Yeah, it seems kind of like the worst of both worlds. It's not as bright and sharp as normal screens, and it isn't reflective like real e paper (in the sense that e paper doesn't give off light, you read it like normal paper with an outside light source). So you wouldn't really be able to ready anything outside, and it is still emitting light, so does cause more strain than a kindle. I think it's kind of gimmicky.
@@cheetoritosWell that the tablet wouldn't suffice for outdoor use is just speculation on your part. but yeah - at first glance it seems very niche. maybe if you have a kid or like to watch yt vids, but also want the E-ink experience of the paper-style. @@cheetoritos You'd have to crank the backlight up to 100% to be able to read outside, draining the battery. Meanwhile a Kindle probably lasts months since the screen only uses energy when it refreshes. It also doesn't use a backlight outside because it reflects sunlight and actually ends up being way brighter than normal screens, which have to compete with sunlight.
I had the chance to try this out for a month and do a video collab with TCL to talk more about the science behind eye strain and what they built with this screen. I personally did not struggle with the brightness on the screen at all, even when outside. Despite the lower NITS. But so happy to see your review of it! I think the tech is brilliant from an eyestrain perspective and I hope to see some of the tech brought forward into other screens. Did you see the Apple update for screen distance? Makes me happy to see tech companies being conscious of how tech can impact the eyes.
TCL reminds me of LG. They're doing something new, alot of smartphone manufacturers could learn from this. Yes, it may not be a priority, but it's still important what kind of screen your phone comes with. This TCL 40 is definitely a phone I'd consider getting as I do find myself reading for quite a long time on my phone.
honestly for $200 this phone is kind of tempting as a secondary option. I've been getting into downloading and having my own music collection and this phone has a headphone jack and expandable storage. I could see this making a great MP3 player.
why would you care about an e-ink like display on an mp3 player? And if you were buying it for reading, you know what else is 200 dollars? an actual e-ink device
@@Daniel-rw2gy That's exactly what I'm saying. It looks like a regular screen with a matte screen protector, but it's not. So I'd like to see a side by side if it actually looks and works very differently or if the "detailed tech" is just more or less some marketing propaganda and it just looks like a regular phone with a 5$ screen protector.
That's pretty sick. Would love to see a premium phone with this as an option. First thing I do with a phone is find a matte finish screen protector. Helps immensely with reflection when flying a drone.
I’ve always used matte screen protectors and one downside you forgot to mention is over time they do get considerably smoother. I know it takes a lot to get like that but the amount we touch our phones counts for a lot.
I think it's chiefly because most (if not all) anti-glare coatings reduce image sharpness and color accuracy, by design; they literally have to scatter light, and it's difficult if not impossible to scatter incoming light without also scattering some of the outgoing light from the screen. Since every phone screen has been getting better and brighter for years, it would seem like a regression to start putting anti-glare filters on them from the factory, rather than letting the user choose whether they want that.
Yeah Fr that’s the main problem, I have a matte display on my laptop but doesn’t look that sharp even though it’s qhd, and colors ain’t nothing to special.
I think you lowkey made the real value proposition of something like this and thats as a tablet! It makes a ton of sense! I'm not usually going to use it outside , the texture would be extremely helpful from a notetaking/writing perspective and for reading books/manga it would be the perfect marrying of the performance of a tablet with the display fidelity of an e-ink reader.
I use one of those paper-feel screen protectors on my iPad Pro and it’s lovely. Mostly use the device for reading books/manga. Annotating academic papers with an Apple Pencil knock-off feels amazing as well, although I’m sure my pencil tips are wearing out faster. Sure, videos don’t look nearly as good, but I rarely use it for that.
I'm wondering how well this would work as a drawing tablet? My daughter is getting quite in to that and would be nice to give her a bigger thing to use than her phone, but not crazy expensive like an iPad. The paper like display makes me think maybe this could be good for drawing on and also for kindle book reading as well. Does the screen affect color accuracy and such though?
@@RecBuddha it definitely would so you probably couldn’t do production art but as a learning sketch book this would actually work very well depending on stylus support. I kinda want an artist to review the larger device for this reason
I’m rocking a €10,- matte glass screen protector on my iPhone for over a year now and it’s amazing. Like this TCL it has major benefits such as anti glare, truly fingerprint resistant and the smoothest feel when swiping. I was afraid this matte finish would cause a loss of display clarity but luckily that is not an issue. I’m not a fan of TCL in particular but I do love these matte finished displays.
