"on air conception" So, to me that means they intended to continue this on for generations. Truman's kids would be their next "stars" of the Truman show. No telling when it would ever end.
There's a deleted scene where Christof talks to the main cast, and his plan to have two channels, one for Truman and the other for his child. Great scene, but better that it was cut.

Definitely do rewatches of this. There are SO many little things. For example, when he's talking to his friend stocking the machine, you can see him pull stuff out, then restock it, so that they can keep the shot going. Or how it's implied that he used to have a brother that the show got rid of. And the twins are pushing him, so that they have a good shot of him up against the advertisement.
A detail I only understood recently: the woman in the travel agency removes the thing under her chin. I think it was because they didn't expect him to go there, so they had to rush to get her ready and do her makeup.
A lot of little details hidden in the movie: like the quote on the sign at the front of town in Latin reads "One for all, and All for One" in this case meaning Truman. There's also a shot where Truman has Vitamin D near him, they had him take Vitamin D because he wasn't getting it from a real Sun, he'd never truly been around real sunshine.
The Truman Show is the Pleasantville version of The Matrix. It actually reminds me a lot of how often parents fall into the trap of protecting and insulating their children from the problems and ugliness of the world, that they can actually harm them by isolating them entirely from the actual world. It reminds me of the story of Siddartha Gautama and how his father raised him to never be exposed to the existence of pain, suffering, and death. And I see a number of overlaps and parallels (in that regard) with that story.. or even say Finding Nemo. I always find Christof’s assertion, that “There’s no more truth out there (in the real world) than there is in here,” fascinating because although it’s obviously false, it’s far less obvious why it’s false. Everything that exists in Seahaven Island is either a copy or inspired by something that exists in the real world. And yet, it’s all false, in no small part at least, because the intentions and motivations behind everything that happens on the Show aren’t genuine, eg Meryl’s “marriage” to Truman being an acting job to her (hence her crossed fingers in everything) rather than something she herself believes or wants. It’s a fascinating exploration of what makes something real or not.
you know I find it funny that will how people got during trump that Pleasantville didn't explode in popularity. I guess it was for the best I recently rewatched it and its still good.
14:12 finally a reactor that understood the driver purposely stalled the bus. Seems like everyone thinks he didn't know how to actually drive the bus but they clearly drive the bus around the town to give the impression of it being legitimate. He stalled it because Truman got on and as you mention, had to make it to where he couldn't leave.
I love the part when Truman's fighting his wife and they send the best friend in to help her, and he walks in beer first 😂 always room for advertising even when someone might die 😂 🤦.
I always thought that was just a framing device so that we wouldn't know who it was, but that makes so much sense in-world that it was an opportunity for an advertisement. Good catch!
Not only is it strange that so many actors just went along with it, it's also strange that the police, government, or even child protective services didn't stop it.
Absolutely fantastic reaction! the shock, the outrage, the surprise. When this movie originally came out the trailers showed waaaay too much. It was so much fun to watch you, with no clue what was to come, see this. Thank you so much. Good choice
Not only that but I remember them advertising it as more of a comedy it came out at the height of Jim Carrey's comedy career. And its not a comedy. Its a drama (though it can be funny) as this was one of the first times Jim Carrey wanted to expand his acting. He's great in this.
It seems the younger people lost the meaning of the crossed fingers scene, I noticed other young reactors also having a problem not understanding that scene. I also makes me realise how old I'm getting.
This is true! When I was editing, I had to look it up because I wasn’t sure; I kinda understand the whole crossing fingers thing but in the context of a wedding photo, I had no idea! Guess it’s just one of those things 🤪
im 21 and we still did it in school but its something we did at a young young age like 11 year old sort of or younger i think it very very recently phasing out or just dont tghink of it anyumore because its somthing we did as little kids so it not somthing that first comes to mind
Nah. I just didn't notice her fingers crossed. I thought it had something to do with the ring. I thought maybe it was the wrong ring(married in real life) or he hadn't put a ring on her yet.
The truly crazy thing is that even outside of the set, in the real world, everybody Truman meets knows who he is and has watched his entire life happen. Which means he will never meet a true stranger.
