I have another question
Now i lifted the rear of my commander with two inch RC and used belstien 5100 to make it a better lift.
The front i put adjustable belstein 5100 shoks as well. At which line shall i i put the snap ring to make it even lift level with the rear.

Can't wait to see the final product
Great review, thanks. I have an XJ and I'm looking at Bilsteins wondering if they're worth paying so much more than other shocks and this has me leaning that direction. Hopefully they're available with all the supply shortages.
bilsteins run around $350 for a 5100 setup on the XJ, spending anything less than that and you're asking to replace your shocks in another few years, which just shifts costs from good parts over to labor instead. Dont skimp
Just got them today but I'm curious about the zip tie around the flex tube.....do I cut the zip tie off?

What kind of spacers did you use for the rear? Did it come with some or you bought some?
I left the rear at stock height
wow. do you do k1 canoeing? sprinting? Does this shock work on a Tundra well? I am looking at a 2010 limited with this shock but they also installed a swaybar and air suspension in the rear.
Yo what’s my limit on block on the Bilstein in the back can I put 2inch blocks
I might have to upgrade on my 2019 colorado. I put the readylift 3.5 sst lift kit in which claims you don't need to do anything else to the truck. But I think I'd be better off replacing the stock shocks and struts.
lifted shocks or coilovers are always superior to spacers. When using spacers alone and upgrading wheels and tires, now that unsprung mass of the new wheels and tires are wearing on the stock shocks, which wears them out faster, and obviously dampens worse.
Can it be drop a little lower? I wanna put this on my armada
Can I use the 5100's on a Stock 2wd 1500 Silverado?
Depending on what year your Silverado is, stock height usually uses 4600 series
How is the ride now off road? Does it make for a harsher ride on gravel roads at all?
How can I adjust the snap ring ? Is it easy ?
Its relatively easy, but you have to have them off the vehicle to do so.
Like tacoma world...one install or standing next to an install makes them an expert....CALL BISTEINS TECH LINE PEOPLE!!!!!!!
Does bilstein make a shock or strut that will work with a 6” rough country lift?
Depends what application, RC kits use a spacer on top of factory struts in the front of IFS vehicles, so you can use a factory height bilstein 5100 there under the spacer. on Solid axle vehicles Bilstein does have extended length shocks to accommodate a lot of 6" lift kits
@@ShockSurplus that’s what I thought. Really sucks they don’t have a lifted strut that would work. Thanks for the reply

Thinner sidewalls?

@@DrivenCompanion Would you think that mine stock 2018 with 5100's would ride stiffer/sportier than a 2018/20 Limited with the XREAS??

What kind of vehicle are you working on is it sr5
Yes, 4Runner SR5
Gas charged vs hydraulic shocks. Comparing apples and oranges there.
They each have their own pros and cons.
Are those Bilstein 5100 available for the 2004 Toyota Rav4?
No they aren't, but Bilstein has other series available which are more appropriate
so wait, you buy suv to make it ride like a sporty car? i am confused. i was actually considering those for my f150, but after this review, no way. i want my comfort
What is your discount code from bilstien?
Should be MikeC unless the code is no longer active.
Could you post a video of a side view of the 4Runner braking from a decent speed and showing the nose dive improvement?
Too late now that they're installed but there is definitely a noticeable difference.
Bilstein 5100's are monotube construction. Typical OEM shocks are twin tube since they're cheaper. monotubes are technically superior to twin tubes.
New to this, but wouldn't stiffer drive be more tiring to drive daily?
My question exactly
I have Bilsteins on my TRD Tacoma , hes not explaining it clearly to people who don't have them. They travel very well , but not when they don't need to travel....Comprende? Like that floaty , feeling less sure footed on all terrain. The memory is faster for stability , but at the same time , smooth as Jessica Alba's lips. If you don't know who that is, Look it up.
@@lane4574 Floaty is more tiring to me!!!! Just replaced the OEM with 5100s on my 2018 and feels less floaty and more connected to the road.
Lane -yes but are they as perfect as her ass??? Lol
people misconstrue what stiffer/firmer means in the context of vehicle suspension. We like the term sportier, which means tighter handling and bump compliance/recovery. So instead of the vehicle wobbling for 2 or 3 wave-motions after a speed bump, it will only be 1 or 2 motions.
Hey Mike, I'm planning to get the 5100s just for the front and leave the rear of my 4runner stock. Would the ride feel different ?
yes, especially if the rears aren't bilstein. Bilstein is a digressive shock, so tighter handling, and if the rear doesn't match that kind of valving, then you'll have oversteer behaviors
Coupon code doesn't appear to be working.
just tried and its working for me. Give it another go!
@@DrivenCompanion Maybe it only works for the 4runner. I was trying to purchase a set for a tacoma.
Didn’t work for me either
Very informative, thank you.
I honestly noticed no change in ride going from the 2nd clip to the 3rd.
Definitely won't be putting them on my Tacoma. It's to stiff with the stock shocks. I want something that will soften the ride!
6112 on second notch from top is amazing
@@Cosmicsurfpro I'm debating on the 5100s maxed out with a shim possibly or the 6112s to get a 3 inch lift. Do you know how the difference in ride quality is?
I'm throwing these on my 2011 f150
Thanks. Do you think this will fit Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series model 1998. Please advise
Go to Bilsteinslifts.com and search your vehicle to see a list of compatible suspension options.
Did it fix the lean on driver side?
I've never noticed the driver side lean but I've heard others complain about it.