@@stevevlahos1 I think you can find them just about anywhere. I'm in India using a $200 3 year old Redmi and I can just find the matte screen guards for it in local shops here. It has all the benefits that this comment listed, and the only downside for me is that it sacrifices a little bit of brightness, but it's not anything significant and I never feel the need for that extra brightness anyways, not to mention that I'm using an LCD display too. Overall, I'd say it is very much worth it. The no-fingerprints and smooth touch/swipe feel is really satisfying
Using 'em for 8 years now after a dear friend of mine suggested me those for good gaming. god I thank him to this day as rarely you'll find someone talking about matte protective glasses here in my city.
Any particular ones you recommend? I’ve got a lot of concussion patients with extended symptoms who struggle with eye strain but need screens to work/live; I’m curious if any of these could help that during recovery
Matte screen protectors are where it's at! I use my gadgets in outdoor and well-lit environments somewhat often, and it's nice not to get suddenly blinded because some random light source reflected perfectly into my face. And yeah there's something satisfying about sliding my fingers across that micro-pebbled texture, as opposed to the sometimes jerky feel of smooth glass. I wish they were more prevalent beyond Apple devices though.
I think TCL's main problem was that many people don't know about this type of phone & tablet, but now after your vid I'm sure they'll sell a bit more. I'm guessing they'd considered most of the downsides you mentioned that's why it's priced relatively low at $200 and has a large battery as it would work great as a secondary device esp. for long reading, actually planning to get one or the tablet sometime. What TCL can do is adapt the next versions to the LTPO screens that have higher nits for outdoor reading and variable refresh rate for battery savings. The selfie camera upgrade won't really matter as I don't think people are buying these for social media creation.
This would be a dream to me, I've used matte screen protectors for years now because of my light sensitivity. Wish more manufacturers made this an option
This reminds me of the matte protection glass back in the iPhone 4 days. It was pretty much the same as you described this screen but it was a bit pixel-ish.
I agree I doubt I'd want something like that on my phone. BUT, I will say, I am absolutely in love with my paper-feel screen protector on my iPad. I use it mainly for digitally handwritten notes with the Apple pencil, looking at music charts on stage, etc, and that texture is a total game-changer.
The tablet version they have with this would probably be more popular, as you said, very close to an e-ink display but with other benefits from a tradicional tablet. As long as the hardware isn't too low spec.
The first thing I noticed was the lack of glare. Would love to have more phones with an anti-glare coating or whatever (more laptops too; my desktop monitors are the only displays I have that don't have any glare).
Coatings and textured glass wear down and much faster than you'd think. It is just a better idea to get a matte screen protector because when it wears down you can just replace it.
Reminds me of the matt screen protectors i used to put on my phones about 8 years ago. Although perhapps not exactly the same, the results were very simmilar to whats being described here.
I actually use a matte screen protector. That thing feels just like the back of any textured Samsung or IPhone glass. I does have a small impact on the sharpness but all in one it feels so much better imo
hi, why other companies don't use these displays is also that this mat will wear out easily after a year of use, for example in games or using touch in one place, and the effect will be visible. imagine on a display that is all matte a few shiny peeled off spots...this is something that won't happen on a glossy display (plus you can use glass or film for protection as you also mentioned)
That also happens on shinny screens, I used to play games on my old phone and there's spots where the game keys were, I tried cleanings but they won't come off
I have one of those "paper like" screen protectors on my iPad. I love it. It cuts some of the reflection/glare, and feels more like writing on paper (which is why I used it). Interesting idea on a phone.
You can get screenprotectors for any kind of phone that does the same thing... that gives an anti-reflective matte look on your display that also protects the glass from scratches. I have this on my s22u and it works perfectly fine.
I think we can put a matte screen protector to have that same experience on our current devices. I have seen that in person on my friends device but that has a downside as well.
@@Kivencito From what I have seen on the first look was the display quality gets a bit low with that protector on because of that non sticky pixelated texture. While using Instagram and UA-cam is definitely not a good experience. I would prefer a clear screen protector so that We can experience good quality amoled display these days
@@MagnusMarcellus For gaming it's good for sure no doubt. I have also used to have a matte protector many years back before 2012 on Sony Xperia sp. It has one advantage of added security only while viewing directly the display is visible, side angles almost not visible.
