  • In this video, we discuss why someone comes back after you give them space and distance. We get into understanding the importance of space in a relationship and how to have balance between time together and time apart. If you're in a breakup, respecting your ex's need for space and using it to strengthen your identity in turn shows confidence and can re-attract them.

I was with a SUPER avoidant girl (I was REALLY anxious back then) and after she dumped me I pleaded and messed up bad. There was 0% chance anything would ever happen between us again... 4 months later things looked a lot different.
Do this! It works! Don't do it for them, do it for yourself. If it works out, awesome! if not, you'll be with someone better.

It’s so hard when an avoidant sometimes doesn’t express their need for space. I tried to pick up when she needed space, but then sometimes I truthfully didn’t realize that I was being needy and invading her space. Unintentionally. I’m learning to control my anxiety. So when I get a second chance, I will be better & more knowledgeable.

I've been through so many relationships that would have been just beautiful, had I known what I just learned from watching this video. I wasn't to blame for how toxic and dysfunctional my relationships were, because I couldn't even see it myself and no one ever told me, but this information is a game changer for me, if I ever do have another relationship in the future. My son went to the Marines so used that as an excuse to learn about myself. II had a great career opportunity and just needed a change of scenery. I have learned I am an combination of anxious and avoidant (fearful avoidant or disorganized) I am not an adopted child, but just had those issues. I am am trying to be a secure person. My parents are really dysfunctional but at the end of the day I have learned about myself and I have learned it from you. I have been single for 3 years to learn and love myself. Thank you!

Exactly- to your point about "not knowing " It sickens me to no end that these skills aren't taught somewhere in the late teens, early twenties so that people have a grasp on how to successfully navigate a relationship or marriage and don't fall flat on their face 3 years jn because they have no idea how to be in a relationship. This curriculum should be mandatory to all young people- that divorce rate wouldn't be above 50% It's a shame, and I'm embarrassed at us as a society that learning about attachment styles aren't mandatory in our school systems

When someone asks for “personal time/space” and you respect that… But they’re out contacting and responding to everyone else but you…. That is where ppl confuse the purpose…At that point, be an adult and tell your partner…”while I’m out, I don’t want to talk to you…” Be honest… It is not about being insecure… It’s about allowing the person to handle your true reasons.

Ive distanced myself for 8 months, not a peep. Never reached out after our last contact but she still stalks my social media through her friend. Its painful for me in a way cause my thought process is just "why are you torturing and hurting yourself when I wont bite if you wanna say something to me lol". I was giving her plenty of space in a relationship and never been the jealous type. Oh well, every day im letting go more and more and I'm perfectly fine.

What if this is the 2nd time? The first time he was overwhelmed with work. Did not beg, plead, anything. NC for 3 weeks. He reached out and then asked me out. Went on a number of dates and then he asked me if I’d like to continue dating again. We both had family engagements and travel commitments for 3 weeks. He was in touch the whole time. I always let him initiate. Then, I return from my trip and out of the blue he tells me he can’t do this anymore and his heart isn’t in it. I said, “okay. Goodbye.” Back to NC. I haven’t been clingy and have been extremely patient recognizing when he needed space. He told me he missed me the 1st time. What in the world?! I did nothing. No anxious qualities at all! No guilt tripping no dependency at all. I’m pretty secure. Both divorced. I was anxious in my marriage but have been in therapy for 3 yrs. His ex wife walked out on him after a 7 yr relationship and a 1.5 year marriage.

So much of the advice is directed toward anxious partners. I am stable, not anxious; i am not pressuring my partner for more time together, and have some avoidant tendencies myself.
I have ended the relationship with the avoidant after two 2 wk periods of reduced contact. I then stopped reaching out, waited 30 days, and received not even a text. To me, it’s too exhausting and unfulfilling to love someone who doesn’t want to be loved.
What I want as advice is more about the things to say to console myself, and why it’s not a good idea to have this kind of relationship, and to not fall for the love bombing, to recognize them before I get in too deep. And also to recognize the stable people who are interested.

I felt failed, unwanted i was kinna obsessed with him but i stopped contact with him.
He moved on,saw it on his social media (i was comparing my self to her,i felt such a looser",why her and not me,is she more beautiful is she more clever?"etc,

I knew i had to move on just few weeks ago.

While he is with another woman.I felt shick and shaken.
I just politely refused and i think he got the message.

