Yes, Groundhog Day is a real thing, but no one takes it seriously. It's one of our silliest holidays.
Bill Murray's acting in this is so good. His character goes from being a self-centered jerk, to someone who pretends to care about people, to someone who actually does care about people. The scenes where he projects insincerity are the best.

In Germany, the title of the movie translates to "And every day the groundhog greets".
This has become a fixed expression in the german language. If, for example, in the evening news the news presenter announces that politicians say they intend to lower taxes, the presenter may comment "and every day the groundhog greets". Meaning this is something that happens again and again and again, usually infering that this is never going to change anything.
Yes, that movie is that well known in Germany.

There's an often quoted number of +/- 35 years to explain how long Phil was trapped, based on how many things he is seen doing and estimates as to how long it would take. However, that number should be seen as a minimum only.
    Other numbers are much higher.
Stephen Tobolowsky (the actor who plays Ned Ryerson) asked director and screenwriter Harold Ramis, "Harold, how long is Bill trapped in time? How long is he trapped in the town? Everybody always asks me," Tobolowsky recalled. "And he said 'Stephen, 10,000 years' and I said 10,000 years? He said 'You see, I'm a practicing Buddhist.' Who knew that! 'I'm a practicing Buddhist and we believe that it takes 10,000 years to perfect the human soul. And that's the real story of Groundhog Day, the perfection of the human soul.'"
In any event, it was a long time !

  • @GetMeThere1

In the distant past, people had to use natural observations to forecast the weather. A U.S. tradition from the past was "Groundhog Day." There are similar things in some European country. The US continues with this one as sort of a charming reminder of the past -- and kind of a joke. The groundhog hibernates in winter, but they start coming out of their dens in early February. The test is, if the groundhog can "see his shadow" (i.e., if it's a sunny day on February 2) then there will be "six more weeks of winter." If he can't (because it's cloudy), then spring is coming soon.

That's a great theory and it's what I once thought too, but groundhog day isn't based on any folklore. It started as a summer barbecue (yes, roasted groundhog was featured) for a bunch of guys in Punxsutawney who like to drink together. At somepoint they moved their roast to mid winter to break the monotony and came up with the goofy tradition. That the story they tell at the Punxsutawney Historical Society.

*It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den, and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.*

As an older "fixer upper" I can tell you, Trixy, that it's probably smarter looking for someone who doesn't appear to be in too much need of fixing, because you'll inevitably find things that need fixing over time. Most of the things that need fixing will never improve, so if the list is too long it will probably end the relationship sooner or later. Not that you should go for the seemingly perfect guys (or girls) either because that's usually where the real headcases are found. Just be careful out there 😉

8:36 Wonderful reaction, particularly at this moment of your video, Blue. Groundhog Day was a holiday we learned about in elementary school, but unlike Halloween, Valentine’s Day or even St. Patrick’s Day when as a kid you get stuff (candy, cards, pinches) getting six more weeks of spring or winter wasn't a big deal for us in Texas. The movie has become a classic in part because - like _The Twilight Zone_ - everyone can relate to strangeness or the feeling we’re repeating the same moment. If someone tells you, “It must be Groundhog Day” you’ll know what they mean now. You've seen _Terminator_ and _Terminator 2_ , but if you’re on a time travel jag, I’d highly recommend _Donnie Darko_ next.

The Groundhog Day tradition comes from the Pennsylvania Dutch, and goes back to a very old German superstition that a badger could predict the weather. When Dutch settlers came to America, they brought their traditions, and simply adapted it to a new local burrowing animal.
In some parts of the United States there are local folk celebrations like the popular one in Puxatawny, Pennsylvania.
The movie itself is actually has a lot of depth and meaning beyond the great laughs. Phil is granted a unique opportunity to spend as much time as he wants to make himself a better person, but wastes a lot of time just trying tricks to get ahead. The holiday title has two meanings: 1) renewal/hope/rebooting/the coming of Springtime after a long hard winter. 2) An extremely minor inconsequential holiday, just an average mundane mediocre weekday with very little fanfare or significance compared to the major holidays--but if you make the most of each ordinary day, you can grow, learn, fall in love, help others,...
Groundhogs, by the way, supposedly know when to come out of winter hibernation by sniffing the air to predict when Spring mating season is near and the dangers of a barren foodless winter are over.