I've been using 3mk matt protectors since I remember and don't see any display downgrade at all. The rainbow effect might come from applying it in a humid environment.
The tiny little tidbit about the pain of producing videos of objects with reflective surfaces being mitigated by this tech was cool! So glad you included that.
I am actually very interested in this type of screen! I have matt displays everywhere I can. Are there maybe screenprotectors that have this look and feel? Then I could just add it to a regular smartphone
Well I've been using matte screen protectors, not a good experience tho, especially sometimes the texture can ruin how sharp media content appears on the screen
i have a matt screen protector on my phone, it came with it from back market. insane improvement compared to regular screens, everytime i hold a friends phone i have to realize again that reflections even exist lol
@leonorou7020 FLOLAB makes the best matte screen protectors that give this paper-like effect to regular smartphones, I’ve only ever tried it on iPhone but I believe they also offer it for android phones as well
Agreed with most of what you said. Two things I would like to mention: it is a bit more than niche, especially for people who do not do a lot of social media or text while walking and second and most importantly for me: matte display = no fingerprints!! Something I have the feeling you also like in a product
@@KrissFliss Its the other way around actually. When you put a matte finish on any display you slightly decrease the percieved brightness thus you need to increase your brightness to have the same level as a glossy one.
The Steam Deck OLED has an option for a similar display and it looks gorgeous still. Black levels aren’t as deep due to having to scatter the light, but I’d rather see what I’m playing then readjust because I can’t see because of the glare. You mentioned that having a more premium display may help, and it does for sure. The OLED on the SD solved a lot of the issues that you have with this phone. Honestly any high end phone should have an etched screen option, it’s so clutch when there’s a lot of light near you.
I wonder how much more expensive (for independent repair shops, especially those that are in areas with other forms of the Dollar [CAD/AUD/NZD/etc]) those OLED displays would be to replace if or when a user breaks the screen, if other manufacturers started using it. "Glass is glass, and glass breaks" - JerryRigEverything (regardless of the display tech) Since a replacement for a Samsung phone display is $400(CAD)+. I feel like at the first repair most will go back to a standard glary display (because of price), I think it's just cheaper to have devices (especially phones and tablets) like this as backup devices rather than a daily driver, since it (the faux e-ink paper display [normal SuperAMOLED/OLED/LCD display, but frosted and including a hardware based blue light filter]) at this point is somewhat new.
Hmmm interesting, you think the anti-glare coating on the premium steam deck is worth it? IIRC Dave2D said it hurt image quality too much in his opinion. I wish I could see it in person to decide
@@ericwright8592 Dave 2D I feel like is heavily exaggerating imo. It looks fine especially in a dark room at night. At night both versions are basically identical. In the light there is a difference in the black levels, but the benefit is you can see your screen a lot more then before. More than worth it.
An excellent compromise would be the etched glass on the laminated screens of tablet monitors, such as those made by Huion. It's less effective than tradtional anti-glare coatings on monitors, but feels great without nearly as much visual compromises seen here.
Last year, I got a matte screen protector installed which pretty much does the same. But all those cons you mentioned are so evident that within a few days, I went to the shop, had it removed and installed a normal screen protector.
I am still using one for more than a year and it's perfect for me. In fact now the matte finish has almost degraded to become smooth and I might get a fresh one.
They don't need more layers... And it doesn't have to be blurry. Etch the layer of glass already there down to 1/10th of a pixel "resolution." This is just a low end phone. All screens should be either this or transflective LCDs on pro phones. Or a screen on the front and back.
Or just slap on a matte screen protector on your phone, it behaves exactly the same as the tcl described in this video - i bet thats pretty much what tcl did too. Personally i hate it
So Marques could you do a comparison to this phone and a modern flagship with a matte screen protector applied? I understand the goal for TCL is to make a screen that's less intense, but could the same be achieved with a screen protector while retaining the benefits of a mid-tier or flagship phone?
I wonder how this screen will hold up. My car had a matte screen, and from touching and swiping the same areas over and over again, it actually polished these areas and they became shiny. I'm sure this phone will have the same issue after a year of use.
I used to put matte screen protectors on my phones. but i hate it cuz it decreases image sharpness dramatically. even if your screen resolution is at its highest, images would still look soft and some details are missing
I always get matte finished screen protectors, but somehow again gets finger prints. Hopefully this type of display is better than the screen protectors
This reminds of a time when I used to buy matte screen protectors to cut reflections and for the soft touch feel. Definitely would like to see this get adopted on mainstream flagships
I would absolutely checkout a 9h glass screen protector with this finish though. Have an option to apply it to your device for like $15 or so, and I think it would find a big enough following.