How much space is too much space? I wanted To see my ex at least once a week or at least have communication once a week and that became too difficult (always, I’ve been busy). At least two weeks or even a month would go by and they would say “it hasn’t been that long🙄” and I would respond “yes, it’s been a month.” And they would say, “well it doesn’t seem that long to me.” This would upset me and hurt me, making me feel, wow my partner doesn’t even care that I haven’t been around for two weeks to a month. I don’t think I’m an unreasonable person. But, I think I was feeling more like an obligation than being wanted, and it hurts so much to feel this way. I want to be wanted, and not out sight out of mind. Finding a balance And understanding became a struggle, and my anxiety and disappointment grew so much that my partner decided it was too much. I could have been more mature, but at this point I was in too much pain. I wish people were more understanding and patient (myself included at times).

We broke up almost 2 months ago and i’m doing better but it still hurts seeing her like that. Although lately, she has posted some sad love quotes with sad music in her close friends insta story and i don’t know why i’m still on that list and she even added my sister and my close friends to that list as if she wanted me to see it, i didn’t though, my sister showed it to me, so my ex doesn’t know if i saw it. Yeah, letting them go play basketball is one thing. So is bowling. My ex wanted to be gone the ENTIRE year taking road trips with groups of guys and girls, going to Vegas, partying until the morning, etc. It was the same when she was married I found out. She wanted to have a man and kids here, while she went out and partied and had someone to handle things back home. She told me the same thing she told her husband when they were married: I'm working....she let it slip once in conversation that he would call her and nag her about coming home and she'd say she's working.
She said the same to me one night when I asked her why she was out for hours at a time at dinner all the time with her friends. She'd say, "I'm working...." I told her she was full of crap. I wouldn't have had any issues with an outing locally here and there, in fact she did that when she was here and I had no issues. Once she was out of state it was like she didn't have kids or a man....

I'm on a "break" the last 2 months. So she's been staying at a different house here in the same town, even though she's not from anywhere around here. But I've not gone more than 2 days without hearing from her plus she has me see her sometimes. She makes it evident that she needs to heal but has intentions of working things out. So it's a bit different than a full blown break-up. But she def can't let me go and def wouldn't wanna see another woman loving me. I was emotionally abusive at times but we had many more great times the last 2+ years than bad moments. And we got engaged just 5 months ago which was only 3 months into engagement when she started checking out emotionally and this break started. But I feel giving her space and letting her reach out to me has helped her accelerate through her stages. She has been realistic with herself that it's not permanent for her to feel this way. For example the other day she asked me to get lunch at Dennys with her. There was an old couple sitting by us and she said, "right now that doesn't even appeal to me, but I know it's just a stage and I'll end up back to wanting to settle down again" but right now she just needs to feel some freedom to heal. And besides my emotional abuse I had been controlling in some ways so I understand everything she is going through. I'm just glad she is mature and realistic with herself that this isn't permanent for her to feel this way. So I will keep growing and allow her to come to me. Any advice would be appreciated but I feel I'm on the right path.

I’m willing to work on it and he was at one point but it’s so deep rooted in him he gets overwhelmed and acts spontaneously and then regrets leaving later..

I thought I was an amazing partner. I never questioned him when he went out- who he was with, where he was going, what time he be back, NOTHING! I trusted him completely. Guess I learned my lesson... He completely blindsided and bu with me after 1.5 years and marriage, house, and kids talks- he was in a relationship 2.5 weeks later ( or that's when I found out anyhow)
I've given him nothing but space and time and haven't reached out for 6 months and they're still together. Guess this isn't true in my case. It should be called they're NEVER coming back in my case. 💔

A therapist once told me "When you give a man too much space, that's when they cheat." Going to a ballgame once in awhile is fine though.

Was this way with my girl with 100% trust, she went on an annual trip she always goes on with "some friends" and cheated with a guy she just met. Lovely.

@@michaelwilson7204 I am so sorry to hear that. Knowing that the person you love most in the world chooses someone else over you is the most devastating thing. It's been almost 2 years for me now and I haven't heard anything from him. but I did hear through the grapevine that he and the woman he left me for had a child together.. Nothing more devastating than that. I just wish I knew what she had and what she was able to give him that I wasn't. I guess I'll never know.
I hope things work out for you man.. Again I am so so very sorry and I completely understand your hurt.

i own up to my mistakes and i did this. she never did anything for me not to trust her when she would go out but i was always insecure. i should have just let her go and have fun and not have to worry about me because i’m sure this was the reason why we broke up. it’s been 9 days of NC and i’m starting to feel a little bit better

It would be interesting if you could talk about when the dumper tells themselves "its better like this so i dont hurt them like ive been hurt, they deserve someone beter, im not meant to be with anyone, i dont eant to bring them down with me" this is how my ex ended things and i wish i could understand more about why they feel this way and if theres a chance they ever change their mind and reach out even though they believe that the breakup was better for the dumpee.

i didnt let him do anything because of previous experiences with them not being trustworthy. i regret it now. he broke up with me for that reason which he doesn’t blame me for but to also advance in his career.