@@Zero11s Really? That's like saying Ace Ventura isn't a Jim Carrey movie, or The Mask isn't a Jim Carrey movie. Either you've not google searched it or just never heard of it before and assuming that it isn't a Jim Carrey movie. Look it up! SMH
23:26 The thing that always gets me about this movie is that it is a nearly perfect critique of the voyeurism and false reality of "reality television," but it was released before reality television actually existed.
People around the world watching part of another persons life and their reactions to things... This movie was ahead of its time and predicted the fascination we have to watch other people. Thanks for letting me watch The OGBojangles show.
The scene with his best friend at the pier is so heartbreaking. He's been best friends with Truman since he was seven, so, really, this is almost as much of his life as it is Truman's. He was a child actor, so he likely didn't have any choice in the matter, he was just recruited into this lifelong role even though he knows it's a sham. So he's not lying to Truman when he appeals to their friendship; Truman really IS his best friend, and having to live a life of constant deception, since it's all he's ever been allowed to know, is crushing his soul. I don't think his tears were insincere.
29:24 I love his bow at the end. It would have been cool if they showed him finding Sylvia, but that might have taken away from the purposely abrupt ending. If you liked this, you should watch Pleasantville.
I've seen it said that the reason we don't see what happens to Truman after he leaves is that he's no longer on television so we can't see his life anymore.
That's right. Truman is in the real world now and there aren't any more cameras following him around. We don't get to see him once he stepped through the door.
For other trippy movies watch: Being John Malkovich (1999), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Pleasantville (1998), The Cell, (2000), The Fall (2006), Moon (2009), Twelve Monkeys (1995), Memento (2000)
i'm always so happy to see first time reactions to this, because it doesn't happen often. this movie was SO ahead of its time, so incredibly well-acted by all involved, so emotional. it made me see jim carrey as a real actor, not just the goofy ace ventura dude. the moment when the ship bangs into the wall of the set and you see truman sobbing and hitting the wall and realizing, truly realizing that he's in a fucking prison, and there's no sound but the swell of that beautiful background music... god, the first time i saw that i was just bawling. so amazing. thanks for this one :) oh, and in case no one pointed it out yet: the meryl and marlon characters were given those names in tribute to meryl streep and marlon brando, two of the most talented actors of all time.
I notice something new every single time I see this movie. When Truman's "best friend" says he was out of school for about a month for being sick, it's probably because the actor was out to get training for the remainder of his role. Or something. Clearly, he couldn't have really been sick. And I'm pretty sure a lot of the extras make repeat appearances but in different "roles" in the background. Not a continuity error, but just how everyone in the city is just an actor probably working in shifts.
I like watching movie reactions in general, but I really love it when a movie like this gets people into some serious thought and discussion. And speaking of "serious" did you notice what was written on the spotlight that fell from the sky? It said "Sirius" which is the real name of one of the brightest stars you can see from Earth. So basically that spotlight served as the star Sirius in Truman's world.
In the scene where he's nearly hit by the bus and he holds his hands out and the car stops, it took me some time to figure out how this could be the trigger it seems to be. After all, of course the bus and car stopped. What else were they supposed to do? Hit him? But it comes down to principal actors versus extras. Some people have speaking parts and some people don't. In a real-world version of that scenario, either the bus driver or the driver in the car would say (yell) or do something in response to almost hitting a pedestrian. Nobody would just sit silently. But these actors can't do that because they're not authorized to speak on camera. It's above their pay grade. What makes the scene significant isn't that they stopped. What's significant is that it's the only thing they did.
definitely one of the best movies I’ve ever watched! And one of the best things about this movie is that it’s unique! You cannot make a movie like this ever again! I mean yeah shows like Wanda Vision managed to capture the vibe but this movie with the exact concept they created cannot be re- created! And I love it! In my opinion Carrey deserved an oscar for his performance. Another awesome movie with him is I love you Phillip Morris (where again he should’ve gotten an oscar for) totally underrated movie!!
other movies kind of like this, Ed TV and Pleasantville This came out just before youtube, in a time when people with web cams were putting there own lives online and this felt like a direction we could head in.