I thought it's already been a thing since a few years ago. Some of my friends still use matt screen protectors today.

I would really love to see this tech on a flagship. Actually I was looking for this here in PT for the last few days in worten or fnac stores, but they don't have it available. I would buy this, but buy9ing an entry phone with bad photography hardware kills it for me. Even so, this looks like a first effort... and a very good one at it. I loved that transition effect to papper mode... really cool one!
They are available right now. I have been looking (from time to time) for it to show up in stores to check it live and take my S-Pen to test and see if it is compatible. Their T-Pen seems to require charging. I am a little concerned about the CPU (which is from 2017) and updates past their announced support of 2025.
I wonder how well the tablet version of that TCL screen would work for (the super small niche market of) digital sheet music for choruses and other ensemble performers.
Hey marques, if you suffer from eye strain, like i did. What causes brutal eye strain is using your phone or monitor in darkness. Always use a bedside lamp at night. Also need ambient lighting behind your monitor or tv. Watching in total darkness gives painful eye strain. Hopefully this helps a somone.
I can actually see a great market for this (especially the tablet version) as people would certainly love an e-ink display that has the ability to just turn into a normal Android Tablet whenever they want to. It doesn't have the best specs because it doesn't need the best specs and that's honestly kinda smart. Cuz people who will buy this are basically just expecting a screen that they can read books off of and for that it has more than enough power inside. And lower specs = Lower price obv :) Imo I would probably love to try a product like this in the future myself (when I actually get the opportunity to do so ofc)
you can use a matte screen protector and get the same effect and have the option to go back to the glossy display by removing the screen protector because the matte finish diminishes brightness and it also change the color
This seems extremely similar to what would happen if you put on a "matte screen protector" they cost like 2 pounds. All visual changes he described is exactly what i had when i used one, eventually went to a regular one due to the reduced sharpness Maybe give a quick compare of the 2 ?
First thing I thought of after seeing that screen was the old Zagg plastic film screen protectors. Ones you had ro use a bit of water to apply. They always had that look after applying them. Always used them back then. I definitely would like to see these kinds of screens on more phones, as you said with OLED displays.
I have had my POCO X3 for 3 years now, and since the day I got it, I've been using Matte Screen Protectors on it, and boy oh boy is it a beautiful experience. My brother has the same phone and uses a normal Tempered Glass Protector, but if I compare our phones, mine always looks better. It's actually significantly cheaper too, than a tempered glass. it does offer almost the same protection, if not better. I have dropped my phone face-first on the ground from my hands, on my own height, A LOT of times. And it has never cracked. All in all, it's a beautiful experience. At least for me.
I've been looking at this one for a while. I'm tempted by the e-reader / Tablet version. There's also the Onyx Boox Palma which takes this idea and puts a real e-ink display with higher refresh rate...
Those are plastic, will wear down after some time. And since it's an additional layer on top of the display it looks much worse. Really affects the sharpness.
You mean, when it already has this finish? Maybe some intervening liquid screen protector or for a hydrogel based one (wouldn't that go hazy from the oily liquid?) DI water.
So I am probably in the minority here, as I am actually very pleased with the Nxtpaper 40 smartphone. I purchased it a few weeks ago, after having a very positive experience with my Nxtpaper 11 tablet. The screens on both devices are very comfortable and easy on the eye. I didn't get that experience with other phones/tablets with a matte screen protector. My phone came with a stylus (capacitve) and a case, which I like. I also replaced my old ipad with TCL Nxtpaper 11 tablet and purchased the official case and active stylus (4096 pressure levels) which I use for digital artwork on the go. I mainly read artbooks, watch videos and browse the internet on my tablet. I used to suffer from eyestrain (yes i tried numerous devices and matte screen protectors) and since I switched to these Nxtpaper devices, I have been a lot happier.
What do you think about wear on the matte surface? I use a matte screen protector on my tablet for note-taking, and I've noticed it feels noticeably smoother around the center than by the edge (I'm not sure how much of that is my pen or my hand though). Reflectance seems unaffected by the wear though. I've also seen a good amount of people with matte screen protectors on their iPhone.
