Something I never noticed before. Before Truman and Sylvia go on their "date" she tells him in the library, "if we don't go now, it won't happen. So, what do YOU want to do?" Even under the circumstances, she still gives Truman a choice. She doesn't try to force him to go. She just tells him the facts of the situation, but then lets him decide what he wants to do. In contrast to Truman's entire world, where all of his choices have unknowingly been controlled for him by other people his whole life.

The other part of it is that you can also cross your fingers for good luck. You cross your fingers behind your back, or out of view, when you're lying because you don't want whoever your lying to, to know, but if you cross your fingers while holding your hand or hands out in front of you in plain view, it's to hope for good luck.

@@nsasupporter7557 Yeah between the two I would probably pick Williams first as, very similarly to Carrey, he's great at both wacky comedy and serious drama and I think would have fallen into place really well in this kind of film just like Carrey did. I actually think Robin Williams probably would have given a very similar kind of performance to Carrey. Oldman probably would have turned in something a little different, but equally good as like you said he's an incredible actor and he also does an especially good job of being able to disappear into a role which I think would have served him well in this type of film about what is supposed to be an ordinary guy living an ordinary life.

The "Matrix" syndrom where you are The One, at the center of an artificial universe created for you. A pawn, an alien.
I guess it is a natural process so our ego can finally become the center of the world and bathe in its self-importance, while also justifying our inability to change anything since our whole existence was engineered by "everyone" to become a prison of status quo.
      A twofold ego trip:
      1) To make you think you're special.

I think the people (most anyway) were invested in the show, but they were satisfied with the great ending to the series basically. I think it was more than just that Truman was an explorer and had to know for himself, but that it was a matter of freedom. Freedom to take control of his own life. Which can also be scary, but that's why he chose to go through the door at the end. Not so much to see for himself but to be free.

The original movie 1984, based on George Orwell’s Novel from way back, touches on a very dystopian version of this type of thing. It’s where the term “Big Brother” comes from. Pleasantville would also be a great watch. Anything that touches on The Stepford Wives would truly rock you as well. Good for October. Spooky. Not horror, but disturbing. Remember when reality tv shows like Big Brother, etc., were big? I guess this film is a response to that and perhaps a warning of how far things might go with modern entertainment, considering how heartless the mainstream media has become, maybe, also I guess the ending bit represents what these film & tv producers think those who watch tv shows are really like, perhaps that's true for your average casual viewer be there are of course those who do get very invested in shows, which is quite relatable considering I'm a lifetime fan of a certain long-running and iconic British sci-fi tv series (I highly recommend the classic series of this, I'm sure if you love sci-fi you'd love it)... There's a real life thing that happened in Japan... a group of people were told they were applying for a reality show where only 1 would be chose and have a life changing opportunity. They selected a man and blindfolded him, put him in a box and delivered him to an apartment. He got out of the box and was told to strip to his underwear. They gave him 100s of magazines and told him he was going to be on live tv 24/7 never leaving this room. The only food, clothes, utensils, cooking utensils, etc. he would have is things he won through the magazines by filling out the things to win the items. He was forced to do this over a year.
After he got out, they did it to him again for 6 or 8 months...only to have the walls of the new room to fall down around him in the end to realize he was in a studio set in the boxed room the entire time. The Truman show is a very unique film in terms of its plot, but there are many other films that tackle similar themes. Donnie Darko, American Beauty, and Blue Velvet are satires of American Suburban lifestyle. There's also thematic overlap with The Matrix and Fight Club, with the characters dealing with the monotony of the white color, sedentary lifestyle that really kicked into high gear after the .com boom of the late 80s/early 90s. All of these are somewhat rooted in the zeitgeist, but these films still resonate with modern viewers.

At the end the people were invested and happy because they loved Truman, but it's parasocial (one-sided) love. Like if somebody falls in love with a youtuber or streamer. Or even just the people who think "Oh Trixie is my friend because I know her so well." The emotions are real, but it's hollow and, for most sane people, easily dismissed. If my favorite streamer or youtuber disappears tomorrow, I'd be sad and miss them, but I'd quickly find some form of entertainment to replace them, because as much as I might "love" them, it's not REAL. And that's what the people at the end were doing. They were happy for Truman, but once he's gone, they'll never see him again, so they look for the next parasocial "fix."

Crossing your fingers has 2 meanings.
One is that you cross your fingers when you make a promise you don't intend to keep, or say something you don't mean (it's supposed to be an implicit way of telling the truth while explicitly lying, almost like trying to absolve yourself from blame).
The second meaning is to cross your fingers for good luck.
So Meryl crossing her fingers indicated her marriage to Truman was a lie. Truman saying "I'll cross my fingers for you" was a way to communicate that he knew she crossed her fingers, but to also communicate it in such a way that made it sound like he was wishing her good luck.