Great reaction OG, I actually think Sylvia was always against The Truman Show from the start, I think she was one of the protestors of it and was able to, if you like, go undercover to try to sabotage it.
This is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. He always plays this over the top stupid guys which type cast him so when I saw this movie I fell in love with it. I prefer to see him do more serious characters because he is a great actor & deserves better roles than silly characters. Glad you liked it. Another weird Jim Carrey movie I like is “Number 23”.
Sorry, I’ve never seen him play “silly characters.” He’s always shown his amazingly incredible talent that no one else has in all of his roles. That’s one reason he’s 1 of the biggest stars of all time.
This is an excellent variation on the dystopian tv show idea that uses a "reality" show format. Another great movie that is more of a game show take on dystopian TV is The Running Man. Very different but many common themes.
They keep pushing Truman against the van because he's in the way of their logo. As Truman is moved aside, the camera doesn't move with him, it holds on their logo on the side of the van :)
Directed by an Aussie - Peter Weir Years ago Harrison Ford was determined to show he was an actor not just a character from Star Wars, or Indiana Jones so he got Peter Weir to direct him in "Witness" Robin Williams also wanted to be seen as an actor, not just a comedian so he got Peter Weir to direct him in "Dead Poet's Society" And... Jim wanted also to test his acting skills and got Peter Weir to direct him in this film
it was funny how you say "good morning, good evening, good afternoon" ( similar to what the main character say) when you are about to see the movie, i thought that was a reference until you said you didnt know anything about it. , lol. really nice movie and reaction.
I don’t even know how I started saying that but I started to roll with it a few videos into this shindig and here we are now 😅 But yes! I had no idea this guy said something even vaguely similar! Glad you enjoyed the reaction
WandaVision was really inspired by The Truman Show. Other movies like The Truman Show (that also inspired WandaVision) are Pleasantville, Stranger Than Fiction, EDTv, ...
There was a small independent film made in the 60's called "The Secret Cinema" directed by Paul Bartel (I happened to see it in a film class in college) that may have been an inspiration as well. It was about a woman who's life is secretly being filmed by her "friends" who set up weird situations and then "episodes" of her life are edited and shown at a local cinema every week.
… oh god SEE YKNOW I wondered about that a little as I was watching. Like what if he just- committed a crime?? Honestly, considering how the movie is? I feel as though they would like, find some way around it instead or something lmao
Im not sure if anyone has answered this for you... but the reason they push him up against the wall is because of ‘ product placement ‘ there is advertising behind him in every shot they do that.
The Truman Show is suddenly popular this week, this is the 4th reactor I watch. I worked at the movie theater when this was out, we had to wear big pins that said “Free Truman”, not realizing till I saw the movie that it was a big spoiler🙄

@@OGBReacts i have seen this movie an embarrassing amount of times and I see new things each time. Its crazy how much details went into this. Great reaction as always.
Considering this movie is from 1998 it is quite on point about how describes todays society in some ways, with all the social media like instagram, youtube, tiktok and all the fake lifes people is living online and not in the real world. The movie predicted very well whats is went to happen and i wouldnt be surprised if in the future we have something similar to Truman´s Show. Good reaction as usual. Sorry if my english is not very accurate. Oh if you liked this movie i recommend you "The Game", with Michael Douglas. I think you are gonna like it if you havent watched it already.
In 2008 Popular Mechanics named this movie one of the top ten prophetic science fiction movies of all time. It was released in 1998, just before the big explosion in popularity of so-called "reality" television. The American version of Survivor premiered in 2000 and Big Brother, a couple years later.
This movie was incredibly prescient about present-day American life. We are all Truman today. The corporate news media and big tech are Christof, carefully manipulating what the public is allowed to see or read and proclaiming themselves as the arbiters of truth. As viewers of the film we easily identify the villain, but like Truman, while being manipulated we fail to fully comprehend the level of control being exercised over us. Now stepping down from my soapbox. The "island" in the movie wasn't a set. This was filmed on location in a small beach community in the Florida panhandle called Seaside, FL. I've been there many times.
