      Yes in 2023/2024 16GB should be the base RAM Starting Level for any Laptop $900+ and no Laptop regardless of cost should be less than 6GB these days RAM is cheap even if they have to go with a slower RAM or Older Gen RAM to reach cost, Then again any laptop over $500 should be 1TB Storage Apple still releases Macs/Macbooks with 256GB as a starting point on a $500+ Laptop or Mac Mini I mean WTD

      But if more ram doesn't affect real world application and game performance, it doesn't make sense to put more in there. Remember, the very fast SSD's are just as cache instead, and the ARM architecture is so much more efficient, in terms of performance per watt, compared to x86, that it makes up for the lower amounts of ram. So please look up specific benchmarks or tests for your specific workload/usecase, and see if more ram is a benefit, instead of just judging the 8gb as always being too low.

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde 6 місяців тому +1

      It's on the Tech Specs page for MBP14 M3.
      M3 = 100 GB/s (probably for the binned as well, not confirmed by Apple but I guess 100 GB/s)
      M3 Pro (both) = 150 GB/s (not 200!)
      M3 Max binned = 300 GB/s (not 400)
      M3 Max = 400 GB/s
      The retail MBP14 M3 Max is a binned M3 Max so less CPU cores and less GPU cores.
      So CPU cores
      M3 std 4 HP / 4 HE, 100 GB/s
      M3 Pro 5 / 6 (binned), 150 GB/s
      M3 Pro 6 / 6, 150 GB/s
      M3 Max 10 / 4 (binned), 300 GB/s
      M3 Max 12 / 4, 400 GB/s
      For those who are looking forward to Mac Studio M3, this machine's retail base model got binned Max chips both for M1 and M2. M3 Max will most likely be the binned version but you can get the real M3 Max for more money (on Apple Store). It's VERY likely. But let's wait for the launch and see which configurations we will get.

    Hi Dave,
    Thank you for this video, I love how you share your unbiased opinion to the rest of us.
    What do you think of the reduction in memory bandwidth in the M3 Pro (200 > 150 Gbps) and M3 Max (binned) (400 > 300 Gbps)?
    Chip upgrades are much more expensive than in the M2 generation. I was pointing to a binned M2 Max with 32gb of UM and 2TB of SSD and it was € 4500. Now, binned M3 Max with 36gb of UM and same SSD is € 4850 (consider that it has lower memory bandwidth). This is truly bad…
    Finally, why does the binned M3 Max supports either 36 or 96GB of UM while you need the top model to get 48, 64 or 128?
    I hope this will be explained.

    What do you think about this?
    The past few days before the Apple event last night, I've heard several people mention and point out that it looks like Apple is doing things the way they are to get back to delivering devices on a yearly basis. For one, Apple's stock holders got after them recently, and second, because Apple was forced to deliver products on approximately a 1 & 1/2 year cycle their competition had time to catch up to them. (Like Intel)
    Regardless, it does make more sense to be on a one year cycle since they've been able to do that for years prior to 2020. They have the M3, M3 pro and max chips out for the MBP's in the fall, then get the MBA's out in the spring so that new college students can buy a laptop before going to school after summer, and finally the devices on the Ultra chipset comes out in the summer before the cycle starts all over again. It's not a far fetched notion as again, this would allow for buyers to better know when and schedule upgrading when they needed a new device (whether to wait til the new model came out if it was coming up or if not then buy the current/"older" model).

    Thanks for your unbiased analysis as always. 1600$ for 8gb of RAM is even for apple standards a let down. And for them to compare M3 with M1 (and as you said even the intel macbooks) is a cheap and obvious marketing strategy that I think they should get called out for. Like that is a bad yet deceptive marketing strategy that doesn't deserve to be used.

    • @rileypeterson9090
      @rileypeterson9090 6 місяців тому

      I can't help but wonder if they used that strategy because they didn't get a lot of people to leave M1 for M2. Maybe they feel that M1 was so good, they are having a hard time converting people to take the leap towards the next generations?

    • @JasonTaylor-po5xc
      @JasonTaylor-po5xc 6 місяців тому

      @@rileypeterson9090 Very few upgrade from M1 to 2 or 2 to 3. Same on the Intel path - rarely would anyone go from 10th to 11th gen. The latest bump is even worse - from 13th to 14th is basically pointless. I think that's why most of their comparisons focused comparing against the last Intel based Mac instead of previous M-series. M1 to 3 might be worth it for some - but it really depends on the use case. Honestly, I'm more keen on the hardware supported AV1 codec than anything else about M3.

    Apple this time really stripped down too many things in M3 Pro:
    1) Memory bandwidth down from 200Gb/s to 150Gb/s
    2) less GPU cores compared to previous SoC
    3) Also transistors count from 40 Billion to 37 billion

    • @alpenjodel24
      @alpenjodel24 6 місяців тому +10

      The answer is probably chip binning. 3nm tech is quite hard to pull off, a lot of these chips basically come out partly defect and can't be used for higher end models. The raw compute power is still higher, because the functioning part of the chip is faster than before. That's why they can still use it as their mid-tier chip. But less bandwidth is always a sign for bad yields in the factories because they have to deactivate parts of the chip.

      Problems of TSMC’s low quality N3B yields. It will be improved in next year with N3E process. That’s why Snapdragon sticks with 4nm for their 8 Gen 3

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 6 місяців тому

      They had to make a lot of changes due to the low 3nm yield. This has meant the improvements expected from 5nm to 3nm had to be watered down. Apple decided they already delayed the M3 a year and they could not wait longer, so did the best they could. The same with the Snapdragon X Elite, it could not get the efficiency cores to work well so rather than another delay they released with just 12 performance cores. It is not easy as we get to 3nm and people tend to expect too much.

    Here's my theory... Apple only sells the higher ram configs themselves for the most part. There are some outliers like BH but anywhere else it's base model. The M1 and M2 base models had 16GB of ram, making them good to go for almost everyone. Now you're forced to go straight to Apple, cutting out Best Buy, Costco, etc from getting their margin from sales. Best buy won't sell you an M3 with 16GB of ram, only the next size up the M3 Pro because that base ram is 18GB.