I have been to Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day 4 times. It is a lot of fun and I highly suggest you go if you ever have the opportunity.
A few things about Groundhog Day and Phil:
Phil the Groundhog lives in the center of town. He has a place called "Phil's Burrow." The entire wall is glass so passersby on the steet can look in and see him.
Phil is put onto the stump on the stage by his handlers around midnight or 1 AM on Groundhog Day. There are large celebrations starting at 1 AM and fireworks just before it turns light. Once it turns light, they bring Phil out and he makes his prediction.
Phil has a personal veterinarian, a personal dietitian, personal groomer, etc. He is the best cared for Groundhog on the planet.
There are 2 scrolls prepared in advance- 1 if Phil sees his shadow, 1 if he does not. When Phil is brought out, the head of the Groundhog club carries a special stick which allows him to speak Groundhogese. Phil tells him which scroll to use. Only the one who carries that stick can understand Phil and Groundhogese.
Unlike the film, Gobblers Knob where the stump and celebration are is on the hill outside of town. You can catch a bus up there, as there is no parking there. There are over 15,000 people attend this ceremony.

Groundhog Day is a real thing in the US. It's tradition that on February 2nd, people look for groundhogs to see if they come out of their holes to "predict" how long winter will continue or if we will have an early spring. Various towns have various groundhogs (secret, not all of them are the same groundhog because they obviously only live so long), but thanks to this movie, Punxatawney Phil is perhaps the most famous one. It's mostly a folk myth, people don't really believe that a rodent can predict the weather, but it makes a nice story.
Genuinely one of my favorite movies ever made and not just because my birthday is Groundhog Day. It's fulfilling, it shows Phil growing and becoming a better person over the course of his time trapped in his loop. It also doesn't shy away from the darkness while still being a comedy at heart, because yeah, after being trapped in the same day for months, years even, you'd look for any way to escape it. Oh and there's a tiny reference to this movie in Doctor Strange. Stephen has his car crash, according to his fancy watch, on February 2nd, and later saves the world with a time loop.

The essence of this film is that if you do the same thing every day, avoiding something new and not wanting to make changes in your life, then every day will be routine and remind the previous one. And so again and again. Only by leaving the comfort zone, striving to bring something new into one's life, and not focusing on one and the same, a person's life will be diverse, rich, unique, special and INTERESTING. And every day will be UNIQUE.

This is so cute. Trixy is trying to figure out the meaning of Groundhog Day. Some people estimated how long he was in the time loop based on the skills he developed. One of the longest estimate is about 4000 years; that is more than 365 X 4000 days + 1000 leap days; 1,461,000 days. This movie is based on a 1941 short story, Doubled and Redoubled by Malcolm Jameson, where a man was condemned to repeat the same day over and over again. There is a 1996 movie, Christmas Every Day, a story where an obnoxious 1 yo who went out of his way to make everyone around him miserable on Christmas Day. He repeated the same day over and over again until he learned the meaning of Christmas. It is a cute story. It does borrow some things from this movie, like he tries to help a homeless person (without success).