I've used matte screen protectors for so long, because they don't hold fingerprint. You get used to it after time, but sadly it looks bad. It's not like a matte monitor, it looks worse :(
I used a screen protector for an iPad Air 3 that had many of these features, it was awesome to use with the Apple Pencil when drawing. There probably is a phone version of that type of screen protector.
I've been using matte screen protectors on my phone for years. People always comment how cool it is when they use my phone. Blows my mind that it took this long for someone to put it in a phone standard
If some company took this and gave it a 1440p, brighter screen I'd fully consider it. For normal everyday use I think this could be really good. The few times I watch video on my phone, it really doesn't have to look perfect or anything otherwise I'd be watching it on a tv or monitor. Maybe it could be annoying as a viewfinder for taking photos and video but tbh as long as it looks decent I'm really not that bothered.
@@mowglimermaid is that a recommendation? Not spending that much for features I don't need and a phone way bigger than I'd like. I'd likely get the s24 or get the FE when that comes out this summer though
I used to use matte screen protector on my previous galaxy s23 plus. It was amazing not to see myself on the screen like a dark mirror under the sun, it rejects fingerprints and the soft touch when scrolling was just great but yeah that layer does something to the resolution and it's noticeable how less sharp details look like. Now I'm using a galaxy s23 ultra and I didn't put a matte screen protector. I miss the anti reflection effect and the soft touch but this screen in full resolution looks so gorgeous that I feel I'd be ki11ing its quality.
Is it comparable to a 1080p screen if you're using it in 1440p mode? I remember the time I used one and it even distorted the color when you look closely so I'm wondering if it's any better now
@@sandysan4191 I think a 1080p screen without a matte protector still looks sharper than a 2k screen with matte protector. The matte protector makes light diffuse that's great for sun light but it also applies for its light that comes from its oled panel.
5:57 'the lack of contrast becomes really onvious. This one's rated at only 1500:1 which even compared to other budget phones isnt that great.' Proceeds to compare it to an iphone XR with even worse contrast of 1400:1 ☠️
I bought it and I am sure I don't use any other type of display any more ! Because it is so much more satisfying to glide on this display like paper. I am honest with you and only downsides are the same the guy told us! But I'm happy.
I would buy one (if I wasnt on Verizon) I read a lot off of my phone and so losing that contrast/sharpness for less eye strain wouldn't bother me one bit. I do love that paper feel screen too! I have a paper feel screen protector on my old Z Flip 3.
All I could think about was SCRATCHES SCRATCHES SCRATCHES! Just hearing your fingernails against that screen told me everything I needed to know about how it would hold up in my pocket or face down on a random surface. Plus no screen protectors as you said. Complete dealbreaker tho the tech seems perfect for high framerate e-readers/tablets!
But it's still glass. It's a textured service, of course it will make a noise 😑. I have a Pixel 7 Pro which has GG Victus and it's probably one of the most scratched up screens I've had on a phone (baring my old Apple watch).

There is actually a lot of Screen Proctectors that mimic this effect, they are called something like "Mate Screen Protector" in a free-translation from Brazilian PT. Its is pretty awesome and fits most phones, but with the downside of making the screen a bit less colorfull.
I think I'd like a matte screen, but I'd need to get my hands on it to be sure... I keep trying to get a matte screen protector but they seem to be rare
0:05 imagine you told someone in 2016 that this was a budget phone. I remember when android FLAGSHIPS just started getting 8GB ram and people were fiercely debating whether or not it was pointless overkill waste of money 😂
I use a matte screen protector on my iPad Air as a student because it makes it a lot easier to write on with the Apple Pencil. The display quality does suffer like you said because the light is getting diffused through the protector, but I enjoy writing on it much more, so it’s worth it.
This is super cool! My instant thought is, couldn't we just get a special type of tempered or textured glass screen protector that mimics this tech but can be installed on any phone? I'd buy that! :D
Search for matte screen protectors, and you'll at least get the glare reduction. Unfortunately they're a bit hard to find especially outside of Apple and flagship models.
As a person with a Matte screen protector, YOU WILL LOSE SCREEN QUALITY, if you love how clear and crisp your phone's nice screen is than be prepared to sacrifice picture quality. Another thing is that matte screen protectors loose their smooth texture quickly from daily usage over time, the slick feeling of swiping left and right would last only a few months before I noticed wear and tear.
After reading the video title, I thought it would be about all the good things that we miss about older smartphones. And the first thing I was expecting from that was the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone.