Peter Weir is a great director. Always some deeper statement and beautifully shot. Even 23 years ago, this film was warning us of the blurring line between reality and entertainment. Gotta recommend a couple more of his works. Dead Poets Society (1989) Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard Witness (1985) Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lucas Haas
Omg. I've been aware of the movie since it was released, but never had an interest in watching it. I was aware of the premise that his life was a TV show, but that's about it. Thank you, Miss Bojangles for watching it. Very interesting.
Worth remembering when this came out... i.e. before the madness of reality TV really took off and well before social media. Big Brother didn't start until 2000!... It's quite prescient really.
Loved your reaction to one of my favourite movies. It came out as a precursor to Reality TV. I think the idea of Big Brother came about soon after this movie. The movie Network (1976) was also a head of its time and thought of as outlandish. (Not so much these days now.) Recommend you check it out sometime.
Thats weird. I had a super strange and vivid dream last night that it was like 300 years in the future and we had a gigantic satellite dish that you could see behind mountains on the horizon, and it creeped me out, and the shot of the fake-city dome in this movie that was shown looked just like it.
Did you happen to notice in the travel agency, when the lady came in, she still had her make up bib on and she quickly took it off? Cuz Truman did something spontaneous and they had to quickly accommodate for it.
This was the first semi-serious movie that Jim Carrey did...and he totally killed it. It showed how he was more than just a goofy comedian. This still remains one of my favourite movies.
Another film from around this same time that never gets any play.. "Blast from the Past" with Brendan Fraser.. he was so big in the 90s then just sadly dropped off the radar.. Seems like he's finally getting a resurgence.
What had alot to do with how/why that happened was because he just started doing stinker movies 1 after another to the point where his career just ran into the ditch really fast
Hi Sam :) Saw this in the theater when u first came out. What I liked was that even though he was "controlled", nobody actually threatened his life, and he earned his own life in the end.
One of the craziest TV shows ever was on the air when this movie came; Nasubi Denpa Shōnen. He wasn't aware he was livestreamed as he lived cut off from the world for over a year, performing tasks he thought was recorded for a future show. Just check out "Nasubi" on Wikipedia. There are a few hours on UA-cam from this show in low quality, but worth a look.
I think my favorite little bit of trivia or fun fact is when his best friend is restocking the machines (that’s apparently his job) there’s a moment when Truman looks away and his bestie is trying to slyly take out as much candy from the machine as possible to continue restocking since he doesn’t have enough. Also there’s a deleted scene where Christopher was talking about making a spinoff of Truman‘s kid and implying that it would be like the beginning of a franchise where every channel had a family member… creep x 10000
I think those twins are pushing him against the billboard advertisement to make sure it's in view of the camera. He's being forced to do a commercial without knowing it.
I really enjoyed seeing your reaction. Btw, you've definitely got the hang of commentating while watching the movies. You're doing great, keep it up. You should check out Jim Carey in "Man On The Moon".
No it wasn’t… usually when movies are “ahead of their time,” they don’t get alot of praise… this movie got ALOT of praise when it came out. I understand that the “idea” of it was probably ahead of it’s time, but not the movie itself

He stalled it because Truman got on and as you mention, had to make it to where he couldn't leave.
I love the part when Truman's fighting his wife and they send the best friend in to help her, and he walks in beer first 😂 always room for advertising even when someone might die 😂 🤦.
EXACTLY!! These folks are whack LMAO
I always thought that was just a framing device so that we wouldn't know who it was, but that makes so much sense in-world that it was an opportunity for an advertisement. Good catch!
@@Zorak9595 thanks man. 👍
@@Zorak9595 He always has the beer, except when he was doing his "job" as a vending machine tech. 😂
Good choice
Thank you so much!!
Not only that but I remember them advertising it as more of a comedy it came out at the height of Jim Carrey's comedy career. And its not a comedy. Its a drama (though it can be funny) as this was one of the first times Jim Carrey wanted to expand his acting. He's great in this.
@@zachariousmccool5768 he really is
It seems the younger people lost the meaning of the crossed fingers scene, I noticed other young reactors also having a problem not understanding that scene.
It has zero to do with crossed fingers.......The ring was on the wrong hand!