Every year many cities around the U.S. have their own ground hog and they wake him up on feb 2 to see if he sees his shadow. They make noise to wake him up and when he comes out if he doesn't see his shadow and starts eating that supposedly means his instincts are telling him to stay awake because winter is over, if he sees his shadow and goes back into his den that supposedly means his instincts are telling him to go back to sleep and sleep the rest of winter away while waiting for spring.
Sort of like a little "Winter is almost over, hang on" or a "Winter isn't dead yet, lets drink brandy and hot cocoa"pep talk/wake. The main ground hog is the one in the middle of Pennsylvania from the town of Pauxatawny named "Pauxatawny Phil" . NYC had "Statin Island Chuck" until Mayor DeBlasio dropped him on the ground and they had to put him down. I think his replacement is "Statin Island Charles"

The presence of groundhogs is considered a harbinger of Spring. If groundhogs come out and it is sunny, their shadows scare them and they go back into hibernation for another six weeks. Thus, winter weather will hang around another six weeks and Spring comes late. If February begins cloudy, the groundhogs stay out and it will be an early Spring.
Perhaps the most famous groundhog is in Punxatawny Pennsylvania who has been nicknamed Punxatawny Phil.,

Groundhog Day is a real thing and takes place on February 2nd each year. But it's more of a pseudo-holiday because no one ever gets the day off from work or school and businesses remain open. It's mostly based on old folklore regarding foretelling the seasons and weather, but no one really takes it seriously. It's basically one step above National Talk Like A Pirate Day and National Cheese Pizza Day on the calendar.
I think Trixie was confused when she heard that this movie was a "holiday movie" and assumed that it was a Christmas movie. In the U.S., there are MANY holidays throughout the year, so the word "holiday" isn't solely associated with Christmas, but it is applied to all of them, including pseudo-holidays like Groundhog Day.

  • @greenpeasuit
    @greenpeasuit Рік тому

I am sure others have explained this, but for the record:
Groundhog Day is totally a thing. It is an American tradition. As the story goes, the groundhog hibernates until February 2nd, when it emerges from its hole. If it sees its shadow, it gets scared back in to its hole and there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Otherwise, spring will come early.
In all fairness, there is almost some logic to it. When winter is in full force, there are more clear, cold sunny days (shadow). When the weather begins to change there are more rainy overcast days first (no shadow).
The IS an official Groundhog (well, at least 2 towns claim THEIRS is, and Punxsutawney Phil is the most famous).
There is debate about where the tradition started. There are certain regions of Europe with similar weather predicting rodent legends, so it likely came over from Europe and evolved to fit the local wildlife (assuming groundhogs are even native. No clue). It probably originated as Marmot Day, or Woodchuck Day.

  • @adamdanielson1872

So I'm not 100% certain on all this but my understanding was always something along the lines of the following:
The Groundhog animal instinctively raises its head out of the hole and checks for its shadow to determine if there will be 6 more weeks of Winter or not.
Then, in real life, in the city of Punxatawney, they do this actual "schtick" where they get a Groundhog that they call Phil as well and pretend like it's coming out and seeing its own shadow, although in reality, the officials performing the ceremony already know the answer so it's all for show, as a tradition of sorts there, just to announce if there will be 6 more weeks of Winter or not in that particular way since the Groundhog animal actually functions in that way naturally.
So this movie came along and sort of took all those real life elements as the backdrop for this super dope philosophical comedy!

It seems so few people truly understand the main character. He did not desire to change, and the early movie showed that to the point of committing suicide. A power stronger than him knew he had a good heart, but he had become a jerk. The actual time wasn't days, but months if not years to change who he was. I'll leave it up to you who this power was. When he wanted to know why the old man died, was the turning point. He saved a boys life every day, and finally a forgotten man who needed him. The fluff with the lady was only to show the final person he became.

This movie is great. I saw it when I was 13 I believe and loved it even then. I remember Harold Ramis, who did the screenplay and directed (also played this neurologist and collated with Bill Murray many times), originally said an estimated 10 years were spent in the time loop. And he later said it was more like 30 - 40 years probably after reevaluating with Danny Rubin who’s story is was based on. If you look online there are some estimated of about 12,000 give or takes. The film shows about 39 days and references 400 days in the film. Using the theory of 10000 hours to become a master of a skill. So about 33 - 34 years were spent in the time loop.
You mentioned what if he is creating different parallel universe outcomes, and never thought about that. It would be crazy. And on the of that what it all those different multiverse Phil’s were also doing the same?
    It’s kinda crazy. Great film.