@@alattice You should. I moved on from a similar phone to one which has an onscreen fingerprint sensor and now I miss my old phone every time I touch my phone.
I immediately thought of a matte screen protector I had on my phone once. It felt *awesome*! The texture felt really nice and it made the phone much more pleasant to use. But as a photographer I want to see the full sharpness of my shots... Which is why I run my S22 Ultra at 1440p for example. Yes, there IS a VERY noticable difference in sharpness. Linus is wrong about this. And with the screen protector the sharpness just wasn't there anymore. So I removed it. This screen seems to be exactly the same.
@@theramennoodler7950 Preach! Matte absolutely sucks. It's a shame consumers are stuck with having to use matte desktop monitors. You can go from glossy to matte with a screen protector, but you can't really go from matte to glossy.
Well I do tend to love this Zagg anti-glare screen protector from them 👍🏼 how about they come up with a paper like feeling sort of screen protector? Maybe 🤔 or not ?, that once you put this on any smartphone it’ll make you feel like you’re seeing/watching everything in like paper 📄 mode 👍🏼
its already there, check out paper-like screen protector for iPads (tons of videos on UA-cam). People use it with the Apple Pencil to have a feel like they are writing on paper. It's really good but has the similar downside as the decreased sharpness, brightness and overall picture quality.
i use matte screen protector all the time. the softness kinda looks like "natural" anti aliasing to me. the downside is obvious, image looks less crisp. but this actually helps a lot when you have low res display like on steam deck, or some cheap 720p smartphone
Matte isn't anti glare. It simply scatters light and washes out a larger area. I've never had issues with reflections or clarity with a smartphone display in broad daylight. Contrarily, matte always has issues with clarity because the light emitted from the screen itself is scattered. In your case, it's easy to just pick up some matte screen protectors if that's what you prefer. Going from matte to glossy on the other hand just doesn't work. Hopefully matte displays on smartphones doesn't become a trend.
I actually put a cheap anti-glare tempered glass screen protector on my 15PM about two weeks after I bought it. I was really looking for the buttery smooth scrolling feel, especially paired with ProMotion (which was new to me), and it absolutely delivered on that. After a month I was so fed up with the fuzziness I had to take it off. And boy was I missing out on the sharpness of that display. Even with the XDR OLED behind it, brightness also suffered a bit as well. Really wish there was some way to preserve the soft-touch smooth-scroll without sacrificing clarity. Great timing on this video.
Exactly the same experience I had. Got one of those screen protectors and at first it was great but when I took it off a few months later it was just insane how much better the display looked without it
I've used antiglare screen protectors on my old iPhone before and I remember how everything looked fuzzy and less sharp. It's a cool thing to use for a while but the effect of it will get tiring because you'd be missing out a lot on image quality.
I just discovered that they sell matte screen protectors a few months ago and they are actually really nice. I’d love to see how it would look if it was executed properly.
Paperlike screen protectors and blue light reducing software is possible on higher end phones, theoretically... But this is really cool, especially with the software tricks.
I'm a beta tester of a TCL tablet that has this display, it's friggin awesome! Best thing so far: fingerprints are virtually invisible. Don't have to constantly clean the screen. And YES the screen just feels amazing. Haven't used the stylus yet.

On Kindle you can read it under the summer sunlight, that's the reason people buy shitty Kindle and not other tablets who read on it.
Onyx Boox makes e-ink android tablets and e-readers. They're in every way better than Kindles thanks to the Google Playstore.

I think it's chiefly because most (if not all) anti-glare coatings reduce image sharpness and color accuracy, by design; they literally have to scatter light, and it's difficult if not impossible to scatter incoming light without also scattering some of the outgoing light from the screen.
Since every phone screen has been getting better and brighter for years, it would seem like a regression to start putting anti-glare filters on them from the factory, rather than letting the user choose whether they want that.
I think the best way to reduce their main problem is having the anti glare coating as close to the screen as possible

Yes their tablet actually costs the same as the phone, which is kinda nuts.

Sure, videos don’t look nearly as good, but I rarely use it for that.
I'm wondering how well this would work as a drawing tablet? My daughter is getting quite in to that and would be nice to give her a bigger thing to use than her phone, but not crazy expensive like an iPad.

What TCL can do is adapt the next versions to the LTPO screens that have higher nits for outdoor reading and variable refresh rate for battery savings.