@TheOGBojangles
@@paulcurran4786 It had everything to do with the crossed fingers. He ever taunted her with it moments later, saying he'll cross his fingers for her.
What Truman saw in the photo was Merrill's fingers crossed, as if saying "this isn't real".
The truly crazy thing is that even outside of the set, in the real world, everybody Truman meets knows who he is and has watched his entire life happen. Which means he will never meet a true stranger.
Couple other great Jim Carrey movies.... 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and 'Man on the Moon'
@@Zero11s Huh? I think you may be confused.
@@Zero11s Really? That's like saying Ace Ventura isn't a Jim Carrey movie, or The Mask isn't a Jim Carrey movie. Either you've not google searched it or just never heard of it before and assuming that it isn't a Jim Carrey movie. Look it up! SMH
Agreed and agreed.
The Cable Guy is great as well with Mathew Broderick.
I like the scene where Mary Jane Watson and Bruce Banner erase the Riddler's memories of the Huntress
23:26 The thing that always gets me about this movie is that it is a nearly perfect critique of the voyeurism and false reality of "reality television," but it was released before reality television actually existed.
It's like we as a society took the warning like a guidebook.
People around the world watching part of another persons life and their reactions to things... This movie was ahead of its time and predicted the fascination we have to watch other people. Thanks for letting me watch The OGBojangles show.
This movie is unique, that doesn't have - doesn't need - a sequel or remade!!
I don't think his tears were insincere.
probably analogues to real life… most friendships unfortunately are shams :(
29:24 I love his bow at the end.
Yes!! I wish more people would react to Eternal Sumshine! It's a masterpiece.
The Fall is one of my favorite movies and I never see it being suggested. I would love to see people reacting to it.
i'm always so happy to see first time reactions to this, because it doesn't happen often. this movie was SO ahead of its time, so incredibly well-acted by all involved, so emotional. it made me see jim carrey as a real actor, not just the goofy ace ventura dude. the moment when the ship bangs into the wall of the set and you see truman sobbing and hitting the wall and realizing, truly realizing that he's in a fucking prison, and there's no sound but the swell of that beautiful background music... god, the first time i saw that i was just bawling. so amazing. thanks for this one :)
oh, and in case no one pointed it out yet: the meryl and marlon characters were given those names in tribute to meryl streep and marlon brando, two of the most talented actors of all time.
Wow! Watching you relive this first reaction, as I did in the theater back in '98, was a real mind-fuck then and now!
Woah. That's super cool!
In your own weird way you're a form of Truman. We're all watching you discover the world of movies.
Except she actually knows she's being watched.
definitely one of the best movies I’ve ever watched!
Amen!
Great reaction OG, I actually think Sylvia was always against The Truman Show from the start, I think she was one of the protestors of it and was able to, if you like, go undercover to try to sabotage it.
The movie Stranger Than Fiction makes a great viewing paired with this.
In my opinion, the character director is the best example of a character with a god complex mind set. Along with Light from death note.
I feel like we are all on the Truman show with social media.
Directed by an Aussie - Peter Weir
Years ago Harrison Ford was determined to show he was an actor not just a character from Star Wars, or Indiana Jones so he got Peter Weir to direct him in "Witness"
Robin Williams also wanted to be seen as an actor, not just a comedian so he got Peter Weir to direct him in "Dead Poet's Society"
And...
I don’t even know how I started saying that but I started to roll with it a few videos into this shindig and here we are now 😅
But yes! I had no idea this guy said something even vaguely similar!
Glad you enjoyed the reaction
I could watch Marlon load, unload, and load again the candy machine, all day
It was really cool seeing someone go into this movie blind. The trailer and description gives away the entire concept.
There's so much subconscious social commentary in this movie and I love it
WandaVision was really inspired by The Truman Show. Other movies like The Truman Show (that also inspired WandaVision) are Pleasantville, Stranger Than Fiction, EDTv, ...
Yeah definitely not surprised WandaVision took some inspiration from this!
and in that vein, Pleasantville and Stranger Than Fiction would make for good movies to react to.
