      I almost skipped this reaction as I didn't much enjoy the show, but I thought it pretty likely Nick would enjoy, and I was curious how much he knew. I'm glad I did! The way he went in is exactly how I WISHED I'd gone in, but it was spoiled before I ever saw it, which I think is a big reason I just couldn't enjoy it. I was, thankfully, given a second chance with this because it really was fantastic seeing it revealed to a viewer at the same time it was revealed to Nick.

    Yeah, the fact that they intentionally killed off his "dad" to give him ptsd and a fear of water in order to keep him there just... absolutely disgusting. I get that it was an actor, not his actual dad, but as far as Truman knew, that was his father, completely. Intentionally putting someone through that pain is just.... it's so horrific

    • @morley364
      @morley364 2 роки тому +38

      And honestly for all intents and purposes, that WAS his real dad. It was the person that raised him, who he called Dad, just like any other kid raised by a non-bio parent. Only this parent agreed to abandon and traumatize him when his boss told him to. The absolute horror of realizing your parent did that INTENTIONALLY and sat and watched you grieve through a TV screen is insane.

    • @IulianYT
      @IulianYT 2 роки тому +7

      But from the point of view of screenwriters - it is awesome. After his "dad" returned to his life, Truman kind of realized that his long lasting fear of water is unmotivated, so he could sail freely.

      @@IulianYT I don't think the idea of being lost, nearly killed, with amnesia so you miss out on 20+ years of your life, would make the sea less frightening. Truman took to the sea in spite of his fears because he was more afraid of being trapped. He would have ended up do it that way whether his dad returned or not, in my opinion. His dad returning was just one of the many clues to his situation that helped him figure out what was going on.

      If we're talking about faves, I've moved into more thought provoking ones (such as Nolan movies). So, if you say that's a masterpiece, then my taste is god-like. It so happens to be your favorite, so you're biased. Just because it's you're fave movie and someone says it's so-so, you don't get to tell them they have poor taste. My class actually made a school play out of this. It was amazing! We had half a car on stage, several cameras filming and broadcasting live on a giant screen at the back of the stage. We promoted local companies and had a lot of fun little product placement, some real some we made up. And the storm and the rain at the end was wild! I would love to perform it again and again.

    There are only a few movies in the world that deserve the word "masterpiece"... But this is certainly one of them... Jim Carrey is stellar, the supporting cast is stellar, everything just fits... So, so much of the underlying critique is still relevant today, not many movies achieved this... If anyone asks me for a great movie, this is one of the first ones I would recommend.
    Thank you for your reaction, thoroughly enjoyed it!

    Other people have said it's a masterpiece and I agree. Easily one of my top ten movies of all time. Everything about it gets full marks: the idea, the execution, the design, the writing, the acting, the editing. Just an extraordinary piece of cinema.

    Your reactions are so pure, bless you. I had no clue what it was about when I first watched it and someone told me it was based on a true story and I was so gullible back then, I believed them (I figured it out a little later). It's fantastically done as you warm to Truman, laugh with him and when you realise it's a tv show and he doesn't know, you really start to feel bad for him and then as he figures it out, you just want him to succeed in leaving. I hope he reunited with Sylvia. Jim Carrey was an underrated actor at the time, honestly.

    This movie was directed by Peter Weir, a truly great director. It contains what I call the "Weir moment", which happens in all his films: the lead character experiences a very strong, pivotal emotion which the audience _is not allowed to see._ In this film, it's when Truman realizes the sky is not the sky, and he freaks out and starts crying and beating the wall, but he does it with his back to the camera so we don't get to see that first moment of realization. Of all the signature techniques by directors, this is my favorite, because it gives the character authenticity by giving him _privacy,_ the intimation of a real person with aspects no one else can witness.

    When this came out people didn't know it was a tv show either. In some ways it was more alarming as reality shows didn't really exist as a tv genre in 1998. The whole concept of filming regular people in their day to day lives emerged later. The only shows that existed were scripted shows with actors: sitcoms, dramas, etc.

      Did you forget about "The Real World"? That was on MTV in 1994 or 93 if my memory serves. I remember not because I particularly hated the show (though I watched very few episodes of it) but because that was the time that MTV started to really change its programming until it became a bad joke to call it a 'music ' channel. Also, I'm reasonably sure I remember hearing about some other proto reality show in the 50's or 60's (like many things the idea is not a brand new idea but goes back) but I can't remember the name.

    So glad you liked this film! I haven't seen it in ages and ages, but I remember being blown away as everything got revealed bit by bit. It was like we were learning what was truly going on at the same time that Truman learned. Which to me is part of the brilliance of this film.
    And at the face of it, it seems like this innocuous, funny story, but when you get to the heart of it, it's so sad and warped! Because he didn't ever have CHOICE. Because he didn't know. And anytime he wanted to branch out in life, they cut that down and manipulated him into staying in the bubble... which means he really never had his own agency and choice at all. The life they built for him wasn't his. It was manufactured. And I could absolutely see someone wanting to try an experiment like this. It says so much about the entertainment industry and the media and advertising as well as us as viewers and consumers of "entertainment."
    The film is just so brilliant. And to me, it's Jim Carrey's best work. Before this, he'd always been the comedic actor, just pure weird insane comedy. To see him in a role like this, with the depth that it has, really blew me away when I first saw it. I love this film.

    When I first saw this movie in the '90s, like you I was mostly in the dark about what it was about, and it actually took me a second viewing to fully appreciate its brilliance; it's a rare example a film that benefits a little from spoilers. It also needs to be realized that at the time this movie came out (1998), reality TV was in its infancy, and this was one of the first movies--maybe THE first movie--to explore and satirize the genre. There was another movie that came out a short time later, EdTV, which had a similar premise but was a lot more mundane and straightforward in its approach.
    Before this film, Jim Carrey had just done a string of comedies, and the previous one was "Liar Liar," which I still consider his highest achievement in comedy. So I really wasn't prepared for "The Truman Show," because it was so different from any of his previous work. It wasn't that funny, but it wasn't really trying to be; it was a different kind of movie. Yet it greatly utilized Carrey's comedic abilities; I can't imagine a "serious" dramatic actor having played Truman quite the way Carrey does.