hi, why other companies don't use these displays is also that this mat will wear out easily after a year of use, for example in games or using touch in one place, and the effect will be visible. imagine on a display that is all matte a few shiny peeled off spots...this is something that won't happen on a glossy display (plus you can use glass or film for protection as you also mentioned)
Matte finish glass will stand up to wear and tear a lot better than matte finish plastic screen protectors though

Our Pakistani phone “Benjort 13 Turbo Max’’ has it as well
I wonder how much more expensive (for independent repair shops, especially those that are in areas with other forms of the Dollar [CAD/AUD/NZD/etc]) those OLED displays would be to replace if or when a user breaks the screen, if other manufacturers started using it. "Glass is glass, and glass breaks" - JerryRigEverything (regardless of the display tech)
Since a replacement for a Samsung phone display is $400(CAD)+.

Just a question: how about applying paperlike screen protection?
People do that here all the time
Aren’t those worse?
If yours is a plastic screen protector, then yes, it’ll wear unevenly. The TCL texture is the actual glass, so most likely more wear resistant.

Just a different perspective from this video, great job and thank you on the quality of the caption writing used in this video. Something new I can see as compared to your previous videos :)
There is actually a lot of Screen Proctectors that mimic this effect, they are called something like "Mate Screen Protector" in a free-translation from Brazilian PT. Its is pretty awesome and fits most phones, but with the downside of making the screen a bit less colorfull.
And I have read they can affect the fingerprint reader.
Fingerprint readers are affected by this
@Azu10157 The point is that phones have under display fingerprint sensors. Hating on it wan't simply remove them.
@@DrewHerrema I didn't know that, I have an iPhone, but it makes sense. Thanks for letting us know.
I think I'd like a matte screen, but I'd need to get my hands on it to be sure... I keep trying to get a matte screen protector but they seem to be rare
not really rare maybe where you are but they are pretty cheap where i am
0:05 imagine you told someone in 2016 that this was a budget phone. I remember when android FLAGSHIPS just started getting 8GB ram and people were fiercely debating whether or not it was pointless overkill waste of money 😂
@shock789 I definitely agree with that. It's somewhat expected, but still mindblowing when you stop and take a step back
For those who were interested in this the TCL 50 Nxtpaper is getting a US releasel. It was just announced.
Screen Protector: I'm about to end this phone's whole career
There is screen protectors for this screen.
Wonder how durability is affected because of this. Does it scratch easily?
We'll only find out if JerryRigEverything gets his hands on this phone
@@kenway103precisely😊
The phone matching the jeans at 0:28 has to be one of Marques' usual easter eggs🤣🤣
I use a matte screen protector on my iPad Air as a student because it makes it a lot easier to write on with the Apple Pencil. The display quality does suffer like you said because the light is getting diffused through the protector, but I enjoy writing on it much more, so it’s worth it.
using matte display covers for years. Glad to see this happen, hope the big players pick that up as well.
Always liked satin finish, easy on eyes, easy on touch, easy on greasy hands.
After reading the video title, I thought it would be about all the good things that we miss about older smartphones. And the first thing I was expecting from that was the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone.
Holding on to my note 9 as long as it's sw life allows because the fingerprint reader is on the back 👌
@@alattice You should.
This seems like an absolute game changer in the smartphone industry
How about you watch the damn video before commenting
Gotchya lol
I bought the "paper" tablet they make thanks to this review and I friggin love it. Thanks for the review.
You can put a matte screen protector that does the same thing.
100% the same thing?
@@PatrikRasch Yup along with 100% off all the problems of having a matte display.
@@theramennoodler7950 Preach! Matte absolutely sucks. It's a shame consumers are stuck with having to use matte desktop monitors. You can go from glossy to matte with a screen protector, but you can't really go from matte to glossy.
@@bren.r i actively avoid glossy desktop monitors 💀
Matte screens sucks in display quality honestly speaking
It’s pretty good for the price
i use matte screen protector all the time. the softness kinda looks like "natural" anti aliasing to me. the downside is obvious, image looks less crisp. but this actually helps a lot when you have low res display like on steam deck, or some cheap 720p smartphone
For the same effect. On my s22 ultra I use a matte anti glare screen protector and it is great. So great I bought 5 extra screen protectors love it
Matte isn't anti glare.
Same, I like the matte
Nice vid 👍🏽
I love this
Paperlike screen protectors and blue light reducing software is possible on higher end phones, theoretically...