One of my all time favorite movies for its originality and creatvity....Bravo to Jim Carrey
It's a "Truman murders someone and all the actors have to pretend to be normal around him even though they're all scared" episode.
… oh god SEE YKNOW I wondered about that a little as I was watching. Like what if he just- committed a crime?? Honestly, considering how the movie is? I feel as though they would like, find some way around it instead or something lmao
@@OGBReacts lol yeah, the show takes a genre turn after that I guess.
Im not sure if anyone has answered this for you... but the reason they push him up against the wall is because of ‘ product placement ‘ there is advertising behind him in every shot they do that.
If you havent seen them you should definitely watch Liar Liar and/or Me Myself and Irene. More Jim Carey greatness :)
The Truman Show is suddenly popular this week, this is the 4th reactor I watch. I worked at the movie theater when this was out, we had to wear big pins that said “Free Truman”, not realizing till I saw the movie that it was a big spoiler🙄
I noticed this too after recording it!!

Oh. Product placement. Notice how the billboard to his left, in this shot, keeps _changing._ That's because the company listed is a sponsor for the _show._
The ending is an emotional moment when he walks away from his own show and goes to Lauren and everyone was cheering for Truman. Nobody wants to have their own life turned into a tv series behind their backs
When the twins always push Truman, notice the sign behind him is different each time. Just more advertising.
There's a LOT of advertising and subtle hints in this movie; I picked up on some that weren't included in this reaction, but there are definitely others that I haven't seen either!!
This movie is so underrated. Such a good satire.
i love those movies that take capitalize on an unique concept and execute it well
When you study Edward Bernays, and when you take an honest look at "news" and TV and movies, you realize we're all in the Truman Show.
you gotta watch DARK CITY (and make sure it's the director's cut)
They were pushing him to get the advertisement in the frame. they were positioning him so it would show on TV
Peter Weir is a great director. Always some deeper statement and beautifully shot. Even 23 years ago, this film was warning us of the blurring line between reality and entertainment.
Gotta recommend a couple more of his works.
Dead Poets Society (1989) Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard
Witness (1985) Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lucas Haas
Omg. I've been aware of the movie since it was released, but never had an interest in watching it. I was aware of the premise that his life was a TV show, but that's about it. Thank you, Miss Bojangles for watching it. Very interesting.
Thank you for watching!!
I studied this film in school. The fact that it came out maybe a year before both Survivor and Big Brother first aired is a little disturbing.
Worth remembering when this came out... i.e. before the madness of reality TV really took off and well before social media. Big Brother didn't start until 2000!... It's quite prescient really.
this was so underrated when it came out. but it finally grown a great following. its so good as a satire on well everything.
This was before reality shows and predicted where they might lead.
This was the first semi-serious movie that Jim Carrey did...and he totally killed it. It showed how he was more than just a goofy comedian. This still remains one of my favourite movies.
Truman Burbank. "True Man" (in a world of lies) "Burbank" (city known for television shows created there)
You figured it out so fast - they literally had to spell out it was a TV show before I got it
Jim Carrey plays an ordinary guy who's life is a reality TV show. There is just one problem: he doesn't know about it.
You dug every nuance of that! A lovely reaction 👏👏👏😎
At the time this movie was a shot at the dangers of the rise of Reality TV.
Hi Sam :)
Saw this in the theater when u first came out. What I liked was that even though he was "controlled", nobody actually threatened his life, and he earned his own life in the end.
Similar movie is "Pleasantville" - check it out.
Thank you so much!!
Bear in mind this was made before reality television was “a thing”. Shock Treatment played with these ideas, too, but not as gracefully.
This movie was so ahead of it's time. Now we have many Truman Shows on UA-cam and twitch just mining content.
No it wasn’t… usually when movies are “ahead of their time,” they don’t get alot of praise… this movie got ALOT of praise when it came out. I understand that the “idea” of it was probably ahead of it’s time, but not the movie itself
You have such a great reaction to these films❤️ Please react to Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, another great dramatic performance from Jim Carrey along with a stellar cast, my favourite film BY FAR! Keep it up, hope you’re well x
Thank you so much! I've been getting a lot of requests like, this week alone, for that movie!
